Great pub. We visit here every time we come to Edinburgh. Friendly staff superb atmosphere and although we didn’t eat here this time we have before and it’s always been lovely

Saturday night dinner. Overall we had a lovely time, it was busy and energetic. The ambience and rapport of the bar helped make it more special, as it has a history for cocktails, clean toilets and good choice. Had two cocktails each, small and overpriced but nice, and the venison and the duck. Really expensive for two meals and four drinks! We won't be back, the service wasn't excellent and we did have to get the waiters attention, aside from being ignored for the dessert order. It will be a one time visit, I'm afraid. Some staff should definitely have some more training or be on their whereabouts when busy. Overall great but certainly not the best for the price paid.

Rightly a very busy place - beautiful location, the forthcoming hostess made us feel welcome even when every table was occupied and promptly picked one for us immediately when one was available. The whiskey selection is unrivaled. If you can't make up your mind, I highly recommend taking the Scottish Road Trip whiskey flight, which includes Raasay Single Malt. Also, if you feel so inclined - the chips with parmesan cheese and truffles are outstanding, and the mini desserts are worth every penny too. Definitely don't miss this spot if looking to spend an evening tasting prime whiskey in a secluded hideaway from the main street.

Stunning atmosphere but the staff weren’t attentive

A cozy intimate setting off the busy Royal Mile. A perfect place to take a break from sight seeing with a long leisurely lunch.

We had to wait at the bar as dinner doesn't start until 16:30. Staff were pleasant and service was quick. Great atmosphere and very reasonable in price considering how incredible the food was!

Restaurant in a small street near the train station, the setting is very cozy. We had a main course (roasted salmon with an excellent brandy bisque sauce for 24 pounds), a dessert (crème brûlée with a little whiskey). Tasted with a perfect smoked whisky. I highly recommend

Really poor service with snobbish staff. We were told to sit at a table that was clearly too small for the group and when I pointed this out got a 'yeah and...' shrug. Won't be back, there are amazing cocktail bars in Edinburgh with friendly staff.

Nice walk into on a close off Royal Mile. Seating upstairs and quaint with a dark old world vibe. Food was delicious, had the duck. Whisky tasting was very helpful in knowing where my palate laid for the rest of the trip. Our server, Leah, was wonderful very helpful and had a great sense of humor. Highly recommend for a fun enjoyable evening out.

We had dinner at the terrice at 2°C, but not chilly at all. There's heating lamp for each table that you could choose to turn on, and a blanket on the side when you need. I ordered an 8oz ribeye with the tomato sauce and the kiwi cocktail and everything taste amazing. the portions suit my appetite. service was great too, many servers passing by so its convenient if you need anything. I think the experience is worth the price.

Great atmosphere, was busy but in a great way. Very attentive staff, the food was excellent - we had a whisky flight, a local cider along with Venison (pictured), Duck, and a charcuterie (pictured) to start. Would go back in a heartbeat!

Wasn’t sure what to expect because there are some mixed reviews but this was great. I had the pork main dish which was very flavoursome, really liked it. Good beers. Cozy space, friendly staff.

Wife and I had a great evening in here. Dog friendly in the bar area too! They brought water over immediately for our little pup. Amazing top quality cocktails with ingredients I’d never even heard of which I always enjoy. We also had a flight of 4 whiskies for £20 which we thought was good value and we enjoyed sampling them.

Omg after reading the reviews I thought we have to try this place...disappointed NOT A CHANCE. It lived up to the reviews and definitely recommend the black pudding starter and the pork as a main. Hubby had soup to start and fish and chips. Sounds boring but he was loving every mouthful. Amazing experience thank you

Overpriced small portions, honestly a little boring as well. You can walk into any pub with over 4 stars rating and it will be better and less expensive than this restaurant. Even my red wine was bland, but around 3 pounds more expensive than any other place we went to. We were in Edinburgh for 1 week and this was our least favorite dinner. Just go to a nice pub and you'll have more fun for less money!

My dad and I had dinner at the Devil's Advocate on Christmas's Eve. I can't find the words to best describe the absolutely brilliant welcoming, care and service we were offered. One staff member (possibly the manager or head waiter) went over and beyond to overcome some very understandable setbacks, due to the venue being quite busy, and ensured we had the most satisfying experience. We had incredible, high quality food and very generously offered drinks. My father, who was visiting for Christmas, had a terrific time and I was very pleased with it. I had been to the DA once before to try their whisky selection, which I had also really enjoyed, so I am confident to say I'll choose the DA again, as I'm curious about their daily menu.

in my opinion a must in Edinburgh, discovered this place by chance we managed to book a table for dinner (always book to be safe) intimate, romantic and soft environment. we tasted a delicious black haggies (as an appetizer)! then two second courses (deer meat and a pork fillet), these two dishes are also delicious, perfect flavors between them, perfect combination and right portion even with the price plus a glass of wine and a water and two desserts (shame about those that weren't the best) Fast service, very friendly staff highly recommended go there!!!!!!!

Very welcoming place, warm in its Edinburgh pub atmosphere but with a touch of industrial style. We ordered duck breast and flat iron steak. Unfortunately, due to an error in the kitchen, my duck breast was brought much later than the other course but the wait was worth it, a truly delicious dish. Due to too much waiting, the duck breast was taken off our bill without us asking for anything. A gesture of great attention towards the customer, mistakes happen to everyone and the staff remedied them with style. Highly recommended, book in advance!

I booked in advance to get a table for lunch, and the food and beers did not disappoint! I was hoping to eat calamari, though, which was unavailable, so I went with the cliched fish and chips.

Delicious food! Steak and truffle parmesan fries. Many special cocktails and whiskey tasting for only 20 dollars.

Before my visit to Edinburgh, I did a lot of research. The Devil’s Advocate was the only restaurant that surpassed the hype. The food was amazing, the drinks were fantastic and the team was really friendly and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this place.

Booked this place for Christmas Eve dinner. From the service to the food, everything was incredible. The haggis was the best I've had, the salmon and the venison were perfectly cooked and the sauce with the salmon was just unreal. Incredible value for a 3 course meal that included a complimentary glass of cava for booking early. The staff were very lovely and attentive.

Booked in advance for the Christmas menu. It was sumptuous and scintillating. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The atmosphere was comfortable and classy. I would destroy plates of their haggis. Book your seat here for the best experience!

An incredibly underwhelming experience. We were sat outside in winter, even though we asked for a table inside and it was clear there was some available. I very rarely leave negative reviews but feel compelled after an experience where we paid top dollar but were clearly underrated customers.

Came highly recommended but it was such a disappointment. Beautiful bar with a lovely menu and good cocktails. Such a shame about the service. We were paraded past empty tables to the terrace which was outside in the freezing cold in December. Perhaps they didn’t like tourists? Or maybe it was the fact that we were Australians. Nonetheless when you pay a big premium, I would have expected the bare minimum.

Fiancé and I came in for their Christmas 3 course 40£ each dinner. Which is a great price for the amount included! The atmosphere is very nice with a candlelit moody vibe. The drinks were really good, we enjoyed some Macallen mixed drinks which were amazing, their espresso martini was also really yummy! They were really busy and the service was a little lack of, but that was mostly to do with our waitress accidentally dropping a whole tray of drinks on the gentleman behind us. We felt so bad for her as we saw her in complete disarray and tears, I just wanted to give her a big hug. They catered to this big group 1000%, took their drinks off the bill and offered them their best bottle of wine and even ordered the man a taxi. I felt they handled it as best they could. The food portions were decent and everything had a lot of flavor. I would come back and try this place again! Nothing really negative to say other than the staff were clearly dealing with a lot that night, but accidents happen.

Came through on my last night in town with my daughter (Berlin) and fisnce. Tried to get a couple drinks at the bar. Bartender was rude, blew us off, while the other ignored us while shoveling ice.,,.too bard, the city was great apart from this Maybe just for locals

By far the WORST you can get in terms of restaurant and service in Edinburgh. Apart from the incompetent waitress who poured an entire tray of hot toddys on me. We spent 3 hours in the restaurant mostly waiting. The best part was the 30 mn wait for desserts because she decided to sit down and chat with her friends while we were waiting. Hardly a sincere apology. Terrible place.

I really liked the vibe of this restaurant. It had indoor and outdoor seating. Nice atmosphere. It was very busy and needed to make a reservation. We just walked in with no reservation. Unfortunately, we could only sit in a booth in the bar area. They have a bar menu separate from the regular menu. We had the small charcuterie board and garlic fries. Very yummy. Food took a while, but it was busy for the holidays.

The set 3 course Christmas menu was nicely varied and as a party of 7 we ordered right across it. All dishes were rated excellent and flavoursome. Adaptations were made by pre order for my friend who is gluten free. The atmosphere was Christmassy in a foliage and white lights way with a soul based playlist. Service was very friendly and attentive but discreet. It was noisy but at this time of year when fully booked and the wine is flowing but you expect that. Would recommend.

After being told this is one of the best restaurants to go in Edinburgh we are underwhelmed by the quality of the food and the atmosphere. It’s not bad but really nothing special.

I’ve booked this ahead of time for my partner’s birthday meal. I have mentioned this when booking the table. When we turned up we were informed our table will be late due to some sort of event being held where our table is at. The hostess gave us an option to wait at the bar or outside. Wouldn’t be an issue if the bar had absolutely no space to stand and outside was in minus temperatures (it snowed the next day!). When we eventually got taken up to our table, we’ve ordered the steaks which we’ve asked to be done as medium. One of the steaks was quite a bit thicker than the other and was definitely on the blue side. There was nothing done to make my partners birthday feel special as this was disregarded. Disappointing.

First time in here and I can't recommend it enough! The atmosphere was lively, the music was great but not too loud you couldn't here your companion. We ordered from the Xmas menu. I had mushroom duxelle bon bons to start. They were so crunchy on the outside and deliciously soft in the middle. What a great way to serve mushrooms. Main I had the most succulent pork that melted in my mouth with amazing crackling. The vegetables it sat on complimented the dish well, but my favourite find was the little pieces of panchetta that offset the sweetness perfectly. I don't know how I managed a dessert but I chose the orange curd tart with chocolate truffle centre. Delightful 😊

£35 for a rib eye steak that was 90% fat. Had better meat at Wetherspoons. Fine for drinks but for eating, avoid this place at all costs. Chop House does a top knotch fillet for £40 odd

Went to The Devil's Advocate for lunch and cocktails on my partners birthday and could not fault, we had a Charcuterie Platter to share and two cocktails, the plan being to leave at 5pm. We ended up having four more cocktails and reluctantly left at 7:30pm as we had another reservation for dinner elsewhere. Everything was lovely, the cocktails were perfect and all tasted great. Platter was also tasty and exact amount for a lighter late lunch shared between two. Staff were friendly and proficient.

Fabulous food, amazing drinks and fantastic atmosphere! If you’re looking for a place that’s a bit hidden and offers insanely good food this is it! Make sure to pre-book!

Drinks - Too few non-alcoholic drinks - Seedlip Basil Smash (absolute disgrace for the price of 7 quids, not tasty, not elaborately prepared, tastes like a cheap soda, a little more than a shot) Starter fish platter - Salmon (should actually be a warm and cold plate) - Not enough bread (should we eat the dip like that?) - Cold fried fish - When we criticized the plate, we only received 4 more pieces of bread. Main course - If I reserve a table in the shop because I want to eat a Flat Iron, and the Flat Iron ends up not being available anymore, you are of course disappointed. - With such a manageable menu, dishes MUST be easily available. - The alternative didn't blow me away. - Dish was only lukewarm Unfortunately, the food is not as convincing as the ambience. I wouldn't reserve a table here again. We canceled the table that we had reserved for the next day.

Unfortunately, I don't know where the sometimes outstanding ratings of the food come from, but unfortunately we can't confirm that. The hot and cold fish starter was completely overpriced and poorly prepared for the price of £19. The fried sardines were cold and tough, the salmon slices all clumped together and at least 25% of the plate consisted of cornichons and mixed pickles. There were also a total of 2 slices of bread and 4 crackers for the whole plate. Only one non-alcoholic cocktail was offered which comes in a mini glass <100ml. The main course tasted okay, but the side dishes on the warmed plate were only lukewarm. Overall, the menu reads quite well, but is also really clear. If what you want to eat isn't available at all, that's not convincing either. Therefore the visit was more than disappointing. There are much better addresses out there.

Ho Wow! We were first attracted by the place, a little hidden, by the cook we met who seemed super nice, then by the tempting menu. Suddenly, the evening arrives and we venture there hoping to find space. It’s amazing, and once the meal is finished we understand why! The dishes were just incredibly delicious, the service perfect, friendly and stress-free and the atmosphere crazy. We'll have to come back to Edinburgh just to go home! 🤩
