Absolutely fantastic lunch. The Ploughmans salads are the pride and joy of the chef whose name escapes me but I think it’s Mary or Maria? Well all we can say is no wonder they are her pride and joy because it’s wonderful! Well done chef! The ham was delicious, the pie tasty and the presentation is wonderful. The turkey and cranberry salad bowl was absolutely delicious and a really good value for money size. The service was first class, friendly, prompt and welcoming. A real find down the alleyway and we would definitely visit again.

Staff are friendly, work closely with the kitchen and together, are very flexible; easily accommodating the fussiest of eaters. Lovely, relaxed atmosphere which is spotlessly clean. The food is reliably delicious (southern fried chicken fillets def worth a mention along with cheddar omelette), portions are bountiful and excellent value for money. It’s no surprise it’s a favourite.

Cromwells was always our goto place for a light lunch or a full dinner (at lunch time). After some management and kitchen changes, we noticed a decline in food standards. On our last visit, we opted for mushroom soup. When it arrived it did not look like mushroom soup, nor did it taste like mushroom soup. My partner decided not to finish it. I added seasoning and carried on. No-one asked if it was alright. We had to grab a tabled as it was vacated by another couple. We sat with the dirty plates etc. and were ignored. My partner went to ask for menus at which point the table was cleared. When I went to pay, no-one asked if it was alright or did we enjoy it. Overall a very disappointing experience. Our last visit after about 15 years of being a customer.

It's been over twenty years since I last came here and I can honestly say it hasn't changed from what I remember - In the best possible way. The warm and cosy ambiance, the smells and decor left me very nostalgic. My fiancé travelled from Brasil to be here and she praised it as one of the nicest cafés she's been to in England. Thank you for keeping it up all of these years.

I visited today for the first time & all I can say is that the food & service was 10/10. I was served by Mel who is very friendly and welcoming. The food was traditional home cooked food and priced well The decor itself was very cosy and reminded me of a cafe in the Cotswolds I will definitely be visiting again as it’s a great place, friendly & they’ve kept the character of an old building which is fab!

This is our third visit in recent months to Cromwells Tea Rooms and we weren’t disappointed. Previous visits have been lunch but today was breakfast. The food was as always amazing and the staff very attentive. Ensuring we were attended to promptly once seated and allowing enough time for us to view the menu before taking our order. I can’t believe I’ve lived in Pontefract for 12 years and until this year didn’t realise this gem of a place existed.

Entered at 14:45 on Saturday 29th July and asked what time they closed - they advised us 15:30 - fair enough !! Before telling us what they could offer us they told us what they couldn’t - which was hot food. That was ok too as we only wanted hot drinks and cakes. They then told us we couldn’t go upstairs - we didn’t want to as we had a pushchair with us. By this point we felt more of an inconvenience than a valued customer. The drinks and cakes purchased were to a reasonable standard. The hostess was also very vocal to my friends daughter when she accidentally knocked something made out of fabric from the window display. This shocked and upset her.

We give three stars, primarily because of the service of the staff. We ordered soup of the day This was on the menu as the chefs special and to be perfectly frank it was almost tasteless and very hot, it was also served on plates which were very hot also, and unfortunately the bread roll and butter were on them and guess what happened to the butter. we also ordered a sandwich and although it was okay, it wasn’t great and again we felt it that in flavour. I would emphasise this was our visit, and our opinion may not be the same as others as there are lots of great reviews.

Cromwells has always been our go-to place in Pontefract for a drink or snack for many years now, and we have always been very happy with the food, the service and friendly staff. Today, however, hardly a smile from the staff, who seemed to pre-occupied and didn't seem to know what they were doing. Our order of a cafetiere of decaff coffee resulted in a pot of tea. Two other customers were completely ignored by the three staff who were huddled over their electronic order devices. They only got sight of menus when they stopped a member of staff rushing into the kitchen. Oh, by the way, we don't appreciate being called guys!!

We found this lovely little restaurant on a cold and windy December day and got a lovely warm welcome. We were a party of four and all cleared our plates in this lovely down to earth no nonsense restaurant. So fed up of menus trying to put on. a “modern twist” with lashings of chilli and garlic etc, this was proper home cooked food. I can recommend the posh fish finger sandwich and they have a lovely selection of cakes and desserts all washed down with a pot of tea. We will return, thank you.

We were surprised and pleased that there were none in Pontefract just independent cafes. On my day off I take my Mum shopping to Pontefract and we always call for a spot of lunch, the atmosphere is friendly and so are the staff. On our last visit we both ordered omelette and as always the food is exceptional however I was disappointed when the bill came as I only wanted the omelette and not the chips and salad that usually comes with this meal and was charged the exactly the same price which apparently because it’s my decision not to have the salad and chips makes no difference it’s my choice. Me and my boyfriend went for some lunch after our exams and the food was lovely, extremely tasty and well presented. I had a tuna melt panini and my boyfriend had the homemade quiche and they were both equally as nice. We ordered some desserts after and when they were brought over the waitress stopped and made us pay as we were about to eat, she hung it in front of my boyfriends face and made him go pay inside immediately, she wouldn’t leave until he went in and paid. I thought that this was extremely rude and not fair that just because we’re a young couple she assumed that we were going to do a runner. I am writing this review in desperate hope that any negative and personal vendettas are ignored. Cromwells is a small family run business that excels not only in customer service but in serving great quality food at excellent prices, I work in Pontefract and have my lunch there everyday and the staff (the same staff that have worked there since the day it opened) are fabulous every single one of them! Everyone makes me feel so welcome, and I have never in my whole time had a bad or even average meal at Cromwells they have all been absolutely excellent! I do think it's a huge shame people feel the need to slate such a hard working lovely bunch of people when not a single person would be nothing but nice to people. I was in the restaurant when the two lady's below were in and none of what happened is true what actually happened is they walked out of the restaurant with out paying, point blank refused and they had a restaurant full of people as witnesses! The manager Denise is the nicest women you will ever meet and goes out of her way to please absolutely everyone! So I urge everyone on trip advisor to ignore any negative reviews and to honestly try out this amazing restaurant in the heart of Pontefract! And please to anyone else with personal vendettas don't take to ruining a families business. Keep going Cromwells and your great team!

Such a shame to post such a negative review! This place should carry a health warning and maybe even have bouncers on the door to protect customers from the staff!!Dare to complain and feel the wrath of the staff and the manager. For almost 30 Years we have special memories of this popular cafe. However following a family get together for breakfast all these happy memories have been erased. Our family breakfasts were served and all the eggs were hard, easy mistake so we politely raised this and the offending eggs removed from the plate onto side plates in front of our eyes whilst our breakfasts were left standing on the table!Oh well not good but not the end of the world. Then the new eggs arrived, uncooked and greasy and possibly bursting with salmonella! We again raised this and the staff customer service was now beginning to question us and be intimidating.Third Time lucky perhaps but no.Enough was enough so we again raised our concerns and this is where staff were aggressive and rude!Staff behaved liked animals appearing on the Jeremy Kyle show in front of shocked onlookers and my Grand Children who were now becoming distressed. One of the staff Lynette(yes sorry but named and shamed)had to be restrained by other members of staff. This disgusting outburst ruined a special family breakfast and all because of sub standard food.It is such a shame that this place has gone downhill and on speaking to other locals it is likely that this establishment will sadly not stand the test of time.TO BE THREATENED and treated in such a way is unbelievable in the 21ST Century and we are still pondering whether or not to report this to the police. On a positive there are numerous other cafes in Pontefract with very welcoming staff and friendly locals.DON'T VISIT HERE!!

Me and my family have been visiting this cafe for 30 years, almost every week. I have noticed that the level of service in the last 12 months has diminished rapidly and so has the quality of food. Today we went for breakfast with the children. We were given a breakfast with well over cooked rubbery eggs.In this instance we requested ,in a polite manner, that the eggs be replaced. To which we were offered 2 very undercooked eggs. We explained this to the waitress serving us and she looked annoyed and expressed this to us with a her poor attitude. The eggs were then replaced with 1 nicely cooked egg. They must of forgot the other . We ate our breakfast whilst thrown looks of disapproval from the 2 waitresses who were nearby. When taking the bill to pay we explained to the manager as to what had happened and asked if we could be refunded for 1 of the breakfasts. The manager offered to refund 1 egg. We explained as to how we have always been regular and loyal customers and had not had any issues in the past. Before we left the cafe we were verbally attacked by Lynette, one of the waitresses who had to be physically pulled away. We were then told that it was probably best if we didn't be use Cromwells anymore. Absolutely disgusted to be treated in this manner. Never experienced anything like this in my life. An uncomfortable breakfast and a ruined experience

On a busy Saturday lunch on a whim and needing cheering up we took a slight detour off the main street to this little cafe, and were very pleasantly surprised.A lovely welcome from friendly, smiling staff brightened our spirits immediately. The atmosphere, though busy, was of a friendly local where everyone smiled, staff and customers alike. The menu offered a variety, from simple snacks to more elaborate meals. Expecting to settle for fish and chips or a jacket potato I was tempted by a chicken and bacon dish that I had never heard of and ordered, with a little trepidation (was I being too risky with my fussy habits). My oh my, the meal arrived looking like a dream on a hot plate, my husband had opted for the chicken, bacon and mushroom pie and oh how his eyes lit up! Cutting gingerly into our meals we took the first nervouse bite, would taste match visual pleasure? YES! Fresh, tasty, tender, hot and oh so very very nice! We devoured our meals with relish! My goodness this little cafe was not at all what we expected. A fantastic meal, and at a very very good price. 2 large meals, with drinks for £20, and that was about the most expensive. We left feeling full and enjoyed an afternoon of window shopping, and a little spending.Thank you to all in Cromwell's cafe, we have recently moved into the area and look forward to many more visits to enjoy good food, great service and an uplifting atmosphere. If you are in Pontefract I encourage you to visit Cromwell's cafe for a coffe, breakfast, traditional snack or a filling and tasty meal, all accompanied by a lovely relaxing atmosphere.

I visited for the first time today with a friend. My ploughman's lunch was excellent value for money and I thoroughly enjoyed the generous helpings of gammon ham, pork pie, mature cheddar cheese, pickled onions, coleslaw, Branston and a warm, crusty baguette. My friend said his fresh salmon salad was equally delicious. We had proper tea too, with individual teapots, hot water jugs and a generous jug of milk to share. Tea served like this seems to be increasingly rare these days as cafes increasingly provide portion-controlled, foil-topped milk 'thimbles' and you have to ask for hot water, so we very much appreciated our 'proper cuppas.' We will be back!

I regularly lunch here with friends. The food is always excellent and well presented, with a varied menu and a specials board which changes on a regular basis. The service is second to none, all the waitresses are attentive and efficient some have been working there for absolutely years and know their job so well.

Love the food there as its always been tasty and seems home made. However the last time I went for lunch I waited over 40 minutes for it to be served. There wasn't even an apology. Even though I had to chase them on where it was!!! My husbands arrived whilst I sat and watched him ear. Not ideal. So if you have time to kill great place. It's tucked away slightly and it's a bit of a squeeze when you go in. The cushions on the benches need adhesive as it slips when you sit on them. Overall a nice place but improvements needed.

My wife and I decided on the spur of the moment to have lunch in Cromwells. It was very busy but as we went upstairs somebody was leaving. Immediately the very pleasant waitress cleared the table, brought the menus, explained them, and took an order for our drinks, which again were promptly served. The cooked food order was not very long coming, and both orders were well presented, well cooked, and more than sufficient quantity. Both the service and the food were excellent, and at a very reasonable cost. Will certainly recommend, and we will be back.

Lovely olde tea shoppe! It's always busy, so that tells you something! We went upstairs cos downstairs was heaving, so was upstairs when we got there! Our orders were taken quickly and the food ( as always) was lovely! High praise indeed to the lovely waitress who reminded us of Julie Walters' Mrs Overall.( This is a compliment cos Mrs Overall is BRILLIANT ! )She was highly attentive to our table and so pleasant in what is such a busy environment . Lots of love to her, keep up the great work and keep on being lovely!!

I do enjoy a trip to Cromwells, largely as it's something totally different to pretty much any other tea room you find in the district. This visit it was a steak and onion Panini, which I found a bit fattier than I was totally happy with. Not bad enough to complain though. my wife had egg mayonnaise sandwiches. Both meals were nicely presented with salad in coleslaw, with a pot of tea each it came to just under £15.00.Staff were a blur as the place was packed. Still friendly and polite.

We called for lunch whilst out shopping, it was extremely interesting to read about the history of the castle and the roll this café played during those past times, as this building was hundreds of years old and had loads of history. We read this information on the menu whilst we waited for our home cooked lunch, which did not disappoint.

Tucked away down Mauds Yard is this pleasant looking cafe. Decent menu with a good choice of hot and cold food. We were seated at a table (where the table cloth was stained with the previous occupants food) and given a menu. A couple then sat at the table next to us and their order was taken almost immediately - grr. (We had closed our menus and were awaiting service!) Food arrived quickly and was fair - but the omelette was overcooked and had a dry texture and the jacket potato had obviously been blasted in the microwave as it was 'soggy' with no textured skin. Finally, I don't want the tray of open mayonnaise off another persons table - who knows what they have been doing with it. Sorry folks, not good enough in this day and age.

While at the Pontefract liquorice festival the wife and I stumbled upon Cromwells tea rooms and what a pleasent suprise it was the service was fast and pleasent. The food, although I did not sample the entire menu did look good and the prices were reasonable. The establishment also has a suprisingly large amount of seating both upstairs and down. Would recommend.

Been ordering regularly from here for about a year but today I bought what was assumed a "fresh" cream scone to find the scone itself stale, the fresh cream was hard and the fruit had gone mouldy.... not sure how long they had been sat there but it's definitely put me off. Called to let them know so they could check the others and the only response I got was thanks for letting me know.... no apology or offer of a refund.

Low quality, cold cooked breakfast! Sticky table and chairs with bad coffee. Seemed friendly though. With a little attention to detail it could be fantastic.
