Reading through the bad reviews and feeling bad for people tbh.however we have just stayed overnight and had a excellent experience, the staff were very freindly and the room was clean and nice,if I was a big drinker I agree that lots of the drinks were not available as the pub is changing hands so prob the reason for that.all I can say individually is well done staff and well done to the manager we met we found her a diamond even molly the dog liked her after a free sausage

Updated review: The Cross Scythes has been a staple in my life. Somewhere I enjoyed the best meals in totley growing up, worked through my adolescent years and summers home from London, and somewhere I genuinely looked forward to returning to, it gave me that nostalgic feeling of home with its inviting corners, tasty beer and fantastic local produce. Just what has happened to this once wonderful pub? Throughout the pandemic Scott and Ben fought to keep standards high, even at their own cost. Now this place which holds importance and fond memories for so many is fronted by a soulless, profit driven outfit lacking in basic empathy and human decency. Standards have slipped to a new low in recent trips home, but still I remained optimistic. Christmas Eve/Day at the Cross are a staple in my family. I was so looking forward to catching old friends and enjoying some great drinks, but this was not to be. Upon entering the pub 4pm most of the drinks were out, including Lager/Guinness and most other popular mainstays. Real ale all gone. By 9pm what remained was cider or John Smiths, with a handful of wines available. The atmosphere in the pub was sour, with people already making alternative arrangements for the following day. Now, I am aware Stonegate are selling up, but this is no excuse. You know the pub will be busy at these times, you know your staff will have to face the backlash, you know you are letting your community down. As I enjoyed my Guinness at the Shepley Spitfire on Christmas Day, we heard about the ensuing chaos at the Cross, and I can only offer sympathy to the poor staff who’s Christmas was undoubtedly ruined, alongside the many guests trying to enjoy their day. Good riddance Stonegate, please don’t come back to Totley. Roll on the new owners who know how to act with basic decency and respect.

Christmas Day, dreadful, ended up requesting refund and going home to make pasta. Should have eaten at 3pm but waited an extra 30 minutes to be seated as did many others. We pre ordered food in advance , was told this was not available when we arrived (starters) accepted alternative which was frozen food chucked in a fryer, no one ever came to the table to ask if we wanted drinks, no mains ever arrived felt as though they were stalling and had run out of food as all other tables around us also had no mains. No welcome Prosecco as they had run out but didn’t offer any alternative, no crackers , dirty tables, flooded dirty toilets which our 91 year old grandma struggled to use, felt so sorry for poor front of house staff as they didn’t seem to know what was going on either. Many others ended up walking out. We’ll see if refund ever arrives as promised by management.

If I could give a zero rating even that would be too much! Ruined our Christmas Day & left our kids starving! Left us an hour & half with no food apart from some lousy appetiser consisting of goats cheese served with olives & chutney to share between 9 of us.. then a slice of toast with cheese that was suppose to be garlic bread for the kids! No draught drink no cider / lager no Prosecco on arrival which should have been a red flag.. to then be told that there was no food left & would therefore not be able to feed us .. being told this at 5.30 leaving us with no Christmas dinner & without any where else to go & eat ! Absolute farce .. offered no excuse no apology no compensation! All this was booked months in advance! Best thing they could do is shut this place down. Disgusting

One star is too high. Absolute disaster of a Christmas Day. Pre ordered yet they ran out of stock for all courses. And we pre paid! Regretting that massively… Took 30 minutes to be sat down. An hour to get some awful looking appetisers. No welcome Prosecco, tables filthy, ran out of drinks. We had to drink wine in half pint glasses as they had no clean wine glasses. Shocking quality of food, can tell they literally ran to a corner shop for ingredients. Took two hours to get any food. We left after the mains, where we got no Yorkshire puddings or roast potatoes. The poor staff looked traumatised, and were crying. Stonegate should hang their heads in shame. The worst Christmas Day we’ve ever had. The owners knew what they were doing… they ran stock low as they knew they were going, took our money and left their poor staff to pick up the pieces. Scumbags.

I can’t believe what I am experiencing! It’s Christmas Eve and we’ve come out for a family evening as my son is home from university. How can we be sat in the pub on Christmas Eve and they have run out of ALL draft lagers, IPA’s and Guinness. John Smiths or Inches are the options left. To make it an even better evening they have decided to call last orders at 21:45!!! This is a joke! Merry Christmas all

Terrible food and service. Went here for a meal with friends today. Fish was just hard batter and no fish. Myself and a friend wasn't charged for the meal when we complained which was a good job as no way would we pay £16 for hard batter. The service was shocking. Took ages for the food to arrive. Once we'd been served with the main course no one bothered to come and ask if we wanted a dessert or drinks. I had to have something to eat later in town as I was still hungry. Avoid this place at all costs if you want a decent meal.

Absolutely awful. Booked a meal at least a week in advance. Greeted by a bartender who said we had to wait to be seated until his boss turned up After ten minutes we insisted we be served because his boss had no intention of sorting out our booking. Eventually the bartender took our orders by this time it was 20 minutes after our booking time. The food was pretty poor. The peas amazingly were over microwaved yet cold !!! The chicken had been microwaved so much it was tough as old boots. After nearly 30 mins the dessert arrived. Sadly it had been subjected to the same over-zapping and turned out to be the toughest rhubarb crumble we have ever had. Strange that because the waiter told us it was apple and salted caramel. The custard was pretty good tho. I suppose it’s hard to burn custard although given time I’m sure they could do it. Fortunately we won’t have to return again.

Edited an old rating from when this place was good. This place has really gone downhill under the new management. Went as a family of four for Sunday lunch. Even our 4 & 6 year old boys were mocking the food, it was abysmal. First choices were out of stock, second choices were really poor. Had several friends visit on different ocassions and all had the exact same experience. They need to improve fast or the reputation will remain... a real shame as it should be a great local.

10/10 for the staff, very warm and friendly. 8/10 for the evening meal and bar service. 7/10 for room facilities. Balcony, comfortable bed, room on the small side, right next to the road, not much room on the table/dressing table to function properly, no teabags, small mirror on table, decent shower. 6/10 for room cleanliness. Carpet looks tired and grubby, quite a lot of dust around, balcony not cleaned or swept and ashtray not even emptied, grubby skirting in the bathroom, bedding was clean. 6/10 for sleep quality. Hot night but couldn't use the very noisy fan or open balcony door because of the very noisy road right next to us, bed was comfortable. 6/10 for breakfast. Layout poor, only dish and cereal on table, had to ask for milk, sugar and even spoon, no juice, food was OK but suspect precooked and kept warm, toast was hard. 9/10 for value. Father's Day Sunday Lunch, excellent portions, bit slow on the service. Price was £16-£18 for a main, which isn't out of whack these days. Desserts were excellent. Main criticism, other than no one returning for the bottomless Yorkshire puddings/potatoes, was the parsnips/carrots hadn't been par-boiled first. They looked excellent roasted, but were hard. Can get away with that for carrots, less so for parsnips. The meat was very good, as were the yorkshires, and would certainly go back.

Nice place to visit in Sheffield. The winter gardens are attached and there is plenty to see and have a quiet coffee in the gardens. There's plenty of restaurants nearby if you want something more substantial.

Have had quite a few meals here, always great but Unfortunately when I went for Christmas dinner, they were completely packed, and seemed to be struggling with the amount of people service and quality of food were no way near the usual standard, so from now on I’m avoiding busy periods.
