Do Not waste your money The place is a shambles, arrived Sunday afternoon no staff anywhere, eventually a lady came no hello or how are you just a you checking in! Asked if there was a menu for 3 people to dine, Nope not serving food she said, I can most probably do something but if rather not. Bedrooms and corridors smell old and musty , breakfast is something to be seen for yourselves. Someone sits by the bar whilst you help yourself to a cold unwelcoming breakfast set up. The croissants were the same for both days, everything is individually wrapped so obviously all bought in, bread is not fresh, meats and continental cheese slices are what you buy from a supermarket. Awful

We decided to stop for Sunday lunch at the County, the sign indicated carvery for £14.95 a head. It was just after 12 (sign said lunch served from 12) so we went in. The lady waiting on (Marj ?) greeted us and said it would be about half an hour for food if we didn’t mind waiting. We were in no rush so took a seat. On first impressions the dining area looks lovely. Closer inspection (while you wait!) the upholstery on the chairs needs a thorough clean, the paint on the walls needs updating and the floor boards securing (every time someone passed our table it moved!) It seems locals go here often and the atmosphere was relaxed. There was a birthday party in the nearby function room and this must have put a pressure on the kitchen. Veg started to be put on the hot plate after about a 50 minute wait and eventually, an hour and 10 Minutes after being seated the food started to come through. A choice of three meats (turkey/beef or gammon). The meats were very well cooked and were tender and moist, however the smallest portions seen. Plenty of veg to choose from and these were kept topped up. Yorkshire puddings were massive (and nice!) most diners left after the main course, we had a dessert (jam sponge) bought in, definitely not home made. The wait staff were efficient and friendly, let down only by the kitchen and the pressure of a party happening at the same time as lunch. We don’t think there was £15 worth of a carvery, which was a shame as it tasted nice.

Stayed here for B&B one night on our way to Scotland as a convenient distance from motorway. We were given a larger family room was clean and bed comfy, we had a good quiet nights sleep. As we were delayed due to an accident on the way, I was able to notify them and receive a reply which was reassuring. We wanted to leave early morning so Tina agreed to make a tray up for breakfast to take to our room for us to have at our leisure.. There was plenty to eat, bananas, grapes, apples and peaches, cereal, bread, jam, honey, ready wrapped pastry & chocolate crepe. We arranged for a bucket of ice to keep the dairy cool which worked well. We were too late to eat in the restaurant. Carnforth is a pretty town.

The worst restaurant I’ve been to in a while! Looks lovely from the outside but service is shocking. Me and 17 others had booked a birthday meal expecting to each have a cavery. To start off, we waited around 10 mins to receive a menu. Drinks arrived over the course of about 15 minutes. (There was one other family in the restaurant) when drinks finally arrived, the young man that brought them looked absolutely gormless and miserable. The restaurant could only serve about 6 of us a cavery before running out of food. The 6 that managed to get a cavery said the meat was flavourless and dry. Food was Luke warm. The range of veg and other cavery bits is very limited. The manager cried and said she’s “not a people’s person” and said she’s actually a nail tech??? She then rang her sister because she was “having a bad day” and stated it was not her fault and passed the blame onto anyone but herself. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone at all

Ate here early evening. We both ordered the tikka masala. When the meal arrived almost quarters of tomatoes dominated the meal. The masala was also very watery. It felt as though there was only one masala available, but the chef had added the tomatoes to spin the meal into two portions. The meal was advertised as coming with mango chutney, but we had to ask the waitress for some. Overall not a good meal.

My husband and I booked this break with a voucher we received at Christmas and it was a belated anniversary celebration due toLockdown rules and restrictions.I emailed the hotel in advance and asked if we could possibly have a nice top floor room and this was exactly what we got. All the accommodation is behind the hotel in a separate building and we liked this because you could come and go as you pleased without having to go through the hotel. We were very pleased with the spacious top floor room we were allocated. It was spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed and lots of wardrobe and drawer space as well as 2 comfortable chairs. A full sized kettle and also a good hairdryer were provided and ample tea and coffee sachets. The only slight problem we had was a noisy fan in the bathroom which did not switch off with the light. We realised by our second night that the door also had to be completely closed to switch off the fan so we got a better nights sleep the next day. The restaurant in The County is lovely and we dined there on Saturday night, my scampi was delicious and my husband enjoyed his gammon. Table service and social distancing was very good. We also had a nice breakfast on Sunday morning in The County Coffee Shop which was very tasty and good value. All the staff at The County are very friendly and helpful and the hotel is in a very good area, ideal for visiting the Lakes or nearby Morecambe where we enjoyed visiting. We did have a problem with the noise of traffic when we had the windows open but it did go quiet at night when the windows were closed and we slept well once we had sorted the fan out.

Popped in here on spec as we had missed our bus and had 1 hour to spare. First visit in about 10 years, however we were pleasantly surprised. To be fair if was quiet, we were the only people in, so no real atmosphere, but we just really wanted a drink, which we got and must admit, we did enjoy it. Staff friendly and cheerful, with Covid measures in place. It was better than we expected so we would definitely return 👍

Four of us went for lunch and thge decor is clean and modern and staff pleasant, tables well spaced out. The rest was just underwelming, we were given the menu's but left to guess the soup of the day and todays choice of pie, why oh why do places do that and when we asked about the soup they had to go and find out. We had two prawn cocktails and a camembert for two, the prawn were quite small and poor value and just lettuce and prawn, the camembert i am told could have done with chutney/sauce or something to give it some flavour. Mains, one Chicken Kiev which strangely had been cut in half and butterflyed on the plate which was strange, the fish was adequate if not a little soggy and i believe the vegetarian curry was nice. All in all average, would i go back, no there are better places around.

Two of us stayed on Thursday night and we were very disappointed with what we found. The furnishings were pleasant and the room was very roomy and well laid out. Beyond that there is little to recommend it. When we arrived at 2.00pm we found that there was no draught real ale, no plain crisps and no nuts. When we arrived back from a meeting at 9.45 the bar was lit up but they had finished serving. At all times it was difficult to find service. In the morning we left our annex to have breakfast in the main hotel to find it totally locked up with no sign of breakfast at any time. This was at 08.30.

Very helpful and friendly staff who were clearly coronavirus aware and keeping everything bacterially safe. There is a fairly extensive menu in the bistro. Some items are marked at half price at certain times. This included the fish pie - excellent quality and value. We also ordered fish and chips which came with really good chunky chips. However, I must give a mention to the mushy peas. These tasted like the real item- as if they had been steeped and then simmered. It is SOO unusual to be treated to these nowadays - and what's more they were not served in a tiny white bowl on the side. Somebody in the kitchen is doing things right here!

We had to spend an hour in town before the Railway Heritage centre opened, and this was one of the places open where you can sit down in warm. I think that's the last good thing we can say about this place. The service was slow, and the English Breakfast we ordered take long time to get and was rather cold and not really fresh. They charged £1,50 for a babychino which was not even a babychino just a little warm milk and £1,95 for two additional toasts to the breakfast. Avoid them for ever.

Husband had soup with a lovely crusty mini loaf bread. Waited a while till main came but it was tasty. Chips were lovely and scampi was nice but a bit over cooked. All covered in salt which I don’t normally add. Only fly in the ointment was the mayonnaise. The dish came and it looked not only as if it had been lifted half used from another table, but that it had been sitting a while too. I asked for another one and the same dish came out it’s fresh mayo on top.....not impressed. As we ordered 50%off items, the price was excellent. Surroundings are a bit tired and the bar was really sticky. Staff were pleasant. If not for mayo, it would be a 4.

We were looking for somewhere to grab some breakfast before our drive home, and so glad we stopped here. The full English was fantastic, clearly great quality produce, cooked to perfection. My little boy had a great looking sausage sandwich, teas and coffees were top notch. Service was good, albeit a little ‘vanilla’, but no qualms. Deffo recommend. Full English was £7.50, great value. With teas and coffee, orange juice and sandwich, £24.

Decided spontaneously at 7:30pm on a Saturday evening to go out for dinner with our teenage son and his school friend. As expected most places were fully booked Phoned around 7:55pm to Check availability at the County and were told that they normally stop taking orders at 8:30pm but if we were there 5mins over that it would be fine. We set off from Sedbergh and drove briskly arriving at 8:36 (tracker in car confirms). Despite them having taken my wife’s name over phone we were disappointed to be told kitchen was all closed and no alternative options suggested other than “Sorry”. With hindsight I regret not going to one of our fantastic local eating places but the others had wanted a change of venue. Luckily we discovered Mia Italia 10mins along the road from the County where we had a lovely evening out. Being in business ourselves wasting ones precious time particularly at a time when other options are closing is disappointing. We should never have been led on to make the 30minute journey.

We came here tonight on recommendation and we enjoyed our meal & the experience, although I felt it was too busy for just two waiting on staff. Both girls were very polite, but seemed a bit under pressure for the busy half price midweek offer. However it did not stop their service being very good, asking if our meals were satisfactory, which they certainly were. The midweek half price offer is great, good choice with still full menu & specials available. We had starters, mains & 2 rounds of drinks and was very reasonable. Perhaps we should have taken the table in the restaurant when we were offered it but as we had settled in the Sports lounge we stayed there, when we arrived we were told it was fine to sit there and that food is served in there. A table that arrived 5-10 minutes after us had their order taken and was served way before us, but as the restaurant was busy we didn’t let it bother us too much (despite being the only other table in the sports lounge eating) but when the food arrived it was very good and my partner and I were happy. The issue was the wait for anyone to come over, no one came whilst we ate to check we were happy or wanted any drinks (no biggie perhaps) and we were left 15 -20 minutes after eating with plates in front of us and still no one. After a little longer my partner went up and asked for another drink and dessert menu, they said they’d bring them over. A few moments later the menu arrived with her drink, and there we sat for 25-30 more minutes, no one came in to check or take our dessert order despite having 2 dessert menus sitting in front of us. I have to say we didn’t wait overly long for our mains but everything else took an age and to be honest I could have left and they wouldn’t have even noticed. Very very slow and inattentive, when we were served they were very polite but that’s beside the point, it didn’t have often enough. I’d hate to come on a Saturday, you’d need a spare 3 hours, and god help you if you want 3 courses.

We were looking for a bar snack & upon arrival at The county we looked at the menu in the display unit and saw they offered some lovely bar food, we entered and wow it looked amazing I'd expected the usual pub look! I went in to be greeted with a warm welcome and the bar and seating area was beautiful, spotless & the modern music was a bonus. My 7 year old ordered sausage & mash My 11 year old ordered kids chicken strips & chips (usually she would eat an adult portion!) & I ordered fish & chips. With not too long to wait the food arrived, tasty, home made, very filling & very cheap for the standard of food that was being served an almost too good to be true moment. Drinks were reasonable in price too. My daughter didn't need an adults portion. The staff were very smart & took pride in their appearance as well as grafting hard. All in all I'd recommend to anyone. A fabulous little gem that possibly gets overlooked as just a hotel! Well done guys 10/10

It was our anniversary, and we were staying about four miles up the canal at Capernwray. We walked into Carnforth to our 'usual haunt' for a special lunch only to find they were not serving food as the chef had walked out. We were somewhat disappointed, but it transpired it was the best result ever! We came across the County, and found it to be dog friendly in a very nice room away from the main restaurant. The menu catered for all tastes; I opted for the roast duck served on bubble and squeak, and my Wife who is a veggie opted for the Buffalo cauliflower, served on a tortilla, with re-fried black beans and salad. The food was obviously cooked from fresh, as there was a delay in it arriving; it was well worth the wait! The duck was cooked to perfection, and the bubble and squeak with lovely crispy green beans were fantastic accompaniments, truly delicious. My Wife was amazed at the presentation of her meal, and the quality too; it looked like a piece of art. The service was sublime, and for the quality it wasn't expensive. We have found our new eatery!

We have passed this place many times and always thought it looked nice. It is a very welcoming place, inside and out, and the waitress was super friendly. However, I was bitterly disappointed with the food. I decided to go for the healthiest thing on the children's menu for my daughter, which looked to be pasta in a tomato sauce. Even before it arrived, I could smell vinegar, and when it was laid in front of my daughter, it had a sheen to it that looked very unnatural. I could tell immediately from the smell and the look that it was literally just pasta swimming in ketchup, and it tasted absolutely vile (as one would expect). I told the waitress that we were not too happy to have been served pasta in ketchup, and she took our comment back to the chef, who sent her back to tell us it was 'pasta in tomato sauce, as stated on the menu'.

Your first challenge is to work out where to ask someone for a table. Ignore the bar on the left as you enter and go to the right. It was busy when we went early evening but were lucky to get a table. It was a lot quieter later on so I suspect most may have gone for the early evening deal. The food was excellent. No complaints there. The service was a bit on the slow side. The pint I had ordered to start with was almost gone by the time the food turned up. (About 40mins from ordering to getting the food). We have only been the once so I don't know if this was just a one off or how it normally is. The staff were friendly and polite. I won't hesitate going back again.

We found ourselves in Carnforth and needed something to eat. Living locally we'd heard lots of opinions on the refurbishment but thought it worth a look ourselves. On a lovely sunny evening it was busy and had a large birthday party in too. Initial service was a little slow but once underway things went smoothly and the food delicious, particularly noteworthy was the crab lasagne starter. The staff looked a little harrrassed but were pleasant throughout and although we were later than the 6.45 cutoff for the 50% food discount because of their delay we were given the reduced rate automatically. All in all an enjoyable experience.

No problem getting a last minute booking here for two at 7pm on a June Saturday. Not the most extensive menu, but good, well-cooked food and friendly service. We both had the Lamb Henry main course, which was yummy and a good portion size. Obviously take their standards seriously, as I was given my ice cream dessert free when I had to chase it up after a long wait.

This place used to serve lovely carveries, but has recently been refurbished and serves a really good variety of meals. Thought it a little pricey for lunch at first, but the food was absolutely beautiful with various twists to it, as in not 'traditional' sandwiches, we were all exceptionally pleased with what we ordered and have recommended to family to visit

We hadn't thought to come to The County before the refurb as it was tired and uninteresting. Since the refit the decor is smart and appealing; a nice alternative to the old-style pubs in Carnforth. The dining room is nicely designed and airy - when we arrived we were seated at a table in the window while all the tables seemed to be well positioned with a lot of space between. The food really is great: a 'Steak Frites' cooked to order with a herb butter and a pork schnitzel full of flavour - both at extremely reasonable prices. The staff seem very new, as you'd expect from a recent takeover, and a little inexperienced but all very friendly. The County is run by a new pubco and unfortunately they don't seem to have much patience. The menu is already due to change and having seen it it's extremely tired and old-fashioned, pretty much to polar opposite of what they seemed to be initially aiming for, and more expensive. Having seen the same thing happen at their other pub in town Taps on the Green it would probably be best to enjoy what's good about the venue while you can as the execs might not have much of a long term plan. If you're quick though it's a great place for dinner.

I visited the County Hotel for Mother's Day lunch with my granny, dad and sister as we had heard great things about the places recent refurbishment. We used to have a lot of family get togethers at the County as children so I was excited to see how the place had been renovated. The bar and lounge area looked fab and this is where my dad had booked for us to be seated however there had been some confusion and we ended up in the middle of the 'restaurant' where the carvery is. Not what we had planned! It was echoey and the seats not as comfortable and we did feel slightly cheated. The staff were quick to resolve the issue and were apologetic however they didn't really acknowledge that this was a special occasion for us which had been tainted although the lovely bags of daffodils and flapjack were a lovely gesture. The food was brilliant. I opted for the carvery which was top notch with loads of choice although some of the vegetables were a little watery and clearly hadn't been fully drained. The customer service with the carvery was also disappointing with no staff members helping my granny to serve herself meaning that my dad had to leave his meal on the table getting cold so that he could help her. The prices were very reasonable and I think had we been sitting in the lounge as booked I would have been able to leave at least a 4* rating!

Been to the newly refurbished County for midweek lunch with friends a couple of times now. Its a great new environment and a positive improvement for Carnforth. The Christmas lunch was a 4 - 4.5 / 5, but lunch a couple of weeks ago was no more than an OK 3. Main problem was it appeared to be seriously understaffed. Long delays and poor service. Whilst we were eating I saw one chap stand at the bar for 15 minutes, no staff, gave up and left. Menu is fairly standard pub food. We paid £312 for 6 people which covered two bottles of wine, mains and desserts. Will probably return, but would welcome a rather more creative menu - and some waiters / waitresses!

Parking is in the restaurant's own car park, and wheelchair access is via double doors and a flat interior. It looks like it has recently been refurbished as the decoration and furniture looked new and stylish. The food is plentiful, and of an exceptionally high quality. Service is with a smile. Not the cheapest place we have eaten in, but the quality makes paying a bit extra worthwhile. Can recommend the sharing platter for starters. You get more than enough for two people, and it's nice to try something a bit different. My steak was cooked to perfection. Fantastic! Highly recommended.

To start must admit the County was not our first choice for this lunch but as we had been let down by our first choice and it was a very wet day at 2 30 in the afternoon we were running out of ideas to where to eat without going too much out of our way home. Luckily the County did serve food till 5pm. The restaurant is very nice and newly refurbished at the time we entered there were not many people in. Staff were just on a change over but the lady was very nice and brought us drinks while we looked at menu. Good choice from sandwiches to what I call evening food and prices to match! THere were two items which you could have smaller portions of which were cheaper. We chose a item of the nibbles menu which was assorted artisan breads while waiting for our mains quite reasonable £2.50 By this time there was only a young man and two elderly ladies left in restaurant all of whom were already eating but it took 20 mins to get our 'nibbles' It was then at least 25 mins to us getting our meals of gammon, egg and chips for my husband at £11.95 and a smoked bbq pulled pork on a bun which was sitting on a large amount of raw peppers, carrots, cuc, onions and lots of French fries (these were very good and hot) plus a small dish containing apple sauce. DId not find the raw veg appealing but the pulled pork was plentiful and tasty at a cost of £10.95. My husband enjoyed his meal as he got what he calls proper chips. Overall the place was smart and food was not bad if a little expensive for a lunch. Service was bit on the slow side considering the amount of customers but as my husband always says when food is served over this length of time and there are a lack of customers things slow down!

The county has recently been taken over by a multi company and refurbished. Have brought the new year in here on a number of occasions but stopped coming a few years ago due to the building and service being run Down. Since the take over we decided to give it another chance. Great evening, great food atmosphere very friendly and very well organised. We certainly will be giving it another go next year. We have also started to use it again regularly for a drink and to watch the football. Here the Sunday carvery is very good but have yet to give that a try.

Stopped off here on way home from Scotland on Monday 2nd January. I was travelling with my 76 year old Mother. We sat in the Bar to watch the Football and asked the waitress to see the menu. She was polite and brought us the menu and said just order at the bar in Restaurant. This was around 4.45pm and on the Menu it stated that you could order food up to 6.30pm. So at 5.00pm i went into the Restaurant bar nobody was behind the bar but a different waitress was serving tables of which around only 6 tables were occupied. After waiting 10 minutes at the bar the waitress came to serve me i asked if i could order some food. She said excuse me! i repeated i would like to order some food please. She said kitchens closed. So without any explanation as to the kitchen being closed i walked back into the bar and told my mother. one minute later the waitress stormed into the bar to our table and said ARE YOU A RESIDENT? to which i replied NO! My mum commented how aggresive she was and wanted to make a complaint. Half an hour later a different waitress came to our table and said HAVE YOU BEEN TRYING TO ORDER FOOD? to which i replied YES! She said WE HAD A MIX UP IN THE KITCHEN AND THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SORTED OUT,THE KITCHENS BACK OPEN. It goes without saying that we decided not to eat here after the Rude behaviour of the one waitress. Very unprofessional Waitress and especially in front of my elderly mother.

Called in tonight to check on the new refurbishment and to have a meal and it was ,as other reviews point out, great. Excellent welcome, very pleasant decor, and very good menu. Very good food, served by pleasant staff, good wine list and all in all an excellent night out. Very busy so would suggest booking although a few turned up and they only had to wait a short while to be seated. A great venue for Carnforth and would have no hesitation in recommending it, thanks for a lovely evening.

Being a local its great to see the County up and coming. I went to the offical reopening evening where we were served some lovely tapas/hors d'oeuvres. The atmosphere was great and decor very tasteful. We could not fault the staff: Jordon, in particular, was very accommodating and proud to talk about the County with us. He mentioned that a handful of the staff were on their first shift that night but I could honestly not tell. Good work. I do wish it well - Carnforth deserves such a great place. We will be back to dine so expect another review ;-)

After barely a week of being open, and the expected teething problems, we were thoroughly impressed and will be back to try the rest of the menu! Love that the food is homemade (especially the BBQ sauce- which has its own unique taste) unlike other restaurants who use packets. The service was great- especially the lovely Caitlin who did amazing on her first shift there! Well done! The manager was also lovely and listened to our feedback. Looking forward to getting our loyalty card stamped on the next visit! Exactly what Carnforth needed!

What a turn around. The "New" county is fantastic, just what was needed in the area. The sauce on the ribs should be bottled and sold, it was that good ! Stopped here on the way home as I was aware they had a daily carvery at a reasonable price. They were very quiet and therefore not a great atmosphere but the food was good and there was no wait. If you are looking for a pint and a place to rest and watch the football, the country hotel pub in the town centre wouldn't be a bad choice to make. The atmosphere is pleasant, the service is quick and the two televisions give you plenty of options to watch the live football.

My wife and I stayed here with friends and I found it to be over priced, providing poor quality rooms and atrocious food. Our double room was tired the bathroom dirty and the facilities poor. The main issue I have with the 'County' is the food and service. Our evening meal did not resemble our menu choices in any way. Fish was over cooked every thing else was mediocre and very plain. Service was slow. At one point I the evening there was no staff available in the building at all. We will NOT be staying at this hotel again.
