The Crooked Swan in Crewkerne gets so many things right—from the food and drink to the service, atmosphere, and character—and perhaps most surprisingly, it’s all very reasonably priced. We keep returning, but I have to say: Head Chef Ben’s recent addition of the Kansas City Style Smoked BBQ Rib is outstanding. It’s become a personal favourite—it’s tender, rich with flavour, and exactly the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite just to appreciate how well it’s been done. The portions here are extremely generous, yet they never sacrifice quality for quantity—both are delivered in spades, which is a rare thing these days. Another highlight is the Crooked Swan Fish and Chips—crispy, flaky, and served with a curry sauce that hits all the nostalgic notes. It’s that classic chip shop curry sauce you thought had disappeared forever. Pair it with a pint of their own Cygnature Cider—a true medium dry, proper Somerset cider that’s crisp, refreshing, and worth coming in for alone. And if you’re after a cocktail, ask for the Margarita—it’s made with care, balanced just right, and genuinely one of the best I’ve had in the area. The staff are consistently warm, attentive, and effortlessly hospitable. They go the extra mile without ever feeling overbearing. Special mention to the manager, Meg, who’s truly lovely—she makes every guest feel welcome and personally seen, which gives the whole place a kind of homely charm. Whether you’re looking for a memorable meal in Crewkerne or just passing through Somerset, The Crooked Swan is a must. It would be remiss to visit Crewkerne and not step inside. Time and again, I’ve looked at the bill expecting an error—because for the level of food, drink, and service on offer, the pricing feels like too good to be true, but it is true and very reasonable! It’s a place full of atmosphere, quirks, and local charm. Even the regulars are the kind who greet newcomers with conversation and warmth. The Crooked Swan doesn’t just serve great food—it offers something rarer: a proper experience.

Absolutely stunning Sunday dinner at The Crooked Swan, portion sizes were generous, taste was out of this world and everything cooked to perfection. Atmosphere was great with a decor to match. If you’re debating booking a table, I would not hesitate! Well worth the visit, we will be back! Megan and the staff were most welcoming and all very friendly. Well done guys! We definitely need to go back to try the other dishes. Oh and the freshly baked cookie dessert….best we’ve ever had, and definitely finished off the meal nicely.

Had an excellent meal with three others on a Thursday night in February. 2 had flat iron steak and chips, one gnocchi and one a pork dish; plus three puds to share. We all spontaneously agreed the food was really well cooked, correctly seasoned and of correct proportion. With several drinks and a bottle of wine £50 per head - which is exactly on par for a great meal.

Pub to the right, restaurant to the left and bar straight ahead as you walk in. Straight away it felt warm an inviting, and pretty lively for a Tuesday evening. I'm here with work, so asked for a table for one and was seen to straight away. A good and varied selection of local beers on cask and keg, including a local microbrewery from Chard, just down the road. Possibly the nicest pork steak I have ever eaten. The two guys working front of house this evening were fantastic, a credit to the establishment.

Seated in the dining room, given menus and ordered drinks to be told there’s an issue with the kitchen and we could not order food. Won’t be returning as locals as we felt lied to, something not right, if you can’t serve - close the doors.

We were staying at a local air BnB and popped in here for dinner without making a booking. Luckily they had a spare table and we had a great meal. Highly recommend the hanger steak. The waitress was very attentive.

Traffic noise excessive, tractors busy all night, poor acoustics. Room nicely appointed, bed comfortable, but pillows need replacing. Excellent food and pleasant staff.

I always try to give honest reviews of where I dine. Having eaten here a few times now, I have to say this visit was a bit flat. Initial reception at the bar was uninspiring, with barely a welcome from the staff. I have to say our biggest gripe was with the serving staff. I found them to be at best, inept. They just didn't seem to be bothered with looking after the paying guest. I have to say the food was good, although some of the details confused me. Take our sharing starter, a baked Camembert. We were given half a slice of bread each with which to eat it. After only a couple of dips, the bread was gone, leaving a good third left. Having failed to gain the attention of the waiting staff, we gave up and ate the rest with our forks. Likewise, with my main, a decent portion of meat, and a small ramekin of rice. Surfice to say, we won't be returning.

This was my second stay here with adult family. The rooms are opulent and very comfortable. Lots of art and antiquities throughout the hotel, restaurant and bar area. For the second time the food was excellent the scallops were fresh and plump with a delicious sauce. Our main course were steak ,tomahawk pork bream and lamb all perfectly cooked with accompanying vegetables and sauces great portions. Finishing off with a generous cheese board lemon posset and scrummy and light sticky toffee pudding. Breakfast is included and was delicious well presented and generous. The service was smiley and professional the chef came out and had a chat with us too. We will be back. The margaritas were great too.

We stumbled upon this place whilst wandering around Crewkerne looking for a Sunday roast. Luckily The Crooked Swan could fit us in and we were greeted with a warm welcome and a smile. We ordered drinks which came to our table quickly, and our food order was taken - we both went for the belly pork after seeing it arrive at the table next door! It came with a huge homemade Yorkshire pudding, roasties, some delicious vegetables and lovely gravy. Everything was really tasty and we left very happy and looking forward to going back!

In Ilchester for a car service and dropped into the Ilchester Arms for breakfast. They weren't cooking at the time but they made a Bacon sandwich for me anyway ❤️ Really very good of them, friendly service that you remember. Thanks !!

We recently had two meals with friends at the Black Swan: a Sunday lunch and an evening meal. Both were excellent. One of our party is Vegan and she was impressed to have such a wide range of choices on the menu as it’s usually just a burger - take it or leave it. The skinny chips were spot on too. The young wait staff are unfailingly polite, efficient and well trained. My only regret is that there were not more people eating, especially on the Wednesday evening when we were the only ones, although I appreciate February is a quiet month for hospitality.
