This is a hotel restaurant in a great spot with amazing potential. The food was in general well presented however the food was over cooked. My starter of pigeon was way over cooked. They offered to bring a fresh one but it was exactly the same. Likewise the lamb main course was also overcooked

We stayed for 3 nights and had the best time yes it's looking a we bit tired decor wise. But the staff were amazing couldn't do enough for us. Our room was prefect from the dour poster bed to the victorian bathroom. We stayed for bed and breakfast wow! The food was fantastic. The surroundings are stunning weve seen so much wild life. Can't wait to go back.

This hotel restaurant dinner was simply superb, and one of the most enjoyable we have had for a long time. We had a pre dinner whisky and G & T in the well stocked bar, attended by excellent staff. The mea was then served with care and attention, and did not disappoint. The starters were beautifully presented, and not at all over facing ready for the main courses. The two mains we had - one beef , the other pork, were beautifully cooked and presented, and well balanced without overdoing the quantities or subtleties of flavours delivered. The deserts were again just the right quantity, and delicious. Retreating back to the homely sitting room for a pre-bed nightcap of local Highlander whiskies was perfect, and the best preparation for bedtime!

We visited after two days in the hills, so we were really hungry and the size of the portions was good (in fact I was that full that I left four chips as tasty as they were). Staff were really helpful, especially Sam and it was great to sit in front of the fire near reception with a drink after the meal.

I would give am excellent for dinner and poor for breakfast hence the average rating. The porridge was served inconsistently when asking for it with all the trimmings we quite often didn't get them. There was only one slice of toast for breakfast which was mean and little butter so quite miserly.

Beautiful location below Ben Gulabin. We watched a golden eagle soaring across the hill on our drive in. Our room was huge with a lovely outlook over the Scots Pines to the mountains. Very quiet at night.Huge bathroom too and nice shower products (The White Company.) Nice comfortable cosy lounges for guests and lovely grounds to stroll. Haven't dined in yet but the breakfasts have been very good.Only complaint - the taste of chlorine from the tea - or else its the metallic taste from a Jackson boiler. That needs sorted! Just one of these lovely places to arrive at.

After trekking the Cateran way we arrived at the stunning Glenshee but due to our own stupidity in not realising just how remote the place is, there is no shops for miles, we were starving and went to Dalmunzie assuming we could be fed but despite its bragging that non-residents are welcome, we were not allowed to eat! Instead we sunk a couple of the most expensive pints I've ever had to pay for and then left. Location is beautiful but plebs like us were priced out.

The place has clearly gone up market and for those who think quality comes in a smart wrapping paper then this possibly hits the mark, but the old, charming, low key welcome and atmosphere is gone, perhaps inevitably, if you must become a castle.

I called in and asked if they served coffee. We were told they did and so that's what we ordered. The coffee arrived but so did a plate of (average) scones with clotted cream and jam. I was too embarrassed to say anything in front of the person I was with (though I've only got myself to blame for not questioning why they had brought something I didn't ask for!) but I thought it would be a reasonable price. Both of us just had one scone so imagine my shock at a bill for £15.90! Are you kidding me? Not worth it all, no wonder we were the only ones there!

From the outside, this place is lovely (unless you go round the back where the bins are overflowing)....but it could certainly do with a revamp inside. Sad decor, and both ladies' and gents' loos with broken locks. (And what's with the pair of yellow ceramic wellies, with flowers stuffed into them?)It was cold outside, and we decided to stay by the log burner a while. We asked for tea for two, with a scone. When it arrived, the tea - ONE cup each - was lukewarm, and the 4 scones were flat and hard. They were anything but fresh. Irritatingly, although the accompanying jams were good, there wasn't nearly enough of it (or cream) to cover the scones. Nobody bothered to come and ask if we were happy with our tea or scones, and when we eventually mentioned how cold the tea was, nobody seemed remotely interested anyway. How they have the nerve to call one cup of awful tea and 2 stale scones 'afternoon tea', is beyond me, but they do. And they charged us £8 EACH for the experience! I'm sure this place could be lovely, if less corners were cut, and more attention was paid. As it is, we'd never go back.

We stayed for one night in June 2016 having been impressed by the website. Unfortunately about three weeks earlier the manager and most of the staff had apparently left. The new manager tried his best (which wasn't great) but with virtually no staff the result was grim. The hotel is tired, the rooms were not clean, our bathroom seemed to have been last decorated in the 1950's with stained walls, cracked basin, horrible plastic shower curtain, the bedroom curtains did not fit well, did not run on the nasty plastic curtain rail and let lots of light in. The food was not bad but the service was very slow (one waitress on her third day). The bill was way over the top for what we experienced. Best avoided.

With only 8 residents booked for dinner you might have thought the chance of 2 more guests willing to stump up £45 per head + a decent drinks bill would be very welcome. But sadly no chef couldn't possibly accommodate that. Arrived in bar at 1700 and asked if we could dine, chef didn't have enough food - how can they hope to survive. Bar drinks are also grossly overpriced £4.80 for a pint of local beer and £7.45 a GnT seem to be cashing in on the demise of the Spittal Hotel. Could do a great trade if you were willing to put in a little effort and welcome the residents of the cottages. Would have loved a cooked breakfast on departure day having packed up a cottage or a meal on arrival day. Never before heard of a hotel that closes its doors totally on a Tuesday - are you really trying to run a successful hotel. Outside also looks absurd where beautiful old grey building has been partially painted in cream and stopped mid way. No sign of the old scrap book explaining the history of the railway etc which your US visitors would have lapped up. Sad to see how this place is run now - where are the new owners - don't you want a successful hotel?

The hotel was closed when we were planning our trip. We had only ever planned to play golf but would of had lunch there. It seems if the hotel isn't busy they just close it. Make sure you telephone before planning to visit. The scenery is breathtaking and the hotel looks good. After our 9 holes of golf we found the owner in his office in the hotel. We had a quick look around the main reception/lounge area and it looked very nice. Reviews in the visitors book indicated the hotel served excellent food but of course we can't comment on that. The hotel is in a beautiful location, with it's own 9 hole golf course. The course was very wet and perhaps really should not have been open. Ideal location if you want a walking or fishing holiday.

I have visited Dalmunzie for many years under a variety of owners, the last two of whom have been Australian. I have no problem with Aussies, but they just don't get it when it comes to running a highland hotel. We now stay in one of the cottages on the surrounding estate and would happily use the hotel's bar and restaurant if there was any encouragement to do so. The nearest rival hotel has recently burned down so you might expect Dalmunzie to be busy, but it was dodo like when we called in for a drink. We were served by a nice Czech girl, but there was no incentive to order bar snacks. Dinner costs a ridiculous £55, so for a birthday celebration with a party of nine we went down the glen to The Bridge of Cally and had a fun evening.I don't believe this hotel will ever succeed until it is once again under the same ownership as the estate and charges reasonable prices. It is sad to see it in decline.

I must first say that Dalmunzie Estate has nothing to do with Dalmunzie Castle. Which is a shame because if it it was I am sure it would be far better. I did stay at the hotel many years ago returning many times for family holidays. I would not want to do it again at the moment. We were staying at one of the cottages on the estate so would have wanted the hotel to be far better. We decided to eat in the hotel with some people (family) who were staying there.First the cook could not cope with 5 walkins without us ordering before and then asking us to be seated at 18:45. In the restaurant there were only about another 10 guests that I could see. So with us (the walkins and 4 booked in) there was about 20 in all. My son has worked in a number of high class and high pressure kitchens so was surprised with this. When waiting we had a drink at the bar. The waitress whilst pleasant did not know how to pull a pint or even where in the glass you should fill it up to (I needed a ladder to get through the head on the pint.). It was a bit on the expensive side as well but then it is a hotel. When I was there before locals would go the bar as well as the hotel guests this added a bit of colour to an evening. There is an ancient bar billiards table and it is the same table that was there 40+ years ago. Nothing wrong with that but the green baize was ripped and silver gaffer tape had been used to repair it. The timer on the table did not work but it did not work many years ago.The rooms that I looked in looked tired with things out of place. Now for the meal. They were very insistent that we pre-ordered and were sat down by 18:45.The choice was limited to 3 per course for a 3 course meal at £45. If you were a veggie then it was cheese followed by cheese, not good planning. The presentation of the food was good, but serving was not up to the standard that I expect for the cost. The quality was OK, but my son did suffer the next day, and he was the only one who had the fish for a main. The meal also had an appetiser soup which was reasonable in taste. I had the rabbit terrine as starter which was OK but cut very thin considering the number of rabbits on the front lawn that could have been included. Likewise the tomato and mozzarella starter, the mozzarella was sliced the thinnest ever seen, but tasted fine. This was followed by a raspberry sorbet that did not refresh the palate, it was too sweet, lemon would have been better, or nothing at all. Main course and sweet were acceptable, the guinea fowl being very nice indeed. We were part of a large group, which the wine cellar seemed to have trouble with, unless you paid £££s for each bottle, note to hotel - please ensure you have a good stock of table wines. The setting for Dalmuzie Hotel is beautiful, nothing could improve on that. The hotel does need some attention paying to it to ensure a totally wonderful stay.So like a school report "Could do better"

Please see seperate 3/5 review of Hotel. The food here is astonishing, standing out for miles around including Perth and Braemar.Only poor elements are the decor: the bar is horrible - think 1970s youth club tuck shop. It really needs ripped out and started again. The decor in the restaurant is uninspiring compared to the rest of the hotel - it's badly in need of wood panelling or interesting wallpaper, an open fire and better flooring. The food was exsquisite although strangely (we were on an eat/stay package) we were not offerred additional items available to dining only customers. In my experience this is and should be standard practice to offer this for a supplement which is quoted on the menu. For this reason, we couldn't indulge in the amazing looking cheeseboard and chocolate fondant being enjoyed by others - they just weren't on the menu we were given. Bizarre as I would happily have helped fill their coffers a bit by paying a supplement.Saying all of the above, I can't recall eating better food in a Scottish Restaurant with a good emphasis on Scottish ingredients. The staff were knowledgable when it came to the menu and very attentive. A particular standout was my Wife's Beetroot 3 Ways dessert.Given that the purpose of a restaurant is to eat in, I'll give it 5 stars but if the other stuff bothers you, watch out.

We loved our stay in 2005 so much that we returned for a few days in June 2007 for my husband's 50th birthday.Dining at Dalmunzie is an experience vastly different from any other that I have had. We had been touring for the day and arrived a little later than we had booked for. No problem! We were seated by the fire (yes the fire is lit all year, apparently), shown the menu and we ordered pre-dinner drinks. Our order was taken and it was not until the meal was ready to be served that we were shown to our table. Hors d'oeuvres were served by the fire as well. How civilised is that??? The food was delicious and generous and quite reasonably priced (especially when we've frequently paid 30 pounds for two courses in pubs!) The staff were attentive and never gave the appearance of being rushed. Another day we had afternoon tea on the lawn. Silver tea pot, quiet, secluded spot, beautiful scones - what more could you ask for?In a place like this, breakfast is not to be rushed. The breakfast room overlooks part of the Glen. A full breakfast and a beautiful view is too good to be rushed, but I'm sure that if we'd been in a hurry the staff would have done their best to help us meet our deadline.

We were enjoying a nice drink in the beer garden one sunny afternoon, when a youth started shouting & swearing at us because we were English (which was funny in itself because none of us are 100% English). The locals were appalled at his behaviour & the landlord immediately ejected him, however, it cast a shadow on our visit.

Almost 5 pounds for a cappuccino for which no order has been taken at first, for which you then have to wait more than 20 minutes, with a spoon and sugar missing and, as a highlight, a 10% service fee appears on the bill? As beautiful as it is in Gleneagles - unfortunately we didn't like it at all...
