Stayed here in late August 2024 in room 4. On a board outside it said luxery rooms so I expected something a little better than basic.my room was bad,on the sideboard with tea tray it had ring stains fron the mugs, stains on the furniture next to it TV was tiny portable in corner ,tea tray cheap plastic tray with cheap coffee tubes and tiny plastic uht milk pots. The room was soulless and no colour just all browns and beige and tired ugly carpet infact the whole room was tired. Loose tap fitting in bathroom. No iron. When you state luxery a customer expects a little more, I have stayed in Cheaper places than this and they are bright and modern, that room should never been advertised as luxery as I say dark drab stained furniture etc it needs tlc to be call luxery.

tbf, I didnt stay here, but had a dinner with 8 others. I found the staff to be exceptionally helpful and kind. Not just with us, there was a personal drama between a couple and the bar manager handled it with grace and humour. The food was well cooked and presented. We all agreed to go back. Definitely worth a visit.

Warm greeting by friendly staff. One of the first nights back “indoors” after Covid restrictions. Nice menu choice. We had sea trout with crab sauce and sea vegetables, and the steak and ale pie, followed by treacle tart with burnt orange marmalade. Very good food, prompt service. A recent change of management has led to varying reviews of people's dining experiences and it was with a little trepidation we decided to try our luck - we have lived in Staverton for over 30 years and seen the pub go through highs and lows. Thankfully we had a lovely meal, with friends. The pub was reasonably full adding to the friendly ambience and we were greeted with enthusiasm by Callum and his staff. The food was very good - everyone in our group enjoyed their meal ( some of whom are very picky !!). We were very relieved as we wish to support our local facilities and had feared that negative reviews would lead to possible loss of a much loved local hostelry. They have obviously learnt from the early negative comments as the menu was less complicated and reasonably priced.Beer is still expensive but, in contrast, the wine was very competitive, £18 - £25 and good quality. At the end of the day you. want to feel that you received value for money and have a happy and relaxed experience, this we had in abundance.Thank you Sea Trout, keep up the good work and we will certainly be regular diners !

Lovely day, decided to pop to the Sea Trout for a pint and a bite. The beer as usual was great, Palmers 200, very tasty. The food however was a different matter, I had the 8oz burger (?) more like maybe 5-6oz, overcooked and dry. In contrast, the skinny fries were undercooked and uneaten :-( At no time was I asked how the food was or whether we enjoyed the meal. I would have been delighted to provide constructive feedback.

Four of us decided to re-visit the Sea Trout last Saturday evening, as we understood it had re-opened and we had not eaten there for some time. I write to say how disappointed we were with the experience and would be interested in your (manager)comments. The four meals were:2 Sirloin steaks, Main course Mussels and Sea Trout. One of the steaks was so tough it was inedible (agreed by waiter and chef) and was returned, replaced with a completely different and tender one after a 15 minute wait. The main course mussels looked like a starter – maybe 18 - 20 with hardly any meat in them at all. £16.95?The Sea Trout (my order) was particularly poor. About 2 and a half inches square and one quarter of an inch thick it weighed probably less than 3 ounces, dried out and over cooked, on a small bed of scrunched new potatoes, part of which was only half cooked, on a barely warm plate. The salad was less then exciting and the dressing acidic. £!6.95 ?Yes, it was brought to the attention of the waiter, but we decided, probably foolishly, not to make a scene in front of other diners. The drinks were expensive - £4 for a pint, hate to think what a glass of wine was. And we felt disinclined to order an expensive sweet.Anyway we left, £114 poorer, and hungry after a disappointing evening.I don’t make a habit of complaining, but after a sleepless and stomach empty night felt I should let you know. Still waiting for response on most of above from Sea Troit, after partial explanation that they sometimes ger a bad steak, and drink prices set by brewery

I do not write bad reviews very often as normally the customer care makes up for any inconsistancies, however for this pub sadly we did not leave feeling satisfied with our experience. I would like to start by saying that both the waiter and waitress were absolutely fantastic and they are the main reason i didnt leave a 'terrible' review. It has been previously mentioned in other reviews the food is not cheap, therefore you expect decent food. We were really looking forward to the sea bream and trout but these were notnon the menu. I had the hallomi fries as starter, these were great. My husband had the garlic mushrooms which came with a horrible tasting grilled bit of what looked like hovis. Mushrooms good, bread inedible. We overlooked this as my husband doesnt really care about bread. For mains we had the mussels and seafood conchiglie. Again the mussels came with what appeared to be a bit of hovis white. All was going well until my husband hit a bad mussel. I had to urge my husband to complain because bad mussels are not something to be taken lightly. My husband brought up this complaint in a mild mannered way with the manager. The manager was at first defensive saying the mussels were brought fresh that morning and then that my husband had eaten all but 3 mussels (not actually true) - basically accused us of trying to get a free meal and was very stand offish. Eventually he offered to take the mussels off our bill but this definitely did not make up for our experience and we will not be returning.

We called in here yesterday afternoon and got 2 soft drinks and it came to £9.60!!! In our local pub (The Dartmoor Halfway) I can get a pint of cider and a gin and lemonade for less!!Upon questioning this the bar staff told me it wasn't them that made the prices, it was the brewery and they don't serve tap lemonade either. That's fair enough, but don't pore me a pint of lemonade from a schweppes bottle that you can buy in most supermarkets for £1 and then charge me £4 for it!!No wonder we were the only people in the pub.

Having picked up my sister from Totnes station, we were on the look out for somewhere to have lunch when we saw the signs for the Sea Trout Inn and duly followed them! Lovely garden setting with shade (luckily as it was a hot and sunny day) and where we enjoyed a very pleasant light lunch. Couldn't fault it, sardines and mackerel very good but gosh the drinks were a bit steep! £8.95 for a glass of wine?! Luckily I didn't know at the time or I wouldn't have had two:-) One grumble I do have (and it's more to do with my husband) is that I wish some establishments wouldn't offer to keep your credit card behind the bar. I do understand the reasoning but it places the customer at risk of being liable for any unauthorised transactions as your credit card contract requires you to agree not let the card out of your sight. My husband thinks it saves time rather than having to keep paying as you go along but it's a big risk, especially as cards are now contactless. Apart from that, it was a lovely lunch and well done the Sea Trout Inn!

my wife and I booked in for an early meal on our way to the Dartington Ways with Words Festival. we had booked a table but it was a nice evening and asked to eat outside, a few yards away. I was asked to leave my credit card behind the bar which I never do for obvious reasons, plus I object to the attitude of not trusting the customer in case he walks off without paying. We were also told table service was not available outside. we went inside and on the menu was 'pan fried Brixham Sea Bass with Charlotte potatoes and wilted spinach and crispy capers' I asked the waitress if this was wild sea bass ( it is in short supply ) and was told it was. When it arrived , minus the capers it was clear that this sea bass had spent its life swimming in circles in a fish farm in Greece. at £18.50 I would have had the fish and chips! I questioned the landlord who said it came from Brixham where his fish merchant was. he would check the invoice which he did not. he knocked off the price of a pudding (£7.50 ) and I left feeling annoyed my wife upset because she hates confrontation, not that there was any. The fact is that this pub is not alone in misrepresenting what is on offer, talking to my fish merchant today he says it is common. I am afraid it is misrepresentation plain and simple. The staff were pleasant, the rest of the meal was good, but to take customers as being unable to tell the difference between wild and farmed fish is an insult. I would have thought it infringed Trading Standards Legislation. No doubt the landlord will bleat some excuse but he knew what he was selling. There are plenty of pubs and we will not go there again

Went as a family for early dinner, on a special moules frites deal night. We're not local, but had been recommended it, and the mussels pulled us in! Lovely garden, and very friendly waiting staff. My wife had the baked camembert and it went downhill from there. It arrived cold, so cold I could stick my finger in the middle and feel it wasn't warm and sticky. The waitress asked how it was, and my wife, who doesn't like to complain, mentioned the temperature, and she very quickly took it away and returned in a few minutes. Unfortunately, it was no different??!! The waitress asked again and offered to take it away and said they would get it as hot as possible. She returned a couple of minutes later and said the chef had said 'this is as hot as we can do it'. It was still tepid. All along the toast with it had remained the same and by this time was cold and hard....she left the dish. I had the mussels, which tasted good but were rammed with sand, very gritty and crunchy, so I ate as much as I could but had to draw a line. Two kids had fish fingers and chicken nuggets. The nuggets apparently tasted good but strange, the fish fingers were more like fillets, but seemed ok. When I paid no mention was made of the problems, and it turned out the funny tasting nuggets were scampi, not great that the difference wasn't immediate. Chips were poor. We left a lot of food and didn't have anything else. A real shame.

This is such a pretty pub in a lovely setting very near the Steam Railway and some lovely walks by the river. My cousin booked for Sunday lunch the four of us hadnt seen each other for a while. The staff are lovely, very friendly and efficient. We all ordered the roast three of us had beef and one turkey. The beef was very tasty but slightly chewy and the yorkshire was almost cold. The vegetables came in two small earthenware bowls (not the same size either one was very small) and to be honest we could have eaten a bowl each, although when we asked the waitress did kindly bring us another bowl. I think too a few extra potatoes in a bowl left on table would have been nice, they were extremely delicious but we had three each. It was a tasty meal, but, there are a lot of lovely pubs in Devon, many of them serving tasty food and I think the prices were slightly high for what we had and with so much competition I dont know if I would choose to eat a Sunday roast here again. The pudding was yummy, a take on sticky toffee, but again I thought a little pricey and the cheese even more. With a few tweeks the roast could have been excellent, it was a shame because it is a lovely place.

It is a lovely establishment, nice welcoming atmosphere on arrival and lunch was very enjoyable. We felt very comfortable and relaxed, the furnishings and decor beautifully kept. Cod, chips and peas was a good choice, the fish was perfect, and went down a treat and the mushy peas were the best we have had, gorgeous taste and texture. Staying at nearby Dartington Hall we ventured out to the Sea Trout on a cold dark November night and the phone SatNav lost service just as we came across a very narrow section of road even for Devon standards with poles either side of the road which we just managed to squeeze through. Visited this Inn on the second night of a holiday near Totnes, Devon. We didnt book so we were pleased to get a table, although it was in the bar. We were given menus immediately, our party being six adults and two small girls. We waited aaaages to get a drink and place our order - we thought that wait was bad enough, my god the rest didnt turn up for over an hour despite our asking twice where our food had got to - (The landlady was more interested in being part of the book club meeting being held in another room, she seemed very annoyed at having to get up and help in the bar!) we really had not ordered anything exotic!! The girls were so hungry and tired - mind you so were we!! When the food came it was ok, however my meal, scampi and chips was literally thrown into a bowl - I am sure it was a child's meal - even though my grandaughter's meal was very nicely presented!! Just couldnt be bothered with any further wait or hassle, we paid the bill and left, never to return!!

Visited a couple of days ago based on Tripadvisor 'Certificate of Excellence' but was sadly disappointed. Confit Duck Leg was flabby and underseasoned, the sauce tasted strongly of thyme and nothing else, the confit potato was a boring lump of spud and whoever thinks serving lumps of multi-coloured 'heritage' carrot and no other vegetable makes for a tasty accompaniment is clearly deluded. Good food isn't expensive - this was extortionate.

We had a lovely table overlooking the garden, on a very pleasant evening. I am sad to say I was very disappointed with my roast lamb dinner. It was a Sunday but I didn't expect to get left over roast potatoes from lunch time. They were so hard I couldn't get my knife or fork into them, I like crispy roast potatoes, but these were reheated, making them inedible. They were replaced with some very nice mash potatoes. The rest of the family were quite pleased with there choices.

Visiting family in the village and visited the resteraunt for T on our last night there. Very cute and traditional looking, quiet atmosphere. Staff were very nice and welcoming- spot on Food was amazing and the portion sizes were lager than I expected which is always welcomed! My boyfriend had fish, chips and peas which was a great size and very tasty but it couldn't beat my roast beef Sunday dinner with veg and Yorkshire pudding was to die for and so much food was very tasty and filling and fast service! We managed to get some pudding in also! Brownie and ice cream was the highlight of my dining experience! We will definatly be visiting again in may for our anniversary date meal :) Thanks for the lovely dinner and night!

We ordered pints and lunch after a scenic walk along the Dart River. Food was nicely presented, tasty and portions were generous. Hope to be back again someday soon. Loved the gammon steak, onion rings and ploughman's lunch.

My wife and I visited here for lunch. The service was friendly and the food excellent. Having had six consecutive days of fancy dining, we were in need of some basic fayre and went for the sausage and mash. Although this is standard pub grub, it was excellent. Obviously there was a lot more on the menu offering a wide choice. We will happily go back again.

We have stayed and eaten here several times over the past 20 years. It has changed very little, though the exterior has been smartened up since our last visit about six years ago. The location is excellent if you want to walk alongside the Dart or travel on the South Devon heritage railway. On a dull Tuesday in March it was pretty busy at lunchtime. We were not very hungry and just had snacks, but what we had was OK. Recommend for the location and typical comfy pub ambience.

We attended the Steak night and were very pleased to see the menu full of interesting morsels for us to try. The three of us had all the starters between us and were not disappointed by the cheesy mushrooms, mozarella deep fried and the buffalo shrimps - lovely tasty dishes ideally sized for an apperitif. My son opted for the sword fish steak which he was very pleased with, I had the rib eye which was cooked to perfection, nicely seasoned with delicious flavour. The puddings were to die for, with pancakes and Sundaes to finish off a lovely meal. I will definitely be going back in the very near future. The restaurant was peaceful and the tables not too close together which is one of my pet hates. Well recommended for a lovely Saturday night out ;)

We arrived just before 9pm as working late, chef very kindly stayed open for us, superb service, rooms faultless, a traditional inn with such character hard to find these days. Rooms very clean, modern very comfortable design, food matches that of my excellent overall experience. Would highly recommend. Thank you The Sea Trout Inn!

Our first visit her for about 3 years during which it has changed hands. Having had our expectations raised by recent reviews I am afraid we were rather disappointed. The welcome was certainly warm and friendly but for a dining pub the menu was fairly ordinary with little sign of innovation. My wife ordered sea bass only to be told it was unavailable. She said her second choice of hake and chips was good but my gammon steak was too tin (often the case) which meant it was dry and not particularly tasty. Only 2 other tables out of about 25 were occupied so not a lot of atmosphere.

Called in here a few days ago. Several of us cycling from Ipplepen to Totnes and stopped here for coffee. The lunch looked so good that we stayed for lunch and it was just as good as it looked. Lovely decor, staff friendly and clearly well trained and a very good lunch menu at reasonable prices. Will certainly recommend and call again.

This pub is fairly local to us and good to pop in for a drink or a meal. We have eaten here a few times now and have found it a nice easy going place to spend a few hours.I believe it did change hands a while ago but all seems well with locals in the bar most days. They have a large dinning room to one side but quite a few good tables in the bar if you prefer. There's a big car park too.Food is good pub grub. Have already recommended to family and friends.

Next pub i passed thought I needed a pint. Place looks lovely and very traditional.Came inside and realized it was a palmers pub, not a lover of palmer ales thought id try a pint of gold, pint seemed to pour slowly and was cloudy straight from the pour, taking over a minute to clear. First taste showed temperature was ok but beer had a faint off taste something not completely right but I cant work out what, but not too my tatse and not how other pints of gold had tasted. The beer lacked depth and left no trace down the glass and after the first quarter became lifeless and flat very quickly. The place looks nice but beer not the best.

The staff were very professional and friendly. Nothing was any trouble for them The food, especially the seafood platter is out of this world..Desserts also were really nice. Yhe price is probably what you would expect for fine dining because this is exactly what this place does. We paid just over £70. for two three course meals.Drinks not included. We were on holiday and it was a treat.

The new location of the Hairy Barista is my go to place in town for everything good….. There is nothing these guys can do wrong in my eyes…. They serve great coffee, chai ( a definite favourite of mine)amongst many other interesting things inc Kombucha and Kefir drinks… I love their food offerings wether it be a simple filled croissant to their always hearty soups or specials. I will continue to support them as often as I can afford. They do things with the most amount of integrity and genuine passion and that means a lot in my world. You only have to look at how busy they are day to day to know they have hit a sweet spot 🙏🙏

What a great, lovely little pub, nice and cozy, great service and when it came to the food, well, outstanding main courseoff the specials board, great portions, you will not be(shouldn't be) going home hungry. Highly recommend Thank you to all the staff for a lovely evening

We realise that this restaurant cannot provide a large menu especially during the autumn /winter but on our evening the fish choice was not on (replaced with a lazy prawn dish) and out of two desserts the crumble was also not available! Feel this is lazy as there is so much fish available locally and the excuses to not provide an apple crumble is in fact rather lazy from the kitchen. If you only want to offer pizzas and burgers, fine but don’t disappoint people with omissions.

What a lovely place to spend an afternoon! We were fortunate to be able to sit outside on a lovely sunny day for lunch. The BBQ worked really well and you could easily spend the time ordering nibbles from the menu and drinking copious amounts of Rose
