Dipton Mill Inn is a lovely, idiosyncratic little pub. Approaching it from Hexham it felt almost "Hobbiton" down in the valley and with the beautiful autumn climbing foliage all over the front. Inside it is a small, cosy space, you can feel that it has been a pub for a long time - it has a steady and welcoming atmosphere. No TVs, no music and no slot machines (which we very much appreciated)! Though maybe a little quiet music would lighten the atmosphere a bit (and mean we weren't overhearing other people's conversations quite so much)? The home cooked food looked and smelled amazing and we will definitely return to try it sometime. We couldn't stay long but felt like somewhere you could get comfortable and while away and afternoon perhaps after a walk or day in Hexham? The staff were lovely and made us feel at home. J said the beers were all excellent. There was a good selection of wines and some quality cider available, too.

After viewing menus in Hexham and being unsuccessful in finding my idea of traditional food that is home cooked I stumbled upon this gorgeous country pub! The garden was a sun trap as it’s at the bottom of a valley - wish I had taken pics of place and food! Anyway if you’re nearby give it a visit - definitely a drive to and not open all day everyday like many but very much worth a visit. Beautiful home-cooked food for sure 👍🏼

Lovely wee pub to visit! A bit gutted we only turned up an hour before closing on Sunday. Really short window to enjoy it as it's only open for 3 hours. We had some really nice home cooked food (Sicilian Lamb and Ratatouille & Cous Cous) and a couple of locally brewed pints. Totally could have stayed in there all day with that cozy fire!

Absolutely superb. Lovely beer with fantastic prices and very nice food. Under £50 for 4 beers, two mains and dessert. Worth getting here early unless you've reserved. Only one beer on cask but more than made up by the excellent bottle collection. They are very happy to get you beers from the adjacent brewery. The mild was an absolute treat.

We arrived at midday and within minutes the pub was full and a hive of activity. Friendly atmosphere. We had our dog with us and that wasn’t a problem. Good selection of meals though no chips. Even so our meals …steak pie and mince and dumplings were delicious as was the fruit crumble and custard. The two staff were worked off their feet but very efficient. Lots of people choosing the sandwich and/or soup option. Very cosy and nice to see a country pub clearly so popular and doing so well.

Food was very basic, but well cooked. Smells inside and outside because of the stream. There was only one table in but they’d ran out of the chicken and mince dishes. We decided to sit outside but all you could see your crates and barrels. We ordered a shandy and you could barely taste the beer. Unfortunately won’t be coming back

Arrived with family friends into the bar where we were greeted by bar staff and pointed to our table. We then realised we had no menus and it was self service at the bar which could have been explained. We asked the bar staff what fruity ciders were available and I was presented with a flat “no”. There was no suggestion of an alternative. We ordered three steaks pies and pesto pasta. What actually arrived was beef slop with a pastry lid, meat swimming in water and floating onions. If I was to drink dish water that would have had more flavour so hence had to empty pots of salt and pepper to add flavour. The only surprise about the pasta was the addition of a tomato garnish cut into four chunks sat on the edge of the plate. The pesto was not fresh and tasted like a shop bought jar. On our quick exit we overheard the bar staff say to a customer who was trying to order food (god help him) “you won’t get that anytime soon…it’s too late”. It was only 7:45pm. I’m not sure how this place survives and how it’s had previously good food reviews. Avoid at all costs.

Excellent food and lovely beer. We were enjoying both until a crowd of locals came in. The night went downhill instantly from that moment. The locals are extremely cliquey, rude and like to "crowd out" anyone not local. One of them stood right on top of me with her backside in my face when I was in the middle of eating. I had to move seats to get away from her. My other half said "excuse me" twice when going to the bar and the loo, but was completely ignored both times. Had the locals being less cliquey, we would have liked to have stayed for a few more drinks. However, because we felt so unwelcome, we left after just the one drink. P.S. the curry is no longer on the menu, but the website hasn't been updated to reflect this.

Haven't been here for quite a few years so didn't know what to expect. Nicely decorated with good atmosphere and large garden. Dogs allowed. Very helpful barmaid. Good, varied selection of food and beer for such a small pub. Not very busy but food took a long time to arrive; I take that to indicate that it is largely freshly cooked to order. Tomato and vegetable soup was rather bland - not much tomato flavour. I realise that it is difficult for small pubs to remain viable, but I feel that the landlady really needs a bit of help in the kitchen to speed up food preparation.

Following a walk in the woods we were looking forward to a Sunday lunch here, but this was not an option. We were staying in the area and had the Dipton Mill Inn recommended to us by the owner of our B&B in Allendale, and we're so glad we took the suggestion. The landlady here was working alone and told us there would be a wait on food, which we were fine with. While we waited, we chatted and took in the atmosphere: this is a beautiful, classic little pub, a perfect example of what British pubs are meant to be. You can feel the love and care that has gone into this place and everything about our experience was warm: the good food, the lovely service, the gentle nattering of the other patrons and the log burner in the centre of the room. The food was simple, delicious, hearty food. We stayed for dessert and were thrilled when we rolled out, full and happy. Overall, a really lovely experience.

We had a lovely evening in this very atmospheric country pub. The food was delicious, homemade and authentic, mushroom soup with a cheese scone for starters, a generous portion of haddock with a tasty tomato sauce for mains, and then a rhubarb crumble. All for a very reasonable price and we were made to feel very welcome by the landlady. The homebrewed beer and ales were very good, and a nice change from the usual selection of beverages. There are also wonderful walks nearby, so I would say it's well worth a visit.

Would not recommend this place, food was terrible and not a large selection? Only one starter was written on the board, waited ages for 4 meals to arrive all looking the same on the plate swimming in water and lacking any flavour. Waitress didn’t look happy either. The pub is lovely, nestled in a beautiful spot. Atmosphere is warm and staff [landlady, for most part] are genial and welcoming. One can get beer brewed on site, a very nice local addition. However, the food was awful, in that none of the dishes we had contained any flavour at all, really. I emptied a salt shaker, and much of a pepper pot onto my vegetable casserole to try and induce some taste into the dish, but to little avail, This was the same for the 3 meat dishes we also ordered. Vegetables were boiled soft. So, recommend a visit but not for food!

Lovely example of a unique pub in a special location that's been family run (for the best part of 30 years) but now more than ever needs the support of punters to get them through these super tough times. Despite the landlady somehow managing to run the bar and kitchen single handed, she served us mince, dumpling and fresh vegetables that were not only very tasty but everything was perfectly cooked. Bravo and well done. Beer's lovely too :)

A lovely pub in a country setting, the menu was limited and sadly for the young ones there was not a chip in site. Any prospective dining pub owner/chef should come here to see how it's done.
