Decided to book this hotel as myself and my partner try to veer away as much as we can from the “corporates”. The staff were more then accommodating. The lady met me out in the car park and offered to help with my luggage. This is old school but I loved it, you don’t get this kind of service any more. We were upgraded for free with a complimentary late check out. We will definitely be returning, the do the simple things well - that’s what counts.

Came here and decided to have a selection of the starters between three of us. We ordered the squid which came with a lovely aioli, pigs in blankets which were huge and the tastiest I have ever had, the most amazing sweet potato fries, lovely skinny fries, chicken liver parfait, arancini that was divine, and the best haddock goujons ever. It was very quiet which was nice, the decor is beautiful and the staff were great, nothing was too much trouble at all. I highly recommend this place and I am one of the fussiest people. I have sent food back in the Burj Al Arab so that's how particular I am about my food.

We came here to meet my mother for lunch. My parents had been here before and my stepdad wasn't massively impressed but because it's close to mum's office we decided to try it again. We were told our fish and chips would take at least half an hour longer than usual because the fish "wasn't ready yet" and that everything is "hand made" which strongly suggests to me it's frozen. Since we didn't have all to wait my stepdad and I just ordered sandwiches and some chips and mum ordered the burger. 30 minutes after ordering our two sandwiches arrived. I ordered a ploughmans sandwich and it was very very disappointing indeed. It was pre-sliced rubbery tasteless cheese with tonnes of margarine and (if I'm not mistaken) Branston pickle and a sliced gherkin. What were advertised as "chunky chips" we're like bootlaces. 45 minutes after ordering my mum's burger still hadn't arrived so we asked where it was we were told it would be 7 minutes. We couldn't wait around so we decided to call it a day and mum ended up with nothing. We complained and weren't charged for drinks or the burger that never arrived. We won't be returning.

We visited at 14:00 on a Sunday. We were a little unnerved to be the only people in the bar. Our gain was other people's loss. We had a fantastic two course meal. The portions are exceptionally generous and the food is of excellent quality. I had the parsnip mousse with mushrooms and my girlfriend had the ceasar salad as starters. We both had roast beef for the main course. With the tastecard discount it came to a whopping £20. Such was the quality and quantity of food, we would have happily have paid more than the normal £20 per person for a 2 course meal. Cannot recommend the food highly enough and will be back again. Portions were so generous we had no room for dessert!

Menu did not appear to be so extensive as previous, but decent enough choice. We both went for the fish and chips as a main, and absolutely no complaints, well cooked and sufficient for a lunch. Our only gripe was that we had to wait a full 45 minutes for the chicken ceasar salad starter. It was a great starter and no complaints but it did feel like a long wait. 1] Booked a table for lunch, with a wheelchair user, they reserved a table upstairs - they set a table in a side room which turned out to be a corridor. 2] the 'Turkey with stuffing and cranberry' sandwich had no stuffing or cranberry sauce. And the chips arrived after we'd finished eating the rest of the main course. 3] the 'salmon with pistachio crust' had no crust (pistachio or otherwise). 4] some of the turkey in one of the turkey meals was raw - the waiter ignored this information when told. 5] the dessert didn't arrive for ages (we cancelled it in the end) because they had a party of 'over 100' upstairs and couldn't cope. 6] when making the reservation, no one mentioned the party of more than 100 people that would mean they kitchen couldn't cope with the normal restaurant/bar food. 7] nothing was deducted from the bill to take into consideration the problems.

So, here we are, back at Jolyons more or less a year since our last stay.Pleased to say not much has changed, still pleasant, staff still helpful and attentive (although there does seem to have been a turnround there and some of the familiar faces were missing)Stayed in the venetian suite at the front of the hotel, comfortable room with a jacuzzi type bath and the usual superb overhead shower.Seems there was a wedding reception going on there Saturday afternoon that led to the usual evening party in the white room, have to say that neither event disturbed us.... My wife did sneak a peak at the reception room before the bride and groom arrived and said it was beautiful.Breakfast was up to the usual standard and more than enough to fuel a morning following Mrs Davies around the shops in Cardiff ;-) All in all, another pleasant weekend, we'll be back soon.

We ate here when staying at the hotel. The menu was handed to us with an explanation that it was 'about to change, ignore some of the information, there is no point in correcting it as it's about to change'. The menu was a simple print out, so why the difficulty in changing it I don't know- it just seemed a little careless; lack of attention to detail. The starters were good, and the main course was well cooked. The sweets were terrible. The lemon tart is the worst I have ever had. The ice ream with nuts, sorbet, had no nuts or sorbet. The lemon curd ice-cream was so bright it could have lit the way in the dark. It was quite unpleasant. we commented to the waiter and he didn't respond really and we felt he didn't quite understand that we were complaining. He was so pleasant, that we didn't like to push the point. I think if you are tired and can't be bothered to walk in to town this will do for a meal but there are better places to go. The staff are nice, and the setting is quite pleasant, could be worse.

We ate here using a Living Social voucher that offered a starter, a main course and a glass of house wine each for two people for £19. We dined on a Friday when the restaurant was half full.On arrival, the décor looked dated. I noticed the lining coming out on some of the chairs due to rips in the fabric. The chairs were too low for the tables so it wasn’t a particularly comfortable dining experience. The theme they are going for is shabby chic, but unfortunately, the restaurant is more shabby than chic. The lady who served us took our voucher from us and then came back with food menus and a wine list. She obviously knew we had a voucher so it would have been helpful if she had explained what wines we could choose from. It was only after we had tried to order with another gentleman that we were informed that there were only three wines available to us, a red a white or a rosé. The wine my partner tried to order was apparently not in the offer, despite it being the same price as the ones that were. I heard the lady actually tell another table that they could choose any wine that was available by the glass, but when the gentleman came to take their order, they could not have the ones they had selected and had to make a different choice. The information given to customers needs to be consistent and all staff should be aware of what is and is not included in the offer so that this does not happen again. It is fair enough that only house wine is included in the offer; in fact it clearly states that this is the case on the voucher, but it is annoying when you are told one thing and have made your selection only to be told that actually, you are not allowed to have it.I found the food menu to be slightly limited and the options boring. I eventually chose the goats cheese fritters to start and fish and chips for my main course. My partner had the laver bread starter and the chicken breast main. The starters were both excellent but the main courses were average. My peas were not cooked and the batter on my fish was soggy. A plus point was that the chips were good and plentiful. Our plates were cleared and we waited for ages to be offered a dessert menu but this never happened. We both would have liked a dessert any my partner fancied a wheat beer but we were not offered any more drinks. After about twenty minutes of waiting, we decided that enough was enough and walked out. It’s a shame because the restaurant could have made some extra money from us but they missed a golden opportunity. It was not like they were exceptionally busy. The restaurant was only half full and there were three front of house staff members on duty. When we left, two of them were standing behind the bar, seemingly doing nothing.I would summarise the experience as ‘just ok’. It would be fine if you were staying at the hotel and wanted something quick and convenient but it’s not the kind of place I would make a special trip to go to.I won’t be in a hurry to return to Jolyon’s.

I have written this posting reluctantly as I am aware of how they can appear unfairly critical and picky. However I felt it only fair to ensure others looking to eat here are aware of the potential for a poor meal. The fact it was a voucher should be immaterial. We booked a Sunday lunch for 4 with wine through Living Social and finally got to go today, 17th May. We had previously eaten in the hotel and had a thoroughly pleasant meal so the two friends we invited to come with us were also very excited especially once we knew the PM had stayed there this week. However nothing could have prepared us for the disappointment of this meal.To sum up our experience:We had tried to book for earlier in the day but were told due to bookings we couldn't eat until 3pm. We arrived at just before 3 and there were only 4 other people eating in the restaurant. We were told there was no more salmon so two of us ordered the pulled pork and two the soup. It then took over an hour for the starters to arrive. The soup was clearly from a packet as the two girls having it said it was neither parsnip soup nor home cooked as there were big lumps of gloopy powder. The pulled pork came with gravy and a salad garnish which was an unusual mixture. The bread was neither rustic nor fresh. We spoke to the staff who just shrugged their shoulders and took away the plates.Another 45 minutes later the main courses arrived again only after we had requested how long they would be. The beef was inedible scrag ends full of fat and gristle. The roast potatoes had been cooked several hours before as they were just a mush and the rest of the veg was frozen. The stuffing balls felt as hard as golf balls. One of the party had the stuffed loin of pork that was neither loin nor stuffed. Half of it was fat. The only redeeming feature was she had two hefty slices. We waited to be asked if we wanted mustard, horseradish or apple sauce to no avail. My wife then got up to speak to the bar staff and explain our complete and utter disappointment with the meal to be greeted with a shrug.. No-one came back to us at any stage and eventually we just left as we had nothing else to pay.I can only hope that they had had a meltdown in the kitchen as the ginger haired lady who took our order and seemed as if she was in charge just disappeared and the two young lads behind the bar brought us our food. If anyone who called themselves a chef served this meal they should hang their head in shame. In summary this was the worst experience we have had in a restaurant in recent memory and one that neither showed the establishment in anything other than an incredibly poor light. It has dissuaded us and our two friends from ever visiting either of the two Jolyon's premises and brought me personal embarrassment as they were my guests.I would be really interested to see what remedy they look to put in place and can only hope their chef had walked out that morning leaving you in the lurch. If this was service as normal then they let you down badly.

My partner and I ate here last Sunday (10th May). I'd bought a Living Social voucher for a two course Sunday lunch with wine but to be honest the meal was so good it would have been well worth paying the full amount for. We love quirky places to eat and the decor here didn't disappoint; and the atmosphere was cosy and relaxed. Our waiter Rudi was lovely - really friendly and accomodating - my partner can't bear roast potatoes and when she explained this he asked the chef for boiled potatoes as an alternative. The menu had a really good selection of starters, main courses and desserts - not always the case with these deals. My partner had the seafood risotto to start which she said was amazing and large enough to have been a meal in itself. I had the tomato soup with warm focaccia which was homemade and deliciously thick with herbs and roasted tomatoes. We then both had braised beef which was gorgeous. My roast potatoes were perfection and the fresh vegetable medley was very generous and contained a variety of different vegetables. As promised my partner got her boiled potatoes - phew. The gravy was really tasty and there was plenty of it. We certainly couldn't complain about the size of the portions served. This meal and the restaurant definitely exceeded our expectations and we are planning to return for our anniversary next month for an evening meal. I would recommend this resaurant to anyone who is looking for excellent quality food eaten in a friendly, welcoming and quirky environment.

My husband and I had monkfish and prawn risotto to start which was FANTASTIC! We then both had pork with crackling. The pork tasted nice but was a tiny bit dry, but the roast potatoes parsnips etc were lovely, and the fresh veg was a very generous portion and was absolutely lovely as was the gravy. My daughter had tomato soup which was herby, homemade and delicious. She had beef for her main and this she said was gorgeous... It was a large, thick piece of really tender beef...I would pick this next time! The Prosecco was wonderful too!The staff couldn't have been more helpful, the furnishings were quirky and we all liked the atmosphere there. If I see another voucher I will def buy it...but it is still good value for the full price because of the quality of the food. A friend and I had a disappointing afternoon tea here yesterday. We had bought a Living Social voucher and paid £22 for afternoon tea with Prosecco, a little more than we've paid for wonderful afternoon teas in The Angel Hotel and Parc Thistle recently. We were expecting a treat but sadly Jolyon's didn't deliver. When I booked I explained that I was vegetarian and reminded the waitress upon arrival. Despite this, when the food arrived some of the sandwiches looked as if they may contain fish but I was assured that they didn't. They did!The selection of food was disappointing compared with others that we've had and whilst there was a huge bowl of cream it tasted synthetic.

I took my Mum out for Sunday lunch for Mothers day. I had booked the meal three weeks prior and phoned to confirm the booking 2 hours before arriving. When we arrived at the restaurant I was told my two members of staff that we were not on the list but that they would make a table up for us, I explained that I had only reconfirmed the booking two hours ago but that seemed to be dismissed. We had a glass of wine, not the cleanest looking glass but more from dishwasher stains rather than being unclean. We both had the tiger prawns as a starter which was good but a little on the small side. Our main meal was very good, I had lamb shank and my Mum had the beef. When the waitress came to give us our main meal I ordered two glasses of Prosecco to which she replied 'they are £5.99 each is that ok?' I must admit I have never ever been told how much a glass of wine costs and whether I still wanted it or not in any restaurant before and I actually found it very rude and embarrassing. The restaurant itself was more of a bar, the photos on the website do make it look quite a lot better than it actually does. The tables outside were all still covered/stained from drink, no doubt from the rugby the day before but it really didn't give a great first impression. As I mentioned the main meal was very tasty, with lovely vegetables, but I don't think due to the other issues that we will be returning any time soon.

I had bought a Living Social Deal for £22 that gave afternoon tea and 2 glasses of Prosecco at Jolyons. I had been advised by a few friends that they had had the same deal and it was worth the money. What we were given totally shocked me and my partner :( Everything was just flung onto the dish with no care in the presentation. The finger sandwiches were squashed where they had been cut...... and one of the fillings was messy cheese and branston :(I have had AMAZING afternoon tea at a number of places in Cardiff but as I had bought a deal I wasn't expecting it to live up to my previous experiences. However I didn't expect it to be this bad. The picture I have attached is what the advert looked like in comparison to what we were given. We were also disappointed with the abrupt manner of the man serving behind the bar. He was quite rude and wasn't very welcoming. We didnt manage to get his name. The only good thing I have to say about this experience was that the chocolate brownie cake and cream were very nice but sadly this isn't a good enough reason for us to return.

Each experience is what you make it, an afternoon tea treat with 2 adult daughters and an old friend was a lovely late afternoon winters treat. The Prosecco was a lovely start and the tea when it arrived was well presented. Finger sandwiches were dainty and very nice, the tiered stand was loaded with scones, welsh cakes, slices of cake and dainty creamy treats at the top. The sandwiches were very nice, the welsh cakes were good, the scones were wholemeal (personal choice but not my favourite) and were solid, if thrown could be considered a weapon, we did mention this and they were replaced (warmed in the microwave so clearly the first ones spent too long in the microwave), jam and cream with the scones. The slices of cake were a bit dry and not very inspiring, the creamy treats at the top looked better than they tasted. Sat in the window and darkness fell, with great company ensured the experience was delightful, the afternoon tea was less so. Would be a lovely place for an after work drink with friends.

I purchased a Living Social voucher for afternoon tea, as I thought this would be a lovely treat for my daughter at half-term. I wish I hadn't bothered! The sandwiches were okay, pretty nondescript and nothing to write home about. The Welsh cakes needed more time on the griddle as they were uncooked in the middle and the scones ......... you could have built a wall with them! My daughter cut hers in half and the inside looked furry and stale but to the credit of the waiter he brought her a replacement, already cut in half to make sure that this wasn't the same inside. Unfortunately this tasted stale. The cakes on the top tier were both chocolate, two brownies which were rather dense and two other chocolate cakes which were quite dry. All in all, apart from the Prosecco and pot of tea, a bit of a disaster. I wished I had gone to St David's Hotel instead!

I visited Jolyon’s on 30th August 2014 with three friends for afternoon tea with a living social voucher. The voucher had cost £42 (with a £91.80 value) and promised ‘feast on a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches before indulging in delicious cake, scones and, of course, Welsh cakes -- lovingly accompanied by your choice of tea, coffee, or soft drink, and a glass of Prosecco’.The afternoon tea was terrible - nothing like the description or the photo on the voucher. None of us could quite believe what lay before us. The sandwiches looked like a 5 year old child had made them - cheap bread with no butter and a slice of cheese, another one was again unbuttered bread with a slice of salami, another one was some cheap cheese spread. The scones were rock hard and served with some cheap whipped cream not clotted cream. There were no welsh cakes. There was some sponge cake that was dry and stale, some cookies that were freely available on the bar and the mini trifle was some tinned fruit with cream on top. The top tier was decorated with halves of grapes! What was that about? A poor substitute for strawberries and it would have looked better if they had added nothing at all.It really was very shocking. We complained to the staff member who had served us. He asked if we would like to keep the voucher and come again another time. But why would we want to come again if that was what they served. The point of a voucher is to try somewhere different at a reduced price in the hope that we will like it so much we will want to come again and happily pay full price. But we were very dissatisfied and not happy that we had already paid £42 for it through the voucher. The staff member said we could have a bottle of Prosecco for free to compensate. We felt this was still not enough. We had already paid £42 for food we couldn’t eat and we were offered a £22.50 bottle of wine so that’s only half of our money back. There wasn’t much more we could do so we accepted that. But then the staff member later returned and said the manager had said we couldn’t have the bottle of wine after all! We asked to speak to the manager. We were told he was in a wedding but would come and see us when he could. 50 minutes later we were still waiting. We told the staff member we needed to leave and would be going in 5 minutes so could the manger please come and see us. Another 10 minutes and he still didn’t appear and so we left. I cannot believe that for a whole hour the manager couldn’t spare 5 minutes to come and see us. Or if he really couldn’t come and see us he could have asked the staff member to take our phone number to call us, but he clearly wasn’t interested. We were left hungry and very disappointed, and will be telling everyone to avoid this restaurant. In the future we will stick to afternoon tea in the Park Plaza or the Hilton where good quality afternoon tea is served and they respect their customers.

A special afternoon with my mother and sisters was meant to be had here, unfortunately the afternoon tea was a disgrace, at £16 a head there was barely enough to feed one person. Add to this they had no trace of our booking and tried to move us into a back room as there was a wedding on, the manager kept us waiting for an hour and still never showed up, the waiter was rude, it is not somewhere I could ever recommend. I will upload a photo taken by my sister later, save your money and done bother visiting.

During June I was responsible for running an inter professional in Pontcanna. We had initially had another venue booked for food, but we were let down last minute. I got in touch with Carl their events manager to dig me out of a hole on a set budget. I have to say that Carl and his team were excellent, in putting together a menu and drinks package and offering exclusive use of a room. When the night came the 100% delivered on the service and quality of food and the venue was excellent! In hindsight I was delighted the previous venue had doubled booked my event as they would not have come close the matching Jolyons No.10!

Went there for a retirement do which they totally ruined. I was told the day before that the kitchen usually closes at 2, but we'd be okay to order at 2. The waitress was advised twice that we were ready to order, in the end we took the order to her. In the mean time we were told that we could buy 1/2 a bitter, but would have to pay for a pint as she didn't know how to put 1/2 through the till(?) - after 40 minutes, we were advised that the risotto, ordered by 2 of our party was off the menu, so they both chose fish & chips as a replacement, one of our party had already ordered this. All the meals came after an hours wait, but we were brought 3 "posh" fish finger sandwiches instead. We said there'd been a mistake and she took them away, coming back 5 minutes later to say the chef had gone home. We were offered no replacement or even an apology, but as we were hungry, we asked for the sandwiches to be returned. When complaining to the manager, the waitress said that fish finger sandwiches is the same as fish and chips - "know what I mean". We didn't have to pay for them, but there was still no apology and we left early, The food is overpriced, lacks flavour and the bar is run incompetently with no customer service - I will not return

Although this boutique hotel’s bar is a pretty grubby place to eat, H had a very enjoyable LivingSocial deal afternoon tea with Prosecco back in summer last year, so we bought another one when Jolyons renewed the deal this winter/spring. We wish we hadn’t bothered. The Prosecco was almost flat. The finger sandwiches weren’t particularly fresh and most had the cheapest possible fillings. A couple of the small cake slices had been cut in two so it would look like there was a portion each. Cheapskates. H said the original offer last year was so much better – the hotel had obviously cut their costs for this deal to the bone. We know Jolyon’s aren’t going to make much if any money from these type of group deals but it’s their choice to do so and realistically, when we were there, if it hadn’t been for the 4 tables of afternoon teas with vouchers, the place would only have had two customers. Based on this latest experience, it’s not somewhere we’d return, even with a deal voucher.

Nice decor inside the pub. However, on dropping by last Sunday we were disappointed to find that they were fully booked for dinner (despite a number of empty tables?). We had a drink, it was OK, but the wine was nothing special, almost £8 for two medium glasses of Merlot. We would have stayed longer, but we were hungry and needed to find somewhere to eat.

My husband and I booked a two course meal for two with a glass of prosecco each on a Groupon voucher at Jolyons, we decided on a Sunday lunchtime and we were very impressed. It was quiet, but we preferred that to it being overly busy, the staff were friendly and attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The decor was old fashioned shabby chic with a touch of antique French feel about it, very nice all in all.We could order two courses from 3 in the offer and we both decided on a starter and main. I ordered the queen scallops and prawns with crusty bread and my husband ordered the leek and potato soup with chorizo and crusty bread. Both starters were a really good portion size and delicious. For main we had lamb shank and roast pork with trimmings. Presented very nicely with fractal cauliflower floret, green beans, roast parsnip, boiled new potatoes, roast potatoes, carrots, Yorkshire pudding and delicious gravy. I asked for some mint sauce and in no time at all a portion of sauce in a ramekin with a spoon arrived. The lamb was so tender it literally fell off the bone, and the pork was moist and well cooked. I only wish there could have been just a sliver of pork crackling on top, that really would have pleased me!Again really good sized portions that really were delicious and very filling, we both enjoyed our meals very much and would certainly entertain a return visit. Food, surroundings and staff were all really rather good.

I recently had the pleasure of eating at Jolyons at No. 10 upstairs restaurant with amazing views over Sophia gardens.I dined on seabass, beautifully cooked and presented while my partner ordered the lamb shank. As I only ever order fish when dining out, I could make a fair comparison and this was undoubtedly the best sea bass and combination of flavours I have ever tasted. The service was professional, friendly and our waiter was very attentive. The restaurant is tastefully furnished in a modern minimilistic design and its location in the trees has a feel of you really being part of the park. Apparently the upstairs restaurant is only open when the downstairs bar is fully booked, but well worth a telephone call to see if open as the location adds to the customer experience.

Came here with my husband after having been given a groupon voucher as a present. Small and intimate restaurant with the bar attached. We both ordered the prawn and baby squid to start which was very good. My husband ordered the steak with a Diane sauce and chips, I ordered the lamb shank, both were really well presented and tasted nice. The only minor negatives were that my husbands chips looked a bit insipid and were not crispy and my mash was not seasoned. Was good value as a groupon deal.

I visited this restaurant as a group of 12 people on 24 February for a birthday celebration. The age range of the group was from 7 years to mid seventies. Waited 1 hour 20 minutes for starters, a further 45 minutes for the main course, which was eventually served at 10pm and was cold. The attitude of the staff was disgusting, with no apologies and no explanation as to why we had to wait so long. There were only two other tables of 2 in the bar area, so they weren't exactly rushed off their feet! To make anyone wait so long for food is unacceptable, but to leave a 7 year old wait so long is disgusting. I will not not be returning. If you want a good restaurant with pleasant surroundings, good food and welcoming staff - DO NOT GO HERE.

To be completely honest I have never written a review on here before but after visiting here last night, I felt obliged to give these guys some credit where credit is due. I visited here with the boyfriend for a mid week date night after recently buying a voucher on groupon. The voucher included a two course meal for two with a glass of prosecco each for 20 quid so to be honest, my overall expectations were not the highest but hey for 20 quid you gotta give it a go right?! I was actually pleasantly surprised when we turned up, I had never been there before and upon entering the bar it was exactly how I would expect a place with the word "Cwtch" in the title to look, it was Cwtchy! I get for some peoples tastes it may be a little dark but for me it was just perfect, fairly small bar area with a few tables scattered around with lovely chairs and dim lighting. A perfect date night setting, lovely and intimate! Whilst we did have quite a long wait for both courses, the two staff (who were obviously run off their feet on a busy night) were constantly apologising and checking we were ok. When the food did arrive, I found it to be worth the wait. I'm fairly sure that I had the same chicken that the person below me has described, maybe they visited on a bad day or maybe I was slightly tipsy from the prosecco, but I found it absolutely gorgeous. The chicken in the sauce was beautiful and the chips were thick tasty home cooked chips. Upon ending our evening the boyfriend went to settle the rest of the bill as we had extra drinks, to find out that the drinks were complimentary as we had had to wait for our food! A gesture that they didn't have to do as we had enjoyed our evening there anyway but still, it was an added bonus!

Visited with friends recently following a recommendation. What a disappointment. 45 minutes to get a starter and a further hour to get the main meal. Hand cut chips turned out to be a few burnt 'McDonald' fries, Swede mash, was the same burnt 'McDonald' fries and the Chicken in a sauce was an overcooked breast of chicken sprinkled with her. The atmosphere was awful, it was pouring and blowing a gale outside and instead of a warm welcome with a roaring fire, it smouldered behind the glass and the room was more like a dungeon that a 'Cwtch'. The presence of electricians hovering back and forth was totally unwelcome too. best avoided until they get their act together. The only redeeming feature was the lovely Spanish waitress, who was polite and helpful and highly embarrassed by the 'fawlty towers' antics.

I ate with a friend at Jolyons bar with a voucher. The voucher was actually for a pizza at their Cwtch bar down the bay but that place was closed and so No.10 honoured the voucher. As No. 10 don't do pizzas we were offered a mezze platter to share. To be honest the person who tool the original booking was fairly rude, i sensed at the time that they weren't too happy about the vouchers. On arrival we were just waved in the general direction of some empty tables and after a few minutes someone came to take our order. When i asked what was on the mezze platter the waiter just pointed to a nearby table and told me it would look a bit like that. There was no asking whether we were vegetarian or if we had any dietary requirements. When it arrived it had 6 mezze - the olives, hummous and roast tomatoes were ok, the cheese was average and the huge hunks of cheap salami and processed 'meatballs' (ikea?) were frankly revolting.I did comment that it wasn't very nice to the waiter but he didn't seem to be bothered. Shame, because with a bit more enthusiasm we may have ended up ordering some extra dishes off the menu and probably a dessert. Why did they bother to honour the vouchers? I won't be going back and i won't be recommending it.

The cwtch (cuddle) thing didn't make much sense when I read it. That is until you get there and then it does. Warm wood, opulent comfy seating and ornate chandelier lighting all make for a very pleasant ambience. The food is outstanding and largely influenced by fantastically fresh welsh produce. Hard to choose between so many enticing choices. Decided on the bass with tiny local clams; simply delicious. We'd be regulars if it were closer!

If this just sounds like a moan - please don't think that - it was really unprofessional and sullied an otherwise nice Summer evening out.During the Everyman production of Guys and Dolls in Sofia Gardens, Cardiff, Jolyons at No 10 is / was advertised as the festival bar. This review concerns the venue as a pre-theatre and interval bar.Jolyon's staff did not seem to understand the concept of interval drinks. It was such a disappointment. I ordered interval drinks to be met with a blank face, a series of queries to another perplexed member of staff - and at the interval, the drinks were not ready - and had to be poured out after more confusion, and waiting. Not only that, but patrons entered the bar (about 30+) and gathered around with little chance of being served in the interval time. There were 2 staff on, who did well given their situation. I went to the production again a few days later, on the Saturday. Sadly, it was even worse. Nothing had been learned during the show's run, my request for an interval drink was met with the same confusion, so many patrons stood around waiting in vain to be served, and it was totally over-crowded given a private function on that night. Staff seemed to be unprepared and overwhelmed. But to top it all, one of the staff was rude to my partner after he complained, saying "don't worry you'll get your drink!" .I can't comment about this venue as a hotel or a restaurant - but as a festival bar (and advertised as such) it was a total wash -out. Jolyon's might have taken the opportunity to win new custom and promote itself - it's a shame that it had the opposite impact. I will not return to this venue.

Called in Jolyons @ No. 10 on Friday evening for a drink and possibly food but were sorely disappointed with the venue. There was only one member of bar staff working and he was rushed of his feet. There appeared to other staff members there but i'm not sure what they were doing.Although the Venue is relatively new, it already looked tired and dated. This wasn't helped by the amount of dirty empty glasses around. We had previoulsy been in The Cricketers on Cathedral Road which was well staffed with a great atmosphere, so we decided to have one drink and return there to eat.Jolyons just seemed poorly run and under staffed.

Booked after purchasing a living social voucher. Very busy when we arrived, service excellent, food very good. Minor irritation, seating far too close together to have a private conversation. Limited choice of food, struggled to find something I wanted from the choice of mains. That said, I had the lamb which was very good. It could have done with a larger serving of mash and veg but it was nice. I would not go back based on the experience we had, there are eateries of equal standard offering a much wider selection of dishes.
