Ordered butter chicken and aloo gobi. Put both on the plate took a mouthful. Was so hot my tongue started to tingle. Moved the butter chicken to one side to eat the aloo. Took another mouthful and my mouth was in agony, even the following day it was still sore. Eat all the yougat my wife had and it did nothing. When I told them all they said was that it has chilli powder, and laughed No mention on the menu, it was hot or had chilli powder. Could not taste anything after that. Worst curry I have ever had. Wasted £80. Never going back

Gaurav was an amazing host and very kind with my son who was interested in trying some hot chilli! Food was very well prepared and well spiced. Coming from Switzerland we don’t get spicy food often and it was a pleasure to eat here with my family.

Kamal isn’t just the host—you can’t even really call him that (he gave me some free shots). He’s honestly one of the best people you’ll ever meet. The food, obviously, is incredible—probably the best you’ll find outside of London, and honestly, even better than anywhere I’ve been in London. But it’s more than just the food. You feel completely at home here, like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. And somehow, all of this comes at a very reasonable cost. Nothing could be better.

I recently dined at Dastaan, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. To start, the service was incredibly slow. We waited over 30 minutes just to place our order, and it took even longer for our food to arrive. When the dishes finally came, they were lukewarm and lacked the vibrant flavors I’ve come to expect from Indian cuisine. The butter chicken was more like a bland stew, and the naan was overcooked, making it tough to chew. Additionally, the restaurant was quite noisy and felt cramped, making it difficult to enjoy our meal. To top it off, the staff didn’t seem particularly attentive or friendly, which added to the overall negative experience. I had high hopes for Dastaan but I left feeling underwhelmed and unlikely to return. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for authentic Indian flavors or a pleasant dining atmosphere.

I don't know much about Indian cuisine and to be honest this was my first experience with such authentic dishes, but I'm just delighted! You have 2 hours to visit. The dishes are quite spicy, so if you don't like or don't have experience eating very spicy dishes, it's better to tell the staff about it so they can recommend something more or less spicy. The atmosphere is incredible, the service is at the highest level.

The food here was amazing the last time we visited. I’m not sure that serving a curry that is simply hot with chilli and lacking any layers of spice is something to get excited about. Methi chicken had no flavour of fenugreek. The pani puri were so disgusting, tough chewy with one chickpea and bore no resemblance to the puri we ate before. Not sure what’s happened here and maybe the bib gourmand has swayed the effort. We did email Dastaan to relay our disappointment and left two main courses virtually untouched. The waiter didn’t appear bothered or even ask why? Nor did anyone respond to the email. We won’t be going back and definitely wouldn’t recommend , reading through many reviews, they don’t respond to complaints.

The food is always amazing. They care so much about serving everything at top quality. Last time we were there one of the party left a dish for a few minutes while enjoying another. The waiter offered to take the untouched dish away and freshen it up to ensure it was as delicious as possible. Amazing value for food as good as this. Also if you are dining with vegetarians or vegans, there is plenty of choice.

UPDATE - please do not accept online orders if you cannot fulfil in the time frame. I waited 90 minutes before having to go collect myself. Why give an ETA of 20-30 minutes!? Ordered for home delivery. Wow! We ordered after seeing several recommendations from locals, not really knowing what to expect as the menu doesn’t extensively describe the ingredients or heat level. I don’t usually eat spicy curries and ordered the methi chicken. Whilst it was unexpectedly quite spicy, it was so flavoursome and delicious! Will definitely be ordering again and trying some of the other dishes

Great food only problem is being rushed and don’t even wear something vaguely nice as whole place full off puffa jackets and backwards baseball caps and kids picking their noses , staff are friendly but always feel as if we are being rushed have to slow them down . Has got very expensive but still lovely food .

A deceptively low key location but boy what a change as you walk into the restaurant. A warm welcome from the the team. A short menu which is a massive tick for me when it comes to Indian food. The menu is faultless. Delicious pani puri, fish tikka, amiritsari fish and pepper prawns. As for the lamb chop, wow! As is usual we’ve overdone the starters but cannot help launching into the mains knowing the takeaway beckons. We still to the tried and tested - Dahl, Channa, rogham josh, rice, roti and naans. All beautifully made. Even though the drive is c 25 min it remains our go-to Indian takeaway when I’m not cooking myself.

Disappointed. Had high hopes based on the Michelin recommendation. There was a general lack of precision in what each dish conveyed due to confused spicing. Lamb chops were ruined by the use of raw mustard oil as a dressing. The portions were a tad small. Service was attentive. The atmosphere was lively.

Dastan - A Michelin Star Restaurant in Epsom: Disappointing Experience on a Special Night Having visited Dastan twice before, we were excited to return for a special celebration. We were thrilled to be celebrating my sister’s success in securing an amazing posting in the United States, and I thought Dastan would be the perfect place to mark the occasion, especially since our past experiences had been exceptional. On our previous visits, we were always warmly welcomed, and the service, especially from Gaurav, was exemplary. So, with that in mind, I made a reservation, expecting the same wonderful atmosphere. However, this time, our experience took a disappointing turn. Upon arrival, we noticed the restaurant was full, which we understood, but things quickly began to go awry. We were attended by a staff member named Kamal, who led us to a corner table right in front of the kitchen. As we approached, I was shocked to realize that the table was used as a service station – it was cluttered with cutlery, starter baskets, and popadums. It was far from the type of table I would expect in a Michelin-starred restaurant, particularly for a celebration. When I questioned Kamal about the situation, I was taken aback by his response. What started as a polite inquiry was met with defensiveness. He seemed offended that I was concerned about the table he had offered us. I tried to explain that, as the general manager for Hilton Hotels, I come from the same hospitality industry where guests are treated with the utmost respect and care. I expected more from a Michelin-starred establishment in terms of ambiance, service, and the overall dining experience. I was not expecting to be seated at a service table right in front of the kitchen. Kamal’s attitude was disappointing, and I felt that my concerns were not taken seriously. To be honest, this experience made me reflect on the importance of not judging a restaurant by its Michelin star alone. If this was the standard of service at Dastan, it certainly fell short of what I expect. That said, I would like to acknowledge Gaurav for his continued professionalism and efforts to make things right. Gaurav's service was outstanding, as always, and I truly appreciate the attempts he made to rectify the situation. Kudos to him for trying his best in a difficult situation. In conclusion, while Dastan's food remains excellent, the service and overall atmosphere on this particular visit left a lot to be desired. I would strongly recommend that the restaurant take a closer look at how they treat their guests, especially those celebrating special occasions. Service and ambiance are just as important as the food when it comes to creating a memorable dining experience. I hope this review serves as constructive feedback for improvement.

Reserved a table for Saturday afternoon to have lunch with friends. The staff were very attentive and always happy to suggest dishes, also very accommodating for young diners. Can't ever fault having food at Dastaan, it remains my favourite south asian restaurant in the area! Thank you again

Probably the best Indian food I have had in London, also exceeding Michelin-starred experiences. Cozy ambience but a bit too quiet for me, but great food. Chicken Lollipops are insane! I'd definitely recommend to go if you want top tier Indian restaurant.

Dinner was amazing. The atmosphere, even being 8pm mid week was welcoming, a very popular place. All the dishes were delicious with the flavours beautifully balanced. Menu included mainly dishes you wouldn't necessarily find in other UK curry restaurants. Presentation was outstanding.

I visited on my own and was not made to feel like I had two heads. Service was superb and food was amazing. I have to agree with previous post - it can be a bit spicey. I recommend the saag gosht!

Great food and excellent service. This is what one calls 'authentic Indian menu'. Just enough choice but each dish is prepared to a high standard. Leave some space for the afters - their pistachio kulfi is to die for! Portions are good for the mains. To add, their cocktail range is exciting and unique. Parking is easily available on the side road (with no restriction) so worth travelling even if not local to you.

I can’t speak to whether this is authentic or not. I can say, it is awesome. The menu on offer here is unique - you won’t find these items anywhere else. I’m lucky enough that this is practically my local curry house. I’ve been multiple times, and we use it for special occasions. Phenomenal food, friendly waiters, and with the White Rhino range of beers offer a touch more than your standard “curry house beers”.

A friend who is a foodie and long time connoisseur of the dining scene of London did bring me here as he was curious to get the opinion of the foodie that I am about Daastan. Well, Dastaan is already widely known as one of the very best Indian restaurants, right now, in London and I totally agree with that. In my short stay in London, we went back twice. Next time I will come back to London, I'll make sure to go there 2,3 times (and that is coming from someone who rarely visits the same restaurant more than once). Amazing authentic Indian flavours (we tried the Bhajias, Dahi Puri Chaat, Malai Chicken Kebab, Lamb Biryani, Paneer Makhni). Superb service as well.

The Chiefs know how to cook at Dastann. Their food is delicious, I have now been multi times, and the food is always spot on.My criticism is with the waiters, they just don't leave you alone, and every time you look up there, watching you. I also find the service tip prompt when you pay by card abit cheeky.

Excellent Indian food. The restaurant is quite small so I would suggest booking in advance. All of the dishes we had tasted great and everyone was left satisfied with the food. Would definitely recommend and come back again! Parking is limited in the area and so you might need to park on a side road and walk up. Since my original review some years ago, the food continues to be some of the best in the area. This is our go-to recommendation for Indian food food in South London.

A wonderful place. Great food with great service. We took 2 5 year olds and most of the food is a bit too spicy for them! Avoid the chicken lollipops for kids (great for adults) but the nans were so sweet the kids couldn’t get enough. I’ve tried 4 main dishes and would recommend them all.

It was fine, there was nothing massively wrong with the food- just wasn’t worth the hype and I thought it was really expensive for what it was. Not sure why it has any Michelin rating, I personally wouldn’t go again

There is no doubt that this place offers excellent tasting (Butter chicken/ curries and breads are amazing) unique Indian food, but I have to be blunt and say, the Cafe style eating place looks rather cheap, it's so hot and stuffy, small and so loud you can't relax in this place. That was a major downer for the group. I also went on a date with my husband and we felt hounded throughout our meal. The servers mean well But the balance isnt quite right! The service was annoying, constantly trying to make you finish your wine or have another cocktail. Very pushy waiters who hover around you eagerly wanting you to finish up and get you onto the next phase of your meal. The food is Michelin but the service is not on point. Yaadien who is currently ranked number 1 curry house in Epsom on Tripadvisor (for a long while now), with 4.7 Google reviews in addition to other great accolades puts this place to shame. I am so sorry to say, but you can experience beautiful decor, calm and sophisticated dining with great food elsewhere.

Tried this place on the recommendation of friends and we were not disappointed! The service was excellent and the food was some of the best Indian food I have had in the UK. They were also able to cater for my garlic allergy which was a massive plus! Would highly recommend. We loved it so much that we have booked to go again already.

I probably chose the wrong food but it was not the best Indian I have ever had for the price but it was good, big portions. Really wanted something spicy with the popadoms. We went there due to apparent good reviews. Hard to tell how good food and service was, as atmosphere was totally ruined by the excessive noise from the rest of the clientele in the restaurant. We could not hear each other as the surrounding noise was so loud! Unbelievable!

I ordered fast an on deliveroo and so cannot comment on service or atmosphere. However, the food itself is incredible, the butter chicken is the best I’ve ever eaten, it is seasoned well, the chicken is tender, and it’s warm even after being delivered. While the price is relatively high, I would say it’s entirely worth it

Eaten in but its hard to get a table at short notice so we've had a takeaway (collection) on a number of occasions as a treat. Superb food and portions large enough to have a full meal the next day. It's worth the few extra quid for that alone but also the attention to detail and quality is first class.
