We really enjoy visiting Den Engel after new owners took over a couple of years ago. There is a wider selection of drinks and the bar has had a wonderful make over which looks fantastic. We particularly enjoy sitting outside during warmer weather. Most of the staff and the manager are very welcoming. We did try to visit one evening after a meal in a local restaurant but were told under 18s are not allowed after 8pm. Fair enough, we didn't realise, but the member of staff was very abrupt when telling us (asking our 14 year old for ID when she could have just said she wasn't allowed in), but maybe she'd just had a bad shift?

Went to den engles on Saturday and it was the usual stuff vastly over priced drinks and a great lack of a smile from the long term bar staff. I have said before I do like the place but not the prices and after a couple of rounds you are spent up. After leaving the pub and the wife added up how much money they make on a bottle of gin that you can buy for £36 and it worked out at £90 Proffit “REALLY”. I think it was the long term owners last night and I wish her well for the future and welcome the new owner,so please review your prices and let’s have some upbeat staff with a bit of go in them. The place could be a top bar with some fresh ideas and if they reopen the restaurant upstairs it would add to the place. So let’s see if the new owner look to the future and peoples pockets, fingers crossed

Clean and tidy place with a good range of bottled and draught beers which are not cheap but that's not unusual for this type of pub. However, and this why I'm confused, the bar staff don't seem to be happy at all. No smile or welcome which would encourage you to stay. Just seems a strange attitude to have in that business which is a shame because it could be really good.

There has been a recent refurbishment which has been long overdue but the owners seem to be clawing the cost of this back through their extortionate prices. I had a half pint of Dark Star at my last visit and it was £2.50 making it £5 a pint. Anywhere else this would be £3.50 for a pint and I pay less than £5 a pint in London. They seem to be taking their customers for idiots by trying to make out beers such as this are rare and hard to get hold of. It seems that they are trying to catch up with other much better establishments by 'trying' to copy their style poorly and with much higher prices. Also the staff are terribly grumpy and I'm not sure why they have decided to go into the Hospitality Industry.

The beer at this bar is great and they offer drinks you won't get elsewhere locally which is their great plus point. What a shame that the same can't be said for the general feel of the place and the bar staff. The couple who own it exude as much warmth in their welcome as an ice cube and the recent redecoration of stark lighting and predominantly grey walls absolutely sums up the total lack of friendliness and ambience. A nice beer in a dentist's waiting room would give you much the same effect! Go for the beer but don't expect anything else.

As the founder of Uttoxeter CAMRA, I recently spent a night in Leek to sample up to 5 of their pubs. Unfortunately, I included the Den Engel. First off I was asked whether I had ever tasted Belgian beers- fair enough as it can be quite strong. I then took my choice and sat down. On checking my phone, I saw that there was a wifi signal. I asked one of the locals whether he knew what the password was and was told that I couldn't have it. I then repeated my question to the bar lady who told me the same. WHAT A DISGRACE!!! None of the other pubs in Leek took that attitude and in deed in the Cock, the bar staff went out of their way to get the password for me. Needless to say, I drank my beer and that was that. I will never go back to sample any more of their beers or to use their precious WIFI!!!!!

Introduced oneself having reserved a table earlier that day and was invited to look at the menu either in the bar downstairs or go direct to the eating area above. The dining area was virtually empty, somewhat surprisingly for a warm late summer evening and was given the choice to sit anywhere. First impressions weren't great, it lacked atmosphere, walls were a little grubby and the menu was lacking in imagination and choice. We struggled to decide given the lack of choices, but decided on the lamb with a Belgian slant on bubble and squeak and a sirloin steak with a volcano sauce. Our meals were presented in a fairly nice way in a relatively acceptable space of time, the lamb was cooked to my partners liking and all seemed to be ok on that side of the table, my steak was cooked to my liking also, shame about the quality of it though, tough and flavourless.A pleasant enough waitress who took our order asked midway through our meal if everything was ok, I felt there was little point in commenting on my steak, we simply smiled, said it was ok and decided to eat up and leave with the minimum of fuss.Declined the offer to order a dessert, the choices again were limited and unimaginative, quietly paid and left the customary 10% tip, descended the stairs and vowed not to return again.Average, in fact very very average, in fact very disappointing..

Just OK if you like European Lagers you'll love it. But lacks atmosphere and prices are somewhat expensive.

We are regular customers and think that the quality of food served here is brilliant when they do evening special events, and now that food is available most evenings we have tried a few times. Wednesday at the moment is two pies for £10. But this isn't your usual, there was a choice of 4 types, suet pudding with steak and onion, or with steak and kidney, and a more tradional shortcrust pie with Chicken and leek or steak and ale, really really nice the two that we chose. Served with chips and peas very good value.Even better value is the two dine for £15 with a bottle of wine that is currently on a Thursday night which we have also tried, the fish and chips is possibly the best in the leek area, and very good value. The beer is quite expensive, however if you want to try some of Belgium's finest offerings and such a range that has even made one chap travelling from Brussels that happened past one evening, blush with its variety, then it's worth the little extra, as besides the choice, it is always without doubt on form. Nowhere else in ou area will have a lit cellar that you can go and look into if you want to (on the way downstairs to the washrrom facilities) which is always immaculate.I'd recommend this place for a meal and a drink anytime.

Best bar in Leek by a country mile - slightly pricey - but you want quality you have to pay for it

If you like continental lagers and ciders then this place has to be mecca. There is a countless selection of bottled and draught beers and the place seemed very poular. There is a restaurant upstairs, but didn't use this. Premium beers commanding premium prices.

Have not eaten here, but beer choice very good, but a couple of the bar staff could use a bit more knowledge to advise people on all those beers

A charming and cozy little pub that feels refreshingly different from the typical Greene King franchise. The bar staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, engaging in delightful conversation that added a personal touch to our visit. The food was excellent – we tried the sharing platters and were pleasantly surprised by the generous portions and great value. The pub’s Christmas decorations were beautifully done, creating a warm and festive atmosphere that made our experience even more enjoyable. This is easily one of the best Greene King locations we’ve visited locally, and we’ll definitely be returning!

Disappointing experience in our visit today. Ate at Ego with my partner, my son and his girlfriend. We are local so eat here quite often. My partner ordered Lamb Kleftiko, which is a dish served in a terracotta dish, wrapped in brown paper. It arrived extremely hot, far too hot to eat or do anything with. The food was difficult to eat as it was surrounded by the brown paper. The vegetables were very scarce and we felt it was poor value at £21.95. In hindsight we should have sent the dish back as it wasn't really worth the money. We did complain to two members of staff, one who was pretty indifferent and half heartedly asked if my partner wanted to order something else and again to a gentleman who told us that they have no control over the menu and that it's down to head office who design the menu. We like Ego but will think carefully before visiting again as I value for money isn't what we got today.

Really nice takeaway. We had beef curry, chicken with ginger and spring onion, crispy shredded beef and chicken satay. Free prawn crackers. All gorgeous and not swamped in sauce. Delivery man was lovely too.
