Crisp & Dry in Torridge

First visit ever having lived in the vicinity for a number of years. Ordered fish and chips (hardly a surprise for them I wouldn't have thought!!) The result was over-cooked, hard and tasteless. Mediocre would be a compliment. Avoid!

I am 74 and worked in a fish and chip shop for 7 years prior to joining the forces. I can honestly say these were the worst fish and chips ever. The fish was poor quality and the batter too thick and soggy. The chips looked and tasted like they had been rewarmed up from a previous frying. They were so bad I had to bin them; even my dog wouldn't eat them! AVOID.

We had a takeaway from here whilst staying at a local campsite. It was just not very nice. The fish was ok but very greasy and the chips were just awful. Really overcooked, dry and tasteless. The staff weren’t very attentive either. Would not recommend.

Fantastic food again. Thankyou, delivered hot and tasted great, non greasy and enjoyed by all. Can never understand why people complain about having to wait, just ring, and order in advance, its not difficult.

Had fish and chips here and the chips were very poor had more bits of chips than whole chips, and they were dry and hard. The fish was ok. But definitely had a lot better, will not be returning.

We ordered large chips, jumbo bartered sausage, fish cakes and 1/2 pounder with cheese for delivery. The price was really good (suspiciously good), but unfortunately once we unwrapped it all (delivery driver was gone of course) I was confronted with the most disappointing burger ever, especially considering the £6 price tag. It was clearly a 1/4 pound piece of meat, hardly any cheese in it and no salad at all. Come on, a good big burger is not hard to get right!

I have had the BEST takeaway food ever!!! Fish was superb and the chips "crisp and dry "!!! Will definitely return and recommend to others.

I visited on Tuesday 24th November, lady frying was extremely rude to the member of staff working with her. Lady on the phone/ wrapping our order was a delight and always had a smile on her face and good attitude. Shame they can’t all be like that. Other than that good food

Food was ready to collect and the staff were friendly even though they had a queue waiting and the phone didn't stop ringing! The portions were big and the food was all well cooked the family all loved the chips especially!! Best fish and chips in Holsworthy would definitely go there again if we come back for another visit

We ordered two fish and chip dinners , and two sausages and found them very delicious! We went during the coronavirus pandemic and it was a pleasant experience , I wore a mask and so did they and they left the food on the counter to allow for minimum contact .It was easy to order over the phone and overall a good experience.

Because of Covid times, I rang through our order. It was freshly cooked and ready for us on arrival. Smooth process and such friendly people working their. Good fish and chips too! Thoroughly recommend.

A basic Devon market town Fish and Chip Shop serving good quality fish well cooked in lovely batter with real chips. Mushy peas finish it off to perfection. Fast service from friendly staff. Parking easy in town square where one can sit on bench under the tree to eat.

Great fish and chips and great friendly helpful service . Highly recommend . Placed order over the phone so was not waiting around and arrived when told and he was just pulling the fish out of the fryer .

We have a family of 8 ordered 3 x cod and chips and 5 x jumbo sausage and chips, I have to say it was unbelievable, perfectly cooked, good presentation, family were all stuffed when we finished, plus excellent price, and delivery was on time.can’t recommend enough, can’t wait till next time.

We got fish and chips here on a Wednesday evening as we weren't able to eat in the pub nearby. It was reasonably busy but we must have waited well over half an hour to be served. With a queue of people in the shop and lots of phone orders the place just couldn't cope, and didn't appear to be done very efficiently either.At least the food was good when we finally got it!

we live in a rural area and stumbled upon Crisp & Dry - a more than average piece of fish - it was honestly a great taste, the layer of batter wasnt about hiding the fish to make it 'seem large' - the batter was pefect, great colour, crispy and the piece of cod was moist. Chips non greasey and tasted fantastic - mushy peas hot, tasty and just right. Staff were friendly, efficient - fish cooked whilst waiting - that is a huge 10/10 - unlike alot of other chippies where the fish seems to have sat there for a while it was fresh. Large portion of fish and chips. Well worth the 8 mile round trip. Lastly a place when you contact them on facebook page reply was less than 30 seconds. Would recommend to anyone of any age and visitors to the beautiful place we call home it is well worth a visit :) Just to add - not sure if paid before or after - i think it was before but i believe if the order was awful the staff would of sorted it out asap.

Very nice tasty fish and chips,clean place and staff had clean hands,the staff were very nice,parking a little tricky buts that's only because it's in the town,I would definitely go there again and the price is also good

Went here 2nd May 19. Had large cod and standard chip. Cod was cooked well as were the chips. One draw back was that the batter on the fish was puddingy and not nice. The meal was served up in a box, quickly and efficiently.

Have lived in Holsworthy for over a year, and use these guys at least 3 times a month, the battered fish, and the battered sausages are always good and the chips are excellent. These guys are friendly and genuinely enjoy what they do.. Thanks!

Had lovely fish and chips here. Only downfall was the 25 minute wait. Everything was cooked to order, pretty sure to cook quite a bit of fish at a time on a busy Friday evening would be much better.

I placed an order for 32 individual meals for the office I work at and everything was cooked on time, received hot and was perfect. The quality of the food was outstanding (mainly Cod & Haddock) and all staff were extremely happy with their choices. I cannot recommend this place enough. Well done to the staff hear a fantastic business the locals should support.

Back after 3 years and the food is just as good now as it was then, i had fish this time and it was brilliant,still the chip portions are slightly less than where we live but they are better so that makes up for it, well done for another excellent meal

After being recommended that the fish and chips were good, it was not the case. Never to bother again.

We knew that the shop had new owners and Andrew Bailey always makes great changes to existing operations especially in Holsworthy ! We have now had Fish and Chips 3 times in the last couple of months and they are always excellent and full of flavour. You can order ahead or just pop in and very pleasant staff too. A really enjoyable experience all round !

How can you overcook fish and undercook chips at a FISH & CHIP shop? Well done. You’ve managed just that. Very poor food, unsure why this “plaice” (geddit!) is so highly rated.

Couldn't be bothered to cook so thought we would have take out. Had bad food here previously but thought after reading good reviews we would give it another go. What a mistake that was!!!! Chips were anaemic, rubbery and tasted disgusting. Chucked not cooked properly and also tasted disgusting. Even the dog wouldn't eat any of It!!!!

Picked up cod & chips here with the wife to eat on our last day in Devon as we did not want to cook and the local Indian did look appetising. Everything was freshly cooked and the fish was first class. Had to wait while 15 minutes as it was cooked and portions were of a good size to. Would we return yes we would.

Had alot better fish & chips elsewhere. The chips were absolutely swimming in oil and were not tasty at all. The cod was white and moist but again the batter was too greasy so let it down, the scampi was over cooked and hard, only 7 small bits???? Big stingy on portion sizes, very expensive for what we had, completely let down, half of it went in the bin. Phoned up and placed the order not knowing the prices and they couldn't even tell you on the phone, need to sort out their order taking process.

Lovely little chip shop. Pleasant staff and good service. Food cooked to order, so hot and tasty. Large portions with the ‘regular’ portion of cod being huge along with a ‘mountain’ of chips. Would definitely visit again.

Between placing my order and being served I was waiting over half an hour. When I got it home I was horrified at the portion size. To pay over £12.00 for two fish and chip suppers and find that they were child portions was an insult. I can't fault the food itself as what I had was tasty. I was offered a replacement meal and have been back twice but have been put off by the amount of people waiting for their food. I will continue going back to the fish and chip shop I use in another town.

Reading the reviews I thought this chip shop wasn’t going to be that great. But it was totally the opposite!...

Absolutely shocking. No Haddock available, only a few pieces of Cod left & this was at 6:45pm. Waited 30 minutes for the food to be cooked, yet was never told that there would be such a wait & only ordered a few fish & portions of chips. Fish wasn't cooked properly as it was slimey (even the dog wasn't very carried away with it), batter was really pale, peas were clearly out of a tin & were watery, chips were over cooked & dried out. The fryer who appeared to be the owner didn't sepem to have a clue what he was doing. Needs shutting down to be honest.

Not a good experience. 40 minutes to wait for fish & chips and a sausage & chips! Didn't get a clue there was such a wait until 15mins had past, only a few people in the shop - they could have said when I ordered?!

I don't like complaining about places but I'm afraid I had to on this occasion. I'm used to walking into a chippy, ordering and being served ready to walk out within minutes. We ordered (not a big order-only for 4 persons) and waited 30 minutes for them to cook and put our order together. I thought the wait would be worth it but sadly it wasn't. The portions weren't too big, the chips were ok, the curry sauce and mushy peas were bland. My spring roll wasn't cooked right. The batter on the sausage was bizarre. It tasted of flour(?) and had a strange texture! To top it off they didn't sell gravy??!! (Is this a Midlands thing??!!) The servers were really lovely and even apologised for the wait. Sorry guys would not recommend or return again

No haddock available but the fish we had (cod) was very tasty. Large pieces of fish but the chip portion was quite small which is unusual. Sausages were also good which the kids had.

We got soaked in a rainstorm in Boscastle so we were not in any condition to visit a restaurant, plan b came in and we decided to take some fish back to our cottage. With the addition of our bread & butter along with a mug of tea we were satisfied. Very tasty fish cooked to perfection.

This was scrumptious. The owner/staff were really welcoming and helpful. Popped in to ask what time they closed and ended up ordering for 6 people later on by phone. Everything was freshly cooked and they even saved the last home made veggie pasty for my daughter. Could not fault the taste, price or service. Even allow eating inside if you have dogs with you, so gets better and better.

Went here on recommendation and was very disappointed.... chips were greasy and batter on a very dry piece of fish was very thick and greasy What made it worse is that I really fancied fish and chips having not had it for a while and would have rather had gone without !

We had called in because of a need for a quick food fix and were delighted with the excellent product and very tasty fish and chips. Good service, pretty quick and a good price. Will call again soon

If you want something to eat and are happy with big portions and straightforward food then its for you.

Freshly cooked Hake and nice crispy chips. Efficient,pleasant service and very clean place. Good parking very close by.

Only had Saveloy and chips but what we had was excellent. Place was spotless and staff were really polite. Food rating was five (on door) so easy one to recommend. No parking outside but plenty of spaces in parking area if you cross road from shop then walk up little alley way (no distance at all).

Our fish was cooked to order, and was crisp and well cooked. Chips were fine and large portion sufficient for 2 people.

I went to the Crisp &Dry for a takeaway and it was terrible the fish had soggy batter and slimy and the chips are what we call pale faces I would not recommended this fish and chip shop anyone.

We have tried it now on several occasions since the change of ownership and can only say that the chips have never been golden and lush but always cold limp and greasy. We have gone back saying we will give another go but it never improves and this weekend the chips even had a tangy taste to them. The batter is cold and chewy, not golden and crispy as it used to be with the last owners. We won't return again!

This used to be a great chippy. Now has new owners so we thought we'd see if it is still good. Sadly, its not. Very expensive, £18.80 for 3 cod and chips and a bottle of vinegar. The chips were soggy and stuck together, and the fish was dry. My husband used to be in the fish and chips trade and he believes they are using frozen fish rather than fresh and probably palm oil. We were really disappointed. Used to be the best chippy for miles around under the previous owners. What a shame the new owners havent kept to the same standard.

we decide on trying the fish and chip shop to save cooking on our last night, we ordered jumbo battered sausage large chips curry sauce, everything was cooked to order, sausage was really crispy and fresh, chips were good but the portion was less than a small portion anywhere else, but overall not bad

We come down to Holsworthy every Easter with all of my family and we always make several trips in the week to this chippie. Everything tastes great and is cooked to perfection. Beware do not go near the end of the evening as once things have run out you have had your chips! The two ladies that run it are always very friendly and there is a good selection not just fish and the usual but also some tasty wraps.

Very friendly staff, always clean & tidy, best of all the chips have always been fresh and the fish is great with tasty batter. Only takeaway food is served which is a shame.

Chips are always double cooked to perfection the fish is awesome, today i had a battered jumbo sausage this places is knee's above any chippy in holsworthy be it "pub food ect" Everything about this chippy is to PERFECTION no complaints, no quarrels... This is 1 of my fav chippies to ALWAYS visit.

On a recent holiday to North Devon we passed through Holsworthy on numerous occasions so often found ourselves stopping off to take some dinner back to Bude. To our delight Crisp and dry fish and chips were divine. We all really enjoyed the meal and the only negative is that it is not our local!!

Freshly cooked to order. Fresh local fish delivered every day. Limited opening times but being local you know when they are open. Great Fish & Chips and friendly staff.

I sent my husband in to get some chips. Half an hour later, I was still waiting for him in the car. Apparently, it was insanely busy, and he says never again. However, they are some of the nicest chips I've had in a long while, so I hope he changes his mind! Maybe I won't send him in on a Friday tea time again...

In my view this is the best FISH n CHIP shop in the town, quite often a small extra fish in the bag.

Crisp and Dry sell the best takeaway fish and chips. On weekday lunchtimes they sell a pensioners portion for £3.60 which is more than adequate. The normal portions are huge. The fish is first class and the batter is light and the right thickness. They sell a range of other dishes.

until 2 years ago our family lived in holsworthy and always used crisp and dry an excelent fish and chip shop the food always good and the girls there very pleasant, true sometimes if they are busy and you have to wait for your order but the wait is worth it knowing its all freshly cooked to order, my trick if it was busy was to place my order,the girls would give me an idea how long it would be,then i had just enough time to pop next door to the white hart for a quick pint, then back to crisp and dry to collect my order ! great grub, great chippy, lovely girls !keep up the good work

Staying locally with a large group of friends, we felt disinclined to cook on our last evening so searched TripAdvisor for a nearby fish and chip shop. Crisp and Dry seemed the best bet and we are so glad we chose them. Despite a largish order for 11, all the food was beautifully cooked to order (with just enough time to nip next door for a quick pint whilst waiting) and whether fish, chip, sausage or spring roll was very tasty. Service was excellent and friendly and I only wish we lived closer to visit again.Thank you!

At the end of a weeks holiday with friends staying at a local cottage we decided it was time for a take away. We had worked up an appetite with some mountain biking and then went for fish, sausage and chips for 11. The kids loved the sausages and the fish was demolished by the adults. With chip butties all round we had a great tea which was all cooked fresh. Take a night off and enjoy!

Living in Launceston there are at least three fish and chip shops within one mile of our home - however we make a round 30 mile trip to Holsworthy because we find the fish and chips/scampi and chips to be the best we have ever had!!! Having read some of the earlier reviews - yes there are occasions you have to wait but let me assure you it is worth the wait!!! The only request I would add is that Holsworthy Council put another seat within the Memorial car park to avoid the odour lingering in my car the following day!!!!

The best fish and chip shop in the area. Always a friendly welcome. All the food is specially cooked to order, so it's fresh and piping hot. At busy times you may have to wait a little longer, but you'll never be disappointed. Well worth a visit.

When you order your take- away you know you will have to wait WHY we'll everything is cooked to order even if you order just chips.Crisp and Dry is an appropriate title because that's what you get ,and you could sit down and eat out of the paper without getting oily fingers,and to add to that is the quality of both the fish and the chips which is excellent.We are lucky to have them in the TownKC

I would say these were the best fish and chips locally by far. So much so even my parents travel from Bude to have them. You will most definitely have to wait whilst there cooked but at least there hot and fresh.

i have been in there a few time with my friends, relatively fast service, (they did well considering it was busy) but it was worth waiting for, delicious chips and polite service, worth a visit if your in the area

Food is always excellent, and cooked fresh to order, you have to wait at busy times, but it's worth it not to have greasy warmed up food. I understand that one of the staff is undergoing chemo and opening times can vary at the moment, so it's best to check first.
