Cotton Eyed Joe's in Torbay

It was my boyfriend and I's first night in Torquay and we fancied steak so we found Smokey Joe's. I 100% recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Torquay. The steak was cooked perfectly, the BBQ sauce was so delicious and their cocktails were perfect (I personally recommend the Alabama Slammer).

Had a really good meal and the service was excellent. However, it is pricey for what you get. Parking can be a problem if it's a busy time or weekend as all the payable spaces on the road outside are often already taken. There is a parking lot over at Living Coasts in the harbour but it's a good 5-10 minute walk back to the restaurant so allow plenty of time.

The staff here were brilliant very helpful . The food was absolutely phenomenal cooked to perfection on the 3 days i visited over Easter . I had fillet steak med rare with no glaze . I also had 2 bacon toppers as the bacon was that good . My family also joined me for one night and they said the same as me the food was phenomenal . Cant recommend this steak house enough . Complements to the chef. Cant wait to come back wish i lived closer.

Nathan, Jenna and the rest of the staff at this wonderful steakhouse were absolutely phenomenal. The food was fantastic and cooked to perfection and really reasonably priced too. Can't wait to return for another meal and excellent company. Cheers guys.

So at first I wasn’t actually too keen on eating here but my boyfriend insisted on us eating here, I gave it a go and I was extremely happy with the outcome(my belly was happy too) I’d definitely come back here when I next visit the town!

The food was amazing with such a fresh taste, came down for holiday and it was amazing! Definitely recommend, waitress was extremely polite and everything is clean.

Nice place, great music, fantastic service and nice food, would I rush back.. nope, food was well over priced, for the price you pay and the type of place it is you expect them to make their own sauces,BBQ sauce was a bottle from tesco's slapped on the table, eyes was burning when I left from the cooking... all in all, not a place I would rush back to but the staff are very friendly and helpful

Good service and great portion sizes. Can be busy so best to book in advance. Fairly priced for the quality of the food. Parking is available at the front or round the area. Good location should you wish for a stroll down the seafront. I will be back

There is nothing authentic about the food at all. Having a sauce bottle with Tesco written on it tells you all you need to know. The nachos had melted cheese only, nothing else other than small pot of BBQ sauce. The food was very disappointing all round. The meat cuts were cheap and not a butcher quality for the pricing. The ribs were equally as bad in quality as the steaks. it’s called Smokey Joe’s so you would expect a Smokey BBQ taste, alas it does not exist. The service was OK, nothing special. Safe your money and go somewhere else would be my advice.

Very nice food but be prepared for the smoke coming out of the kitchen. By the time we finished our food we were smelling of fried food.

My partner decided he would like to go here for his birthday. He had a great time. We had booked a table and arrived at the restaurant to be met by a few people stood right by the door, smoking. We asked them to move, which they did. We were met by a member of staff who showed us to our table. we ordered drinks, which came quickly. Ordered starters. Three of our party had starters, which was very nice but the prawns were over cooked. Mains came after about 15 minutes which was ok for us. All nice and you do get a lot for your money. All in all a great night and we will be returning. The place was clean and tidy and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We went on a Saturday night and it wasn't that busy. The only problem we found was the music. We think they should play country music as it is that kind of place and it did got louder as the night went on.

8 of us went here for a birthday meal. I’d asked in advance if it was ok to bring a cake and they had put a happy birthday banner on the table. The food came out hot and there are always huge portions. One of our table us accidentally ordered something spicy and they brought her out an alternative burger free of charge. Lovely service, huge portions, tasty food and a relaxed atmosphere. One of our favourite places

AVOID! Food was mediocre to say the least but the customer service was even worse. People who arrived after me were being served before me, once i brought this to staffs attention i was urged to ‘be more patient’. You’ll be better off buying a frozen steak from Asda and cooking it yourself.

Visited Smokey Joe’s tonight and had a very nice meal indeed! The staff couldn’t do enough for us, so friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend the garlic prawns, Mac cheese and rib eye steak. I’m quite fussy about my cocktails and the mojitos were made perfectly! Well done all at Smokey’s, I look forward to coming again soon

Eat here regularly with my daughter or my friends. We have always been well looked after and food has been well cooked and presented!

I recently dined at Smokey Joes and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. The customer service was subpar, creating a less-than-enjoyable atmosphere for what should have been a pleasant meal.

PLEASE AVOID FROM THIS UNHYGİENİC PLACE! I think most of the 5 star reviews are from their family and friends.The woman who works there picked her nose 🤢 and she is the one who cooks ın the kitchen.Shamed I have seen this after I finished my dinner! The steak wasn't tasty and the price was too high for that untasty steak.We wouldn't go there again.

Honestly absolutely amazing went for my sister birthday, about 35 people went pre ordered our food the night before all came out hot and quick! No waiting about. We visit Smokey Joes quite frequently, we have family in Devon so anytime we come back we always arrange a family sit down here. First off the food is always 10/10 every time without fail. The staff are also ever so friendly and go out of their way to make it an enjoyable experience and you have good chat with them also. Wouldn’t think about having a family get together anywhere but Smokey Joes. Need more family run restaurants like this!

I visted on a Tuesday evening, so mid week, on first impressions the restaurant is incredibly well presented in an American style cafe/diner, it had a very good mix of music playing for the theme of the restaurant, alot of good tracks ranging from rock and roll to swing, then the menu is varied and is again in check with the theme, smokehouse. Very reasonably priced for the quality of food that arrived. I have added photos and I am absolutely flabbergasted by the sheer presentation of the food that was served to us, it was stunning and it didn't stop there, the quality of the food was beautiful, the combinations were tasty. The only criticism that I had is the prawns were served with quite alot of oil from the cooking of them whixh seeped into my chips, however I thoroughly enjoyed the food, and the deserts were just something else. Thank you for making my evening a lovely one.

Disappointing experience to be honest. Positives - The staff were great and the atmosphere was okay but badly let down by the food. The combo starter of garlic mushrooms, spicy chicken bites, chilli chees bites and onion rings were obviously frozen and deep fried and apart from the cheese, devoid of any flavour. We both had fillet steak which wasn't rested properly and left a pool of blood on the plate. However, to be fair the cook and the taste was very good. Shame about the cajun fries. You cannot call potatoes cut that thick fries! Again these are bought from the cash and carry (we saw the boxes) and were dry and had no cajun seasoning at all. When mentioned, they brought us some more which were exactly the same. Deserts of Key Lime Pie and Biscoff Cheesecake were fine. We did receive a complimentary round of drinks as they were aware we were unhappy. £110 for two people wouldn't be too bad with two drinks each as long as the food was freshly prepared. For frozen starters and chips, extortionate. Female toilets were a mess with toilet paper everywhere and the men's could do with a bit of attention. On this basis, we will not be visiting again.

Fabulous food, I visited recently with all my family, a party of 8, everyone enjoyed the food, service was very good. We used to visit regularly also when it was called Cotton Eye Joe's! Will certainly continue to visit when in torquay and highly recommend.

Horrid place, please avoid. The place was empty on. Saturday night which should have made us turn around and leave but we didn't as my partner really fancied a steak. There were lots of staff there but the welcome was far from warm. The place was in need of a very good clean, there were lots of ornaments/decorative items everywhere but they were covered in dust and cobwebs. Seeing as the staff had no one other than us to carry food to, I would have thought they could have spent their downtime to clean. There is no table service, all orders have to be placed at the bar and paid for immediately. The toilets were even dirtier and shabby than the dining area. The food wasn't great, my partner was really disappointed with the steak and I didn't enjoy my food either.

This place is amazing we had a fabulous meal and the pulled pork was the best we've ever tasted, the staff were great and we will definitely be back.

We had the mixed sharing starters, but it didn't look very advertising, as it looked like a grid of beige food, taste was a bit dry, the only bit that wasn't dry was the chilli cheese bites. Wife enjoyed the burger, said it was the best she had for a while. The steak I had was also cooked well, but all the accompaniments were very poor and dry. Staff were quick and efficient, but not that friendly. Decor was wild west, plus old music. I was hoping for more original smoked meats cooked low and slow, but it was more like an Tex-Mex. Overall, it was OK.

Walking in it had that nice feel of an American (Southern especially) diner. The waitress who served me was lovely and always checked up on me which is what you look for in a restaurant. Can’t share enough how much of a hidden gem this place is. Amazing cocktails, food, rock n roll music and amazing staff. We absolutely have to come to Smokey’s when we come to Torquay. Really sad to hear about ‘runners’ which means they only do pre payment in the summer. Businesses like this add so much character and charm to a place and we should cherish them. Great place to eat and visit. Food was hot and delicious. Seasoned chips were very tasty. We tried steak, chicken, ribs, prawns, pulled pork and ribs! Staff were very good, friendly and worked really hard. Would recommend to visit if you like American foo and a diner experience. Some recommendations to improve: A loyalty stamp card to encourage repeat regular customers. Maybe get a discount on 5th/10th visit or free drink. Or birthday incentive. Coleslaw/beans were small portions. If you require more then asking for a free refill could be a good option as well. Tables for 2 are a bit near each other. Would prefer a bit more privacy when dining out.

We had a lovely dinner I had stake and ribs and my girlfriend had ribs all with chunky chips it was delicious my stake was tender and the ribs was falling off the bone tender, I would recommend Smoke Joe's.

Oh my days! What a fantastic restaurant! We went in with an open mind (as ever) and we were so pleasantly surprised. The decor and atmosphere was fun, cosy and inviting. The staff were joyful, welcoming, friendly, informative, considerate, prompt and gracious. Now, to the star of the show: our food... We had half rack ribs and mac 'n cheese to start. Then a medium rare fillet steak and a rare ribeye steak for our mains. THEY WERE ALL STUNNING! The ribs were nicely sticky and fell of the bone. The mac 'n cheese was cooked perfectly. The mains were untouchable! Cajun chips were crispy, fluffy and lightly spicy. Coleslaw was fresh and delicious. The steaks were both cooked to perfection: Juicy, tender, incredibly tasty and almost ethereal. If you get the chance, do not hesitate in trying this place out. Thanks to all involved. We shall return in the next few days. Xx

First visit and will definitely go again. Steaks were a good thick cut and cooked how we asked plus the service was great. Fair pricing too. I would of liked more draught beer choices as there is only budweiser but that's being picky and it does not warrant marking down. Thoroughly recommend 👌

Best American food in Torquay had a meal here on our final night of holiday and I don't regret. I would have gone here again food was spot on and drinks. Friendly staff and if you like big portions say no more, happy staff and American food I recommend highly over Jack's. Also has lovely bit of rock and roll playing :)

Food was okay. Nothing special but not awful. A little overpriced. Doesn’t display good hygiene rating at the entrance which is always a bit dodgy. *looked up good hygiene rating, got a 1 out of 5 in March 23 so be warned!
