The Craven Arms in Appletreewick is more than just a pub – it’s a destination for anyone visiting the Dales. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a pint by the fire, a hearty meal after a day of hiking, or a cosy atmosphere to unwind, The Craven Arms delivers on all fronts. It’s the kind of place that feels timeless, offering a genuine taste of Yorkshire charm that’s hard to find elsewhere. The food was excellent, you can tell that they use quality ingredients and source it as locally as possible. The front of house staff really made the experience for us as they were al charming and hilarious. I don't think I've ever enjoyed interacting with pub staff more to be honest. Ivo is an absolute joy.

Absolutely amazing pub with the loveliest staff, incredible food and the best beer. We’ve been to the Craven Arms lots of times before but today really deserves a special mention. We turned up with no reservation on a fully booked Sunday and they managed to juggle things to squeeze us in. Despite us only having an hour, we didn’t feel rushed at all and the food and drinks came very promptly so we could enjoy at our leisure. Best pie and chips and a pint ever.

We booked to stay in the shepherd hut that sleeps 3 and couldn’t have had a better stay. From booking in to checking out the staff couldn’t have been more helpful or accommodating. The hut itself was spotless and had a lovely welcome pack with a range of drinks, fresh milk and pastries and cereal. Attention to detail was spot on with a well placed cold tap for the kettle and refilling water bottles. A nice selection of toiletries and a washing up sponge and liquid for cleaning mugs and glasses between uses. There was a helpful information file with well planned out walks for all abilities and useful local information. Overall the hut was perfect for the stay and the underfloor heating/burner made it so cosy. The bench outside was a perfect spot for a morning cuppa and some evening star gazing. The food at the pub was exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. Even plating up my sons meal to finish in the hut on a proper plate with cutlery. The staff were genuinely lovely and we will come back. The only tiny bit of feedback we shared was that with there being 3 of us we would have liked 3 of everything rather than 2 eg towels, mugs etc but in fairness when I mentioned it later thee staff said if we had let them know they would have resolved that straight away. Overall a brilliant experience.

This is a great spot for lunch if you're out exploring the Yorkshire Dales! My husband and I stopped here on our way back from Grassington to York and it certainly didn't disappoint. The pub itself is absolutely beautiful from the vibrant red leaves on the exterior to the traditional and cosy interior. The staff are incredibly welcoming and helpful. The food was lovely, we both had sandwiches for lunch and a side of fries and it was so tasty. My husband had the Ham Hock and Piccalilli sandwich, and I had the Sausage, Onion and smoked cheese which was a great combination! We were also tempted by the apple and pear crumble for dessert which was fantastic. It does get very busy so I would advise booking ahead. We called in on the off-chance and it was fully booked although they were able to accommodate us in one of the little huts outside. It was a beautiful day for it and although we were offered a table inside within a few minutes, we decided to stay in the hut because the views were so spectacular!

Ours was a table for 20 people on Thursday 29th aug. I was a chef and worked in restaurants for a long time and know how tricky a big table like ours could be. It was also busy with other tables. The pub gave us a pre order menu, and certain items had changed without them informing us. Ie, the houmous plate was with pesto puff pastry but changed to shop bought pitta bread. The crumble was vegan but became not vegan. The banana blossom was supposed to come with corn relish and coleslaw but did not. We only found out about the changes as we had food brought to us, which was pretty poor. Some of us complained and the maitre d either substituted quickly or took the items off the bill. The servers didn’t look after us very well, and were extremely slow in getting drinks orders in, and when they brought our drinks - didn’t know what was in the glasses. I think their staff are temps or new. My own meal was a very tasty pea and mint soup, the chef did a great job with that. The vegan risotto was loaded with vegan cheese - this wasn’t great, risotto served with cheese is a bit weird anyway and there was a lot of it. The risotto did taste good though, once it was scraped away. My dessert was the orange polenta cake and that was top class, very nicely baked. 4 of us went back the day after to try some other bits off the menu, and we would go back again. Probably not with a huge table though.

We had a week in Burnsall and visited this lovely pub on three evenings. The pub is full of interesting historical items and looks cosy for winter evenings. As we had a warm, sunny week we sat outside with beautiful views and enjoyed the company of others. The food was good, the staff friendly and I highly recommend a visit to the Craven Arms.

Beautiful traditional pub, full of character and interesting little trinkets about the place. Good friendly service too. Unfortunately have to rate at three stars due to food. We went on a Sunday about half an hour before closing. My pie and chips was delicious, my wife ordered the roast however and was served what was basically raw beef, completely raw, and fatty as well. It was mentioned to two separate waiters neither of whom saw fit to apologise or offer any type of discount. I can only assume the chef was miffed at having to prepare food near to the end of his shift because the meat was so very clearly not cooked! Any way my wife's loss was our dogs gain and he very much enjoyed the raw meat once we got home! I could have demanded a discount or refused to pay but that would have tainted what was a wonderful evening. We'll definitely be back. My only recommendation is to maybe arrive a good hour before the end of food service to be on the safe side!

Walked here from our hotel in Burnsall to have dinner and so glad we did! The building is stunning and the decor in the restaurant/hall rustic and very in keeping with the period property, with added (non-tacky) fairy lights. The food was excellent, the whitebait and tartare sauce obviously homemade and very tasty. I had a fish stew, which was homemade, full of seafood and vegetables, and tasted absolutely fantastic. A good selection of good beer and wine too (best pint of ale my partner has had some we got to Yorkshire!) Service was friendly and efficient. On the whole it is very well run and everyone knows what they are doing. All awards they have are well-deserved! The only let down was that the condiments were from Spar and the crusty bread was also not of the same high standard as everything else (frozen baguette). No photos of food because it was too good to wait for.

A pleasant meal in the very pretty restaurant area at the back of the pub. Loved the overall feel but it was a tad cramped and the low lighting made it difficult to see and read the menus. Food was nice, though a little overpriced for the portion sizes. The menu was adequate but a bit restricted in terms of vegetarian options. Drinks, especially Prosecco felt overpriced with prices on a par with Leeds City Centre! The service was excellent throughout. Overall we would visit again if staying locally but probably wouldn’t drive out specifically to visit.

I wanted a nice lunch for my husband for his birthday treat and remembered that we visited the Craven Arms in Appletreewick quite a few years ago when my Dad came up to Leeds and we’d loved it, so I booked a table for Sunday lunch. It was pretty busy when we arrived with it being a warm sunny day but managed to park in the car park and we’d reserved a table so no problem there. We both had the roast pork meal which arrived quickly … so did our drinks (I had the Appletreewick cider which was a nice change from my usual gin). The food was plentiful (took some home for Barney, my cat) and very tasty! Lovely homemade Yorkshire pudding with lots of meat and vegetables. Enjoyed every bite. We couldn’t manage a pudding (unfortunately) but my cafetière of coffee with hot milk went down a treat to finish off my meal. The entire bill came to around £45 which was very reasonable indeed for a such a lovely lunch … prices for all meals are very reasonable actually. We will definitely be back and of course the pub is set in amazing scenery, especially in the sunshine. A fab place for eating, or just a few pints … take in the scenery and enjoy. A gem of a place!

We were making the most of our dry summer Saturday (they have been very few and far between this year) and decided to have a drive out in the newly purchased 19 year old convertible. Decided The Craven Arms would be a good choice destination and we weren’t disappointed. We managed to get parked in the car park despite it being busy and popular. We bagged a table out front and enjoyed a couple of drinks, good banter with the team and a definite appreciation for good coffee. The Wharfedale Blond went down a treat so I had to have a second (I wasn’t the one driving 🥰). We had a lovely chat with Finn as we were leaving. He’s a lovely young man who has good customer interaction, keep hold of him and continue to develop his skills, he’s a great asset. We will be back to sample the menu next time

We had looked before heading to the Appletreewick area about where to eat and chose the Craven Arms over the Red Lion, BIG MISTAKE. We were shown to a cosy room as you entered on the left with 4 tables and the groups all in deep debate. This was not an issue and once a couple of tables left we just wanted to get on with enjoying our meal. Unfortunately the 3 men on the remaining table did not care what they were talking about or how loud they were. I was with my husband for an anniversary meal away. The group had been allowed to sit together and were clearly from different households BUT the conversation was disgusting. On top of constant swearing there was various sexual and derogatory discussions at the top of their voices. My husband was desperate to leave before we had even finished our food. I decided to speak up and ask the group if they could please mind their conversation and one of the group became quite challenging. They did pay up and leave and one apologised. My issue is that not one member of staff spoke to this group or supported us during our discussion with them. We had a feeble apology when the group had left and it was time to pay the bill.We had booked 2 weeks in advance and were really looking forward to the meal. There was not even an offer of a drink or anything. If I had gone to a rowdy pub and stood at the bar I would have expected to hear conversations like this but not sat eating my Saturday evening meal.Poor customer service and would not return.

We came here years ago and loved it, after looking at the covid one star reviews expected a militant welcome and interesting meal... Entered after a very short queue and were greated by a charming bald scotsman who helped us with drinks and got us seated with drinks whilst waiting for our table. They are very hot on the covid stuff here and we think the recent 1 star reviews are very unfair. Yes you can't just walk in and grab a beer, yes you can't just merge tables, but not everyone is comfortable with that. We felt safe and well looked after throughout,it was covid friendly without losing all atmosphere and service. Clearly everyone was a little busier and more stressed than they may have been a year ago but it's s the middle of a pandemic!!! Anyway, food was excellent, I'd highly recommend the pork belly; Mrs had the venison which was very good too.Service was great. The scotsman was a sarcastic git and we loved him for it - plus great to chat to him re whisky and great recommendations. Amazing evening, can't fault them here, especially under current circumstances. Will definitely return. Ps stay late until buster the dog (bear) comes out, we want him please.

Staying at Masons and visited twice for lunch and dinner. Found the policing of the numbers in the bar rather abrasive at times. That said, it must be difficult.Lunch was nice. Dinner was nice too, but must comment on the prices. £16/17 for pie and chips/ fish and chips is too much. They have a captive market and the prices reflect that. Fish and pie were lovely, but chips were ok, and mushy peas on the poor side. Sort the prices out and it would be a cracking pub.

After dealing with a tyre puncture outside the pub, we went inside and the very kind wait staff found us a table for five near the snug, as our fifth was outside dealing with the tyre. A local was standing at the snug after ordering a few pints, chatting to the bar staff. When he left and we attempted to order at the snug, we were told to move to the bar to order. We politely ordered five meals, and when the fifth meal (and husband turned up) the manager berated us, telling us we were at a table for four, and moving a chair to the table did not make it a table for five, even though they seated us at a table when we told them we were five people and we ordered five meals. One of our family moved to sit outside until a table freed up, and then returned inside to finish eating, whereupon we heard the manager making fun of our table of five. As we hurriedly finished our meal in silence just to leave the place, another couple sat down in the snug and proceeded to order pints from the snug bar, which we had not been allowed to do.This was our one family holiday this year. Covid is awful and hits everyone hard. The manager went out of his way to make us feel like unwelcome tourists, whereas I guess locals were treated like kings. It was an utter disappointment to the start of what we hope is a lovely holiday, and the behaviour was just unnecessary.

Have been going to this pub for years, and tried it again today for lunch after a morning walk, and would rate the food as mediocre at best. Two of us had sandwiches and a portion of home cooked chips. Mine was a warm pulled pork with black pudding in a brioche bun. It was cold, and not much filling!! The chips were quite uninviting, and could be described as scraps, because that is what we got. The ham sandwich looked the part, but the filling was poor.Beer was good, thank goodness, but come on, at least get your sandwiches up to scratch!!It is a charming country pub, but I don't need to pay good money for such mediocre food, and it is now off my list as a place to go. Great Shame, but have to let others know of our disappointment.

Decided to walk from Burnsall to this favourite pub and eatery and was lured away from the usual menu to the Sunday Roast, boasting locally reared beef, with fat roasted potatoes. The potatoes were the highlight of the dish! The beef, served nicely medium rare, was so tough you just had to ingest and hope that where teeth had failed, stomach would cope and the same could be said for the steamed kale combined with tough leeks, a combination indigestible if barely cooked, as these were. The entire plate was served at tepid, barely room temperature, combined to make this meal a complete disappointment for both diners and particularly for the friend who was treating me. I'm sorry Craven Arms, I still love you but feel you need to up your game with the Sunday Roast as there is a lot of competition offering better than this proved to be.

Visited mid week during a walk. Bar man/manager clearly doesn't enjoy his job and was in a mood. Asked for two glasses of Rioja he wasn't sure if he had any but found a bottle that was already open. Served us a very ordinary & cold supermarket quality wine £19. Assuming he had made a mistake I questioned two glasses of wine £19 . Yes correct for two large glasses £19. We will not be returning. Average Pub well over priced and a poor attitude and atmosphere.

Every visit to Yorkshire then it is a must to visit the Craven Arms. Visited on a very sunny Friday in September and were lucky to get a table in the bar. Fish and Chips were just amazing. Love the atmosphere, building et al. We will be back

The Cruck Barn was completely booked with a group from the nearby campsite. There is a very small restaurant room at the front which was also booked. We got a table in the bar by arriving early but be warned it gets busy so book ahead. Food was good. Definitely recommended.

To our shame we only live over the hill in Pateley Bridge and had never visited the Craven Arms before Saturday evening. We arrived at 7 to find it very busy and no tables available but whilst we enjoyed our drinks and pondered our next move a couple very kindly offered to share their table with us.

We've been visiting this place for a number of years now either from the local campsite or more recently as guests staying in one of the Shepherd's huts. I feel the need to praise and thank every single member of the team for their hard work and dedication. We love the huts at the back of the pub, so much so, we've just booked for the new year! Cosy, clean comfortable and so quiet! The food is consistently delicious, (the best fish and chips we've had for a long time!) The Old Peculier, what can I say! Absolutely first class! Thanks for a fantastic weekend, cant get enough of this place, see you in the new year.

This is a gem tucked away in a very rural location. We enjoyed an early evening dinner beside the fireplace. Food was exceptional, it is very dog friendly and the service was super efficient. A lovely relaxed atmosphere in this ancient building. Highly recommended by be sure to book.

After a good walk in nearby Grassington we decided to have late lunch/early dinner at the Craven Arms.We knew the place but had not eaten there for a time.Despite there being a very busy pub and only 10 minutes to food stop time we were found a table and asked to order asap - no problem. Plenty of staff on the bar / food service and most helpful.Thoroughly enjoyed our drinks and food.Pity that a member of staff behind the bar chose to rather loudly comment about me not paying attention to the lovely young dog which craved my approval. I didn't comment to you at the time as I am not so rude as you - I was rather more concentrating on watching my wife coming down the steps from the toilets as she has Parkinsons and I also did not want to encourage the dog because if it got around her feet it can be a problem with someone with her reduced mobility and balance. I would otherwise have been only too ready to pay attention to such a delightful dog. A bit of thought maybe?

Just got back from a visit to this place for my sisters 60th, first impressions were good. Before we started our meal we felt very uncomfortable by one of the staff constantly watching over us (or that's how it felt) When the meals arrived it became apparent that the people that ordered the roast beef had a very tough time cutting through it. My 80 year old mother was the first the complain, her food was taken away to the chef and returned to her, the chef said there's nothing wrong with it and was given a steak knife??? My partners beef was also full of gristle and hard to cut, as was everyone else's. I myself had the steak & ale pie, which wasn't that great either but nothing too much to moan about until i came to the end. I was left with what looked like two pieces of string or similar sticking up out of the pastry. When the plates were cleared away we brought this to the waiters attention. After 5 minutes or so passed it was brought back to me in a napkin and was told it was thyme, this was left next to me until i asked the member of staff to take it away. There was no apology made for the issues raised which made us all feel that we were the ones in the wrong. As i said at the start, lovely place but sadly we won't be returning in the near future.

We ate here twice whilst camping at Mason's Campsite just down the road. The weather was awful - warm but very wet which meant the pub was very busy. Although most of the tables were already reserved for diners, we arrived just at the right time and were given a table which had become available due to a late cancellation. There were plenty of staff working on both evenings, all pleasant and friendly. Special mention for Chris who the 'front of house'. All our meals were super tasty, well cooked and very plentiful, indeed the best pub food we have eaten in a long time. The pub hasn't changed at all since our last visit which was possibly 20 years ago - still cosy and welcoming. We will be back. PS - the steak and ale pie was amazing!

Lovely building, good ales. The Barn dining room is a sensational conversion - beautiful. The food is restaurant prices but not all dishes are restaurant quality. I can't speak for the meat eaters, but the vegetarian mains were disappointing, eg. a massive plate of so-so risotto with no frills for £13.95. More of the same doesn't make it worth the money. Starters were much better - the watermelon starter was exceptional (£6.95.

Stopped for lunch after visiting Bolton Abbey. Food was just what we wanted - not flash but good wholesome nosh! I had steak and ale pie and chips with mushy peas - very nice and would have again. Wife had the (huge) burger and chips. Nothing left on either plate so that says it all.

We visited last November and I wrote a review at the time as food and ambience was spot on ..this time not so...staff behind the bar were quite short and impatient with us as we tried to make our minds up on what to eat .we were sat outside with a dog so two of us came in to choose from the board then we had to swap so the other two could choose and it was busy but thats no excuse for the very rude and impatient young man behind the bar .

The Craven Arms proved an excellent pub to walk to from our campsite. Many of our group had food here, and the pub had a good selection of beer. One bar has a world war 2 theme, and it was fine to go in for a drink in spite of being very wet, and with a very wet dog.

The staff coordinating the wedding could not have been more helpful. The barn itself is beautiful and the staff worked hard behind the scenes but were not intrusive. Richard, the manager was welcoming and even found a table for 6 of us for sunday lunch when we hadn't booked.

Seven of us ( including 2 friends over from Ausralia) were staying nearby, and after spending 2 evenings having drinks at the Craven Arms, we booked to have dinner in the pub on our 3rd night. We visited the Craven Arms on a Sunday reasonably early, so we managed to get a table tucked away near the bar in the side room. The place quickly filled up with other guests and there was a bustling trade of drinkers and diners outside as well as in.

Appletreewick is a lovely village and the Craven Arms is atmospheric. We stayed in the shepherds hut and pre booked 2 evening meals for 7pm.When we arrived in the afternoon to collect our key we were told a small round table had been reserved for us in the dining room.We arrived on time for our evening meal only to find another couple eating at our reserved table. We were then shown to another table in what I can only describe as a back corridor next to the gents toilet and the constantly opening and closing door to the kitchen.A couple of steps up from where we were sitting was the cruck barn where a birthday party was in progress with loud music from a band and the party goers constantly passing us en route to the bar.One waitress said how lucky we were to be sitting there & able to listen to the band ! Our thoughts NO definitely not we could hardly hear ourselves speak. The second evening a lovely waiter made sure we were in the dining room. I have to say as a food critic it was somewhat dissapointing lacking in flavour & presentation.

Stayed at The Lister Arms for a couple of nights mid week. We stayed in the Lister Barn which is a 2 minute walk from the actual pub. Cosy and warm, tastefully decorated with lovely toiletries - a real gem of a place. The main pub is really cosy, with a gorgeous fire burning all day and evening. Breakfast and dinner here were both really good with large portions. Lots of dogs inside the bar area too which was lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely return.

Fantastic place. Roll with bacon and sausage was lovely. Really good quality ingredients and perfectly cooked. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. I've been coming here on caving trips for 25 years and always either start or finish the day in Inglesport. Love it. The only thing I'd say... bring back the pints of tea!!! And please don't ever stop doing the tiffin, it is the best on the planet.

On arrival the pub does not inspire confidence in the quality of food - but it was really very good. I was dubious about the sizes of sunday roasts after reading a previous review - and to be fair, the plates do not arrive loaded with masses of veg or mash. However, we all left feeling satisfied and it really felt like well prepared, high quality food. The steak and ale pie, and steak and ale yorkie had the same filling, which was superb.
