Couch's Great House in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Another outstanding meal at Couch's. Not sure if we can count ourselves as regulars but we have made yearly visits for about ten years now and always leave wishing we could get back sooner than our next intended annual visit to Cornwall. Always a much anticipated and integral part of our plans. Enough about us! The crab risotto was an absolute delight. Beautifully presented and perfectly balanced flavours. My venison was melt in the mouth and faultless in preparation - cooked exactly to specification (as discussed with Richard when ordering). My other half was delighted with her chicken tarragon dish. Portion sizes are adequate for the heartiest of appetites. Amuse bouche and desserts also superb. A bientot.

Anticipating a nice meal after reading the reviews, Couch’s did not disappoint. From the greeting at the door on arrival to the most excellent trio of desserts everything was just perfect. The service 10/10 the ambiance 10/10 the food 11/10! Starting with delicious scallops and delicate crab risotto we both went on to the tenderist venison I think I’ve ever eaten. This restaurant is just perfect for that special occasion and we will definitely be returning.

We absolutely love this place. We've been returning customers now for nearly 7 years and try to travel up specially once a year. Fantastic food, great ambience and the staff are great. Richard is so down to earth and accomodating, Phil is a real asset, really making the customers welcome and you can't help but love his bubbly, happy character. And head chef Ricky does a fabulous job. We've never had a dish we haven't loved and have plenty of wonderful memories from our visits. Highly recommended.

Had a lovely night in Couches. Phil our server was so wonderful he made the night for us.. Good wine list, well priced. Food was beautiful. The amuse bouche soup was incredible. Also enjoyed crab risotto, fresh fish and the trio of desserts. Ultra professional and felt £75 for 3 course set menu was good value for the quality and presentation of the food. Richard the head chef is very welcoming too

Excellent meal, service and restaurant. Return visit to try new menu and it didn't disappoint. The restaurant is lovely with a intimate feel. The menu is £75pp which covers an amuse bouche of roasted tomatoes, with truffle oil, roll with sea salt and rosemary and three courses. For starters we both had the crab risotto which was both delicious and a generous serving. For mains we had the Roasted Hake and the Seabass. Beautifully cooked with with wonderful flavourings I am glad to say a good selection of vegetables. To finish, well I am a confirmed lover of a cheese selection but for a change went for the trio of desserts and I am glad I did as they were absolutely delicious. The service was excellent and friendly and Richard Cowans the chef patron's advise on the wines was spot on. The wine list is far from over priced for the quality and the venue. Restaurant closes mid November for the winter but will be back next year.

A completely perfect dining and social experience. The customer service was second to none. The ambience was exactly right, from the intimate vibe, to the lighting and table layout, and very unexpectedly, the music. The songs were mostly well established popular songs, but performed in a totally different way to the originals, which in turn reflected Richard's culinary blend of traditional ingredients, with a creative interpretation, which just so worked! We had the most marvellous time, and the food was incredible. Thanks you!

Amazing fresh and delicious food. Superb presentation and excellent service. This is a very high quality restaurant that caters for meat lovers, fish lovers and vegetarians alike.

Every year we travel the 330 mile round trip to stay for a couple of nights in Polperro in order to eat at this establishment. That is how highly we rate this rare treat of a dining experience. The food is excellent and the staff, wonderful. Richard is attentive, helpful and always willing to go above and beyond and Phil is just a delight. They make you feel special. Expensive, yes but then you get what you pay for and the table is yours for as long as you want it, so you’re never hurried and feel you could just chat over another bottle of wine or a delicious coffee after you have enjoyed an incredible meal that you will be talking about for ages afterwards.

Wonderful meal, and evening here. Very relaxed, quality ingredients and cooking. Fine dining, but you leave feeling have had a proper meal :) Will definitely come back , for the quality it is outstanding value for money compared to others in Cornwall. My husband and I had dinner here and it was so freaking good. Every course was top notch. Highly recommend a visit when in Polperro.

Great food, service and good value for the quality. 3 course meal plus amuse bouche £75 pp. The amuse bouche was really nice and shows how you can lift the quality of seemingly simple food to an a great and tasty level. Smoked salmon starter was excellent as was the scallop starter. that had 5 good sized scallops. Hake and chicken courses excellent and to finish a choice of either cheese or trio of mini desserts both of which were excellent. Wine not over priced and we had the Sharpham Dart Valley reserve which was new to us and will be looking to buy for home. Menu change soon so shall be going back. With my family we had chosen Couch’s for a special meal and that was exactly what we got! We started with a first offering of a tomato soup with bread and a butter accompaniment (this description does not to it justice) which was excellent, we followed this with a variety of choices, but I had the beetroot tart tatin which was both subtle and a good portion, for the main I had the filet steak which was perfectly cooked before we finished with the cheese plate. Everything was of the highest standard and cooked perfectly and elegantly presented. As on our previous visit the service was exemplary. The restaurant is not cheap but good things rarely are, it is well worth the money spent.

We had been wanting to dine at Couch's for a while and finally made it. We weren't disappointed, as the food was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed every course which combined delicious flavours with manageable portion sizes. The ambience was relaxing, classy and unpretentious. Many thanks to the wonderful front of house waiter, sorry we didn't get your name, but your style and sense of humour is spot on. Thank you to Richard for running such a wonderful restaurant, we are definitely returning as soon as possible.

Wonderful food served and cooked t perfection. Amazing sharing starter of smoked salmon, scollops, and much much more, followed by terrific fillet steak and trio of deserts. Outstanding

We dined here when staying in Polperro for a few days for my niece’s wedding at Trenderway Farm. The whole evening in this restaurant was fantastic. They have the ambience just right with the music at the right levels. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and chatty with a great smile. The food was absolutely superb. We could not fault any of the three courses. They even had a lovely dessert wine to finish off our evening with. To cap it all, the chef came out at the end of the evening for a lovely chat. All in all, this restaurant has all the credentials I would expect from a large city restaurant. If you are ever in the area, you MUST visit.

Wow, we had what we called the best meal we have ever had last Friday. The most amazing meal. The service was exceptional and the food was amazing. We were pleasantly surprised by the generous portions. The Amouse Bouche was so full of flavour as was the dressed Crab and Roasted Scallops. The cod was very very good and the Hake was amazing with what I called the ring of flavour Salsa Verde.... the chocolate bonbon was my favourite of the dessert trio although all good. A very very nice bottle of Pinot washed it all down nicely. Couldn't recommend it enough.

Had an amazing meal here last night. Its a beautiful restaurant, welcoming, friendly, with amazing food and service. I really liked the range of the menu and the wine list has been thoughfully put together. I cannot recommend highly enough and I look forward to returning.

OK, this is not a cheap place, but a great place. From the moment we got welcomed we felt completely at home and very well attended to. There is a quaint menu set up, but the way this is organized ensures great value and freshness of the food; there is only one menu available. Set price. Not many options for starters mains or desserts, which indicates that the chef knows what he’s doing. And he or she is!! This is cooking on high-level. Great balance in tastes, risks taken, gorgeous presentation, but most of all cooked and served with an abundance of love and professional knowledge. Our waiter seemed to be overjoyed with every plate he brought in, almost bursting with pride and anticipation for our reaction. Great wine by the way! So a well put together Winelist. Sometimes you feel somewhat disappointed and ill at ease when paying a bill that’s not worth the meal. But here I was more than overjoyed to settle our accounts. This restaurant cannot be over recommend! We loved it.

We visited Couchs this week for the first time, and hope it won't be our last. Amazing food, we had the mackerel and scallops as starters, the venison and chicken as our mains, followed by the cheese platter and the trio of deserts. Not a single mouthful of disappointment. The service was first class, nothing was too much trouble from Phil, and Richard came and chatted. Brilliant from start to finish!

After a little advance research I emailed to make a reservation (two weeks ahead!) and am so pleased I did. A simple three course menu providing enough options for all tastes and ensured you knew everything was fresh and cooked to order. Richard ensures he engages with all guests ensuring all their needs are met - supported by his excellent matre d (whose name I didnt catch) the whole experinece is excellent from the moment you step through their door. All courses were excellent at an extremely reasonable price.

Well, on arriving we were warmly welcomed by one of the staff who was brilliant, but as the evening progressed, it felt as though we didn’t fit in the eyes of the owner and head chef. Despite conversing extensively with the couple seated next to us and all the locals who were put on one side of the restaurant, he completely ignored us all evening. The food was great, but even as we got up to leave, we were ignored to the extent that we practically left without any acknowledgement from the owner who was standing no more than feet from us. There didn’t seem any rhyme or reason for it as he certainly had the time to have lengthy discussions with the holiday couple next to us, and ignored the fact that we were leaving at the end of what could have been a very pleasant evening. We couldn’t figure it out and having spent almost 200 pounds felt somewhat dissapointed.

We have been lucky enough to eat at Couch's several times and the meals are always consistently delicious. Great atmosphere, friendly, efficient service and great surroundings. Will definitely go again.

This was the best restaurant in my opinion in Polperro. It was like the cooking on Masterchef The Professionals. Outstanding food, will definitely go back when we return to Polperro.

A touch of class in Polperro. Food is impeccable and it’s certainly plentiful. We didn’t leave hungry unlike some high-end restaurants. Dress up and enjoy a gastronomic evening out. Staff were great too.

What an amazing restaurant! We’ve been to Michelin stared restaurants and I feel our meal was easily on par. The service was fantastic. We had a wonderful waiter who was funny and attentive. The food was incredible, couldn’t fault a thing. I’ve seen other reviews mention the portions were too big! Yes, the starter of warm duck salad did have a full breast of duck (bigger than the main we had in a restaurant the previous night!) but my fiancé certainly didn’t complain! We had a fantastic chat with Richard as we paid the bill which we really appreciated.You need to try this place but book weeks in advance if you plan to! We will certainly be returning.

We held our 30th wedding anniversary here and have to say we was blown away by the service from Phil and the amazing not only food but front of house from Richard I could not of asked for more and would like to thank them for making it a very special experience. Wish them all the very best and hope to see them again

We got to you late and bedraggled because of a no show taxi but you couldn't have made us more welcome.The service was so wonderful - laid back but professional.The food was to die for and totally insta worthy (I think that's what my daughter says).I would recommend you to anybody.Please don't change anything - you are fab !!!!Look forward to visiting next year - or sooner if we can get down from Yorkshire.

Couch is a lovely restaurant in Polperro. Management, service, ambience, quality of food excellent. Unfortunately my main course was spoilt by excess sauce, not detailed on the menu, which dominated the taste of the meal. Maybe an unusual comment, but perhaps the quantity of food on the plate was too large, smaller portions would suffice, the quality of food and cooking comes through.

Fabulous food & wine/ service excellent. Value for money.!!!.Fully booked until September...however we dropped on for a cancellation. Well worth asking!!!

Fabulous meal last night. Everything from the ambience, the friendly attentive staff and most importantly the food. Absolutely delicious and plentiful. We thought that the set menu offered extremely good value for money. The wine too was excellent and not silly prices like some restaurants. We would highly recommend eating here when visiting Polperro.

We had an excellent dinner here. The restaurant is a bit unobtrusive from the outside but it is very nice inside with tasteful furnishings and decor. The ambience is cozy, relaxed and very friendly, and the service was excellent and attentive. There is a good range of interesting dishes on the menu. Every dish we had was very nicely presented and very nicely cooked, and the helpings were generous. Couch's is a high-end restaurant offering a fine dining experience with a price tag to match, but it is definitely worth it..

Couch is a lovely restaurant. The decor and ambience is really good. Service is attentive and friendly. The foods is outstandingly good. The crab risotto was delicious. Luckily we had booked well in advance as thery were booked out for a month ahead by the time we ate. Strongly recommended.

Service was excellent, the welcome warm and the chef/patron attentive.Food was exceptional; our amuse bouche of roasted tomato soup and truffle oil served with a rosemary and sea salt bread was excellent and set the tone for the rest of the evening. My crab and pea risotto starter was delicious. The hake with curry sauce - wow. My partner had Scallops to start and a roasted cod main which were excellent. I visited on Wednesday with my husband and had a fantastic meal, one of the highlights of a rainy week in Polperro. All COVID rules were followed in a distanced, warm and friendly atmosphere. The owner and waiter were helpful and polite. I had scallops to start and my husband had crab risotto and we both had lamb for our main course with a bottle of house red which was as delicious as the food. For afters we had one trio of desserts and chose one plate of local cheeses. Again superb and all servings were generous. We can’t wait to visit again when in the area.

We had the pleasure of visiting this cosy and quaint restaurant last night after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor and I must say it exceeded our expectations..Richard the owner was very accommodating prior to my visit as I explained to him that I had OCD.He ensured that my table was the most socially distanced in the restaurant and kept asking if I was OK throughout the visit. Phil our waiter for the evening was polite, funny, professional and made our evening very enjoyable. He is a great asset to the business. Now for the food..... I don't normally like tomato soup but this amuse bouche was delicious. The best tomato soup that I have ever tasted and the homemade bread was also exceedingly good.My partner had the crab and pea risotto, which he enjoyed thoroughly and I had the scallops. Each dish was beautifully presented with great flavours, each item on the dish complimenting the other.The main was divine I had the hake with orange and curry cream sauce. I was skeptical at first about the sauce but there was no need for that. The fish was cooked perfectly, so succulent. I wish that I could have taken photos, but we just delved straight in as soon as the dishes arrived. My partner had the cod which was equally as good.The trio of desserts to finish was also very good.Overall a great experience, superb service, great ambience, exquisite food. What more could we want? We got talking to another couple who had been visiting Couch's for some time and they were as equally impressed with their meal. It was also good to spend the evening chatting away to them between courses. I would highly recommend this restaurant and have already booked again in a few weeks. To avoid disappointment, book in advance as they get fully booked quickly. Richard and Phil, thank you for a great evening and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

My wife and i went to this beautiful little restaurant for our 30th anniversary, and can honestly say that it was a fantastic meal, every course was of a high standard, the service was warm and friendly, and not overly intrusive, i would highly recommend this great restaurant

Fantastic food and great service. The presentation of the food was beautiful, the elements of each dish complimented each other very well and it was a well thought out menu. Both the owner and waiter were friendly and helpful and a great value add to the experience. Would strongly recommend. Only slight tweak would be an option for smaller portions as they were very generously sized.

The food speaks volumes at this place. It doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. The vegetarian options were as thoughtfully prepared as everything else. Front of house was great and the atmosphere was everything we wanted for a relaxed, chilled out polperro experience. One gets what one pays for. Thanks Richard.

We love our food and found Couch’s searching for best restaurants in Cornwall. The restaurant wasn’t open due to Covid but Richard (owner) was so helpful and friendly on the phone, we booked in for my Birthday meal.We then needed to find some accommodation in Polperro as we live 3 hours away - I will write a review for The Claremont Hotel which was great. The food at Couch’s is up there with the best food we have tasted. Make sure you go there hungry as the portion sizes are nice and generous. Between us we had roasted pepper soup, homemade bread roll, scallops which melted in your mouth, risotto, venison, cod and a cheese board. The food is just so good, we did not leave anything and I almost waddled out of the door!!! Our waiter Phil was lovely and immediately made us feel relaxed. Richard came and talked to us at the end of the evening too. We enjoyed it so much that we have booked again in November for my fiancé’s Birthday.

We had an evening meal at Couch’s last night and it was terrific. I started with Scallops and went for the venison main both of which were very very tasty. My wife had risotto to start and the lamb main course again, tip top. Desert was a trio affair of amazingness. First time at Couch’s and will most definitely not be the last. The food was everything I was hoping for and much more. I booked this restaurant a few weeks before we travelled to Polperro, having struggled to get a good restaurant in other parts of the country. Once we were seated the experience was fantastic. So glad I took the effort to look for restaurants in advance, as this is a gem of a place tucked away in a sleepy part of the world. My only small criticism if any was there was no local beers or ales, but that aside I was in food heaven. My highlight was the venison it was cooked to perfection Thanks to all the staff

We came to Polperro as a brief stopover in the early evening as we were heading back home from our holiday. It was a risk as we didn’t really know what was open (even with the wonders of Google) but it absolutely paid off. We were told by the restaurant owner, Richard (who actually served us) that Burgers in a Brioche is open in the Couch’s restaurant due to COVID. Oh wow was it good. The burgers were incredible but the Patatas Bravas side stole the show for me. We got a takeaway so we could go and enjoy it on the harbour, which Richard also recommended to us. The service was so friendly and quick and the food amazing and hot, which is exactly what we needed before heading back to reality! Could not recommend it highly enough! Thank you Richard!

Richard is now doing restaurant-standard main courses to takeaway on Thursday and Friday evenings. The choice is 4 high quality meals, which changes on a Thursday, at a cost of £13.95.Simple but genius idea - ideal for holiday makers and locals alike I think. Our meal was both hot and suitably packed (so much so, I didn't even transfer it to a plate; I am on my holiday.)Moreover, it tasted damn good, especially on a damp Friday night (after a 6am start, 300 mile drive and afternoon spent wandering around Looe).Enough said.

Best burgers we have ever had! Due to covid we had take away great packaging set up and incredible food! We will certainly be back!

We have taken advantage of Richard’s Burger in a brioche along with fine dining delivery service this week.The beef burger was succulent and full of flavour. I chose the sweet potato and chicken pea option which was equally as fabulous. The sides were generous and full of flavour,The fine dining options were stunning.My husband had the amazing fish pie and I chose the beef bourguignon. Both were absolutely amazing, full of flavour and generously portioned.To add to this both evenings our orders were delivered by Richard himself, a very personal touch from a very talented chef! We would whole heartedly encourage anyone to try this beautiful food. We can assure you would not be disappointed.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Richard has had to diversify, and that he has, with the most fantastic selection of burgers! The best we have ever had!! Don't go anywhere else for a burger, give yourself a real treat and have something really quite special. Enjoy!!Thankyou B in a B just brilliant!!

Enjoyed a fab takeaway on Saturday evening, delivered to our door by chef Richard. Food as always amazing & delicious. £2 from every meal donated to Cornwall Air Ambulance. Burger night on Thursday & we look forward to this Saturday's takeaway.

Very lucky to get a cancellation for Valentines Day and so glad we did! Fabulous food, great ambience, excellent staff and talented owner/chef all added up to a memorable evening!

I’m a bit late posting this review but what an excellent way to spend Xmas Eve. Couch’s is an intimate restaurant in the heart of Polperro and our experience could not have been better. Starting with the warm welcome from Richard and continuing throughout the meal, we were thoroughly delighted with our choice for the occasion. There is an obvious pride in delivering a first class customer experience and the quality of the ingredients in each dish was as good as it gets. I can’t quite recall what everyone in our party of 5 chose but speaking for myself I was delighted that they had sold out of my first choice of cod and instead offered me fresh halibut which had been reserved for Xmas Day lunch. It was absolutely delicious and quite the best I’ve ever tasted. You’ve probably gathered by now that I was pretty impressed with everything Couch and there is no doubt that it will be top of our list in future visits to Polperro.

We were lucky to get a last minute table here early January. It's a very relaxing place with the tables well spaced with relaxing quiet music. Loved it here. Service attentive and laid back. Food was very good and the tomato soup with truffle oil we had as an amuse bouche was the best either of us have ever eaten. So so so good. I was less keen on my mushroom risotto as it was a bit too creamy without anything to enliven it. We both enjoyed the hake very much though I was surprised that it had a bit too much salt. Overall one can be assured of very good food here with an enjoyable ambience at a reasonable price. We would certainly return

Could not fault anything..Friendly warm greeting, and being awkward they went out of their way to change my pre starter and ensured it complemented the rest of the food I had chosen . Everything was delicious and the ambiance delightful. Perfect in every way. Glad it is not too far away as we will be back.

Visited Richard and his team twice during our stay in Polperro this year. Consistently fantastic service and outstanding food with very reasonable prices considering the quality. This will always be one of our favourite restaurants, just a shame it's so far from home.

Excellent! The starter was so delicious, I wanted to camp down there and spend the evening having tomato and basil soup with black truffle oil and the most heavenly rosemary and sea salt bread! We moved on to equally delicious mains and desserts. The service was great! Pity we're not here another night. We'd love to return to Couch's for another meal.

Great location, excellent service and friendly staff and chef. Superb food - cod and hake were the main meals of choice for us - all very good. Went for the 3 course option. Didn't think that the offspring (now 21 and 18 years old) would like the amuse bouche of roasted tomato soup with truffle oil but it was pronounced 'superb' and I agree. Really, really good. Exactly what an amuse bouche is supped to do - tease and set you up for the meal to come.

Been going to Polperro, annually for nearly 2 decades but never came to Couchs before as always thought it a bit too upmarket , what a mistake that was..... Finally came after a friends recommendation and what a treat we had. the whole evening was a delight , the quality of the food and the recommended pairing of the wine was top class at a very reasonable price. portions were very generous and service was friendly, relaxed and informal. Richard, the owner came out to speak to his guests at the end of service and was really friendly and informative about his restaurant and food sourcing. Friendly service with a 5 star quality Having visited Polperro over many years I plucked up the courage to book a table at Couch’s restaurant ! And wasn’t disappointed excellent food back up with a friendly service

My first time at the restaurant and I will definitely be returning. Looked after from the moment we entered, the owner and chef happily offered to look after our luggage in our chosen booth style table whilst we had a pre drink elsewhere.

To find such a superb restaurant In such a small place was a gem.

Visited Polperro in July and dining at Couch's was a highlight. It was so good we had dinner there twice during our 4 day visit.

We visited for an evening meal. This was our second visit. The staff are really nice and service is high quality yet friendly. I like the decor too. The food choice was good and it’s hard to choose, I like the way they tell us where the meat and fish comes from. The food is well cooked and nicely served. Portion sizes are generous, I’d be happier with less food as in a nice restaurant I like to have 3 courses rather than cut one out. They served a tasty amuse bouche of tomato soup and truffle oil, and also pre dessert of orange posset. I think it was this that filled me up! The wine list was well selected too, catering to all budgets and tastes. Worth a visit.

All in all, we had a lovely meal at Couch's, impeccable service and very good food. Our starters, the scallops and chorizo, were excellent, pure magic, but the mains needed some more finesse, eg. the skin on the duck breast wasn't crispy, and the lamb could be a bit more tender and a bit more on the pinker side. The two dishes were also very similar, except for the sauces.

A must to visit for fine dining..... excellent service... Fine wine and food cooked fresh and to perfection....the ambiance is exquisite.... Thank-you for a wonderful evening....

Outstanding dinner and service. 5 courses and every one was utterly delicious. Couch’s is located in the heart of Polperro. Recommend to book in advance as it’s very popular.

We have been coming to Polperro for many years and always try to get to Couches as it’s such a wonderful eating experience ....Richard is so passionate about food and such a lovely young man ...great service fabulous food ....you will not be disappointed....

This hidden gem of a restaurant in little Polperro is absolutely outstanding. The food is out of this world and actually good value as well. The welcome is very friendly with Richard welcoming us and chatting while we settled in for his 5 course menu. We can’t wait to go back again in September.

Wow ! This place is special . We had the 5 course menu and boy was that the right decision because the tomato soup amuse bouche , with a beautiful , muffiny textured roll with rosemary salt is quite possibly the work of a culinary genius . We followed this with the beetroot tatin . Unbelievable that the humble beetroot could taste this good , and the goats cheese was the best I've ever eaten , creamy and morish. Next came the rump of lamb , potato fondant , veg and jus . And what a jus it was , could've drunk it , divine . Next came , and I found this hilarious , the pre dessert dessert of orange posset with passion fruit, gorgeous . Finally came my banana tatin with cream . This was our first night in Polperro and it was lush . The barman / waiter was a lovely chap and it was nice that chef Richard came and said hello . This place will be the first place we will book when we come to Polperro again .
