We arrived on Friday evening at about 7.15 pm hoping for dinner. We were immediately greeted by the young lady behind the bar, who said that of course we could have dinner. Actually, it became obvious that there was no problem as there wasn't anybody else in the dining section. When we commented on the lack of diners, she rather strangely said that there were usually more customers for dinner during the week than the weekends. We wondered why? There is a good pub menu and I went for the haddock pie and he decided on bangers and mash. The dining section is quirkily decorated, which is rather nice, but there does not appear to be any heating, and we were a bit chilly. The food looked good on arrival, and the chef obviously knows how to do things properly, in that there was hard boiled egg in the fish pie and the bangers came with an extra small jug of gravy. I was hoping for a lovely creamy fish pie with real mashed potatoes and fresh veg, and he was hoping for lovely sausages and real mashed potatoes. But the pie was really very dry and not very taseful, and although his sausages were delicious (locally sourced) we both thought that the mash was probably "smash" i.e. out of a packet. Since we had not much enjoyed the main course, we thought we would try puddings, and I ordered the sticky toffee pudding and he had apple crumble. His crumble was good, and the sticky toffee sauce was OK, but poured over a very ordinary piece of sponge. The wine per glass is very reasonably priced which is perhaps why there is nothing very special about it. There have been other reviews praising the food, but we were disappointed. . Some parts of the evening were good, but other parts were definitely not - hence my title. If the food had not been so dry, we would have added another star.

My wife and I had Sunday lunch at the Cross in Hand today. This was our first visit so didn't know what to expect. We nearly didn't stay as we had to negotiate our way past the pool table, slot machines and loud television to get to the bar. However, the staff were very friendly and directed us to a different part of the premises which was obviously the dining area. There was only one other diner there which didn't fill us with confidence as this was at 1pm on a Sunday. When our food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find we had been served well cooked, tasty and generous portions. Service was attentive without being intrusive and it's a pity that more people aren't availing of the Cross in Hand. I know nothing about the hospitality industry, so I can't be sure why the Cross in Hand isn't busier than it is, but my guess is that it doesn't know what it wants to be - an old fashioned pub or a modern eatery. Consequently, it doesn't do either particularly well - which is a shame. The ambience of the restaurant is missing and the usual pub sounds intrude into the dining area. The Cross in Hand is a family run establishment and it would be a shame if it doesn't succeed. Maybe a visit from Alex Polizzi would help.

Giving 5 stars can be mis-leading, so you have to take it in context. We stopped at The Cross In Hand pub for a bite to lunch on the way to Ticehurst. I had the X burger (new to the menu that day), which was a 5oz burger, chicken fillet, two rashes of bacon, cheese, jalepenos (loads) and bbq sauce, all in a bun. Obviously you wouldn't be able to get your mouth around that lot, and so it became a meal, and it was great for what it was. At £8.99 I thought it was a bit pricey until it arrived with a gherkin and cherry tomato pinned down on top; it was well worth the price. My wife had just garlic bread, but said it was lovely. So in context, this is 5 stars for pub grub compared to other pub grub. Service was very friendly, and the beer garden out back was clean and tidy. Cutlery and plates were also spotless.

Was passing at around 8:50 in the evening and felt a tad peckish so decided to drop in for a quick drink with a friend an maybe snack on some chips rather than grabbing a take away. On arriving the staff were very friendly an were more than happy to keep the kitchen open to cater for me and my friend which to be honest most other pubs would have probably been less welcoming from experience. The lady behind the bar passed me a menu plus their new build your own burger menu which I can highly reccomend. I had a 4oz burger which I chose Brie, fried onion and jalapeños with a side order of Cajun chips. One of the best burgers and pub meals in a long while! The bun was soft and fresh an the burger tasted home made also didn't end up with half a grocers worth of greens which no one really wants tbh. Portion was perfect an the chips to die for. Unfortunately the pub is situated on a busy junction (which don't let this deter you ) just mentioning as this is the one and only reason I can think of as to why people aren't currently queuing out the door. If you like a very clean cosy country feel pub, bright light an friendly, well priced an welcoming with outstanding food you have to try this pub!! 10/10 thank you for such a pleasant evening.

In a world of fine dining and gastro pubs, I fail to understand how pubs like this still exist. No local beer, and the one I selected (Adnams!) had run out. Food was very poor - pretty sure I ate instant mash with Gravy granules gravy ! although vegetables were well cooked. No wonder the kitchens close at 8:30 on a Saturday night- we were the only ones eating, which should have rung alarm bells. We ate two really nice meals which were piping hot, substantial sizes, and used nice quality ingredients. The beer was nice and cold and the prices were really good value - even before you take the tastecard discount into account.
