Stopped in here for a drink after wandering around the Royal Mile. I'm not a huge cocktail drinker but do enjoy a Manhattan which was fine but definitely a fan of the 'Under the Hat'. Excellent cocktail!! Ordered a cold meat platter as well which was ok & staff were very helpful & accommodating.

We intended to have drinks, stayed for food on the terrace under cover and with a heat lamp. Great food and atmosphere, really friendly and accommodating staff. I love the way allergies are managed with list of all for each item on the menu which makes it so much easier to order without feeling as though you are causing an issue . Went with 3 friends, We all had something different, all enjoyed our meal immensely.

Such a wonderful find in the heart of Edinburgh! This charming pub nestled in one of the city's characteristic closes, the Advocate's Close, offers a delightful experience. Big disappointment :-( The service was pulling us by the nose... After 30 minutes, when I went to ask if they had our order, I was told that they didn't have whiskey anymore... I don't understand why they made us wait so long... Never again - definitely go somewhere where the staff has time for you. I don't understand why the bar has such high references.. We're flying home at night, so I'm looking forward to drinking Scotch whiskey in Prague if they don't serve me in Scotland :-)))

We stopped in here for a drink ( we had pre booked a table beforehand to make sure we got one). Our table was outside under a canopy. Luckily, although windy, the external patio heater at the table was burning away constantly (keep pushing the button), and by keeping our coats on, we were all able to keep warm in the April sunshine. The cushions on the bench were a bit damp as we found out when we left (damp trousers). Maybe it would be better to take the cushions inside at night to dry them off. We ordered our drinks, which came out a while later. The server did apologise for the delay as they were quite busy. Unfortunately, the cocktails that we had ordered tasted terrible. Let's just say the description on the menu wasn't what came to the table. Tasteless, apart from the long island ice tea and the expresso martini. The latte was small, full of foam, and tasted bitter the one shot americano was very strong and bitter. The servers were polite and a good laugh. Our bill had extra items added to it, to the value of £30! However, after we pointed it out to the servers, they immediately rectified it. Can't comment on the food as we were drinking only.

Such an amazing restaurant! It was recommended by a colleague, and we visited for lunch during our time in Edinburgh. Make sure you book in advance as it can get quite busy. You can reach this hidden gem from High Street by the Advocates Close, a narrow historical alley. It feels like you're going for an adventure. And it was such a culinary adventure- the food, atmosphere and service were simply fantastic! Service was welcoming and friendly. They have a huge whiskey selection and wines as well. The food was incredible! We started with a small smoked fish sharing platter and the soup of the day. The soup was packed with flavour! My main was their beef burger, and although I'm not a big fan of beef, this burger tasted amazing! The beef patty was juicy, and the fries were nice and crispy. My partner really enjoyed the fish and chips. The fish was delicious, sauce was tasty, and the chips were so crispy. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely come back on my next visit to Edinburgh!

We ended up spending very late hours of the evening on a weeknight here and it was still busy which speaks for itself. The bartender are very knowledgeable of the 300+ whiskies they have there and we got recommended exactly the type we were after. We also tried a cocktail and it was good too, unique blend and cool presentation. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to try some food but it looked lovely.

Worst dining experience in Edinburgh. Slow service, OK food, but we were enjoying ourselves nontheless. Then we were REPEATEDLY told we needed to leave the table by the manager, less then 2 hours after our reservation, had not even recieved our desert yet, or a bill. It was so uncomfortable and awkward, even our waitress seemed apologetic. We felt very unwelcomed. It should not be a customer's fault if the kitchen and waitstaff cannot keep up with the number of bookings. We will never go back.

Came for drinks on a Wednesday. No smile when greeted. Told space at the bar only. There was a free 2 seater booth with a laptop at it. I asked to sit there, was told it was taken. Ordered margaritas- they were delicious. Seat at the bar - occupied by a staff member discussing menu not offered to patrons. Went to the loo. Saw it was a company laptop (had el cartel, DA, lady libertine etc stickers on) Asked again if we could sit there. Bar man said he’d check, he never came back to me. The laptop sat there the whole time we were there with no one at the table. We’d have stayed for more drinks had there been a better atmosphere. Not a good vibe. Disappointing. Went to lady libertine instead. Staff were wonderful, atmosphere was great. Drinks and bar snacks delicious.

I had a fantastic experience and rate this as one of the best restaurants I visited in the few days of Edinburgh. The restaurant is down a close and its seclusion made it a very cool place to get to. The service was good. They had a huge whiskey selection and prearranged flights. We tried one but this drink isn’t our favorite anywhere. Their service and knowledge of it was incredible and I trust this place if someone is looking for that scotch experience. The food was incredible. Truly incredible. The venison steak was my highlight for the evening. It was so flavorful and tender, plated beautifully, and matched with the right extras to bring out all the balanced flavors. The haggis was also delicious, only heightened by the red berry compote and arugula. Together, all the elements of the dish made it a superb dish. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves good food.

My brother and I, on a spontaneous quest for an exceptional cocktail bar, were lured into the arms of Devil’s Advocate in Edinburgh, a decision swayed by its high praise and the allure of discovery. Nestled down a charming alleyway, this bar instantly charmed us with its air of secrecy and exclusivity, making our visit feel like a delightful uncovering of a hidden gem. Upon entry, what was intended to be a brief visit quickly unfolded into an evening of indulgence. Our initial plan to savor just one cocktail each was swept away by the enchanting menu of scotch-based concoctions. We found ourselves embarking on a flavorful journey, sampling around five cocktails each, in a bid to crown our favorite. The selection was not just vast but captivating, offering a deep dive into Scotland's famed spirit. While the ambiance beckoned us to linger longer, the seating arrangement at a high-top table, perched on stools, made the prospect of dining less appealing due to the lack of comfort for extended periods. This minor inconvenience, however, did not dim the glow of our overall experience. A highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the staff, whose warmth and professionalism shone brightly. They navigated our adventurous sampling with expertise and enthusiasm, ensuring each cocktail recommendation was a hit and contributing significantly to our memorable night. Although we did not explore the food menu, our experience at Devil’s Advocate was nothing short of spectacular, defined by exceptional drinks, exemplary service, and the thrill of discovering a hidden treasure in the heart of Edinburgh. It’s a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts and those in search of a special night out.

They ruined our evening and our visitors evening ! Rude manager, non-trained staff ! I have been there several times I have seen kids 7-10 years old .... We arrived with our 2 friends they were visiting Edinburgh for first time and thought to take them somewhere nice after we had a dinner somewhere else. I am 60 and my son is 18 in 2 months. The girl at the shop said we couldn't be at the bar as we had the minor with us . I explained that I am his mother and we wouldn't anyway have alcohol for him .She found a space for us upstairs and outside a nice area with heaters. 15 min later another girl comes with menus. We explained we had dinner already and we only came for a drink. 10min later another girl comes for the order... adults ordered drinks and for my son we ordered an non alcoholic beer. The girl didn't bother to mention anything about ID or that my son couldn't have a non alcoholic beer. 10 min later 2 drinks and the non alcoholic beer are on the table one drink is missing. 10 min later the first girl from the door that found us the table comes with the last drink and she takes away the non alcoholic beer , saying that it is no possible for him to have that drink (??) he can only have a soft drink ... I am already annoyed with all the delays and all these people coming and going without to know what they were saying.... We order a lemonade for my son. When the lemonade arrives ,the girl says that they have another policy (so far only them know their policies but they do not mention to us from the beginning !!) that we should have some food on the table as we had a minor with us !!!!!!!! (A new way of upselling ??) I am furious by then and ready to go .... my friend asks for the manager... the manager comes.... No apologies for his staff that didn't know what they were doing and saying... he says they have this policy that with a minor we must have food on the table (??) or we couldn't be there ... Our drinks are there as we had no time with all this people and talking to have our drinks... my friend says that we already explained that we had dinner elsewhere and she is not going to pay for a drink that she didn't have... the manager says we cannot be on the site !!!! We left ... I work 26 years in hospitality , I travelled many countries .... I never had a worst experience. They ruined our night, they don't know what they are doing , they do not respect the customers and they do not apologise for their absence of training !

The bar itself is really nice. It’s just located up some steep steps on Advocates Lane. When we entered it was busy so we remained standing with our drinks. After a while we noticed some people leaving from up stairs. I decided to walk upstairs to check if a table was free. No longer than 10 seconds and I was being chased and then interrogated on why I was up there by one of their staff. The little blonde man said “Can I help you? You must ask me for a table before you sit down” and on that note, I was ushered back down stairs. Finally found a table downstairs after a couple left which was ideal. Within 5 mins , the same guy was back berating us for bringing in some chocolate treats which hadn’t been opened.(they were just on the table rather than storing them on the floor). This same guy also took a bottle of water off another couple even though they’d bought drinks at the venue. I mean, you go to a pub to relax and drink and within 15 minutes, we’d been told off twice by the guy who was running the door entrance by the computer. This chap is in the wrong trade unfortunately. We’ve done this pub now and from first impressions, have no reason to return. Cheers ! One love .

We came here two years ago and absolutely loved it, so much so that we wanted to visit again on our return visit to Edinburgh this month. This time it was such a disappointment. The starter was nice but the main courses really did not reflect the expensive price tag. Both mains we ordered were quite underwhelming. I ordered the hake (£23) it does not come with a side and as you can see from the picture all you get is a mid-sized piece of fish with some sauce, 2 cherry tomatoes and a few stems of broccoli. (I had eaten a small mouthful of the fish and half a tomato before I decided to take this picture!) unfortunately we didn’t get a picture of my partner’s main but again, we felt it overpriced. This was our experience and our opinion but each to their own!

I guessed it would be less so in the dining part but I was wrong, as it is open plan it was so loud that we could not talk whilst we were having our meal. The food was good and tasty, the portion sizes were great. My smoked paprika & garlic picanha steak was cooked to perfection and the truffle and parmesan chips were tasty. Hubby had the vegetarian option red lentil ragu aubergine, feta, herbs, toasted focaccia which he enjoyed. The service was attentive and efficient. We were going to stay and sample the whiskey flight and some cocktails but we ate up and left. Overall disappointing as the music was way too loud, it spoiled the occasion.

Food was good however, it took ages to arrive. Small menu and comparable to an ‘elevated’ pub. The first waiter took my order and at the end of taking everyone’s order proceeds to tell me my dish isn’t available?? Could’ve told me that from the get-go. The staff were very unpleasant from the moment we got to the restaurant up until we left. The American waitress was rude. Apparently this hasn’t changed since August last year. We met a girl at the mall on the same day who said she had the same experience back then. Funnily enough, I’ve seen more smiles from strangers in London than this place. All 3 were chatting away most of the time while we waited and waited to get drinks initially. Then we were told burgers have all sold out but 2 tables next to ours got their burgers after us. We asked for a bag for our take aways and server was quite rude and dismissive to tell us they didn't have any. Have gone here many times before but will never go back again. Food is good but service and the wait, half hour for food was just not worth the money spent.

I almost don’t want to leave a review for this amazing little bar because it feels like a hidden secret! However, do yourself a favour and check it out - it’s a great little bar tucked away on Advocates Close off the Royal Mile. The staff are super friendly and it has a great atmosphere if you just want to pop in for a drink or eat one of their delicious meals.

Great whisky / cocktail bar with very knowledgable staff. Welcoming and friendly to newcomers to the city and excellent cocktails on offer. Left feeling warm inside.

Booked for 12.00 yesterday having the Jan set menu and arrived at 11.53 and was told by the guy behind the bar who was lounging & talking to 2 young ladies that the place wasn't open yet so I couldn't come in. Not a great 1st impression as the rain and remnants of storm Isha were still blowing outside. At 1200 after saying we had a booking for 3 people he showed us upstairs to a table for 2! Told him again that there were 3 of us and he pointed to another which we quietly changed as it wasn't great (despite no one else there) when he went back downstairs. The set menu was good, I had soup of the day, friends had chickpea samosa to start and we all had the mushroom pesto linguine which we enjoyed. We had teas/coffee to finish and enjoyed our food and the service from the young American girl upstairs. The same guy from downstairs barged in the front door as we were leaving and my friend commented that older ladies like us were invisible to him but if you're going to include service as you did, then he could take some lessons from the young American lady upstairs.

We went previously about 2 years ago and no doubt about it loved it. This time however the music was far too loud and sounded more like I was in a nightclub than enjoying a nice dinner. Steak was good no doubt about it and...

Edinburgh is full of mediocre, and edging towards expensive restaurants. This for me epitomises that genre. Nothing special, tables small, tables too close together, mains expensive and nothing memorable. I wont be back.

Great place to take wife on a date. Very nice cocktails and food. Book in advance, was there on a Wednesday night and they had to turn people away.
