Curry King, Cambridge in Cambridge

I took my family, party of seven for a curry here. Firstly the food. Food. Hot and cooked well. Most of us all had different dishes but I tried them all and they were all fairly bland with similar flavours. especially the Dhansak, Korma and Chicken Tikka Masala. Utensils: Clean but the plates were all stained and the cutlery was very old. The salt pot metal top was rotten/corroded and fell into my wife's dinner. The Building: Very run down. The Mens toilet was grim with the enamel missing from the toilet pan and you walk through a run down part of the building which is freezing on the 1st floor. The staff. One cook, one waiter. Very nice chap in a decorators overall. He serves both drinks and food and the wait is longer than expected. Overall experience and the bill. The cost of the food would be okay if it tasted better. The tip which is shown but well hidden is 15%!!! I thought this was very high for the experience we had. I will never go again but paid the bill as respected the chap serving. Overall, very disappointing. I would recommend the Curry Queen on Mill Road.

We weren’t sure about eating here at first as the place was completely devoid of customers when we arrived, however the staff member was extremely attentive and friendly and we did all enjoy our meal. All the place lacked was any atmosphere which I’m sure would have improved had we not been their only customers.

Attentive staff, quick service and a lamb bhuna that is not to be missed! Bit tucked away but a real hidden gem well worth a visit. Simply smashing!

A great little find in the centre of the town. We were a party of 8 and two of us don't drink so the manager let us bring in our own Alcohol Free beers which was great. Food was good and given the team were rushed off their feet the service was also very good. Would recommend for sure.

Came here for a meal and it was very quiet so weren’t sure what to expect. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was lovely and recommendations were great. They boxed up Our leftovers with extra rice so we had snacks for later. Fabulous, can’t recommend enough!!

We went to Curry King on a recent trip to Cambridge (August 2022). It was a very pleasant meal, delightful ambience and delicious food. They are recovering from all the COVID shutdowns so the menu wasn't as extensive and it would normally be. That said, everything we ate was wonderful, the restaurant was immaculately clean and the host (owner) was very attentive. This is a good place to go for something a little upscale in Cambridge.

I tried the curry king because so many Restaurants close their kitchens so early! After the first try I went back three times that week! From the friendly service, to the yummy food it was an excellent experience.

We stumbled upon this restaurant by accident, seen from the pub we were having a drink in whilst deciding where to eat. We were not disappointed, the food was very fresh, tasty and not your average menu. The service was second to none, would definitely recommend and would call again when we're next visiting from Cheshire. Lovely to hear the history of the Curry King.

I have visited 'Curry King' on numerous occasions, over several years, when working at Cambridge Arts Theatre. Always a warm, friendly welcome. Delicious food, fantastic service in a relaxed atmosphere. A firm favourite, and I always look forward to returning.

We were looking around and decided on this place due to surrounding pubs all offering the same limited fayre: burger, fish and chips, lasagne, pie. It's off the main street down an alley which I think must harm their passing trade a little. But I'm glad we opted to visit. We chatted a lot to Ali as he served us and got some history of the establishment. He was very welcoming and happy to accommodate ordering off menu, given the slightly restricted menu now on offer after the pandemic. Rizza also served us and was equally as pleasant if a little less talkative than Ali. The food was good and well flavoured with heat to the dishes that needed it. No overuse of food colourings. Just tasty curry cooked well. You won't get fine dining surroundings here. But in my experience they aren't a good barometer of receiving a quality curry. We'll definitely eat at this restaurant again.

Very tasty food and 5 star service! This is my favourite Indian restaurant in Cambridge. I’ve come here many times over the years and it never disappointed. The owners are exceptionally lovely, polite, considerate, and friendly. Today, we came in just for a casual meal and they were very helpful in recommending some dishes on the menu, which I loved and would 100% try again (I had chicken sizzler curry, mushroom rice and garlic naan, and my partner had coconut chicken curry, chickpea rice and coconut naan, which he also loved). Overall, I’m very happy and will keep coming back here :)

Petites portions de qualité moyenne et trop cher ! 3£ 50 pour un nan au fromage tout petit sans fromage ! Serveur sympa avec nous pour mieux nous arnaquer ! 14 % de services charges mis sur l'addition non annoncés au départ qui soit disant se pratique par les restaurateurs...Cela laisse une très mauvaise impression qui gache les quelques points qui auraient pu être positifs !

Wir waren zu Mittag - die ganze Zeit völlig alleine - in diesem Restaurant. Das Essen war o.k., aber nicht besonders. Der Rechnungsbetrag war dann aber um ca. 30 % höher, als sie gemäß Menükarte sein hätte sollen - eine Prüfung nicht möglich, da der Kellner sich weigerte, die Rechnung zu zeigen. Eine Gaunerei, aber wir wollten nicht herumstreiten und sind etwas verärgert gegangen. Nun wissen wir aber, warum wir die einzigen im Restaurant waren.

The food was good, but the prices on the bill didn’t match the menu (the waiter said he decided to bring us larger portions because we wanted to share) and a 23% tip (!) was added without our permission. Frustrating.

Just a terrible terrible place, food took 2 hours to come, when it came there were hairs in it, staff were rude 0/10 would not recommend

Booked in advance for a large party. All food came as ordered, and most of us enjoyed our dishes. Service adequate. But then we were moved because some large group of students arrived and the restaurant wanted to seat the new group - we were moved to a far less adequate space, we needed extra chairs, we needed to bring our food and belongings. In the end the bill came to significantly higher than anyone expected; when queried were unable to produce receipts. Could not account for higher pay and kept getting put onto different people when complaining. Had to pay and leave. Rude, stand-offish behaviour. The place is far more concerned with cramming in students for swaps than providing good service to customers. Nonetheless, staff tried their best and were friendly and curteous in spite of this. Me and my 12 guests will not be returning.

This place reminded me of Indian restaurants in the early days. Odd decor - a dominating bar and service. food was good and tasty. Some elements were a little odd as the nam bread and all in all acceptable.

A 23 invitados, luego de recibir órdenes, se les pidió que bajaran las escaleras, ya que se estaban metiendo en una fiesta de copas y querían a todos los de arriba para ellos, la planta de abajo estaba muy apretada y los servicios estaban descuidados y algunas órdenes se confundieron, después de que cada una se fue había una factura propia, había un déficit de 140 que se esperaba que pagara la persona que reservaba la fiesta, cuando se cuestionaba la factura, no había facturas individuales, o una indicación de quién pagaba qué, cuando se notaba más de 50 cargos por servicio, y se quejaba de un servicio deficiente, dijeron que era obligatorio según lo acordado por teléfono y se negaron a eliminar o reducir.

The chicken tastes a bit like savlon and service was awful. We were ignored from the get go and the portions were ridiculous. They are tucked away down an alley and I can see why. Will not go back Gordon ramseys head would explode if he visited.

We ordered chicken & prawn biriyani for lunch. Prawn biriyani was filled with prawns, worth the price of £8.60. Chicken biriyani also was good, served along with a curry. Overall meal was great. But we ordered Orange juice £2.60 , but we disappointed coz they served Sainsbury juice. Anyway we enjoyed the meal.

Teníamos papadams y chutneys que eran mejores que la mayoría, cebollas cortadas en roja, caliente y dulce de mango mango y cebollas cortadas en blanco. El naan de ajo era perfecto, chana masala, pollo al curry que era lo suficientemente suave para mi hija y mi favorito, el cordero, que fue ceilán la cantidad perfecta de calor. La comida era realmente maravilloso y los precios no estaban mal, a unos 6 - 8 libras por plato. La única queja que tuvimos fue que el restaurante estaba vacío y el camarero nos hizo incómoda con su cercanía. Nunca salimos de la habitación y nunca tomó su ojos de nosotros. Era extraño, quizás era sólo estar atento pero senti que estaba preocupado sin cenar y guión.

Having wandered around Cambridge in the pouring rain on a Saturday evening ( parking in Cambridge is appalling) for about 30 minutes trying to find a pub, we managed to get seated in one not too far from the restaurant. We had 2 drinks and then made our way to Curry Kings at about 21:30 to find it sparsely populated, this was good as we were hungry and still a bit damp.

Great menu but the Dopiaza was soooo dull. The Pilau rice was wet. Cannot remember the last time a bill had a service charge on. Got moved to accommodate a larger group.Not impressed.

So delicious! The naan was crispy and had the Mardras and dopiaza ! Very flavorful the right amount of spice

We were on Bridge Street enjoying an evening out and decided we wanted something to eat. There are lots of places to choose from but we fancied an Indian. we spotted a sign for Curry King and decided to take a look.

Really friendly staff. Would recommend to anybody who likes Indian cuisine. Loads of dishes and great curry.

We celebrated a surprise party of 15 for a 62nd birthday...The staff were absolutely amazing and the food we could not fault...we will be coming back..Thank you so much for making a memorable evening to all the staff involved.

My husband and I have been here for dinner twice, once as a couple, once with family. Both times, the service was excellent and the food was exceptional. The food is prepared from fresh and, as such, takes a little longer, but it is well worth the wait.

Living as we do in a village at the far northwest end of Cambridgeshire, my wife and I visit Cambridge itself several times a year for shopping, and most times have lunch at the Curry King. In marked contrast to some of the reviews I have seen, we have always found our reception and subsequent service friendly and delightful. Located in a little passageway from the Park Street (Jesus Lane) car park which exits onto Bridge Street next to Bella Italia, there is always plenty of space for lunch.

What can I say. Do not come here.

Pedimos un pollo tikka dansak y un cordero al vindaloo, que estaba muy bien, puedes probar todas las especias y tuvimos una agradable sabor fresco. Nos pareció que estaba un poco escondido en el centro de Cambridge y vale la pena una visita. No dudaría en volver.

Booked for a party of 50, arrived at 9pm but they had triple booked us with another group of around 40 and another large group. We waited outside until 9.50pm while the manager constantly reassured us that we would only have to wait 'just 5 more minutes'. Ultimately we gave up and made a large dominoes order. Would not recommend, avoid at all costs.

The managers here don't seem to think students deserve fair customer treatment: They double booked our group with another and failed to make the group before us leave to make space for the 2 (!!) new groups (although probably not even our own group would've fit in that room, they declared more space than they actually had). We stood waiting outside for one hour, waiting for the previous group to leave or to get our deposit back (which the restaurant point-blank refused). Only sending in a big guy eventually at least got us our money back.From other students' stories of previous bookings it seems that Curry King routinely double book or overlap bookings of student groups, counting on one group cancelling/not showing up/grudgingly leaving and them being able to keep the deposit. Seriously, don't support this business.

the manager was incredibly rude (he told one of our party to f*** himself) and we had to share chairs because they had over booked. literally the worst restaurant that has ever existed.

Quiet little place tucked away but worth seeking out. Staff helpful and willing to modify the menu to suit individual tastes.

Stopped by here on a chance and enjoyed my meal very much. The restaurant was clean and bright, the service was friendly and efficient, if a little reserved. I enjoyed the large selection of cuisine on the menu and was happy with the quality of my choices. I would definitely go here again and recommend it.

Fresh ingredients and a lot of options which work well for somebody like me who does not like it very spicy (apparently also options for those who do). The service was friendly and welcoming.

We had a warm welcome by the 85 year old ex-boss and his son who is in charge now. Service and advice about what to choose and what combinations to make were great. The food was very tasteful and well prepared. The curry and the vegetable-dishes were great and complemented the grill-dish.The chutnies were wonderfully rich in taste.Great value for money.Adequate service and friendly advice. First time I came here for dinner with my friends, and that is a really impressing dinner.I had a chicken something, I just forget how to spell the "v" word, and that is really really hot.And that curry nang is just so nice.Two days later I came here for dinner alone. This time the owner recommend a kind of prawn cuisine for me( don't know how to spell again) and again that is really nice.

We went for lunch, it wasn't good at all. We ordered few curry dish and some rich and nan. All dish look like same and test same and sour. Place look like a cafe and there is not enough staff and one waiter just running bz there is more few table. We didn't enjoy our lunch!! We never gonna be come back again.

When we visited Cambridge last year, we tried this restaurant and loved it, we met the owner's son who manages the restaurant and he was very personable and made us feel at home. Then we went back again this year and it was as if it was just yesterday that we were there last. He (now we know his name is Rana) made us feel right at home again. My husband ordered the Tandoori chicken, it was still sizzling for two minutes after it was served. It was filled with glazed onions and hurbs and spices. I ordered two vegetarian dishes (aloo gobi/Cauliflower and potatoes and sag/spinach) they were really good. This is a very classy family run restaurant, with food that tastes homemade. We will make this place our family tradition whenever we visit Cambridge.

having eating indian food in many cities, this place is a very solid choice! the portions were plentiful. the cauliflower bhajia was cooked very nicely, soft but not greasy or mushy. the chicken tikka masala was excellent, navratan korma also very good. staff was very kind, service was quick, poppadoms came on the house on our 2nd and 3rd visits during the 2-wk period we were in town. the menu is enormous! eat here you won't be disappointed. location is super easy on one of the main drags, though restaurant is set back from the street so it's nice and quiet. great food and great experience overall!

Highly recommended, an excellent location within the city center, car parking very close and conveniently situated near tourist points of interest and the river. Staff were welcoming and friendly, the menu offered a vast choice at reasonable prices. Food arrived well presented with ample portions and was spiced to perfection as expected from a well established Indian restaurant. Well worth visiting if you are local to Cambridge or visiting for the day and are looking for good Indian food.

Looking for something to eat that was tasty and get out of the rain, I dropped in here and asked if I could just have a couple of starters. The manager said they would not do it normally but yes ok.You are guided to this restaurant by a sign on the street and it is positioned between two alleys. It did not feel like an Indian restaurant more like a café , the restaurant has an upstairs and downstairs. My first impressions were not good as every single free table was still covered in plates and glasses from the previous patrons. Not very inviting, however they did find me a table , cleared it and put on a new topper, no clean table cloth. I asked for a coke and this was served from large pop bottle and flat.I had pappadum and chutney and onion bhajis. The poppadums were lovely, not flat and round but all broken and curly and nicely presented , they were fresh. The chutney tray was ok as were the bhajis but nothing special. The price was reasonable but I would look for an indian restaurant with a nicer ambience and clean tables next time.

Excellent food, this restaurant deserves to go in this little street near from the Cam. It was the first time I was trying Indian food, and I definitely like this kind of food. Very nice atmosphere ! I recommend it !

When you look at the evaluations of this restaurant you get the sensation that it's either loved or hated, no in-betweens. However, the favorable opinions roughly outnumber the bad by double. While I was in a Cambridge (a Portuguese tourist) I had a try, by pure chance I might add. However it was a very good find. As someone who has eaten real Indian food (not fast food replicas) ....this place is the real thing. It's more of a northern India cousine (not as sweat as the south).So, if it's authentic food as if in India itself.... this is the place to go. But, you you prefer niceties and the refined touch, go pay for it someplace else.The King is reasonably priced excellent authentic Indian food, no more no less.I highly recommend it to the conossour of spices and treats of India.

Deplorable place. If I've had a worse restaurant experience in my lifetime then I can't recall it. It was probably on a par with the time I had salmonella poisoning. Not a single member of our party had more than 2 pieces of meat, the staff were outrageously obnoxious and the decor was underwhelming. Only redeeming feature was the cutlery which was functional.

This is truly the worst restaurant I have ever visited. We had book Curry King for a school reunion meal with some old friends as this place was the only one with enough space. We were forced to sit upstairs at tables with filthy table clothes I would not feed my dog off. We were then only given a set menu option and charged £15 (only in cash so they can avoid tax) up front, despite the fact the same meal would have only cost £11 from the normal menu - yet the waiter was adamant he was doing us a 'deal'. When we questioned him on this he became aggressive and started bragging about the fact he already had our deposit.When the food eventually arrived it was pathetic. I have regurgitated nicer looking dishes than my chicken kurma, the rice was overcooked but the naan was actually ok. When we had finished eating the waiters immediately kicked us out, this was very upsetting as we had planned to sit and catch up with friends. Overall a very unpleasant experience, something I reminded of the next morning as I had to spend several hours on the toilet with what I think is food poisoning.

Visited for a weekday lunch and had a super time. Not sure the waiter understood much English but we managed. Main courses, desserts and bottle of wine for £50 so really pleased. Just wish they had a CD cleaner to stop it juddering! Will certainly return.

The beer and papadums were ok, but currys and rice is shocking bad, the worst I've had in a restaurant, there was 5 in our party and no one enjoyed or finished the food. We had 5 different dishes witch all tasted the same (bad). Even the waiters didn't know witch was witch.We go for curry every Thursday wherever we are working and this is the worst I've ever had.Portions where very small and the chips were just burnt oven chips A rice came about 10 minutes after we started eating I've had much better supermarket currys.They should be embarrassed to serve this slop.Do not be tempted to eat here.

Upon arriving My wife and I were greeted by a well dressed gentleman who proceeded to give us excellent service throughout the night. I ordered the prawn vindaloo- wow- it was an explosion of sensations on my palet. The keema naan was nice and tender. To sum up this place in one word, I would say it was really good. The best Indian restaurant in Cambridge and has been for the past 17 years I have been visiting. Excellent value for money and faultless service.

If this place is the 'Curry King' then the 'King' is well and truly dead.This is one the the worst Curry's I have had and I've had a few! Not only is the food dire, the service was poor and the meal was relatively expensive - but to really add insult they also charge you a 10% service charge that's Non Negotiable - I couldn't be bothered to argue, unlike two others tables that had tried during my meal...AVOID and head out to Mill Road and try either Prana or Golden Curry - they are both a million times better!

We went on a recommendation and unfortunately were disappointed . Maybe the restaurant were having an off night the service was fine, but the food was poor and basic. I am sure there must be better Indian restaurants in Cambridge

We have been Curry King last Saturday with friends, it was very busy and the waiters are very good and service was excellent. We have been enjoying our time. Definitely come back.
