The food was nice and the portions v generous Recommend asking for less salt as we found it quite salty the 2 times we got take away from here Love the gravy though

Today was a pleasant day and being a keen motorcyclist I decided to take my motorcycle to Taffs fish and chip shop in torrington North. Devon. Speaking as a local person and like to support local businesses as much as I can. I decided to get myself, fish and chips on this evening so called in at Taffs torrington. The place was nice. Place was clean and it had a gentle flow of customers, but I'm very sad to say that when I asked for my fish and chips I thought it would be something special being a little local village setting the beautiful country side of Devon, but sadly this wasn't the case. When I departed with my purchase of fish and chips, I went to eat my purchase on torrington common. On opening the packet I found a portion of chips which wasn't that great but the sorry state of affair was the size of the fish. There is I thinking I was going to get the size of half a shark but the only sharks I could see were the ones behind the counter selling the fish and chips as I was very disappointed with the portion of fish. The size of the fish fillet about 4 and 1/2 to 5 in long it represented and overweight fish finger. This was most disappointing as the price did not reflect on the portion given for the grand of fish and chips and one Can of soft drink at £11.00, for me to return or for anybody to think about going there would be foolish as you're not getting value for money

This place is always spotless, staff are friendly and food good. The new loaded chips are great value. I had the Korean bbq chicken box and it was lovely. Will try the katsu one next time

What a feast! Had katsu chicken with proper chip shop chips, and a cheeky side of onion rings, which was the perfect combination. Plenty of freely available seating so we ate it in the dry. Will definitely be returning. 😋👍

Tried the Taff's 1/4 burger tonight from the new menu and it was amazing. Can't wait to try the other items from the new menu

I found overall it was very good food battered sausage was nice the chips wear ok the fish was a let down the batter was a bit soggy not very bubbly and crunchy.Apart from that service was good the staff very friendly.

Fish and chips were dry and hard - really bad as if they had been reheated a few times. For £17+ it was rubbish and a complete waste of money. Will avoid Taffs in future - such a shame. You need to do better!!

Stopped by whilst travelling. couldn't believe how awful the food was. Most of it ended up in the bin, how can you get fish and chips so wrong

Fantastic fish and chips! We really enjoyed our meal, the fish was really delicious and freshly cooked and the chips were lovely, crispy and perfectly cooked.

First time visiting here for take away. Staff very friendly and efficient. Found the food disappointing, fish was very small and flat (unlike cod) and batter thin and soggy. Chips tasted as if they were reheated not fresh but may just have been a one off, will try again another time.

This has to be the best chip shop in North Devon if not further afield. You get great food and a great smile from everyone here.

Fairly limited memu. Had a mini cod & chips and boy was it mini, not worth the £6.00 charge. Other meals we had were ok.

Had a mini cod and chips and wish I got the large!! Cod was so flaky and fresh, batter was gorgeous and the chips were so tasty!! We decided to eat in which was well worth doing, food was fresh and the atmosphere was nice and cosy. Staff super friendly, will definitely be back!!

Decent fish and chips always has been. Clean and decent inside also. As with anything prices going up and portions often getting smaller however still worth it and will definitely go again

Ordered scampi and chips also cod and chips + coffee. Fish freshly cooked delicious. Chips luke warm, coffee poor quality. We live locally, Taffs used to be excellent but we won't be going there again.

Stopped in a few days ago for takeaway after google recommendations, service was excellent, with very friendly staff! The food was good with generous portions. Would highly recommend!

Discovered this place by chance whilst in the area. Food was cooked fresh, service was great and friendly. Great choice of food and good sized portions at great prices. Also able to sit inside, good choice of hot drinks available too. Highly recommend

Wow was very pleased with our fish and chips the portions are very good and excellent quality. The staff very polite and friendly and the restaurant area was immaculate although we had take away. Looking forward to my next fish and chip supper

Excellent takeaway fish and chips

We're new to the area so we started to scope out the local takeaways, starting with Taffs. The fish was awesome, melt in the mouth. We also had chips, scampi and sausage and everything was perfectly cooked and the staff were friendly and responsive. The whole place was as clean as a whistle and modern with a seating area was also available. We'll be back very soon. Let's hope the other takeaways in Torrington can match this very high bar.

We always call here when in Great Torrington. Best fish and chips in the area, but the assistants have an aversion to sharing out a portion of chips between 2 fish, which is always offered at other places we go to. We enjoy taking our food to eat it at the tables on the Commons, with a flask of coffee and a dessert if the weather is nice

Food was very poor had curry sauce large sausages and chip sausages were not large curry sauce was very bland no taste at all very disappointing

Nice chips shame about the fish. Ordered large cod and chips. got a regular cod. When queried they said they don’t do large only regular (didn’t mention this when I ordered) but give me extra chips. Expensive for what I got. Disappointed. Smallest piece of cod ever. Shame I can’t upload photo!

We have been twice the first time we couldn't fault anything, the second time the food wasn't as good the chips were lukewarm, the fish was okay, I'm aware it can't always be the same but it's a review and I'm being honest

I understand that it’s a hard job but at least give a decent standard chip and when i asked for vinegar first he ignored me and carried on and put my salt on first just a tip make sure you put vinegar then salt but now my chips are salt coated cheers guys x

Spent £19.00 on fish and chips. The fish very thin and dry could hardly swallow. Also chips they were hot but also dry. To be honest I won’t be going there again. Very disappointed. Taffs are not the same anymore.

This is the place to go for chips, in my opinion. Everything is as it should be, portion sizes are good and I've no complaints about the food. Cardboard packaging demonstrates a willingness to minimise environmental footprint where possible. Downside: They seem to close at 8PM. I think this is a little early, compared to some of the other eating establishments in Torrington.

The staff had no idea what was going on, and our order was wrong on arrival home. Chips limp and greasy, and the onion rings were absolutely charcoaled, yet still greasy. We have ordered Taff's every other week for years and it absolutely has gone downhill. Sad to say we will be ordering from the other chippy in town to try and get a good meal!

Fish and chips were nice...coffee not so much

Whilst on holiday we got our dinner for eleven of us from here. The food was fresh, well coooked and very tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful. Service was quick and efficient. Our portions were good and it was great value for money.

Excellent fish and chips. This has to be the most pristine fish & chip shop I’ve ever visited. Spotlessly clean, everything was gleaming and very well set up for social distancing. Service was great and fish & chips were lovely, good portion size, well cooked and not at all greasy.

We had a takeaway from here last night whilst staying in the area. The food was really nice, all had fish and chips and I had a carton of curry. The portions are not enormous! Definitely could of had a few more chips! But… we all enjoyed 😊

stayed near great Torrington October 20 had fish and chips 1 night and sausage and chips another night cooked well and nice taste.

With regard to the review on 4/9/2020, in arguement portions are always on the larger size up north, and the quality not always as good. I feel that Taffs provide GOOD quality food at a price that is realistic. Also staff are friendly and always welcomed with a happy approach. Proud to have this shop in my town.

This was really no good service. The chicken was dry, the fish’s was tiny, the sausages were ok! If I put all four portions of chips together it would have given a normal size portion. Really embarrassing!

I have never seen such small overpriced portions!! The quality was average but the portions were so small. I wish I could post a picture!!

Shop well set out for safe collection of your fish and chips! Cash only, good variety of choices on the menu. Really tasty food, great recommendation. Worth the 5 stars.

Portions on the small side, also ordered small cod and chips meaning not a huge piece of fish and normal chips but got a weeny portion for a 5 year old. Obviously not being able to see them preparing the order I was not able to correct it but that is just because of how things are now. No idea how much it should have cost so even the price did not give me a clue that I wasn’t getting what I expected. Overall the quality was fine but just average. Staff were nice though.

We stay at Hill Farm which 5 minutes up the road. We had a large order for 15 people which was all correct and still piping hot by the time we brought it back to Hill Farm and settled down to eat it. Generous portions but not ovefaced.

In north Devon we are spoilt by having three top notch fish and chips shops, one in Barnstaple one in braunton and one in Torrington I travel from Barnstaple to Torrington just to eat at taffs as the food is well worth the journey, the food is consistently well cooked and we'll presented you will not be disappointed.Ian B

Taffs [ family run fish and chip shop in Great Torrington ] are the best I have ever tasted, Freshly cooked fish very large well prepared , chips cooked to perfection. lovely.

Fabulous Chip Shop in the heart of Devon. Family run for well over fifty years. I've been visiting for forty five! Nice sit in cafe also.

Best cod and chips in town. Portions are small and pricey but are tasty! Our weekly treat is tea from here. Kids get to eat it as an extra special treat. Thanks to the team

What else can you eat after an evening visit to Rosemoor? This is undoubtedly the best fish and chip shop in the immediate area. The only thing I would say is i do not understand why a portion of chips can be split between two fish. Every other establishment we visit does it, and some even ask if we want them splitting, but not Taffs as its apparently against fish fryer law

Food tasted great, good service, small portion for a large chips.

Taff’s has a reasonably wide range of fried food on offer either in the restaurant or, as we had, take away. The haddock was cooked to order and was very fresh with white, flaky flesh and good, crisp, not too thick batter. Chips were well-cooked and not even slightly greasy. Cod is the default option for fish so there was a wait of 10 minutes for our haddock. Two of our group had the sausages which were a tad smaller than they had hoped so two sausages would have been better, however, they were happy with the quality of their food.

Had a lovely fish and chip supper here. We dined in, with tea & plenty of bread and butter.Staff are very friendly.Just note that they don’t take card payment- but there is an atm up the road. We also got free parking outside as we visited in the evening.

A long established chippy which is still a family concern and although not huge there is a lovely seating area with good service and it is spotless.
