Huge queues, very noisy, drier than sticks scones, confusing service. Server shouted at us but I couldnt understand what she was saying. My friend, who had been there previously, said this was common. Just consumed some of the dry scones as quickly as possible and was glad to get out.

OMG - what has happened to Dobbies . went in today for the first time in a while , the outside eating area had rubbish , dead plants and trays just lying on the ground and this is at 9 am . The plants are dire with a lot dying or dead , obviously due to lack of watering -this is mean't to be a GARDEN centre. It had the look of a business about to close down !! The only bright thing were the lovely staff in the cafe . I think a review of the manager is most definately needed.

Decided to go to the cafe with a friend for coffee and a cheese scone. Coffee was served in a paper cup and I was told to warm the scone myself in the microwave behind me. The cutlery was coloured plastic. Coffee and Scone £6.15 ! Extortionate ! Won’t be going again. Such a shame as it used to be a popular place for ladies who lunch. Garden Centre in general is overpriced.

Visited this place for a quick scone and hot drink. The coffee was mostly warm milk with a nasty tasting coffee flavour. The hot chocolate was virtually undrinkable - gritty with a strange taste. The scones were tasteless and stodgy. We couldn't even finish our food/drinks. Over £12 as well. Go somewhere else.

Visited this week for "Breakfast with Santa". If first impressions were anything to go by the score would have been a 1. The event took place in the Conservatory which was very cold. The tables were awkward to sit at. Our breakfast came and was barely warm. I would have expected more on the plate too. The kids were still hungry when finished. However, the service was attentive. After we had eaten Santa arrived. He was brilliant, looked the part and was very patient with the kids and excited parents. The lady who was hosting was great, very friendly, and efficient along with her Elf helper. Organising the kids into the right place for games of pass the parcel and throw bean bags into the hoops, that sort of thing. The kids then received a gift from Santa which was actually very good value/quality. So as the kids had a great time, I`ve reviewed it as a 4 but if it was based on the food and surroundings it would barely scrape a 2.

The garden centre is the same as it always been nothing to bad to say but the cafe is another story. The women serving us were so lovely but the cafe definitely needs a different structure and definitely at least one worker dedicated to cleaning as they were all rushing serving food/ drink and nothing was being done about the actual restaurant floor. To sit you had to move other people’s trays full of dirty dishes onto other dirty tables, not to mention the stains and crumbs on the tables left behind. The actual floor had crumbs and food bits everywhere it was vile and there were no clean forks. The prices are obscene. Almost £4 for a single empire biscuit, £8 for a toastie and £3 for a 500ml of pop. Was a good trip until the cafe, most of the issues would be solved with 1-2 more members of staff. I hope it’s resolved in the future as it was a lovely place to go but based on previous review I don’t think it will change in the near future.

Strangely, I went to buy a plant - not an option listed above). This is probably significant as the plant sale side of this business seems to have been sidelined. My daughter-in-law wanted an Hydrangea Strong Annabelle (Incrediball) for her birthday, so I checked online and was assured that it was in stock in Birtley. Various hydrangeas were scattered throughout the plant sale section (why they can't all be together defeats me) and although I hunted for over half an hour, not one member of staff was available to ask. I did find a member of staff inside who was able to disappear and return to tell me that 'they were out of season'. Whilst there, I decided to make a few purchases. I paid for these at the till and, on returning to the car, realised I had been over-charged. The attitude of the staff left much to be desired. I did remark that 'I was not trying to pull a fast one', to be told 'no-one said you were'. The mistake was rectified, not a word of apology, and when I left saying 'thank you', I was ignored. I had been planning a cup of tea and cake in the restaurant, but couldn't wait to get out of there.

If medals were awarded for visitor-experience, I'd be recommending Dobbies for a silver gilt. Once you've found the place - we missed the entrance even with SatNav and the roadside sign because of the neighbouring garage - Dobbies has just about everything to commend it - lots of decent parking, a great stock of shrubs and plants as well as gardening equipment, attractive home and giftware, and very helpful staff. The restaurant is a delight. If the wife had not objected, I would have asked whoever made those wonderful white chocolate and raspberry scones to marry me. But . . .the gents' urinal proved to be a completely different kettle of fish. It's in desperate need of a major makeover. On our visit, the place was smelly and the floor awash with a liquid I dare not investigate too closely. The notice on the wall said that the place was checked regularly (hourly?) which was rather strange because it was signed as having been checked at mid-day although it was then only just after 11am! A great shame!

I booked 'Tea with Santa' after going last year. What an utter disappointment! After informing staff on booking that my children both have autism and sensory issues, the staff seated us underneath an archaic air conditioning unit which was so load we couldn't hear each other speaking. The food was OK. There was no entertainment save for some poor harassed lady trying hard to entertain them with little party games. 'Santa' came in and sat down. He didn't interact with my children at all. My kids were absolutely devastated. As always, the loud obnoxious children or the tiny cute ones won everything. We weren't offered refils of tea, coffee or soft drinks so had to buy extra. Never again! In 2018, the event was absolutely brilliant. Their 'Santa' was absolutely fantastic and was dancing with the kids as well as taking time to visit each table to talk to each child. His assistant, 'Miriam Elf' was also fantastic. They really brought some magic to it and my kids were over the moon. There was then a disco with silly games and again, this was fantastic. It was a real 5* event. The place is just going really downhill and it's sad.

Whilst making the coffees, the lady started talking to someone else who worked there about the garden centre opening times in a sign which said 5pm. We really felt unwelcome. A man queued behind us with cake and wanted to order drinks. The lady said ‘we close at 4.30pm’. The man said ‘are you going to take our cups off us at 4.30pm?’. It was absolutely ridiculous. I take my M-in-L out for lunch occasionally and she suggested Dobbies. Last time I listen to her.Got there and sat her in the conservatory and went looking for a menu.. none to be found and the lady said " Food details are on the wall behind the counter" plus what's on display. What was on display was unattractive and lloked like it had been sat there for HOURS!Ordered coffee, tea and 2 sandwiches, one toasted. That was a feat in itself since the 2 ladies were too busy chatting and ignoring me to bother serving me until I asked if they were serving or on a break? The toastie landed on my plate and was literally toasted one side and not the other ! " Toaster playing up " was the reason, pathetic. The sandwiches were cheap, cheap white bread, cut across the middle like 2 doorsteps. As unappealing as you could imagine.Coffee and tea were okay...it's hard to mess up filter coffee and a teabag in boiling water which was just as well.A more unhelpful set of staff would be hard to imagine. No interest in customers or preparing food correctly while managing to be VERY expensive compared to similar cafe/garden centres. We both left half our food but since no staff turned up to remove our plates ( obviously pre -occupued with their chatting ) by the time we'd finished our drinks we just upped and left.If you want to be ( eventually ) served by disinterested staff, pay for expensive low quality food and observe a general lack of interest in how it's served, this is the perfect place to go. Otherwise, AVOID!

They didn't have the plant in stock and while looking for it my partner stood in some dogs dirt in the garden centre. While he was trying to clean it off I went in to buy a birthday card, when I paid the inflated price for the card I asked for a paper bag I was told there was a 5p charge for paper bags.

Visited the café with friends. The soup was very tasty but quite expensive for what it is. The girls are friendly and helpful but no-one asks to carry tray to table which when you use a walking stick can be awkward.

Pre paid for Christmas lunch at Dobbies website. Absolutely disgusting, cold, no taste to any part of the meal. If I didn’t know I would say this whole meal was delivered in a plastic container possibly frozen and heated in a microwave. Not one member of staff asked if we enjoyed it, I think they were frightened to ask.

Scones look and taste delicious but i think they are quite expensive £3.00 for a scone and jam which is less than half that at Sainsburys cafe and just as nice

Previously have had breakfast here and really good so we thought we would try lunch but choice of food not very good. It was very mundane and quite expensive for what you got. May be on another day the choice might be better, not sure

We had a fabulous traditional afternoon tea here with a delicious selection of larger than usual finger sandwiches; mini cakes - fudge brownie, Victoria sponge and lime cheesecake plus scrumptious homemade scones with jam and clotted cream. Chocolate covered strawberries were an added delight. We also treated ourselves to wine before the choice of a pot of tea or filter coffee. It was the best pot of tea I've had for a while, keeping hot and serving three whole cups!

Then i was told that i would have egg and chips to be told they dont have a button on the till for egg and chips... Subsequently i was told i could have the ham eggs and chips without the ham for the same price £7.50 not impressed and the assistant also asked her supervisor.i spend a lot of money at dobbies but never again...

I like it here. Love a good calm trip to Dobbies, awkward entrance when entering the car park, but that aside, the plants and decor are always a pleasure to walk around

A great, cheap and cheerful, good value breakfast, as a great break from some shopping in the Metro Centre. It is a big pub, so plenty of tables, including lots of booths which give a nice touch. Between us we had different breakfast muffins, including the bacon and egg, and the veggie sausage - both were great. The veggie sausages were really tasty and good quality - as good as the real thing! Using the app makes ordering really easy, and tea and coffee refills are free. So all in all, a great breakfast at a great price, in a nice setting.

Ate here for 4 days whilst on a coach trip. The establishment was clean and the staff were pleasant, but there were a few things that let it down. My main concern was that there were no sneeze guards over any of the food, particularly where the desserts were laid out and everybody had to pass/wait in order to get their main meal. Likewise, in the hot plate area there was no food protection whatsoever, and while this may not be a mandatory requirement, this is the only hotel in years that I haven't seen this in place to protect customers and staff alike, even before covid times. The breakfast is very good although we missed some mushrooms with our full English, and ironically the fresh bread is covered with a tea towel. The dinner portion sizes were a bit hit and miss, as one evening my partner got 1 small fishcake, 3 new potatoes and a bit of veg, not very substantial for an adult, yet my stuffed peppers and vegetables was a good size. We also thought that £37 for a bottle of Errazuriz Chardonnay was very extreme, and while we understand there has to be a mark up, we didn't pay this much in London!
