Thought we’d give Dean’s a go again as hadn’t been for a long time. There were reasons for that and I’m afraid it’s still the same. Sullen staff, long wait for just soup and sandwiches and quality of food not great. Cullen Skink way too salty and tasted manufactured. Juice was warm from their fridge. Wish we hadn’t gone and won’t return. Waste of money.

My wife and myself had a 2 course meal on Sunday 6th Oct. We both had Cullen Skink, a soup of smoked haddock, potatoes, onions and cream. The best ever and a substantial bowl of soup. Delicious . Then chicken goujons, wedges ,coleslaw and salad. Delicious. The staff were excellent and the ambience lovely. We'll deserved 5 star rating.

Well slow service at queue. We received our order bit couple behind us in the queue got their food first. Mince and tatties good value but salty. A baguette at nearly £10! This is not Kellock bank on busy road but restaurant in Huntly, felt ripped off for a sarnie. There appeared to be plenty staff but think there must be a lack in the kitchen as was slow. Not sure will be back anytime soon. Shame

This establishment gave me the impression of being far from Welcoming - there are an abundance of "Industrial" style WARNING signs, throught shop and dining area. Multiple; coloured, plastercised signs, in many languages and large, bold typeface, forbiding the taking of photos, warnings about balcony hand rails and other hazards. It is a safety officer / Health & Safety department running riot and spoils the ambience, and experience of what in fact is a nice gift shop and tea room. The establishment claims to be "dog friendly", I'm glad our dog can't read, as it seemed to me to be far from it - it lets dogs in, apparently under sufferance. There are an abundance of dog information and warning signs - each a typed complete A 4 page of bullet points, comments and instructions. The tea room is over two floors, dogs and owners are limited to a back room / viewing corridor, on the first floor. Having read the warnings that dogs are not allowed on the shopfloor, owners must choose a route around side of sales items and up a flight of stairs, to the "back room", and wait in isolation to be found by a member of staff. There were no water bowls, inside, nor outside the premises. The foregoing is a pity as it detracts from good food, and nice staff. As to the village; it is a shade shabby, and pretty much dead. Not worth turning off A96 for. Best advice is to drive slightly further, to Keith

The cafe is not clean. The chairs and floor had food all over them. We ordered kids sandwhiches and two paninis. Food took a long time to arrive, kids sandwhiches had no butter and the cheese panini had very little cheese in it. Chicken panini did not taste fresh. No napkins at the cutlery station and none given when food arrived. Toilets absolutely disgusting, paper all over the floor and one toilet with liquid all over the floor.

We’ve stopped a Dean’s before privately and on coach trips and up to recently this has been a pleasurable experience. This time was different. My wife joined 10 back from 30 odd queuing from our coach and ordered a fine piece for me (nice) and a ‘toasted’ tea cake for herself and got a numbered plaque for the latter. Sometime later all the plaques were gone in the restaurant except hers. She went up to ask where her ‘toasted’ tea cake was; “Oh someone else must have got it” was the reply with “I’ll get you another”. More people came in, got plaques, got served and their plaques taken away. Then her “toasted” tea cake arrived. To us it looked burnt (see photos and see what you think), so she told a waitress close by, “Oh it must be slightly over you mean”, “No it’s burnt” my wife said. “We can get you another”, “that’s not OK our coach is leaving soon” she said. She ate around the “slightly over” part and left the rest. Beware asking for a “toasted” tea cake if you go there in future, because we won’t be.

I arranged an afternoon tea for 17 of my lovely friends. The food was plentiful, beautifully presented and tasted amazing. They provided dairy free platters for some of my party and there was a good variety. The staff who arranged the booking and served us were very friendly, helpful and kept our tea/coffee cups topped up. They even provided boxes for us to take some goodies left, home with us. Would definitely book again and recommend to anyone.

Visited with my inlaws for a pre booked afternoon tea. The service was faultless even though they were really busy, Leanne was the person we saw most, but other staff spoke to us when she was busy and they were all fantastic, we really felt everyone cared. I'd pre informed them about an allergy, and they were totally on the ball, taking care to avoid using the food that causes the issue. The food was fresh and delicious, all the sweet treats, scones and pancakes were homemade, and there was a generous pot of whipped double cream with lovely wee jars of jam. The sticky toffee pudding cake was on another level of good, and there was a lovely selection of sandwiches. The coffee and tea was perfect, and we were all given a second cup at time that suited us, such a lovely touch. We enjoyed buying a few treats in the shop before we left.

I have been going to Dean's for years, and have always liked the cafe. However, I feel it is going rapidly downhill. We went here for lunch with friends and had to wait close to an hour after we had ordered food, and even then they got one order wrong. Also, you don't get a bit of shortbread with the coffee anymore. On the plus side, they reasonable vegetarian and vegan options.

The upstairs seating has largely been replaced with more retail space. There are other options in Huntly for meals, snacks, coffees etc but Deans need to up their game if they want to maintain market share.

My husband and I had Afternoon Tea at Dean's of Huntly, famous makers of Scotland's delicious shortbread. We booked in advance and the lady who took the booking had a very cheery, friendly voice on the phone. On arriving at Dean's we entered through their gift shop, which along with their food products, sold a lovely selection of ladieswear, accessories, gifts and toys. There was also a viewing window to watch how the shortbread mixing processes were carried out. When we mentioned to the shop assistant that we were having Afternoon Tea she immediately introduced us to Sandra, the restaurant supervisor, who was extremely, welcoming and efficient. Then she led us upstairs and into a lovely area of comfortable dining booths which overlooked the packing department of the business where, through glass windows, you could see the employees busy at their work. The "tea" was then brought to us on a three-tiered cake stand and included a wonderous display of food all of which were fresh, attractive and tasty. We were served copious amounts of tea nad coffee and in the end, having eaten all we could, she offered us a box to take the remaining things on the plates, home with us. Which we accepted as they were too good to go to waste. On leaving, we had time to browse the additional shopping departments upstairs. There was kitchen and cookery ware, jewellery, gifts as well as more ladies fashion and accessories. All the staff seemed very efficient and enjoying their work. We would recommend Dean's to anyone visiting the area and they also serve breakfasts and lunches and have a separate coffee shop and ample parking.

I have been a customer for many years and am sad to say our visit was really disappointing. The place has changed a lot , and not in a good way . The upstairs seating area has been changed into a gift shop. , reducing the size of the restaurant by at least half capacity. The tables downstairs are all cramped together in a really awkward way . The menu used to be good home cooked food - macaroni, stovies , steak pie , fish etc - nothing like this on the menu anymore . New menu - sandwiches, panini, baked tatties. We had the Cullen skink - watery and the tatties still had skins on and were cut into big chunks . Baked tattie with chilli and cheese - was meant to have sour cream but that was missing from the plate . £9.99 is a bit steep price wise for a baked tattie compared to other local places . Sadly the restaurant has lost its charm of being local old fashioned home cooking. The gift shop down stairs is really dark too . As a customer/ visitor to the area if you are looking for a varied menu with great home cooked food head down to Kellockbank near Insch . It seems that Deans are trying to create the gift shop / eating experience of Kellockbank and Morgan Mcveighs but sadly the food, service and atmosphere doesn’t hit the mark . Such a shame as this was a brilliant place to eat pre Covid . I hope it can return to this standard again .

Deans used to be an excellent place for a local lunch with friends/family. I have lived here for over 30 years and always enjoyed the lovely varied menu, friendly staff and homebakes however since reopening after covid with a scaled down menu I can only say its a huge disappointment. Huntly has very few venues that offer a decent lunch menu and so having been disappointed the 1st time i visited i thought i would try a second time ...all it achieved was confirmation that it was awful AGAIN!!! So sad that huntly has been let down so badly. I spoke to the manageress of the cafe, who was polite and friendly. I explained it wasn't her fault but felt that I needed to provide feedback in the hope that someone may take note and bring back a once lovely place....I was told that the deep fat fryers had been removed due to the cost of cooking oil and therefore the menu reduced...I explained that perhaps people would be happy to pay a little more if the food was of a better standard and encouraged her to pay a visit to other restaurants in the local area who provide a much varied menu at competitive prices, these establishments are well supported and a pleasure to visit. On my way out I overheard another customer complaining about the standard of food, stating it was inedible...not just me then!! Please do something to save a sinking ship!!

As happens so often in Scotland, understaffing and inadequate supervision, reduce the quality of experience for the customer.Realistically being the only place in Huntly providing restaurant type facilities, it was very busy on the Sunday we arrived. Staff we clearly less than happy - trying to provide a good service with insufficient resources to meet demand. Many tables were covered with the debris from previous customers, and the dreadful London style hiphop music through the sound system was bizarrely out of place. Soup and sandwiches were however, well presented and served in good time.

My only negative recently has been the children of other visitors being allowed to make so much noise & run about without either parents or staff asking them to stay sitting at the table or to quieten down. It spoils it for others and it really isn't a creche or playground. Maybe a notice in an obvious place or a discreet word to the parents might help as not everyone is there to listen the yelling.

Also glad you could get more than one cuppa out of the tea-pot, & coffee reportedly delicious - both delivered with a welcome shortie biscuit. We stopped in past to buy some shortbread, which we've done many times, but this time we decided to have a snack as it was lunchtime. There are plenty car parking spaces, especially as there is a new building which also belongs to Deans but not open at the time of our visit.

The food is amazing and although it gets busy they always are very nice and (almost) always gets your order right I know that there’s a seating area upstairs where you can watch workers make shortbread but my only question is... how many days do they work? lol

Visited on our way to Aberdeen for lunch. Stopped once before and remember being very impressed, so this time took the family. Very filling deliciously cooked meal. I had the macaroni, husband had chicken burger and daughter had kids fish. Clean plates all round! Very reasonably priced and lovely clean place. Staff very friendly too. Cannot recommend enough! Will be back! Thanks again!

Have been here twice in the last 3 weeks for breakfast whilst in Huntly. Scottish Breakfast is lovely. Freshly cooked. You order at the counter, take a seat and it is brought over when ready. Faultless service and the staff are always very polite.

Well what can I say, apart from the Scottish breakfast was about as Scottish as Barbra Windsor! no Potato cake no Lorne/flat sausage not even a wee haggis! To say there’s no table service and you have to que up like your collecting a school dinner is Absolutely shocking especially to say it costs £10...

This place needs to remember it’s only a cafe.. I’d love to know how the management justify the rip off prices it charges.. just shy of £30 for a 2 coffees, 4 little cakes and 1 macaroni..

Went here with a family gathering. By the looks and demeanour of the staff we thought there was a wake going on. Had afternoon tea and the scone was served with squirty cream from a can?! Shame on you Deans!

How can a place like Deans serve cold chips on a plate? I asked for, and received, a refund. So that is it.

Visited this place again for the second time on our way to Elgin. This place has a delightful café with lovely cakes and snacks to choose from. There is also a good selection of hot dishes available. There is also a shop where you can purchase the biscuits that are produced in the factory.

Went here for the first time since my last review which was graded a 1. The only change here since my last visit over 2 years ago is massive overpricing!!

My family and I stopped in after visiting Huntly Castle. We had ice cream, a scone, and coffee. Everything was really good. They have a nice gift ship, as well.

We usually go for breakfast here but since our last visit a few weeks ago to our latest visit the menus have changed and the standard has dropped, the full breakfast consisted then of 9 items incl toast and coffee £7:95, it now costs £8:00 for six items no coffee, backward step I think and will not be going back any time soon.

My husband and youngest son went for the burger and chips and were impressed by the potion size and quality. My elder son had the pulled pork and burger with chips and was unable to finish it.I though I had selected a small meal, but when it arrived I was surprised by the size of the bake potato (it was huge) and the amount of coronation chicken.

I was a bit disappointed with lunch. The portions are appropriate for ealderly or children but on the small side for a middle aged adult. Soup is served in a half full tea cup sixed soup bowl and the main course was equally disappointing. I had the Downies Smoked Haddock. It was a small fish served with three baby potatoes and a single poached egg peas and carrots. At £4.50 for the soup and £9 for the main I must admit I expected a proper soup bowl and a bigger fish more potatoes and two poached eggs. I'm still hungry. I think I'll visit the local supermarket and pick up a sandwich. The only saving grace was the food tasted good.

The chippy is just up the road from us but we probably only pop in to get chips once a month to go with a meal we are making. The chips are always good these days, as is the service and the staff are really helpful. On more than one occasion I’ve seen them going above and beyond to help out a member of the public. Also really pleased to see the phasing-out of polystyrene trays and plastic bags in favour of paper and cardboard over the last few years. Fish could always be bigger but you could say that about any chippy these days and the last few fish I’ve had have been really good. Highly recommended.

Good things : This cafe is in a great location and offers plenty of seating outside which is ideal for those with dogs. Not so good things : The coffee was ok although pricey for the size of cup. Cakes were nice enough, but had too much buttercream icing. Bad things : The layout of the tables inside is a bit congested. The volume and choice of music appears to be for the benefit of the staff because we, and those around us at other tables, to raise our voices to have a conversation.

Disappointed with the cappuccino which was weak milky coffee which I did not finish. Lovely lady who served and made my cappuccino but she was no barista. Been here many times before but this is definitely my last cappuccino.

Been here twice on our break to Deeside. Staff really friendly and helpful. We had coffee and tea on our first visit with a slice of cracknel. Tea, Toasties and cracknel! (again) again on our second visit. Although we only had snacks which were very reasonably priced the food being delivered to other tables looked first class.
