Very disappointing. I went to the counter to view the cakes and the two staff didn’t bother breaking away from their conversation to acknowledge me. Returned to the table to discuss the menu/options and was approached by a guy who explained about ordering and paying at the counter. We ordered one carrot and parsnip soup, two teas and a sticky ginger cake. Frankly the soup was awful! So little liquid I’m not sure how they can call it a soup. Chunks of under cooked carrot and parsnip with a large dollop of pesto on top just doesn’t cut it! I’m a Yorkshire lass who loves a good cuppa - but the tea was so strong it was bitter. The tea for two gives you two cups and not a drop more! The saving grace was the excellent ginger cake.

No wonder they have been awarded a place in The Good Food Guide as the food is superb. I had the salad plate which had every wonderful vegetable you can think of dressed with hummus, salsa verde and roast squash. The dhal is another favourite along with Spanish tomatoes on sourdough. Cakes are different every time - plum crumble muffins and basque cheesecake to name a couple being my favourites. Good, friendly service and a stylish setting.

This place served me the most incredible salad I have ever had. You would never have thought of putting these ingredients together and I don’t think I have ever had such a wonderful experience with quality produce, colour and taste, We learnt that every meal is made from scratch with the most exciting ingredients and the puddings and little sides and additions they sell are a wonderful surprise. The tea was served loose leafed and in beautiful pots. The childrens hot chocolates were the perfect temperature for their little hands. We didn’t have any dietary needs but the staff were allergy conscious and I saw the head chef speak to someone about their complex needs which was reassuring if you have a worry. I also noted the environment is safe and accessible for more vulnerable visitors and the area is spacious with ground floor toilets for anyone with mobility needs. The customer service was perfect and attentive and I am not surprised that these guys have just been listed in the Good Food Guide. The museum across the path does a tour and the kids loved learning how to make the knives and forks as well as looking at all the other things on display. We will definitely be recommending and can’t wait to visit again to try the other dishes on the menu. Thankyou so much for a brilliant afternoon.

The best Reuben I have ever tasted. Toasted Sourdough with tasty side salad, Derbyshire roast beef, mature cheddar, kimchi, russian sauce. It had everything a sandwich should have, sweet, sour, crunchy, soft, the sauce dripping down fingers that had to be licked clean time and again, layer upon layer of flavour, each mouthful, a savouring of taste and texture and moments of time. A truly wonderful experience. For the best Reuben you have to make a visit. For desert cake, mango, lime, and coconut, with cream AND raspberry sorbet. Lovely staff, no delay with the food. As always we will be back.

We’ve eaten here a handful of times before and live locally so know it well. The last visit was just for tea & cake late last year sometime. I brought my parents along this time, they were treating us to lunch (4 adults, one teen). We ordered 5 sandwiches, 2 coffees, 2 teas and 1 OJ. The total … £75! Absolutely horrified at the price and so embarrassed that I had suggested the venue to my parents. I didn’t see the prices when we ordered as I had forgotten my glasses (so my husband read the menu to me!!). If I had I would have insisted we go elsewhere (plenty of other options nearby). The food was good but in no way justified the price, whatever the provenance of the food etc. We are lucky to be able to eat out a lot and have noticed increased prices everywhere but this was way above any rises we have seen elsewhere. We won’t be back. It feels like they are taking the mickey out of customers and I see from other reviews we are not alone in this.

The cafe is clean with a decent choice of things to eat. We only needed drinks and the staff were helpful. When the young waitress brought the drinks over she accidentally dropped the small jug of milk and it went on my husbands trousers and coat. She immediately apologised and brought him cloths to clean himself up. We laughed about it and it wasnt a problem. A while later another lady came to us offering apologies and handed us an envelope. Having read some mixed reviews on this place we decided to take a punt and try it out. I have to say that all of us were extremely happy with the food and drinks that was served to us. The only negative I can say is that we seemed to be overlooked and it took us a while to get the attention of someone to take our food order, which as we were sat next to the till point seemed slightly annoying. However we all had a great time, the internals of the building are great to look at, and makes a good and different setting for a spot of lunch. We will be back.

My wife and I called in today for an early coffee - our visit turned out to be much more. It's diffcult to find the words to describe the complex. The cafe is linked to a shop, a museum and a working factory (which didn't look like a factory and had won an architectural award) - all in memory of David Mellor. We confess our ignorance as we had not heard of him. He is apparently one of the best-known designers in Britain, specialising in metalwork and especially cutlery. We had a lovely coffee and delicious piece of cake in a very comfortable cafe. The staff were very helpful and friendly and everywhere was spotlessly clean. The grounds were relaxing and very well maintained with plenty of car parking space.Either side of our coffee we looked round the shop and the musuem which gave us a fascinating insight into David Mellor's work. There are excellent displays which are well explained without going over the top. It was so interesting to see so many every day things that David Mellor had designed - these ranged from traffic lights, street lamps, letter boxes and benches to a wide range of domestic products including cutlery.I'm sure we will make a return visit. Thanks again for looking after us so well even though our stay was brief - it made an excellent start to our walk along the river valley to Calver and back.

The food was maybe a little too pretentious ( there were no plain sandwiches !) and a tiny bit too expensive ( one slice of gf cake £4.50 !!) but the cafe itself was clean , airy and the staff were plentiful and all very friendly and efficient . It's a definite destination place but worth it as a treat and looking round the accompanying museum and shop is interesting. What let this place down was the toilets ! There was just one male and one female toilet and at one point there were five women waiting in a snaking queue down the cafe to use the toilet . The car park and seating is geared up for coach parties so I expected better then this . Once in the toilet I could see all the design work had gone into the cafeteria and not in there ! Skirting board was coming off , there was rubbish round the cistern area and the dryer didn't work . My Dad told me that in the men's toilet not even the automatic tap worked . A real shame to an otherwise stylish building.

I've been here a few times with different friends and relatives who have suggested it because they like it. Each time I go along thinking the food might have improved, but its got steadily worse. This last time I think has been the worst, with fibrous Celeriac and Apple soup which quite frankly just got stuck in my teeth and tasted of nothing. Then a scone (the scones used to be OK) not any more! They were dry, heavy and tasted of cheap vanilla flavouring.... Vanilla just doesn't taste right in a scone!! I left my mine after a mouthful and brought it to the attention of the very pleasant waiter. There is a limited menu, not a problem because it is what it is , a small cafe. My wife had quiche that came with a very nice looking mixed salad. I chose the mushroom soup and focaccia bread. The soup did not resemble mushrooms with the exception of the odd whole button mushroom put into the soup at some time, the overwhelming taste was that of celery. I make my own version of mushroom soup and there is no celery in it, only onion, sliced mushrooms, stock and a little cream. When it is served it actually looks and tastes like mushroom soup.

The staff were lovely; helpful and friendly but not overly so. The food was overpriced and disappointing. My husband had a sandwich on ciabatta; the bread was dry and the filling lacklustre. I ordered the quiche, expecting a nice big chunk, but it was a very small individual thing. I'd be very surprised if it measured 10 cm across! And it was tasteless. The meal was bulked out with salad and far too many potatoes. These were nice but obviously the cheapest ingredient. For £9.50 I expected a better balanced plate. My husband's cappuccino was also tiny and disproportionate to the cost of £2.75. Surroundings were very nice and the place was clean, however we wouldn't eat there again.

Our food was average, no butter on the dry sandwich and the cake poor, but really my main concern was how uncomfortable I felt watching the staff. While they all were delicious, my husband found a long hair stuck in the icing of one of the cakes. He called the waitress. She apologized and mentioned that they bring the cakes in (like they're not responsible) She didn't offer to change the cake. At the time of paying, no one mentioned anything and we paid the full price. Had this happened anywhere with the least amount of standard, they would have cross that item off the bill. A very pleasant atmosphere. The person making coffee seemed to know what he was doing, so we ordered coffee. Unfortunately what was supposed to be a cafe latte turned out to be a mug of very hot milk with one shot of coffee in it. It quickly developed a skin. "Was everything ok?" Well, I explained, it was a cup of hot milky coffee. "That’s what a latte is" was the response. I suggested the milk should be foamed. "I didn’t make that one, it was the other lady" was the response. "Sometimes when you go to costa, it isn’t very good" she went on. Hardly the point. "That’s £8 please". I paid. And having planned to go into the store to buy a few kitchen items, I left. Training in making coffee would have been good. You just can’t use an espresso machine without it. Training in customer service even more important. At this price point, both really need to be better.

You must stop and shop then have either tea and a cake or a good lunch. It’s different but good food

A most interesting place and a very friendly team and great service. The building is fascinating as are all the design items in show. The coffee was excellent and will definitely return.

Lovely coffee and location. Very limited menu to soup and cold sandwiches. None of which were inspiring. Expensive also. Food was tasty and well presented. Place was not busy at all however car park was full. Service was a bit hit and miss.

My husband and I visited this cafe recently and were looking forward to some nice food and hospitality. The hospitality was there but the food and the PRICES were terrible. The menu was limited, the soup was awful and £7.95 for two slices of bread with a piece of ham in the middle was extortionate . There was salad but this was just carrot with poppy seeds, lettue and some halved cherry tomatoes. I will say that the staff were great and very cheerful. I won't be visiting again !! What a rip off

Interesting cafe in this design museum and factory with adjacent excellent kitchen shop. Accompanied by traffic lights and a Porche waitress service provides a ranges of relativley expensive light bites, sandwiches and cakes. I had an excellent cheddar and pickle sandwich, pale ale and Americano. Slight negatives include no free wifi, a long stretch of tables and a mix up with our order including the wrong food and no knives and forks (possibly new staff so forgiven). Generally very good, liked the shop, slightly expensive.

Friends invited us to join them for lunch as they had eaten in the cafe in the summer and enjoyed the meal. We had only ever had coffee there previously.

Well I love this place. Our lovely Belgian customers wanted to walk in the Peak District, starting at Hathersage station we walked over Eyam Moor and ended back at the cafe. Authentic Bakewell Pudding and good coffee pleased our guests. Getting served took a while and the prices are high, but it was much appreciated.

This was only a coffee stop after visiting the David Mellor Shop but the coffee was great, the service quick and polite and of course being surrounded by such iconic design it must be one of the most interesting coffee stops anywhere.

A very interesting group of buildings, a very good shop and the cafe manages to be high quality but certainly the morning we went there delightfully run. Staff all seem confident and enthusiastic about where they work. The menu is open to a degree of flexibility, ask nicely and they keep the customer very happy!

We were a very large group (20) who had been walking and turned up to see if we could grab a sandwich lunch. There was enough seating outside so we began to sit down, only to be confronted by one of the waitresses who told us we should have booked and that the kitchen would struggle with our order. We tried to explain that we would have done if we'd had planned our lunch stop, we even asked if she would rather we left, but she said no, we could stay but then unfortunately kept coming back to us to tell us we should have booked and even put a slip in each bill to say you need to book with parties of 6 or more. If there hadn't been enough tables, we'd have moved on. Anyway, her worries about the kitchen coping were unfounded. Food was prompt and the sandwiches were filling which was just what we needed after our walk. The other staff were helpful. Maybe just got her on a bad day.

Beautifully decorated with blazing log fires and a welcome to match, this pub is probably the best in the area. Great menu at realistic prices and unsurpassed quality and presentation - what’s not to like. We could not fault anything - thanks to all the staff for a wonderful evening.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!

Superb Al fresco breakfast in a lovely courtyard right in the heart of this ancient historic village. Quality of ingredients was superb, the tea was delicious and the environment was delightful. I would heartily recommend
