Stayed once again with a group of friends. Friendly staff always received with a welcome. Rooms are clean with a refreshment tray supplied with additional items available in the library area so you can always have a cuppa or coffee in your room at any time. This stay we had the afternoon tea which was on offer via Groupon. I have to say it was probably the best I have been served. Highly recommend. A lovely spot with a walk down the coastal path down to the town and station. We all love the hotel, full of character and friendly staff. We shall be back

I used to give this place 4 or 5 stars but they've gone pet friendly so there could have been a dog in your room the night before. As I'm allergic to dogs, that's not great. Also dogs we're barking and padding round in the room above all night. We asked if some rooms were kept dog free but they said it could be any room. A real shame as we loved to visit this place. We've just been back and I must say even with the dogs (I only actually saw one!) it was much improved. It looks like everywhere has been decorated and the bathrooms updated. Staff great as usual. The food was plentiful and good. The room was small but adequate. We will certainly be returning more often.

Receptionists didn’t seem overly bothered or helpful. The room was disgusting, dust everywhere, stains and wallpaper falling off. Bed was uncomfortable. Toilet didn’t flush and was stained, linen on beds stained and smelt funny. Damp on windows and in shower. The shower gel provided had no cap. Very noisy, you could hear upstairs, we got woken up multiple times in the night. Overall disappointing

Booked 3 nights here. Staff were lovely, food was nice and a good choice. Great having a carvery each night. We had a superior room but not very superior sadly. Small double bed, bathroom door didn’t even have a catch to close the door, there was just a hole where the catch should be. Window drafty so used the bolster pillows to push up against the curtains. Door frame had a large split in it. It’s clear they are doing refurbishments to the hotel, some windows in the dining room had been replaced with double glazing but it’s true what previous reviews say that the hotel looks a bit tired and it needs a makeiver. Bat area nice, there was a singer the first night but nothing for the other two nights so very quiet. We played cards but it would have been great if the hotel had put something on like a quiz night, bingo or even sometime talking about local sights to visit. Definitely think they’re missing an opportunity there. However we enjoyed our break in the Lake District and are going back later in the year but to a different hotel

Really enjoyed our stay at the Grand and look forward to staying again in the future. My only complaint would be that the food wasn't hot enough but you get that with a carvery. The starters and desserts were exceptional

I stayed at this hotel before winter. It was converted from a mansion into a hotel. Everything is very nostalgic. The carpets and decoration are very old-style. The room is opened with a key. The room is very standard, and the hot water for bathing is sufficient. There are The scenery is beautiful and there is a long beach. Before dinner, we went to the beach to watch the sunset. The natural scenery is really spectacular. You can enjoy the scenery along the pedestrian corridor and enjoy the sea breeze. There is a train station, paid restrooms, and you can go back to the hotel for dinner after arriving in the city center. The main meal is available You can choose beef, fish or pork. You can choose from 5 types of side dishes. They are quite rich and the food is also very good. I am very satisfied. However, this hotel lacks recreational facilities, but it is good for those who want to enjoy a peaceful vacation.

Rooms were dated but dont mind that myself. Staff were excellent even made us a packed lunch each day as we were leaving for work before breakfast started. Had food in the bar area which was delicious had the salt and pepper halloumi starter both nights as it was 10/10

Rooms very shabby, torn, dirty curtains. Bathroom mat mouldy. Carpets dirty. Myself and a friend paid extra for single rooms. Also lights not working in one of the rooms. Food was reasonable but the dining room was run like a boarding school dining room. We had to share with complete strangers, no tables for two! All in all very disappointing. None of the problems reported were dealt with. We would not return. There is lack of investment here.

We loved it, we were transported to another era. The hotel is a little in its original state but that's what gives it its charm. The dinner was delicious and the staff welcoming. The place is magnificent and I recommend the evening stroll to the pretty little station.

Positives Gret history, love the external look and style, drive up to the hotel was lovely and plenty of parking space. Breakfast had your typical options and tasted great. Staff were helpful and tended to every need. Negatives Inside looked dated and gave the feeling of disrepair. The look reminded me of seaside hotels in the 90's. If you don't mind that feel then this would be a great option. My room had no usb charging ports so make sure to take your power plugs with you. Another annoying issue was the peacock on the grounds. It would squak at night and early hours of the morning and made it very hard to sleep but also disturbed sleep. Overall my experience was Ok/acceptable, would I stay here again? No

If you enjoy old architecture and building with history and presence then this is one to add to your list. The building and grounds are stunning. Breakfast was excellent, staff were all professional, pleasant, smiling and willing to help with questions/requests. Note this is a very big building and a little run down in places, I have no doubt that for some this would be something to complain about. So, it you want completely polished perfect decor, stay elsewhere. If you want character, atmosphere and magnificence, stay here. We loved it and will stay again.

Just popped in for coffee. Good friendly service and very nice coffee, priced as you would find elsewhere. Didn't eat but the display of pies and cakes looked tempting. Gluten free cakes available as well.

Good, old fashioned tea room. Warm and cosy. Good tea in a massive tea pot. Excellent toasted tea cake. In contrast to some of the recent reviews, we found them very friendly (and have on previous visits). It is up for sale. Hope the new owners don't change it too much!

Not what I expected. WiFi was only available in the bar area and not at all in the room and the bar area was only available for very limited hours. I'm not the first to write a review complaining about WiFi, but clearly the owners have taken no heed. Hot water was tepid when we arrived mid afternoon. Asked staff about both wifi and hot water, was told that they would check. Didn't happen. While the hotel is well-located, the bed comfortable and the room clean the poor facilities and service leave me no choice but to warn potential guests to think again before booking here

We were a large party of 12 but unfortunately no-one can book a table on a Sunday! This is rare these days as people like to plan their mel times. We knew this is advance as we had been before. We waited for a short while and then the table was ready. This wasn't 1 table but we were spread across 3 separate tables which couldn't be put together and some had to sit elsewhere. This happened last time and this time we thought they would only allocate eating when it was ready for the whole party. Most went for the carvery. The vegetables were very good and the turkey really moist but the beef was so tough that you really needed a steak knife to cut through it. Overall a disappointing experience based upon the service, food quality and price/value for money.
