The food and service were fantastic, and as it was a lovely day we ate in the will wonderful beer garden……we also have a few “allergy” issues to deal with, and the team have all the info you need, and were also really flexible about making changes where they could to accommodate us…..100% get down there!!!

I took my niece for lunch here today. I was very impressed with the lovely decor and surroundings. However, the sun was shining so we decided to eat al fresco. The garden is beautiful, with plenty of seating area and table service. The staff were really friendly and polite and our food was delicious. We both had the Sirloin steak and chunky chips. The steak was cooked to perfection. The overall experience was fabulous. I will definitely be returning and I would honestly recommend this beautiful little gem in Penn. Thank you for a lovely lunch Karen

So disappointing. My friends had reserved a specific table which when we arrived was not available so we were seated in dining room. Incredibly noisy. Menu choice very limited. When we visited last time there was a ‘specials’ menu and much more varied choice on main menu. My beef burger was dry - I wasn’t asked how I wanted it cooked. Chips were cold. Our waiter did say he would tell the kitchen. As I said. Unnecessarily disappointing.

I booked this restaurant for my Nans birthday along with my Grandad, Father and immediate family as I live locally in Penn. Hearing the establishment had recently been refurbished we were keen to try the new venue. Unfortunately I couldn’t have been more disappointed and shall not be recommending to others. The service was very slow throughout due to understaffing. When our meals finally came out no veg and a missing roast chicken didn’t come out until we asked for it and things were starting to go cold. My father’s burger was disappointing and looked like a kids meal from McDonald’s for £18.50!! He spoke to the manager and his response was “ that’s how we make it “. Everyone was uneasy throughout the meal, which was the polar opposite to how we imagined it would be. I have read the bulk of the reviews there is a clear transparency in all of the things above. It’s on you to thrive or survive. People will pay money for quality, they won’t forget a bad experience. I looked around the room and there was a real unrest in there faces that they had had a very similar experience.

We ate here for lunch on 28th February prior to going to Heathrow for an international flight. My wife ordered the Charlotte and Heritage Tomato Tarte Tatin. I ordered a burger. The tarte tatin was inedible! The pastry, which should have been firm and crisp was a soggy wet mess. The tomato element consisted of a green tomato plonked in the middle of it. When she remarked to our waiter that it wasn’t good he shrugged and walked away. This was served with a side of supposedly rosemary salted fries, with not a hint of rosemary whatsoever. My burger was ordinary, dry ground beef, not very flavoursome and my fries were also devoid of any rosemary flavour. We were very disappointed and will not be eating there again.

I wanted him to come and check up on my table every 5 seconds. He made me feel well taken care of and slightly aroused. I wish I could take him home with me, maybe they can put him on the menu next. The Crown is a lovely pub with 'olde' style decor and features - internal wooden beams, small door ways, and single glazed windows. While we came in February, the large garden would definitely see us return in the summer. Food wise, it did the job. There were 5 of us having a roast, so I was confused when 3 bowls root veg, and cauliflower cheese came out. Obviously we were to share, but portion wise it seemed small. Each roast is described as coming with a sauce i.e beef came with horseradish cream, chicken with bread sauce, and pork with apple sauce. Alas, they didn't come with anything and when I asked for the horseradish they said it didnt come with it, you have to ask for it - which can't be right. I was given a pot of horseradish in the end - unsure if it's the horseradish cream promoted. Being a Sunday, it was somewhat busy, and it showed on the staff as everyone was a bit stonefaced. Hopefully they cheer up in the summer. I'd recommend coming here for a bite with friends for sure, the place does have quite a historic atmosphere about it and the roast was acceptable. Beyond the roast, there were some tasty looking dishes on the menu which I'd be keen to try.

Party of 6 plus toddler for Sunday lunch. We were greeted at the door warmly but told we would be squeezed onto our table which isn't really the most welcoming way of introducing the restaurant. Menu was mainly roasts and a few extras, selection was pretty good and what youd want from a nice weekend pub visit. Fish and chips, burgers, pie etc. Prices all over £20 for roasts which is not uncommon for these parts but for that price I was looking forward to something exceptional. The non roast items were frankly astonishingly expensive, £18.50 for a burger and £19 for fish and chips is madness despite how often I see these prices. Staff were very friendly and orders were taken, food took about as long as you would expect for a busy Sunday. I had the pork belly roast, first thing I noticed was the flaccid wilted watercress garnish, both unnecessary and un-appetising. The foundation of a good roast is the potatos. The should be fluffy on the inside, with a good crunchy exterior, neither of which these sad spuds could even dream of. There was no evidence of the accepted gold standard these days of par boiling then roasting in plenty of fat. They were hard, pale, and dry, I've had better for half the price. If a kitchen can't roast a good potato I question whether the chefs know what they're doing or they just don't care. The pork belly was another disappointment. This is a cut that is either pure indulgence or just bad. A good belly should melt in your mouth, you should almost be able to cut it with a spoon, and should be under a crackled skin that shatters on impact. I was served a tough rectangle of pork, fat left flabby and unrendered, and just plain disappointing. This again shows a lack of care as to what was leaving the kitchen as pork belly is incredibly forgiving, all it needs is heat, salt, and time, a long time, and it will reward you with succulence which was sorely missed. The apple sauce that was supposed to come with the pork didn't until I asked for it late into the meal when someone finally checked on us. Mushy peas were also missing from the fish and chips. Additional points of criticism are that children's food was brought out last rather than first which would have been a nice touch, the beautiful bathroom was marred by a tap hanging off its fitting, table being cleared while people were still eating, an electronic tablet was presented to us to give feedback rather than the staff actually talking to us, a long, really long wait before we could get anyone's attention after the mains to request dessert menus, another long wait for the bill, cauliflower cheese was dry and undercooked, arctic roll was hard, child's pizza that looked like they were running out of cheese, grey beef with no hint of pink, I think that's everything. For a pub that has clearly had a huge investment and looks fantastic inside and out, the food and service did not live up to this cozy but classy finish. More attention should be paid to the quality of food than the designer bathroom wallpaper, pure style over substance. I could forgive many of these faults in a pub that charged reasonable rates but this really should have been exceptional, instead it was weatherspoon quality with Michelin prices.

We went Sunday evening at about 7pm first time trying it since it's reopened. They took about 10 minutes to come and take our drinks order but the server was lovely. We had monkfish scampi to start which was nice but it didn't have much of the monkfish flavour and instead tasted like Pollock or cod, the tartare sauce was lovely and the waitress told us to use the lemon as it's a game changer which it really was. We both had the venison duck and smoked pancetta pie, there were pockets within the gravy in the pie that were just pure salt like the stock hadn't properly dispersed and the mash that came with it was more like mochi in texture (we like mochi so didn't mind) but it's wasn't the garlic confit mash that we thought we were getting my partner wasn't a fan of the braised red cabbage and it was quite vinegary I changed mine for their green cabbage and kale mix, it was nice but a literal forkful was all I got. We weren't blown away especially because the prices weren't reflective of the food but staff are lovely and looks great inside. Will give it another try once it's been open longer as other friends and family have had mixed experiences too.

Very disappointed. The menu was a limited as it was a Sunday, but we ordered the potted crab and scotch egg as starters. I asked what the fish of the day was and was told it was "roast cod loin with sea vegetables and some sort of potato I cant remember what". We thought she was going to ask when she got the drinks, but it wasnt ever mentioned again. We had our drinks delivered but had to ask three times for the jug of tap water. The scotch egg was delicious, but sadly two of us had the potted crab, which was basically butter with the vaguest hint of crab flavour, but as it was served with brioche bread, the sweetness of the brioche took over any bit of flavour there would have been. I did mention this and the manager agreed to remove the cost of both from the bill, which we were happy with. For mains two of us had roast chicken, one had the duck and venison pie and the other person fish and chips. Although the fish and chips were good, the tartar sauce unfortunately just tasted like a flavourless mayonnaise, which again we mentioned but were told that it's home made and just the way it was. The roast chicken was succulent, but we realised as we were driving home were completely missing the bread sauce that was supposed to come with it! In summary, for the prices we were paying we would expect much better tasting food, it was all a bit lacking in flavour.

Fake and intrusive US-type bonhomie "Hiya you guys, good to see ya, how you guys doin today'?" countered by slow service from multiple people. For 3 diners (mains only) and 1 pizza for 3-yr-old : £130 ++. No offer to compensate for incomplete pork dish e.g. small price cut, service% reduction. Avoid this pub. The Crown at Penn. I live very local and have been here many times but never reviewed. I have now been twice since the total relaxing of covid regs. Both times we have had small issues. The first time it was the time taken to get ordered and for food to arrive, I can't blame the staff for this as they always looked so busy. The second time it was availability of draught beer and menu items. The pub itself is a great place to sit and chat, the staff are excellent and the food and drink are excellent too. Large car park. Large garden. Lovely setting. I will definitely come again. ***late 2024*** The Crown went through a refit in the autumn, and though it is still a Green King pub, it has moved away from the Chef & Brewer label. Higher end now with higher prices and a pre added service charge. We went on day two of their reopening and couldn't get the same relaxed feelings from before. It could have been that everyone was trying too hard but we were asked by at least 6 different people if everything was ok, the person who seated us didn't know what real ale they had even though they had an iPad for menu reference, and it took a 2nd person and 15 minutes for us to get drinks. The food was quick coming, but we felt it wasn't any better than the other village pubs. The relaxed atmosphere from previous wasn't there though, which is a shame.

Really disappointed. Venue is great and the food tempted me, after seeing it on Instagram. Unfortunately the experience was really awful. The waiter was picking his nose as we ordered, should have left at that point. Also, we found a hair in the crab starter. Ordered a basic burger with added bacon. The burger arrived with no bacon, to be honest I didn't even realise. The waiter came around 5 mins later and asked me if I had ordered bacon in the burger after they realised my burger was on the table behind us. He then offered to bring me bacon on a separate plate, when I was already halfway through my burger. I refused, and then he asked the same thing 2 mins later. I told him at the same time the onion rings I ordered were also missing, he said he would go get them..... I then didn't see that waiter again, even though he kept walking past, and got no onion rings, as promised. They then tried to charge me for the bacon. I asked them to remove it, and they literally disappeared for 10 mins, doing who knows what. I had to go find them, standing round the corner just chatting amongst themselves. Really poor food and service, and I'm not one to leave reviews.....but this really annoyed me.

Used to be a really lovely pub, yes they have had a refurb but the food was abysmal. Steak sandwich that contained 1 WAFER thin piece of ‘steak’, 3 pieces of sliced soggy mushroom a lot of mustard and raclette cheese that severely overpowered any beef flavour. The server didn’t seem too bothered by our comments when asked how our food was. Wine prices are extortionate, £15.90 for a glass of rose!? Service was friendly and warmly greeted at the door. A shame, but won’t be returning. £100 for a very very less than average lunch. Very cheeky prices for a Greene King pub where the food just doesn’t do justice to the asking price.

It is very, very good. Menu was interesting, food was delicious and well presented, and service was slick and very professional. The venison loin was superb - only suggestion is that it would be nice to eat venison that's sourced from the immediate neighbourhood.

Done a great job of the place, food okay but too expensive for a chef and brewer.

The renovation is very beautiful. The selection of beers and drink has improved. Food has gone downhill, and the old menu was superior. Prices have gone up. Service was fine. Felt more like a restaurant than a local pub (which I missed from before).

We went with family for lunch. Really loved the atmosphere and what they’ve done with the place. Each of the dishes were excellent and couldn’t fault them. The wait staff were attentive and service was good. We’ll definitely go back.

Lovely pub with brand new refurbishment. Atmosphere and staff were lovely and we had a perfect Sunday afternoon with a large group of us and 4 dogs. We didn’t book but were given a lovely area in the bar by the fire. The garden looks great for the summer and there is a huge carpark. Prices are high compared to other pubs in the area both for drink and food. Food portions are also smaller than other local pubs.

Went the first week of reopening and will definitely be returning. Great food and great service. Need to be a little slicker and aware on service but overall a good vibe.

what an absolute ridiculously awful experience. we arrived for a booking at 6:30pm and were seated round a corner away from most other tables. we were not offered drinks, we had to catch someone’s attention to order them and our food at around 6:40. at this point we overheard another table complaining that they hadn’t had food in over an hour. our drinks were brought and we waited for an hour for our food while barely any staff came close to us. when we complained about the wait the manager simply said there was staff off ill and it wasnt our fault. of course its not our fault! apparently my burger was redressed three times because they wanted to make sure my dietary requirements were met. i’m not sure why this was the case. we received our food after complaining which was cold and tasteless. the manager said the bill was non existent but the principle is what matters. why take so many bookings if you can’t accommodate them all. could definitely do better!

Really impressed with the meal my wife and I had at Sunday lunchtime. Service was fantastic and all the staff seemed so positive and enthusiastic. All the components of the meal were great, from the gravy, to the vegetables it was all cooked to a really high standard. The new decor is amazing and so well thought out. The Crown is such a lovely building and the pub is in such a beautiful location, but for a long time the food and service has always been below the standard it deserved so we were blown away by how good our visit was today.

Enjoyed a couple of pints of beer in the garden. The whole place has been renovated beautifully and the service is friendly and professional. A few noisy kids around. Food slightly pricey, but ok for restaurant prices. Wine prices shocking, £30+ for cheapest bottles and rising steeply for decent stuff. Hope they do well.

“I recently visited with family and friends, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our time at this beautifully redecorated pub. It has a charming country-house vibe throughout. The staff were fantastic—attentive, friendly, and eager to help. The new staff member Lana, was especially kind, personally checking in on guests and sharing great insights about the dessert menu and various coffee options. This is definitely a go-to spot for a lovely meal and drink!”

I recently dined here, and it was an absolutely outstanding experience from start to finish. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was warm, inviting, and beautifully decorated, setting the perfect tone for a delightful meal. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, going out of their way to make sure we felt welcome and well taken care of. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, offering great recommendations and ensuring our glasses were never empty. Now, the food – simply divine. Every dish was a masterpiece, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor. The restaurant truly exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to return

Really good job on the refit! Keeps the feel of a country pub with a modern twist. Considering they have just reopened service and food were spot on, Venison was amazing, although if you prefer it more on the well done side I would ask them to cook it a bit longer, but perfect for me! The mashed potato with gravy and crispy onions was banging. Sharer platter for starter was a very large portion and really tasty. Would absolutely recommend.

Had a fantastic lunch at the Barn Kitchen. We booked in advance as the indoor seating is limited, there are more seating outside. The staff were very friendly and attentive. A lot of the menu items had gf and/or vegan alternatives. I had the roasted veg sandwich which I'd highly recommend. It was a lot more filling than I expected and tasted delicious. The only down sides with the venue are the acoustics which aren't ideal and the capacity of the venue as I can imagine it being very full during the summer.
