Dan's Restaurant in Wiltshire

Dans has a really interesting menu and the dishes we had were superb! Great for food lovers and for all sorts of occasions, casual, romantic, family and friends!

We drove 3 hours to meet overseas family we hadn't seen for 10 years and it was well worth the trip! Easy to find, easy to park, charming area of Marlborough. Cheerful welcome, comfortable seating, great service. The 3 course set lunch was really good, beautifully cooked and presented, very reasonable quantities and we all really enjoyed it. A very nice ambiance, plenty of other diners clearly familiar with the place and enjoying themselves too. We stayed much longer than we expected, and nobody rushed to get us out. Would definitely go again, if only it wasn't so far away!

Great location to meet family from Cotswolds as we travelled from south of Salisbury. Food was great, lovely starter and we all had Sunday roast. Accommodated grandchild well. The biggest criticism was slow service and the place is tired and toilets are dirty and had no toilet paper. The upstairs room was tatty as was the walk from that to toilets. This restaurant with some investment would be great.

The food was exceptional, beautifully presented and delicious. The service, however was extremely poor. The waitresses were not very engaging and also untidy in their appearance which was a shame and let the restaurant down.

Just before Christmas my cousin and I met here with our husbands as it was equidistant from where we both live and was easy to get to from the M4. We had the Christmas lunch which was great. There was a good choice and we had 3 courses each. I had the smoked salmon with crayfish followed by the sea bass and my husband had soup and roast beef. It was all delicious. For dessert we had apple crumble and chocolate nemesis which were both gorgeous. It was a good value meal and the ambience was lovely and very festive. It is located in the heart of Marlborough with various parking options. The staff were very efficient, friendly and helpful. We will definitely return.

We booked months in advance and were seated in the middle of two tables of four ( not great for a couple ) . Three guys were then allocated a table next to us as a walk in and were totally drunk swearing the whole time we were there with no intervention from staff in fact the two ladies seemed more attentive to them than others . Food was excellent however little gravy given in Christmas dinner !! Did ask but by time it came we had finished our food . Overall food was lovely however the whole experience was that of a noisy pub with very little service , drinks came wrong , not a pleasant place to sit for a meal as a couple !

Always enjoy our visits to Dan’s at the crown. Fantastic service, great wine choices but the star of the show is the food. The Mezze is incredible I don’t bother reading anything else on menu it’s so good and the beef medallions were amazing. The gravy is insane! Will be back soon Thank you

After a lot of hype thought we would try this place. Gutted is the feeling I left with had the partridge to start just lacked any flavour also tried the carpaccio which was lovely to was but the meat had a grey tint to the edges so not fresh. Had the venison for main complete let down the meat was lovely and pink the pot pie and cabbage a disaster. Left and went to get a burger from bite me. Not normally one for bad reviews but this was a massive disappointment

I'd heard good reports of Dan's but was a bit disappointed with some of the food. The relaxed and well-spaced dining areas were plain but pleasant and relaxing, and thankfully without piped music. Also the arrival welcome and table service were excellent. A starter of patridge breast was tough and dry so clearly overcooked. In comparison, the beef carpaccio was very good. A main course of loin of lamb was a bit overcooked and the rest of the dish rather twee. However, the fillet of halibut dish was well received. I wasn't particualrly impressed with the puddings and on a chilly evening, something more substantial, but still well presented, would have been welcome. Generally, I felt that the dishes served to us tended to be more about assembly skills and presentation than genuinely good cooking and nourishing food. However, others in our party were content and we enjoyed our evening. Perhaps we will try again another time.

Went here as a family group celebrating a special birthday. Food was exceptional across all three courses with nice wine choices. The service was faultless. We all enjoyed the whole experience and wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

Dan’s at the Crown was excellent all round. The food was sublime, we had 2 mains and a dessert. This is so worth visiting and is highly recommended.

I went here Sunday lunchtime for the roast , I had beef the flavour was lovely , I've certainly had more tender meat but it was og so tasty. The gravy was rich and flavoursome and the cauliflower cheese was very cheesy , it was up there with some of the best roasts I've had. The hazelnut parfait with toffee sauce was epic and plentiful. Overall not the cheapest and discretionary 10% always rubs me up the wrong way , but the food was so good I am overlooking it.

Food was sooooo good. I had the chicken curry and my friends had the halloumi and the sea bass (or bream?). They also rustled up a children's fish and chips and peas for my 1 year old despite not having a children's menu. Sadly we didn't have room for pudding! Will definitely be going back though. Only slight issue I have is their obligatory service charge that's added to your bill. I probably would have left a larger tip on the table had it been my choice to tip but I'm not keen on being forced to do it.

My husband and I went to Dan's on Saturday 2 September to celebrate a birthday. We know many people who have said how very good it is so went, for the first time, with high expectations. Sadly, for us, our meal did not live up to expectation. We booked early, 6.45pm, to avoid a busy Saturday evening service, and arrived about 5 minutes early. Our welcome was lukewarm and the service was very slow, given that until after 7.00pm the restaurant was empty. We ordered 2 main courses which took almost 40 minutes to arrive. The food was OK but at no point were we asked whether everything was "OK". When a young lady came to take our plates and then asked how we had enjoyed the meal, I said that we didn't particularly and were very disappointed at the slowness of the service. A few minutes later the manager arrived at our table and we complained to her. She said that she would pass our comments on. A 10% service charge was deducted from the bill and we left with a bill of £73.40 for 2 glasses of wine and 2 mains. What a disappointment, given the excellent reviews that precede this one.

My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here on 30 August. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and value for money. We shared a starter of pigeon breast, then I followed with loin of pork. My husband had lamb tagine. We both had dessert, a hazelnut parfait for me and a chocolate and orange concoction for him. Gorgeous! A Nohito was the nicest I’ve ever tried. The staff were friendly, and the service was efficient and unobtrusive. We’ll be going back, and can highly recommend Dan’s both for its excellent cuisine and value.

I think this may actually be one of my new favourite places to eat! We have been twice now in a short space of time because the food has been sensational! Honestly can’t fault anything!! I can’t wait to go back and try more things on their menu!!!

The food at dans is always a wow for me. An exciting and reasonably priced dining experience, always made to feel special by the welcoming staff. The plethora of different dishes is impressive and the taste is great. Would recommend for a special occasion.

Absolutely! Not only did the team accommodate a drop in with no booking and a rammed restaurant but made us feel like it was no bother at all. From our greeting to our digestif, just wonderful. We took my partner’s parents on Saturday night (we’ve been raving about Dan’s and promising to take them for about 5 years, so the hype was going to be hard to live up to). They LOVED it! We all chose different things from the menu and were all thrilled with what arrived. I personally had the swordfish to start and the pork tenderloin for main. A masterclass in depth, but also balance of flavour. There was texture in abundance, there was ‘interest’ (a little component that surprises and delights) and flawless cuisson on both dishes. Rarely do you peruse a menu that you can only discount one or two options from and are genuinely salivating at the thought of the other 90%!! The service was polished but informal, Friendly but sharp. Hard to do, but at Dan’s they consistently do this so well.Somehow they continue to make fine dining comfortable, not only with the atmosphere and ambiance, but also with their dishes and flavours. As it turns out… Eating exceptional and well-presented food, doesn’t have to be done in a stuffy restaurant, hanging off the sommelier’s every whisper, whilst conversing in hushed tones. This review is not about the food at Dan's (which is always amazing!) but about how wonderful this place is as a bar as well as a restaurant. It is such a welcoming space for drinks and we were spoilt for choice with an amazing wine list, fab selection of cocktails (including both of my absolute favourites!) and well-chosen beers. Beautiful ambience and classy decor throughout (also nod to the art choices, which are great). The service is my idea of perfect - friendly, welcoming and attentive but not fussy or OTT. We couldn't have been better looked after as we worked our way through a few drinks before heading home for dinner. Very, very happy customers. Thank you to Tana, Gill, Charlie and Dan who all made for a wonderful evening!

We entered the restaurant and were impressed by the décor and ambiance of the place. However, the food was a big disappointment. My husband ordered the beef carpaccio which was good apart from the flood of pesto which drowned out the other flavours. I ordered the octopus dish but would have expected a lot more octopus, plus again, it was overpowered by the remoulade.My husband’s main course was the venison dish which came with a small shepherd’s pie as well. We suspect this had been microwaved as the potato on the top wasn’t nice and crispy and it was scalding hot. The venison itself was very chewy.I ordered the stone bass and prawn dish. The fish had no flavour as it was overpowered by the tomatoes and potatoes underneath (couldn’t taste any fennel unfortunately). The prawn was cut in half length-ways, it was a lovely big prawn which I would have preferred to be left whole so as not to dry it out. It was overcooked.The highlight of my husband’s meal was the cheese board which was good. The only trouble was the biscuits served alongside were soft and looked like dog biscuits! Apart from being disappointed with the meal, the staff were not welcoming and no one at any point came to ask us if everything was OK. We would have shared out opinions with the restaurant if anyone had bothered to ask us. We paid £147 for our meal and came away terribly disappointed.Our second night and meal in Marlborough was a brilliant experience at The Marlborough at the other end of the High Street. I think Dan and his staff have maybe become complacent and need to think again.

We met friends here lunch. I had the roast beef and it was delicious. I had a well made Long Island Iced and the ice cream for dessert. Next time we are in Marlborough I will be eating here again. We all enjoyed our tasty meals.

I have had had many evening meals at Dan's, but yesterday was my first lunch. Food selection was great and the duck starter and chicken main meal I had were excellent. My lunch partner also commented on how good the food was. Service from the front of house staff was brilliant, and so friendly. As said, the food was excellent and so a big thank you to the kitchen. Dan, what a great job you do in enabling all of this.

So good to now have lunch here and then go to the cinema opposite. Staff are great and attentive...sat outside with a friend and had a lovely lunch. Frozen cocktails pretty good too.

Space seemed nice on arrival as looked the menu. Food was average at best, my wife had goats cheese and I had battered prawns both of which were ok, we both then had the bass which had no flavour at all apart from salt, could not even taste my wine due to the salt. At no point whilst we were eating starter or main were we asked if everything was ok. Clearly complacent and overall dissappointing.

We had a lovely meal in this very warm and welcoming setting. Staff were charming, genuine and friendly and the food was great.Starters included octopus (very unusual to find in the UK, and even less common to find it so well cooked) and delicious goats cheese with honey lavender sauce.Mains were also great - a really unusual Korean sauced chicken with kimchi and sriracha sauce was just awesome, and stone bass was also delicious.Nice choice of desserts too - parfait with hot toffee sauce, and some delicious coconut ice cream.All in all just a perfect dining experience. Relaxed, friendly, genuine, and great food. We will definitely be back.

We were seated in the marquee which was a great place to eat in . But might by now have been removed which is a shame as I think many people would like to eat in a more airy space . The staff were really lovely , service was good and the food just outstanding and in terms of value for money just amazing . We ate out quite a bit on our trip to Wiltshire and this was without doubt our best meal . I had the seared mackerel on a beetroot tart tatin , just outstanding . Followed by the spicy pork, wonderful flavours , really really good . Rounded off with the Hazelnut parfait . Yum yum I was very satisfied . You will need to book and should do so immediately. sadly we didn't have time to go back again .

Best in Marlborough, by a country mile. Quality, value, service - excellent. Not the longest menu but everything is there, and for good reason. Good wine list, great choices and again, at reasonable prices.

WOW what a find. Tucked away in a side street is a gem of a restaurant offering unusual and delicious food. They offer a range of intriguing (and delicious) starters and some slightly more usual mains all beautifully cooked and presented followed by a mouthwatering dessert menu. It is hard to recommend any particular dish as there was nothing on the menu that I would not have happily eaten, to the extent that I even considered a vegetarian option which has never happened before. We will definitely be going back as there is so much more on the menu that needs exploring. The only very minor niggle is that the service though very friendly was a little slow, but hey food like this is worth waiting for.

Spent a lovely evening in the main restaurant. Great food (we chose the mezzo sharing board, lamb loin, stone mash with crab mash, hazelnut parfait and the blondie) great wine and lovely friendly informal service. Came to Dan’s a few years ago before it was @ The Crown, nice to see it is just as good now. Would definitely recommend.

Came here on Friday night we were in the outside room waitresses were lovely, Dan took our food order. The food was amazing 3 of us had the sea bass and crab mash which we all said was best we had had, and two lamb which was lovely as well, the starters and desserts did not disappoint. Excellent. We ate at Rick Steins the evening before and to be honest was a little underwhelmed with it, lack of seasoning and a little bland perhaps it was an off night?? Dan’s was such a treat we will definitely return.

Good service and pleasant ambience.We visited several times when Dan's was at its previous location and can vouch for the fact that the menu is just as good at the new(ish) location. We look forward to returning soon by which time seating will probably be in the building itself which looks characterful and interesting.

We had lunch at Dan’s yesterday (my two elderly parents, my sister and I) and were very disappointed with the experience. We found the food mediocre; eating in the sterile environment of the outside canopy (no decor like a surgical ward) which is next to a busy road where very large lorries go up and down did not lend itself to a pleasant environment. Even though the tables are dressed with white tablecloths where one would expect the serving staff would be properly attired and trained in silver service waitering, they were dressed as if for a pizzeria with one girl even wearing shorts. Will not recommend this restaurant to our professional friends. Even Rick Stein had a better standard of waitressing!!!!

We tried Dan's as we had heard such good reports about the food and, happily, those reports were fully justified. What fabulous fusions of tastes and ingredients. The portions aren't huge but that did not spoil our enjoyment of all the dishes we ordered, which included a mackerel starter, sea bass, samphire and scallop mash and affogato to finish. The drinks menu offers good choice too and is reasonably priced. We loved the airy feel of the main restaurant and the friendly, relaxed waiting staff. A new find for us for special occasions.

A terrific outside (under canopy) dining experience with a lovely atmosphere. The popularity of this restaurant, even on a Thursday evening, was clear to see and I can only imagine that tables at the weekend are much sought after.Our party of 4, including a veggie, had a range of the dishes on the current website menu and we all enjoyed ours immensely. I went for the Pork and Octopus as it sounded 'unusual' but it went together very well - beautifully presented!The Warm Peanut Butter Blondie was superb and definitely for the sweet-toothed diner ;-)Wouldn't hesitate to come back when next in Marlborough when a 'special' meal is required.

Last minute booking on our way home from an overnight wild dining event in the Cotswolds.The staff were very welcoming and friendly.The walled garden was like being sat in the Med' somewhere (hottest day of the year so far). The staff looked like they were melting, but still very attentive. The food was lovely, even managing to cater for a gluten intolerant non meat eater! The only disappointment was not having room for a dessert - they looked divine.We will definitely be back

Sunday lunch. I tend for find Sunday roast options a disappointment as a rule as I always benchmark against my wife’s, but not here. I’d say best I’ve had outside of my home.Roast potatoes were done to perfection. Nice n fluffy inside but proper crispy skins. Perfect. Huge Yorktown and the beef perfectly pink. Well done.

If you don't find satisfaction at this venue in at least your starter, main, dessert or beer/wine choice then you're not human!Yes the main man can be somewhat tough in his demeanour but isn't that the charm to a top joint in any town? On tap you can get world class lagers and the from the bottle, fine wines, there is a little something for everyone at Dan's.The gin and tonic prawns will win every time and the fillet of beef will be hard to challenge in many places. Ok, the odd special will not perform but this is and feels like a true experiment of a Chef known in a town where he can test his audience with all his might.Dessert will give you all the smiles when you get stuck into the hazelnut parfait or dare to dig deep into the affogato!

I took my wife to Dans for a birthday dinner, dinning at the time was outdoors only. The facility was extremely well managed and customer focused and the staff extremely pleasant and friendly.The food was exceptional I had the veal and my wife had the duck both delicious, cheese and biscuits and a blonde for after again very good.Overall we had an excellent evening and I would recommend you give Dans a try, you won't be disappointed.

The venue inside the marque is fantastic it has ample heating, comfortable chairs, but the food is basic, fresh & frozen ingredients are used on the menu.Portions are small and it is very expensive.Can’t help but feel they’re trying to be something they’re not.I’m going to say 6/10 and if I were you I would go to Pino’s instead.

Went for an anniversary meal just before Christmas and chose the Christmas menu. Food was fantastic, decor appropriately festive and service friendly and efficient. May not be the cheapest but definitely one of the best in the town. We will be back.

We sat upstairs and it was cavenous . I was disapponted with the meal others were ok but with no atmosphere we didnt want to linger.

Really blown away by our meal tonight. Lovely food. Crab mash was fabulous and Stone Bass cooked perfectly. Starter menu exceptional. Clever contemporary food, imaginative menu, beautifully presented. Great cocktails to start, Really nice well priced wine, and charming service - for £40 a head. Really lovely to eat somewhere that is trying so hard and succeeding in such difficult times.

We went to Dan’s last Saturday the ambience of the restaurant was gorgeous!!! The food all 3 courses were amazing the best fillet of beef we have had in a long time - staff very polite and attentive- we will definitely be going back soon !

In a great part of Marlborough, Dan’s is okay but nothing to get over excited by. Bistro’y, with interesting menu and seemingly imaginative food combinations. Nice staff, good wine list. But the trouble is, it’s unrelentingly brown food. The deep fried stuff, brown. Meat, fish...brown. Potatoes...brown. The flavours are okay though.

We weren't welcomed, she simply arrived at the table and asked for drinks. After jotting down the drinks, she asked if we were ready to order food, so the pacing was of a cafe, not a smart restaurant. I tried to warm her up, but she wasn't having any of it. Very matter-of-fact.The food was nice, I had the gin and tonic prawn in tempura batter, but they came with an aioli, when i felt they should be with something sharper as they were deep fat fried. I also ordered the pan-fried fish, maybe a bit too oily for me, but it was lovely as was the crab mash and the samphire was delicious.The restaurant was NOT warm and we were by the log stove. Maybe it had something to do with COVID. But there were other customers with coats on. it was a trifle expensive for what we all thought was an ordinary service.

Just been to Dan’s for the third time this year and again, it’s been absolutely top drawer. He’s made a monumental effort during lockdown; the food and experience during such a difficult time has brought a little bit of ‘normal’ back to life. Love it!

Super lunch at Dan’s yesterday. Best food we’ve eaten for a while. Highly recommend! We sat in the marquee and were able to take our little pug, who was very well behaved! Menu superb with lots to choose from and I took ages to decide as there was so much I fancied. Staff very friendly and wore face masks and tables set well apart - felt very safe!

Dan's is the place for you if you want excellent quality, non-pretentious but delicious food! An excellent team helps and wonderful ambience helps add to an all round fantastic meal out. The lamb rump is stunning but then I can't think I've ever had anything that isn't delicious, and I eat here A LOT! Ignore any suggestions that there are hidden charges - the discretionary service is clearly printed on the bottom of the menu and the 'hidden tax' is a little blighter known as VAT and is only separated out on the bill for accounting/expenses claims; the cost is already reflected in the prices you'll see on the menu. In short: a truly wonderful and fully independent restaurant and freehouse.
