1-min review Pros: - Great-tasting, authentic dishes, including the Laksa, the Hainanese Chicken rice and the Char Kway Teow - very reasonably priced - varied menu, something for everyone - lots of seating, as well as fast service - good drink selection Cons: - seating is a bit on the tight side Overall: One of the best places in central London for Malaysian/Singapore food, reasonably priced and full of flavour

I'm of Malaysian descent and grew up eating Malaysian food cooked by my Nan and Aunts. This place is no longer a good place for Malaysian food; it's gone downhill. I ordered Nasi Goreng and Phad Thai, neither of which resembled the authentic dish. The Nasi Goreng was a mish-mash of rice and vegetables with three small prawns. The Phad Thai was a plate of sloppy noodles and zero flavour. They had the nerve to add a £3.30 service charge for the server to bring two sub-standard dishes. I won't be returning, and I advise others to look elsewhere.

Down a dirty alleyway this place is easily missed… small cafe but busy… serving Malaysian cuisine… dishes ordered Honioh mee with steamed chicken…noodles cooked in dark soya sauce served with corn fed chicken… the chicken was juicy and flavoursome, very fresh…. The noodles were perfectly cooked with the right amount of soya sauce… nasi goreng mamak which is a lamb rice with curry leaves, kit too dissimilar to a biriyani… this was very good, not overpowering with the curry taste, enough to give you a kick.. try the limau ice, very refreshing on the palate…

Went for lunch and had prawn mee and ice kachang. Prawn Mee was full of MSG as I was very thirsty after eating this dish. Also hardly any ingredients except for noodles and 4 little prawns @ £13.50 Ice Kachang came in a plastic bowl with plastic spoon @ £5.50 and was very sweet. This cafe has started charging 12.5% service charge. Whilst I have no issue paying service charge if the service warrants the payment. The issue I have is the sneaky way the cafe round the service charge to the nearest penny and it's a case of paying a few extra pence instead of the correct amount. So my actual service charge should be £2.37 and was charged £2.40. This is the 2nd time I noticed this practice by this establishment. Imagine doing this to every customer and it soon adds up for the establishment's profit. My grievance is customers should be charged accordingly and correctly and no given right by the establishment to engage in this sort of practice. Most Chinese restaurant don't take kindly when people refuse to pay the service charge for poor or bad service, which in the first place is discretionary. The waiting staff can be nasty and abusive when this happens. Bad trading practice!

Just off Rupert street in a side Alley. It has a no booking policy- Not the best selling point, as it was already almost full at 1215 at ground level Interior is minimalist clean and bright with with tiles if the skyline of Kuala Lumpur and London. A large selection of Malaysian food of offer- More of the Chinese Malaysian. Opted for the Wat Tan Ho. It had large flat noodle with seafood in a starchy sauce made of egg. It was average- had to get some chilli oil to make it more flavoursome. Teh Tarik was ok-at £4 it is overpriced! It comes hot or cold. It’s also average - too sweet and tea component could be stronger! Service was ok.

The Satay was fried!!! Iv never had fried satay in my life, the char quay teow was so oily and tasteless. There are much better Malaysian restaurants close by. Also the restaurant and bathroom was very dirty I noticed.

If you’re looking for fantastic Malaysian food— whether you’ve tried it or not—- come here. Tourists, this place is worth waiting in line for. All eight of us were incredibly happy with our meals. Fantastic flavor, large portions; it’s worth the extra 35 pence to get takeaway. Our server was excellent. He went above and beyond giving honest suggestions; you can tell he wants his customers to have the most incredible food experience. When the food came out, he helped mix my friend’s soup that has a half-boiled egg in this particular way so it would taste just right. It was such a surreal and cool experience. For the chai tea latte lovers out there: avoid the watered down stuff at Pret A Manger. Come here instead! They have the equivalent of a chai tea latte here that is fantastic. I wish I could remember the name of it; it’s not listed online but I would inquire about it. It’s worth trying. Definitely coming back again next time I’m in the area.

The food does not taste 100% authentic Malaysian but some dishes are reasonably close to what you will find in Kuala Lumpur at a very accessible central location. The service is fast and some of the dishes I would recommend are Wat Tan Hor (a mixed seafood hor fun with silky egg gravy), king prawn Char Kuey Teow, and the beef rendang. Both seafood noodles, when prepared properly, should have a distinct taste of charred smokiness, and dark brown in colour. The Char Kuey Teow served here does occasionally tastes smokier on some days compared to others. You can also request for the dish to be prepared extra spicy. I have not yet found a restaurant in the UK that serves one which is comparable to the extremely smoky and flavourful duck egg Char Kuey Teows you will find in Penang (traditionally topped with blood cockles and fried crispy pork lardons) but this is probably the most decent you will find here. It is a dish that is unusually difficult to get right and can vary greatly in the consistency, texture, and taste even across the many states of Malaysia. The Wat Tan Hor noodle is covered in a delicious thick, rich, and smooth egg gravy sauce and is simply irresistible. I do prefer the noodles cooked over a charcoal fire which accentuates the smoky flavour but I suspect there are certain limitations here with the use of charcoal. It is typically served with pickled green chillies or sambal chilli paste but I prefer mine with freshly cut chillies in a light soy sauce. It is a comforting and warming dish, especially for those cold winter months. Across the years, I have tried a variety of dishes from this restaurant but most of them can be a hit or miss and these are the only three dishes I would normally go back for, recommend to a friend, or takeaway for the evening.

We’ve been to C&R quite a few times and we keep going back for more - it is hidden away in Chinatown but worthwhile finding it! The food is amazing - always something different to try from their massive menu, and always seems good quality and tastes great! Food always arrives fast, but be prepared to wait for a table as it gets busy! Service can be a little hit or miss - sometimes really friendly, sometimes a bit on the rude side - but really worth looking past that! One thing to note is that they have a slightly irritating rule (though I can almost understand why, as it is in an in-demand place) that your whole party has to be there before they’ll seat you, and they’re strict about it (will make you wait outside until everyone is there!). So don’t even bother trying to take your table while you wait for the others to join.

Popped in 3 days ago for a quick pre theatre lunch. I ordered the Singapore Laksa which came with hardly any prawns or fishballs but mostly fried tofu pieces. It was edible but nothing special. My food was left on the counter with a male & female staff talking over my food ( thank goodness it's briefly otherwise I would have had it sent back to the kitchen...but then goodness knows what they do in the kitchen when one complains!!!) until another sensible staff took it over to my table ( I was seated by the front entrance next to the counter) C&R; used to serve decent food & was my regular place for Malaysian hawker like food, but in recent years, it's gone downhill! They kept increasing their prices, reducing the food portions and poor quality food. Service is non existent as the staff are all robot like and table sharing with total strangers is required in this cafe which I have no issue with if food is good! Unfortunately it's not! Time to look around for another place for my Malaysian fix!

We dined here for lunch last Saturday 24th August. I wish I had read the “terrible” Trip Advisor reviews of this place dating back to 2016 as there are a few reviews from people stating they got food poisoning and diarrhoea. Had I taken the time to do this, we would never have suffered the same as we would not have dined here.

Stick to the real Malay dishes here and don't bother with the usual dishes that you know. Because the real Malay dishes here (Rendang Curry, Char Kway Teo ..... and the Sambal Prawns or Sotong - squid) are Super Fab.

C&R; café offers a good selection of dishes, fairly priced. The place is quite small, and was a bit crowded when we got there, but service was quick and friendly. The food arrived promptly. Nothing super fancy, but good. :)

Nice and cosy little restaurant tucked down a side street. Service is fast and the food is authentic Malaysian especially the Curry laksa noodles and nasi lemak. Well recommended for those fancy meals with Malaysian favours

This place is in an alley (harder to find, hence less people, so better chance to get a seat). Chinatown is teeming with tourists, with long queues to get into restaurants, so C&R; is convenient. Very decent Chinese/Malaysian good. I go for the Singapore and Asam Lakhsa when I eat here. Staff is great (Hi Doris).

This place has a great Singaporean Laksa! The service was friendly and speedy. The Laksa was a little too spicy for me, but I’m a bit of an amateur. So, word of warning for any other spice/heat amateurs!

I think this place might have closed now. I tried 4/5 to order over the phone then I went down in person but the place was closed. Feel sad that they've closed. Used to enjoy their food

No volveré

I strongly advise to avoid this place...the staff are incompetent. No card payment facility. The ATM didn’t dispense correct cash. The drinks are awful and the food is terrible at best ! Carlton Lounge is much better for Shesha and food and is in a much better setting, this place is more of a make-shift smokers den at the back of your garden...

Samuel couldn’t have been more helpful if he tried. A wonderful service from start to finish and he most certainly made my day!
