Denise's in Camden

We had the fish main courses, one of us the salmon and the other the sea bass. Both were delicious, with a decent serving of nicely-cooked vegetables, washed down with a very presentable Soave. For dessert we had tiramisu - very good - and the zabaglione - first class. It was great to have proper Italian cooking and the service was attentive and friendly.

We were disappointed by the dining experience in this restaurant. We ordered a pizza and an escalope Milanese. The escalope was rather tough and not as thin as would normally be served. It was served with chips (not made in-house but probably frozen), broccoli and carrots. The breadcrumb coating disintegrated on cutting the escalope. The pizza was of very average quality, probably not produced with in-house made dough. On making a complaint at the end of the meal we were brought complimentary glasses of lemoncella - no doubt because it is a cheaper way for the restaurant to deal with a complaint than giving an actual rebate for poor food. On receiving the bill we were surprised to be automatically charged 12.5% service . The prices here are high and certainly not justified by the quality of the food (two mains and a bottle of house wine came to £75). The service was not good enough to warrant a 12.5% tip. I guess the main clientele here are tourists staying at the many hotels in the area, not regular repeat customers. I would not go back - this is definitely not authentic Italian dining.

I had the veal scallops in lemon sauce. They were very tough with a good chew, so I ate them as I was hungry. The setting is nice and the service was very pleasant. I might choose differently the next time I’m in the area.

I took my wife for dinner here as it looked nice and had good reviews. We had a lovely meal with great service from the staff waiting. The food is absolutely delicious and we will be back next we are in London for sure!! Thanks Sophie's for the great experience.

Very average pizza. Toppings and excessive cheese tasted like budget versions. I had the Messicana pizza and it was no different to a frozen pepperoni you buy in a cost-cutter supermarket. Tiramisu lacked flavour. The staff are friendly and service was good. The restaurant was reasonably busy and has had many good reviews, so maybe I was unlucky this time! I shall not be returning though.

We had dinner here on 10/11 and it was lovely. I had the whole grilled seabass and he had the lasagne. Both were cooked perfectly. Great service from the lovely lady with dark hair.

Great for either a casual lunch or a dinner. Staff was kind and helpful. Its location is a few minute’s walk from British Museum. I recommend its pizza.

Utterly Terrible! I tend to not write bad reviews and ‘move on’ but having eaten at hundreds of backstreet restaurants in Italy and many ‘Italian’ restaurants in England, I have to call a spade a spade…. Garlic bread was from the microwave and the spaghetti bollognese was tasteless and slop like a Heinze tinned meal… Utterly aweful, false platitudes of a shot of lemoncello are as transparent as they are ‘standard’ in any half decent Italian…. you still charged me the full bill plus a service charge… Please just do better in future… this really is unacceptable! As a northerner, u stop eating when the plate is empty… that’s just how it is…. Leaving the bowl over half full says it all….

Sophie is een druk bezocht restaurant. De kwaliteit van het eten is goed. De bediening was vlot. De tafels staan erg dicht op elkaar wat als hinderlijk kan worden beschouwd. Prijs/kwaliteit verhouding, de stad Londen in aanmerking genomen, aanvaardbaar.

Io e mio marito abbiamo cenato due volte in questo ristorante, la prima sera che eravamo a Londra e poi anche una seconda poiché il locale che vi piaceva era chiuso. Comodo al nostro hotel, poiché proprio sottostante, dehor esterno e sala interna. Purtroppo inganna la scritta esterna che dice che si parla italiano ma non è affatto vero. Personale poco cortese, servizio lento. Pulito ma piccolo e troppo buio. Menù abbastanza ampio che sa poco di italiano nonostante venga spacciato per tale. Pizza veramente poco gradevole, buona la caprese, insalata mista talmente piccola che è ridicola , buono il gelato. Prezzi troppo cari per la qualità e la quantità offerta. Non viene accettata la carta prepagata, il bancomat fortunatamente sì. Sinceramente non lo consiglio e non tornerei più.

Siamo stati qui quasi per caso, dovevamo scegliere un posto safe dove mangiare al volo e non avevamo prenotato nulla. Ci accoglie un cameriere (non solo non italiano - che di per sé non sarebbe un problema - ma che palesemente non aveva idea di che cosa proponesse il menù né la differenza tra una pizza e una pasta) che ci fa sedere in un tavolo davanti al bancone da cui ha preso i bicchieri (che dal colore non sembravano pulitissimi). Prendiamo delle pizze e un piatto di pasta, le prime escono NON cotte con un sugo all’aglio e un prosciutto insapore sopra (sembrava di mangiare una suola di una scarpa di gomma); il piatto di pasta invece era rigorosamente scotto con un sugo (anche questo all’aglio) che definire osceno è un eufemismo. Finito di mangiare non abbiamo preso né dolci né caffé (che comunque nessuno ci aveva proposto) perché siamo dovuti fuggire per il fetore di aglio che pervadeva la stanza. A completare questa orrenda cena il conto, a dir poco salato. Non torneremo mai più. Ps. DI ITALIANO NON HA NULLA

Questi si possono spacciare per italiani solo con chi crede che la capitale dell’Italia sia la Francia. Una puzza tremenda di aglio, la pasta è rimasta nel piatto.

Esto fue recomendado por el Hilton Double Tree donde nos alojamos. Lo único bueno aquí fue la ensalada. Me dieron el aperitivo de camarones y aguacate Nunca he visto camarones tan pequeños e insípidos. Los crepes con ricotta y espinacas se cubrieron con una salsa de lectura y apenas había nada allí. Muy poca ricota y apenas espinacas. El vino tinto era plano y el servidor no pudo responder las preguntas básicas sobre los ingredientes. No comí sino un mordisco de ambos platos y me los quité sin preguntar cómo algo andaba mal. Mi amigo consiguió langostinos en espagueti, estaba muy grasiento con 4 langostinos en la cáscara, de frente. Una vez que sacaste la carne de la cola, no había nada que comer. No puedo creer que el hotel sugirió este lugar. Bajamos 65 libras para la cena y terminamos yendo a otro restaurante para cenar. Fue una de las peores cenas que he tenido. Comimos en el restaurante turco de la calle y fue maravilloso.

Bit of a mystery this restaurant. Over the door the sign reads Sophie’s Italian at 79 Southampton Row. I couldn’t see the hygiene rating displayed and decided to check it out after the meal. I could not find a rating for Sophie’s so searched the address. It came back with Denise’s and showed a food hygiene rating from November 2019 of 1....A number of reviewers have mentioned the change of name and also that the management and staff are the same..... Interesting. Our meal was average...not exactly hot and a tiramisu that was swimming in sauce it was almost liquid. Two glasses of wine were almost £18....the equivalent in our hotel was around £10...We did not pay the service charge. Our first visit and definitely our last...

This restaurant was near my hotel. The food was marginal... very fatty and salty, but generally tasteless. The prices were expensive. There are plenty of pubs nearby that have better food and lower prices. Avoid this tourist trap.

Nice cosy restaurant, bit bright. Starter of gamberoni and garlic bread was lovely. Main courses of sea bass and veal valdostana were OK. Sea bass was supposed to be charcoal grilled I thought it had been fried. Veal dish not breaded came with a tomato sauce which wasn't that good and chopped pieces of ham! The young waiter had a cold and was continously sniffing. At one stage a big snot came out of his nose about 10mm long which was sniffed back up... Not a pleasant experience. Oh and one of the Desserts we had chosen wasn't available, so we shared. Oh and be careful the add a 12.5% service charge.. £83 for a mediocre meal, incl £23 drinks.

Out of our 9 days here in London, this was absolutely the worst service. They were completely understaffed for one of the busiest Fridays of the holiday season. It took an hour to get any food at all even though we ordered garlic bread which normally comes out soon. We sat with empty plates and even though the servers walked by, they neither cleared or asked if we needed anything. We had to ask for the bill and once we had it, sat and waited and waited until we took it up to the counter to be paid. The food was mediocre. We were never asked if we wanted dessert or after dinner drinks. We had been to Denise’s prior to this visit and it was much better. What a disappointment!

This restaurant used to be Denise's with an emphasis on French and Mediterranean food. I used to patronize it, not because it was especially noteworthy but because it was an alternative to the preponderance of Italian restaurants in Bloomsbury. I finally gave up on it because the service had become slow, indifferent and bordering on rudeness.

Read great reviews about Sophies Mediterranean restaurant but when I got there it had changed to Italian. First time went was lunch to try it out to take Swiss/German friends who were staying in a nearby hotel to dinner. Food was very good and service was excellent.

We arrived early and had to approach staff as they were busty chatting and were seated right next to another couple although there were other tables, and of course the tables are very close.

I was sorry to see that Denise's - a restaurant that I have patronized on virtually every trip I have taken to London in the past 20+ years - had been sold since my last visit (fall, 2018) and was now Sophie's. Thankfully, the ambiance has remained pretty much unchanged and the menu, while updated to focus more on Italian cuisine and less on the French/Continental that Denise had featured, offered many tasty options! I'll definitely return!!

Pre-booked for party of six, welcome somewhere between underwhelming to non existent and had to approach unsmiling waitress to discover location of table, seemed odd as restaurant only had few patrons. Although time was not an issue for us it was a long wait before the server came to take our order but as we had not all made our choices, we ordered wine and water which was served fairly promptly. After a very long delay our orders were taken. One of our party ordered a vegetarian pizza and made it clear to the server that there must be no dairy products in the recipe, it was served with a cheese base, fortunately none was consumed and eventually the correct pizza was served. Note: if you have any allergies be very wary of visiting this establishment. The pasta dishes served were small in size and at best average quality with the lasagne served in an oven dish with the inside edges black with burnt food, however the diner stated it tasted a bit better than it looked. One of the chef's recommended dishes was Frito Misto, well, if you are happy to use a hammer and chisel to get through the batter on the squid, don't mind small portions and frozen chips, then go for it! The entire experience was most disappointing and needless to say we chose to forgo desserts or coffee.

My friends and I wanted to find a nice quick easy dinner before heading out in town and we came across this Italian restaurant and we looked and the menu and we liked what we saw so we booked. The staff was very welcoming and polite, and the food was outstanding, the presentation of the food was amazing and i can tell you that it definitely fills you up. I would definitely recommend the Mussels, they were cooked perfect and the tomato and white wine sauce was to die for. Definitely recommend it to others for a nice quick meal. Great prices and lovely staff.

Had a very bad experience at the newly named restaurant Sophie’s as it was previously called Denise’s and as a family have been coming to the restaurant for 30 years and how we wish it was back to that now as we had to wait nearly half an hour to be served and even when we was served it was like they was doing us a favour our staters was bland at best and then we had more or less a 45 min wait for our main course which to be honest I could of got a better experience over the road at KFC so I wouldn’t not board my dog here as the new regime are not fit to run a restaurant and looks like they are for a tourist passing trade

Op het eerste zicht ziet het er een leuk restaurant uit. In werkelijkheid is het een totale mislukking gebleken. Er dreef vuil in de glazen. Bij het uitschenken had ik gezien dat de bazin gemerkt had dat er zwarte korreltjes in de frisdrank zaten. Toch werd het ons zo geserveerd. Dat getuigt van een gebrek aan beroepstrots. Het deeg van de pizza was niet lekker en het geheel was erg droog en proefde naar goedkope ingrediënten. De lasagne was walgelijk! Hij was groen, bevatte in plaats van kaassaus een flinterdun laagje kaas en er zat bijna geen tomatensaus in. Op de koop toe was het zuur. Kortom: mijd dit restaurant!

Conocía este restaurante porque aún era Denise's y ¡qué sorpresa descubrir que ahora cambiaron el aspecto y el menú! La mejor noticia es que ahora, además de una interesante selección de platos italianos, ¡también ofrecen pizzas! La oferta de comida es excelente considerando la ubicación central y el personal es siempre amable y sonriente (¡¿quizás muy pocas personas para atender a esta multitud ?!). ¡Recomendado!

Al pasar, sentí curiosidad al ver el restaurante completo durante un día de la semana y entré. Fue una buena elección, la pizza que comí valió la pena y el ambiente del lugar era lo suficientemente acogedor. ¡Pero sobre todo lo que más me sorprendió fue el servicio! ! Sentía un poco de pena en realidad porque con un restaurante completo como ese, solo había dos camareras y el supervisor (¿o el gerente?) Atendiendo y haciendo todo lo posible para prestar atención a todos y hacer felices a todos. Sinceramente, ¡rara vez he visto algo así en esta ciudad! Quiero creer que la escasez de personal fue una excepción del día, de lo contrario, ¡estaré muy preocupado por estas pobres chicas! ! Estamos hablando de servicio de restaurante, no de comida rápida. We were so let down by over-cooked, cold food and some of the worst service in a restaurant I've ever witnessed. If you were known by the waitresses, you were served quickly but as we were not, the service was abysmal. Over 30 minutes to deliver 3 simple desserts in a half-empty restaurant! This was a special occasion for us ruined by truly awful service!

I ordered mussels with vegetables early Saturday evening. Apparently the menu says 12 1/2 % service charge added but you'd need a magnifying glass to find it.

Had a pretty tasteless pizza. Asked for garlic sauce. Got garlic butter, because that was the only thing they had with garlic. They took 12% extra for service that didn't exist. £72 for the four of us. Won't be back.

La decoración definitivamente podría renovarse y los baños parecían estar en el mismo estado de mal estado en el que estaban en mi visita anterior, no es algo que usualmente señale, pero seguramente un par de meses es suficiente tiempo para repararlos. cosas. Went with Bulgarians and found a beautiful, excellent Bulgarian Waitress and excellent food. Particularly the meat, that I had, and the food, that my colleagues had. It was funny to speak half in English, half in Bulgarian with that excellent waitress. The best for her.

As I have been a bit under the weather recently, I thought my Foodie Group should pay another visit to Denise, just in case I'm unable to do another one.

I went there on a Groupon deal. The deal didn’t match up to what we were told it would be and the waitress was really rude so we left. The restaurant hasn’t answered any of my emails either and I’m out of pocket.

Good food, good service,had French entries. Very close to Russell Square. Had veal in cream sauce, friends had fish. All enjoyed.

The restaurant is well located, easy to find, and is in a very touristy area. Maybe that's why they do not have the slightest problem in having a good service, because the food, although very time consuming, 40 minutes, is good!

Mangio “Chicken Chasseur”, pollo alla salsa di pomodoro, bacon e funghi, servito con asparagi e carote lessate. Accompagno il mio piatto con patate cotte e un buon bicchiere di Merlot. This simple little restaurant offered a lot more than appeared on first glance. I asked for a green salad without any dressing. This was very tasty and included tender stem broccoli and olives. The fillet steak I had was also without any sauce and I must say it was the tastiest steak I have had in a long time, very tender too. My husband had prawn and avocado to start and Chicken grand mare which he said was delicious. Drinks were a little expensive but the meals were reasonably priced, especially for the quality. Friendly service, one waitress did have trouble understanding what we wanted, but easily sorted when she asked her colleague for assistance.

Welcoming small French restaurant within walking distance of the many hotels in the Southampton Row area. Bistro style a cut above the usual chains found all over London.It was fairly quite on a mid week night but the menu had a good choice and the food was cooked to order. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The Foodie Group returned on Saturday evening to Denise's. Sadly, our lovely Maitre d' was absent, overseeing their other restaurant in New Oxford St., but Sonia did a great job standng in for him.

This restaurant is situated a few minutes from the British Museum. The menu is varied and I enjoyed both fish and meat meals. Both meals were excellent. Their crepes are lovely for dessert. The portions are just about right for the average adult. I would gladly recommend this restaurant to any visitor to London.

Un típico pequeño restaurante francés sin lujos con solo la comida hablando. La comida era rústica y muy sabrosa. Sí, podríamos haber comido en más restaurantes franceses populares, pero nos alegramos de haber encontrado este pequeño oasis. Altamente recomendado.

I have not been here since August and it was nice to just walk in and be welcomed with a smile from the owner. Lovely food, simple but nice. This restaurant is not going to impress if you are looking for all the posh edges, it just produces a nice menu, great food and is an enjoyable experience. Always a nice price too.

Due to winter illnesses and rapidly looming Xmas, our Foodie Group evening comprised only four of us this time, but that didn't deter us from having a fantastic evening.

Rien de Français dans ce restau hors mis le nom des plats. Malgré les pancartes extérieur assurant un service en Français ou en anglais sans soucis. Nous n'avons eu que de l'anglais par le patron et les serveurs malgré notre difficulté à nous. Faire comprendre. En anglais.

Visited last week and found the service and food faultless and overall great value for money. The waiter was friendly and efficient.

Pas très «français», pas de pain pour des français moyen comme nous, rapport qualité/prix à revoir. Serveur OK mais serveuse froide.

Improved since last visit, approx 18 months ago when it was a bit tired and lacking but it has picked up the game with new owners and is much improved.service could still be improved on but generally quite good and food was much better. Enjoyable experience at a mid range price. No complaints. Thank you!

Sur un séjour de 9 jours à Londres, nous y sommes allés 2 fois. Bon accueil, cuisine raffinée sans prétention et portions généreuses.

Very attractive and accomodating server but the food was as casual as the staffs clothing.

I dont know why i went in but it looked friendly and i was hungry. Really uninteresting set lunch of watered down vegetable soup chicken chasseur. More fool me.
