9 of us wrnt for Mothers Day lunch. We were seated straight away. Thr food was delicious, garlic mushrooms and roast turkey ! The yorkshire puddings and the roast potatoes are to die for! Finished off with a Brownie Sundae! 10 out of 10 once again Crown and Anchor!

We ate here on a Wednesday night assuming it would be quieter - glad we booked as it was rammed. Service was very friendly from both the young man and the young lady who served us. We both enjoyed our meals (famous fish pie and steak and ale pie) and they were both excellent which was nice to see as the kitchen staff / serving staff were flat out. Would recommend and will return.

Had a lovely meal today. I had the chicken roast and the portion of chicken is huge! My only criticism is that there isn’t enough vegetables on the plate for the amount of meat. A few more veggies without paying additional would make a perfect meal. It came out hot and the gravy was really nice. My boyfriend had pie which was packed out with meat and delicious. Highly recommend for good pub grub.

Lovely food, their pies are on point. Service was slack though. The waitress walked past me several times when I was trying to make eye contact and serving people who came in after me.

A bit too noisy ....some squawking children but it can't be helped..... parents should take responsibility

We had a lovely meal. The pulled pork and kimchi bon bon we delicious,as was the rest of the meal. We will be back

We’re never disappointed when we visit! Never had a bad meal and the pies are an absolute favourite of mine. The staff are always welcoming, polite, helpful and so friendly. They can’t do enough for you! It’ll always be our favourite place to eat!

Well I'm here to tell you the truth been there tonight wife ordered chicken was pre-worned it will be 25 to 30 minutes no problem other members of the family or the pie and gammon no problem I ordered house burger should be no problem we sat there the chicken came out gorgeous meal like being at the Ritz and London other two meals coming out all right wait just come up to the table extra onion rings that I'd ordered she said your house burger will be about two minutes everybody else was tucking in really enjoying it obviously the ad forgot all about my burger when it finally arrived about five minutes later look like it been run over by a tank being serious with you had better 99 pence cheeseburgers from McDonald's burger was quite frankly disgusted top of the bun was absolutely frozen cold they're quite frankly forgot all about my order in the kitchen if you can't cook other stuff off the menu like chicken don't bother putting it on the menu I think it was some kind of house manager came up with a free pint and saying we've cooked 200 meals today yours is the only one that's no good I'm not bother about 200 meals he was driving on about well we're going to take it off the bill you are not going to pay for it and here's a free drink do you want a free dessert I tried to tell him it's not about the money as we eat out all over Yorkshire and I have never in my life complained really about a meal and not bothered about the money there's not like else to say but if you want chicken off the menu and anything away from burgers and pies without the chicken please do not go there thank you

Great Staff, Great Food, Great Atmosphere

Really enjoyed a excellent meal with friends last Tuesday lunch time. Wheelchair access was good and the staff were happy to help. Hope to be back!

We had a wonderful pre Christmas roast and a couple of drinks by the fire in the bar. Great atmosphere and food. The reason I dropped a star for each was it was a bit noisy an d the vegan selection wasn't brilliant.

Great food, fabulous friendly service, lovely place to lunch with friends- What a fantastic find! Having gotten together with close friends and families, we were a group of 10 (5 adults, 5 kids, 2 babies). We'd been out trampolining with all the children, and realising the trampoline cafe was closed, we found ourselves with no where to go for lunch. We found the Crown and Anchor with a quick online search. They were immediately able to help us. When we arrived, a table was already set and waiting for us. There was a roaring fire in the hearth, and the whole place had a honely, welcoming feel. We were seated at a comfy, roomy table with plenty of seats and more than enough spacing for the lot of us + prams, too. The staff were friendly from the moment we arrived- the kind of proffessional friendliness that puts you at ease. We ordered in leisurely time- we weren't rushed into anything and yet we werent left waiting, either. The waitress was more than happy to explain what came with what, tell us about daily specials, etc. Everything was smooth and relaxed. The drinks arrived promptly, again everything was great. When the food arrived, it was amazing! The portion sizes are generous but not to over the top- just right. I had the House Burger, which came with fries and pickle. The burger was cooked perfectly, and the brioch bun was done warm, soft and fresh. The childrens menu was again generously portioned and again, just right. The cost was very reasonable and probably less than we would have ended up paying out at the original cafe idea. We will definitely be back here for post-trampolining lunches- what a fabulous place for eating! Definitely recommend this gem of a pub for a nice relaxing lunch with friends.

Really lovely, polite, attentive staff. Fantastic ambient atmosphere. Well thought out decor. Amazing vibe. Unfortunately the food was a massive let down. It’s very very middle of the road food that is served on aesthetically pleasing plates and charged heavily for. Burger bun was stale and very salty meat. Could only eat half of it before feeling like I was going to have a heart attack. Starters were tasty but again, served on posh plates to try and justify paying over the odds for. Did mention it to our really accommodating waitress but I think she misunderstood the reasons why we couldn’t eat it. Venue and staff are 5* but like a lot of places now they serve mediocre food on posh plates and charge through the nose. Disappointing. Wouldn’t eat here again but would deffo pop in for a pint.

Booked a table for 12 people. On arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. The staff are excellent at customer service The menu was sumptuous with food to please all tastes. Everyone in our group enjoyed the mouthwatering meal they had chosen along with the drinks ordered which were to a high standard. We loved the old world charm that created a warm and inviting atmosphere too. Cant recommend enough. Thank you so much for making our Christmas extra special you are all amazing.

Went for Christmas dinner. No sprouts, parsnip, or Yorkshire pudding and tiny portions. Glad I wasn't paying the £28.

Lovely festive lunch here today. Reasonably priced for 3 courses (discounted if booked under certain conditions). Excellent service and welcoming atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

Amazing pies cooked to perfection, tasty dish, served with minted peas and choice of chips. Fully satisfied, a great price too. Busy with atmosphere sat warm and toasty by the fireside. A great Monday teatime treat, highly recommended. Perfect.

1st of all I accept that we are not the easiest customers, I am Celiac and my until recently my wife was Vegitarian however we booked here because of good reviews for gluten free food. Disaster. We booked for 7:30pm and arrived 10 minutes early, we were seated and waited for the menu. The servers first words to us after hello were We've no chicken or Vegitarian. The only meat my ex Vegitarian wife will eat is chicken, failing that she has the vegi option so there was nothing to eat. It also states in the small print of the memue that GF food is prepared in the same area as normal food. This means I couldn't eat anything for fear of cross contamination. This wasn't mentioned when we booked and I told them I was celiac.

Absolutely super pub with really good traditional roast and pies. Food was well seasoned and very tasty. Service pretty good, although could have come past to offer more drinks. Overall, really pleased to have found it and would definitely recommend.

Son treat me to a meal out last night. Food, service & ambience was fabulous as always. Cheese fondue & Fish pie for Mum, Mussels, Duck & Oreo cheesecake for the boy. Just the best tasting food! Sent pics to the hubby (who is currently on a cruise) who said he was envious of our meal! Keep on doing what you do C&A, superb 👍

Food is OK service is really good

Went in the evening for a family meal and the food was delicious, the atmosphere was lovely - especially with all the fairy lights, and the service was top tier. It’s a little pricey but worth it. Will definitely be coming back!

I was advised to have one of their pies. I wasn't disappointed. It was excellent, as was the service. I wasn't as keen on the real ale I sampled. Glad I didn't buy a pint without trying it. Otherwise, a great place.

Great meal as usual, slight disappointment with the Katsu curry, a bit dry and overcooked but the place was extremely busy and everything else was fine.

Staff are really welcoming great food loved it will go back again.

Having moved to the area recently we are keen to sample the local eateries and were recommended to try The Crown and Anchor. We went last night for a family birthday meal and were blown away by how good it was. Lovely surroundings and beautiful outside seating area, and inside a lively atmosphere. Fairly typical gastro pub decor - oak beams, fairy lights and wooden flooring. Service was efficient and friendly from Emily at front of house, and our waitress Taylor. The menu offered plenty of choice and between the three of us we went for salt and pepper calamari with a sriracha mayo dip, and piri piri King prawns on ciabatta. Everything was piping hot, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. For mains we had fish and chips, house burger with extra pulled pork and the missus went for an unusual option - two starters and a side combo. Everything arrived promptly even though the restaurant was really busy, and again was delicious. My fish was particularly good with beautiful crispy batter, and the goats cheese stuffed pepper was magnificent. Emily surprised us with the offer of a complimentary cocktail as it was our son's birthday, which naturally he accepted. The Old Fashioned arrived complete with a sparkly firework - a really nice touch and totaout of the blue. Sadly we were all too stuffed to manage a pud, but I'm certain we wouldn't have been disappointed. We ended up staying for the regular Thursday night quiz, which was a lovely fun way to end the evening. This is an absolutely excellent gastro pub which I cannot recommend highly enough. If I'm being picky I'd say the sriracha mayo could have had a bit more of a kick, and the gent's toilet could do with an upgrade, but otherwise absolutely first rate all round. We'll definitely be back for more!

We had a great meal, made even better by a 2 for 1 voucher. The quality and quantity of food was great. One slight disappointment was the service. It started well, but they forgot about us later on 🙁

What a lovely evening at the crown and anchor. We’ve been a few times over the years and the food has always been good. Tonight was no exception. There is a lot of passion goes into the cooking, I had the calamari starter then the rump steak and everything had been made with love. We had a side of seasonal green veg and this had been cooked to perfection. As s veg lover I was delighted this was not an afterthought. Keep up the good work!

I’ve lived in Barnsley most of my life, how have I never had a Sunday lunch here?! 26 years of my life wasted. Came on Sunday and had the roast beef Sunday dinner with cauliflower cheese sharer… wow!! Hands down best Sunday dinner I’ve ever had! Of course all washed down with a few drinks. Make sure you visit in Sundays!!

The food was lovely. We all had Sunday roast, and it was really good. A few of us had pudding as well, and that was just as good. There was quite a wait for food which we weren't told about. It was clear it was busy, but it would have been good to know how long the wait would be, as it ended up being an hour before we got our food. And with a 17 month old, it took a lot of entertaining to keep them happy. The atmosphere is really nice and they have a lovely outdoor area too with lots of benches. It would have been even better if they had a play area, with it being a family pub. The pricing was okay. It averaged around £30ish each, for a main, pudding, and drink. Which isn't too bad as the food was lovely. It did feel a tad expensive looking at everything individually, but prices have gone up in general, and that will affect the price of going out for food. Regardless of this, we would all definitely go again.

Always a bit hit n miss, when it's good it's very good, other times it's a bit disappointing. Improving the service would definitely be an easy improvement to make.

Group of about 16 for a company get together held here for evening meal. Staff were very accommodating in the food area. Bar service was a bit slow but nothing to complain about but glad it wasn’t a busy night. Food was good. I had the aubergine curry which was very good despite it being changed at the last minute from a Thai veg curry. Aubergine was deep friend in a batter and was very tasty. Saw that a few others had fish and chips and Barnsley chop. Chop looked small but everything looked good and all came out at the same time. Which is good for a large group. Nice evening with colleagues and well supported by the Crown and Anchor team.

Stopped after a visit to Wentworth Castle Gardens, Great dog friendly pub, good selection of beers/ales and great food. Well worth a visit if in the area.

Best gluten free pub food we have ever had! I'm coeliac and I had the bacon belly with colcannon and chicken wings to start. Chicken wings were crispy and amazing and the pork belly fell apart. Will definitely be back

Lovely place, great garden area.

It was our first visit here tonight for an anniversary meal. I booked the table easily online. The gent serving us tonight was fantastic! Our food was really, really good and to top it off they brought out a couple of cheesecakes with a sparkle fountain to celebrate our anniversary. It was a truly lovely surprise. This pub has not changed in years . the staff were great we had a dog with us and its dog friendly not many of these about the food was good we were made to feel very welcome Will we go back again? It's a no brainer. a big fat, yes

Attended tonight for a cocktail making session tonight with Kris, fantastic experience only one spillage! Kris was informative, attentive and entertaining. Fabulous fun. Highly recommended

2 stars because food was good. Service however was quite poor. 2 kids at the table but no kids menu to be seen. This lead the kids to pick adult portions then having to deal with them having to pick something from kids menu when we got one. Mussels served without spoon and bowl for the shells. No one came to check if food was fine and see for extra drinks. Not the best experience so won't go back.

Fabulous place. Great food and fantastic selection of wine cocktails and gin. Always a lovely welcome and great atmosphere.

The food was average, but what led me to a low rating was the atmosphere; so disappointed. It was “rowdy” and the service slow, yes I appreciate it’s a bank holiday but trying to enjoy a meal with so much noise coming from the bar was impossible, so much so I left with a headache; sorry guys but some separation from bar to restaurant may not go astray.

Really great customer service, both ordered the Vegan Phish and Chips they were great!! Made with Banana Blossom and thick cut chips served with a portion of mushy peas which is kept separate in case you aren't too keen. The food was delicious and will definitely go again! Super crispy and tasty!

Wasn’t sure what to expect being a coeliac but the efficient Reese took the menu to the chef and came back with everything I could have that they could modify for me, I was really grateful and appreciated this. I had amazing g fish and chips and my husband had his favourite, steak pie. Couldn’t have been better, will definitely be back 😊

We had a good Sunday lunch the roast was very good and served at the table I don’t like carvery and this is so much better especially when the service is good. The choices offered for the roast were good ,we had three vegans in our party and their choices were limited, having said that I’m told the vegan roast was delicious. As I have said the service was good, attentive without being intrusive the pub was very busy and there were marquees with what appeared to be a wedding party at the back of the car park despite being so busy the staff were great. Well done.

Okay, but 4 roast beef dinners all chewy and full of fat (not medium as requested) £91 with one bottle of wine, one beer and a soft drink.

Went on a Monday evening as with the rewards card there was a massive 50% off the food :). We have eaten and drank MANY times here but i honestly have to say this meal was the best ! Two of us had the salt and pepper squid with sriracha mayo and it was superb, crispy , tasty and the mayo was to die for. My other half had the buffalo chicken wings with blue cheese and again he said they were so tasty and enjoyable (but messy :) For mains i had the grilled pork rib eye and boy am i glad i did. It was the nicest piece of pork i have ever tasted (praises to the chef). The others had the lemon chicken and house burger and nothing was left on the plates. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. Rest assured we will be returning. Even though it was VERY busy everything ran smoothly and you could tell that everything was cooked to order. Just keep on doing what you are because believe me you're doing it right
