Cross Scythes Hotel in Sheffield

Absolutely awful. Booked a meal at least a week in advance. Greeted by a bartender who said we had to wait to be seated until his boss turned up After ten minutes we insisted we be served because his boss had no intention of sorting out our booking. Eventually the bartender took our orders by this time it was 20 minutes after our booking time. The food was pretty poor. The peas amazingly were over microwaved yet cold !!! The chicken had been microwaved so much it was tough as old boots. After nearly 30 mins the dessert arrived. Sadly it had been subjected to the same over-zapping and turned out to be the toughest rhubarb crumble we have ever had. Strange that because the waiter told us it was apple and salted caramel. The custard was pretty good tho. I suppose it’s hard to burn custard although given time I’m sure they could do it. Fortunately we won’t have to return again.

Just had Sunday lunch there with my family and we will definitely return. The food was absolutely delicious (the roast veggies were *chefs kiss*) , the staff were friendly and attentive. A thourally enjoyable afternoon was had and now I need a nap because I'm stuffed 😊

We went for a late Sunday lunch. Food was good although heavy on potato and light on other veg. However it was delicious, my pork was absolutely gorgeous . The service was good if a bit haphazard but they were busy. Had a pud … salted Caramel apple crumble .. this was probably a case of overthinking… a simple crumble would have worked better .. not sure what was in the crumble .. rice crispies? Ok but a bit strange!

Booked a table for Sunday lunch as a large family. Nothing was left on the menu at 2.30pm. Meat seemed reheated. No crackling with pork meal. Poor experience overall. Did get a refund for half the meal and appreciate the efforts with desert. Won’t return.

Booked in for Sunday lunch. On arrival we weren’t on the list so got offered either a tiny table or one in the bar area. Chose to sit in the bar and very quickly regretted this! Another customer came into the bar with a large dog that was barking continuously and kept putting his paws on top of the bar. The waiter came to greet the dog and the dog climbed all over his clothing and he patted the dog- hygiene issues!!! The customer was loud and disrupting the otherwise calm environment. Whilst I accept the pub is not responsible for this man’s behaviour, I felt the staff should have insisted the dog does not have its paws on the bar and encouraged the man to calm his dog and speak quieter. Maybe this dog friendly pub will ultimately loose them the business of paying customers. I am not against dogs in pubs- but surely well behaved dogs and well behaved owners should be a priority! Sadly we won’t go again, dispute the meal been acceptable.

Popped in here mid afternoon, staff were friendly but made it very clear they were struggling with a big party being in. Asked if food was being served, then once we sat down with a drink told otherwise.

Edited an old rating from when this place was good. This place has really gone downhill under the new management. Went as a family of four for Sunday lunch. Even our 4 & 6 year old boys were mocking the food, it was abysmal. First choices were out of stock, second choices were really poor. Had several friends visit on different ocassions and all had the exact same experience. They need to improve fast or the reputation will remain... a real shame as it should be a great local.

Came in for a drink with friends last night and was greeted by a very arrogant member of staff who thought he could pick and choose who he served, seemed to think he knew everything. It's a shame because this seems to be a nice pub

Freddie and Bella were very friendly behind the bar and I had a lovely evening.

10/10 for the staff, very warm and friendly. 8/10 for the evening meal and bar service. 7/10 for room facilities. Balcony, comfortable bed, room on the small side, right next to the road, not much room on the table/dressing table to function properly, no teabags, small mirror on table, decent shower. 6/10 for room cleanliness. Carpet looks tired and grubby, quite a lot of dust around, balcony not cleaned or swept and ashtray not even emptied, grubby skirting in the bathroom, bedding was clean. 6/10 for sleep quality. Hot night but couldn't use the very noisy fan or open balcony door because of the very noisy road right next to us, bed was comfortable. 6/10 for breakfast. Layout poor, only dish and cereal on table, had to ask for milk, sugar and even spoon, no juice, food was OK but suspect precooked and kept warm, toast was hard. 9/10 for value. Overall...positives and negatives, decent value and would consider staying again.

Once again excellent service and food from Joe and all the team. Always made to feel so welcome by everyone. James and Paige today but all the team are exactly the same as I visit most days for a drink and food a couple of times a week. Also so very dog friendly that I never have a problem bringing mine with me.

Father's Day Sunday Lunch, excellent portions, bit slow on the service. Price was £16-£18 for a main, which isn't out of whack these days. Desserts were excellent. Main criticism, other than no one returning for the bottomless Yorkshire puddings/potatoes, was the parsnips/carrots hadn't been par-boiled first. They looked excellent roasted, but were hard. Can get away with that for carrots, less so for parsnips. The meat was very good, as were the yorkshires, and would certainly go back.

Really nice friendly pub. Had a full English breakfast with friends could not fault the food or the service, nothing to complain about.

Great cozy stay right on the edge of the peak district with delicious food and an overall very cozy vibe. I very much enjoyed my time there and would happily book again!!

We saw the big sign outside after our walk today Coffee & Cake £5...unfortunately no cake only millionaires shortbread the latte was lukewarm and there were no teaspoons as they were waiting to be washed !! Having said that, we do enjoy this pub.

Stayed for one night- never again. Over priced, dirty rooms, dust and cobwebs, bits on carpet, shower door didn’t fully open as hit the sink, mould on grout, cardboard holding soap dispenser in place at the sink. Mushrooms on windowsill in pub toilet.

Amazing service from evan charlie and steph, they were incredibly busy with a huge booking on the far area of the pub, but they never failed to ensure all tables were accommodated! Food was fantastic, we had fish & chips and 2 lasagne and it was lovely! we were made aware of a wait but even better it came before the given time! Came on a Sunday for a roast, used to like this pub before all the changes were made. Don’t even really have an issue with the food, but the service was shocking. No one tells you to order on the barcode, so your just sat waiting until you figure it out and 10 mins later someone finally came up to us. Very unwelcoming as well. Would be nice to see a smile on a workers face when being greeted and not feel like an inconvenience. When our drinks were brought over they were slapped on the table and the worker walked away without saying anything. It just doesn’t feel like somewhere u to when u want go out for a good time anymore, used to be. Food was very standard. Disappointed that it’s not how it used to be before the takeover.

Had very good meal here this afternoon. The staff are very helpful, efficient and friendly. They were very busy with a party booking in one are and diners coming in throughout the afternoon. The beer battered fish was particularly good.

What a horrible birthday experience hospitality non existent had a meal there this afternoon with my family for my birthday obviously my birthday I was carrying a big Happy birthday balloon we asked for a table for 4 expecting out of politeness to be shown to a table the host needs training in hospitality skills I've worked in that sector and know the ropes he was very robotic and miserable my son-in-law found a hair in his dessert but we didn't want to make a fuss wish we had their wasn't a receipt offered on payment or a thankyou and goodbye but I will say goodbye because my family and friends will never visit this place again you've really made my birthday memorable for all the wrong reasons

Very disappointing outing to this restaurant. Given its boasts we expected better. My partner had fish and chips, not crisp enough , batter soggy, I had Hunters chicken - wow that chicken was 103 years old, tough, tasteless. We chose Apple crumble and Sticky toffee for sweets. Crumble was doused in sugar, custard was weak, and tasteless. Bad news all-round not recommended.

Éramos una mesa de cuatro que disfrutaron de una cena en la Cruz, ya que no hemos estado aquí por mucho tiempo. La comida era deliciosa, con una buena selección del menú principal, muchos de los cuales son sin gluten (tienen una freidora separada para papas fritas también). Compartimos dos entrantes de calamares y papas halloumi. Para los platos principales teníamos empanadas de la Junta de Especiales, que venía con papas y salsa y salmón ahumado y ensalada de remolacha con papas fritas en el lado - muy sabroso y muy bien presentado. El personal era muy acogedor y amable, sin duda volveremos.

Me quedé muy impresionado con la calidad de la comida y la elección del menú. Pensé que el personal era extremadamente amable y servicial. Esto hace una gran diferencia. Noté los toques extra, como el jarrón de flores frescas en el bar, las copas de bebidas extravagantes y la guarnición de fresa. Impresionado con huevos de gama libre y opciones vegetarianas. El pan casero es encantador. Decoración muy agradable, etc. No nos alojamos en el hotel, solo visitamos para el almuerzo. 10/10 Lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

We have been meaning to try the food at The Cross Scythes, as I understand there is a connection with The Hidden Gem, which is excellent. We happened to choose Burns Night and as a fan of Haggis I chose this dish, whilst my OH chose a special of Chicken and Mushroom Pie. My meal was very good, with a tasty Haggis and the usual keeps and tatties. My OH said the pie was good, although personally, I would have liked a shortcrust pastry rather than puff pastry, if I had the pie. The filling was tasty, though he would have liked the pieces of chicken to be larger. Staff were very pleasant and attentive and we will try Breakfast next time!

Muy sabrosos especiales y encantador domingo asado. Tuve el especial de pastel de pescado con verduras de temporada y fue genial. Mucho más sabroso que de costumbre pub fayre. El asado se veía muy bien, pero es una pena que no haya ninguna opción vegetariana. Un asado de nueces sería apreciado. Tengo que decir que el menú regular, aunque sabroso y bien cocinado, no se veía tan emocionante como los especiales. Volveré aunque me impresionó tanto mi plato como las zanahorias amarillas y púrpuras.

Decidimos tomar una bebida un viernes por la noche para probar el ambiente y ver el menú. Estaba muy ocupado, con muchas familias afuera en la taberna al aire libre. Nos sentamos dentro de la zona principal del bar, que también estaba lleno. Ahora no quiero sonar como un "aguafiestas", ya que tenemos nietos, pero tenemos un par de cierta edad y no estoy seguro de que apreciemos ir a un bar con tantos niños corriendo, ¿quién? de hecho, no estaban teniendo comidas. Entonces, en la reflexión, no estoy seguro de que Cross Scythes sea para nosotros.
