Cote Brasserie - Birmingham in Birmingham

A sunny Saturday afternoon meet up with friends. We sat outside and enjoyed sharing a bottle of fizz before eating. The outside area is a lovely setting with lots of big umbrellas. We all enjoyed the food but we did find the portion sizes a little small. For example, we had the baked Camembert which was tiny for a sharing dish as advertised. Luckily we had also ordered the calamari, which was some of the best we had tasted! A bit of extra bread and some olives and it was fine. We all enjoyed our main course choices and we had room for pudding which was a bonus. Delicious chocolate fondant and my friends loved their crème brûlée. Very nice rose wine too. All in all, a very enjoyable afternoon /early evening. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. I would eat here again.

Excellent service as normal from the team at Côte, we appreciate the consistency of the cooking and presentation, a chain that does it better than most that we’ve enjoyed for over 7 years. Very sad though to learn they are closing on 19th May, another quality place lost from the Mailbox in Birmingham. We noticed so many empty units, it’s looking sad, more a place for hens and stags now.

We have visited Cote for dinner in Birmingham many times over the years and have always found it to be a positive experience for both food and service. We arrived to spend the weekend in Birmingham on Friday and felt this was an easy dinner option for our first evening. The menu had changed since we were last here but still a wide, accessible choice offered, and I ordered close to my usual dish along with a slightly changed side. I was slightly disappointed with what was served, quite personal and subjective regarding the vegetable change on the side dish, but the potatoes served with the main were definitely not as described and the chicken was a bit dry and not up to usual standards. For the record, my partner was very happy with the food he received and we agreed to share some of the food so we could both eat the meal with some enjoyment. Francesca, our server, checked with us shortly after she had delivered the order and I explained I was disappointed as the potatoes were not as described and my minor (very) personal disappointment about the switch from peas to beans on the side dish, all quite light hearted. Francesca immediately offered to replace any dishes we were not completely satisfied with and I explained we were happy to share food, that we would eat the dishes and all was fine. We were shortly approached by the manager, Sola, who offered the same and we explained we were just expressing personal views (the potatoes were definitely all kinds of wrong but a minor niggle as my partner ate them and I had his chips) and that we had already decided we had found a way we could both eat and enjoy our meals. We have been in this situation only twice before in other restaurants in other cities and had found expressing such feedback and then refusing replacements or other remedy, as we had decided to make the most of things, had resulted in quite aggressive responses from managers which had made a relatively disappointing experience into a deeply unpleasant one...you'd think we would learn eh?, Most places seem interested only in the potential for a negative review and need to throw something at it, but where can they go if you decline having decided to make the most of it yourselves? Thankfully, Francesca and Sola, as a team had a much more measured and reasonable response. They left us to our own devices and then comped a part of the bill and asked if we would like to remove the service charge...?! Erm...of course not! You just provided the excellent service we have always received here but actually upped your game in the face of a slightly disappointed response for feedback... Exceptional service is quite difficult to find these days, but Cote provided it and then some in this visit and I think that is actually far more important when folk make the effort to eat out in a COL crisis and want to feel valued. That is how this duo made us feel; thank you for keeping up the Cote Birmingham culture which we have come to know and enjoy. Francesca and Sola!

A group of ex-work colleagues had dinner here recently. A very smart restaurant with a good menu range, especially the prix fixe menu, excellent value. Food and service was very good and we would thoroughly recommend it to others.

I don’t like chain restaurants but cote is an exception, I have never been disappointed - until tonight. Normally, the food seems fresh and cooked as if in a French restaurant not warmed through as in a chain. Here we had the opposite. Two French onion soups…thick, largely tasteless, not a big portion and with two pieces of toast on the side. It was too hot, just out the microwave I suspect. Not a great start. I followed it with beef cheek bourguignon - where the soup should not have been thick, the sauce of this should be but it was thin and watery. There was a smattering of carrots but no onions in sight. The beef was merely a slab on the top, not chunks throughout. My wife had chicken, it was ok but the course was dry, thankfully we were encouraged to pay extra for a very small pot of Diane sauce, a few half roast potatoes were also non the plate. We also added a side of ‘rosemary’ fries, £5.50 for about a dozen or so chips that had seen a sprinkle of rosemary from 100m. Honestly this was dire…10% service charge took us to £100 - daylight robbery but it was my wife’s birthday so I held my tongue. Second star because the rose wine was ok but as far as Provence versions go not the greatest. Avoid!

Poor meal. Steak was not good and was cooked blue when I asked for rare. When taking the meal away the server asked if it was ok asi had left most of it I said no. He said he would get the manager. She came and said they recommend their steaks to be cooked for at least medium. No offer of recompense. Service was good but attitude by the manager and steak quality poor.

Mediocre place. Is lovely on the inside but the service and food were terrible. Food was lukewarm/cold. So disappointed since it was a special occasion with the family. I ordered a medium rib-eye but a lot of it was cooked to medium rare which I don’t enjoy. Took an hour for our mains to be served to us. Probably would have waited longer if we didn’t speak up and say. Definitely not what we expected. So upset with how it has been. Such a shame the staff are terribly trained in cooking steaks and just basic customer service.

My husband and I ate dinner here on Friday 29th September 2023. I had the moules frites and my husband ordered the roasted lamb rump - both meals were cooked to perfection. The atmosphere in the restaurant was lovely - cosy and relaxing. Special mention must be given to the staff. We were served by two charming waitresses who were welcoming, friendly and helpful. A very enjoyable experience. We will definitely eat here again and recommend.

Had a nice weekday evening here, the food was better than last visit (pork belly last time was a bit tough, Gruyère in the dauphinoise was too overpowering, but this time the chef achieved the perfect balance and crispy crackling). Service was excellent, thank you Francesca

Good location in the Canal basin. Polite service. Food terrible. Poached eggs were like shuttle cocks. Cant understand how the kitchen/chef thought they were expectable to send out. Too vinegary & not drained made the muffin mush. I did send it back & they generously did not charge for the other breakfasts that were very below par.

Fantastic meal and excellent service. I had the parfait and the beef bourguignon and husband also had the parfait and fillet steak, which he said was cooked to perfection. A real enjoyable meal and will return soon. First class!

Very disappointing! Actually went here last night with different friends and gave it a great review. Tonight was very different! Very poor, slow service. Was so looking forward to a dessert but was running out of time and the waiter couldn’t guarantee we could get a quick delivery of our food!!!

Lovely outside seating area. Super French food. We had cheese soufflé and Breton fish stew. Will definitely dine here again.

Poor and careless management the female manager very rude and food was disgusting feel sick for couple of days! That branch definitely need more servers, better chefs and friendly polite manager to deal more professional with complaints!

A pleasant lunch eaten outside. The new menu is good, I loved the steak tatare (way better than The Ivy in my opinion). Service fine, though not as attentive as usuual, perhaps because it was quite busy.

Best French onion soup! Had a lovely lunch, Calamari, 2 x onion soup, steak frites. Nice sunny location right by the canal. Loved it. Deffo will be back.

Excellent as usual. 70th birthday celebration dinner and not disappointed. Efficient service by very pleasant staff, and beautifully cooked food. We've been regular visitors to Cote for a number of years and it is always constantly reliable.

Not as good as other Cote restaurants I’ve been to. The crab starter wasn’t great. Got a salad for a main and the leaves didn’t seem very fresh. Sadly disappointing

A group of eight old school friends- the staff went out of their way to provide a suitable table! The friendliness of the staff cannot be praised highly enough- they were amazing! Excellent service, excellent food and a lovely atmosphere. I hope to return on my next trip to Birmingham.

What an amazing evening again at cote , this restaurant is second to none . From being greeted at the door , always so welcoming the choice of menu , always monthly changing , the quality of the food always freshly produced with such speed but allowing you to enjoy it at your pace , we were looked after by florin , a most charming waiter who’s professional skills made the evening special , very attentive but we weren’t harassed, nothing was too much trouble , we have been to this restaurant several times and each time the standard is as equally high , not often found in chains , you would think it was family run ! Can’t Recommend highly enough and always value for money !

Can not thank Cote enough for making our visit with granddaughter something special. I asked for a nice table as it was our granddaughter’s birthday. She was addressed by her name when we came in and taken to our table where there was a card and box ofnMaltzers waiting! Slight confusion as we all thought we were at the wrong table! Through the meal the friendly and attentive service did not waiver and she was made to feel this was an occasion, culminating with a complimentary dessert sporting a lighted candle and most of the staff coming to the table to sing Happy Birthday. Of course other diners joined in and this gave a very jolly atmosphere. Our meals were all very good as we would expect; we are Cote lovers! Never had a bad meal or bad experience in any of their restaurants and we have dined at a few around the country. It is our ‘go to’ chain. I wonder if those that say otherwise are ‘discontents’ ? It’s bistro dining not Coq D’or.

Lovely restaurant overlooking the canal. The staff are very pleasant and attentive. Food is generally delicious. I had the French onion soup as a starter and duck. You may need to order extra veg tho so do ask.

Everything runs smoothly here. From the easy online booking to when you are first greeted to the waiters, and the food was excellent - Pissaladdiere, calamari, goat cheese, roast seabass with champagne beurre blanc, escalope de veau, confit canard and pork tenderloins to the very tangy and excellent lemon tarte, it was an excellent Sunday lunch for the whole family. I would definitely recommend and go back again. The crepe dessert was very good too. :-)

The friendliness and attentiveness of the staff made this a memorable evening before heading off to the hippodrome. The food was delicious, with a diverse menu to suit everyone. A big thank you to all the staff who gave my birthday a real sense of occasion, their warmth and generosity was a lovely surprise. I would definitely recommend.

After a long business day in Birminghan I was looking forward to a good meal with a friend. We chose Cote as it was quite near to where we were at the time. The initial greeting was very friendly but unfortunately the overall impression of our evening was one of slight disappointment. The ensuing service was friendly but slow, with two errors in the order, which were corrected but they should not have happened. The chips were far too salty and I was told that all I had to do was "ask for unsalted next time". We had two drinks to start and then only a glass of wine each but the final bill was a bit of a shock given the very average experience. Unfortunately I would not recommend.

Great menu, good food and value for money. We had a late lunch here and would recommend this restaurant, worth visiting. Good service as well

Spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon working our way through some excellent dishes. We particularly liked the appetiser of anchovy on sourdough bread, excellent charcuterie board and perfectly cooked rib eye. Roll on the Cote in Solihull opening I will be one of their first customers!

Disappointing they don’t know how to cook a steak. Food was totally tasteless and bland. I won’t be back.

After condescending staff at Marco pierre whites it was lovely to be warmly greeted at Cote.Water provided straight away, good set menu, lovely service, good wine and generally really well looked after by professional, smiling staff We'll be back.

Well this branch of Cote gets better every time we come this time the young waitress called Bethany I think (ear wigging) very kind very friendly very welcoming too many restaurants these days rely on food alone and not the atmosphere . The staff make a restaurant and these staff are the best lead by Bethany . Really great

We have now visited this restaurant twice in January, each occasion a celebration. There is an excellent and varied menu plus a separate menu for gluten free dishes. It is interesting to know that any selection from the gluten free menu is overseen by the Manager. Whilst most restaurants now cater for gluten free requirements, the menu at the Cote Brasserie is particularly extensive, hence our restaurant of choice on both occasions, especially the importance they put on getting it right. The food we have had to-date has been excellent, well cooked and tasty. My favourite starter is the sizzling garlic king prawns in tomato and side order of crusty soda bread.

Booked a table for a pre-theatre meal and was quickly shown to our table. Busy restaurant but the staff were helpful and the level and speed of service was very good. Food prices were very good for a city centre restaurant as were the drinks. Had a small problem with the dish i had ordered but this was very quickly and efficiently sorted out and a replacement of my choice was swiftly brought, would not stop me from booking again. In all a recommended restaurant.

Food was way beyond expectations. Four diners all impressed. V much like a proper Bistro and not like any chain I’ve been to. French Onion soup and the Cassoulet delightful. Pushed on through with the cheese. Also cracking.

Visited cote for my birthday, on arrival our table had been decorated for my birthday and were given a champagne cocktail on the house. The food was really nice as always. The staff are the stars for me friendly and attentive without ever being intrusive. Thank you cote, will definitely be returning.

An early New Year’s Eve set menu with wines provided a lovely choice of options with five options for each of the three courses, individually and very nicely paired with matched wines.

Cote are usually pretty good, certainly better than Cafe Rouge which has declined heavily in recent years. But this Cote is actually a fantastic restaurant, the food is excellent, the staff attentive and fun to engage with but without being too in your face. I genuinely love coming here, it's easily my favourite place to eat.

I ate here this evening with my friend. The lady and gentleman who served us were both absolutely first class, and we had a really lovely time. They were attentive, friendly, and prompt, without being obtrusive. I was incredibly impressed.

Visited for the two course lunch - very good value. Had cauliflower soup and the haddock parmentier which was very hot and tasty and quick service. Great for a quick lunch or evening meal. Nicely decorated restaurant and, even though there was a big office party there it was in a sectioned off area and so the noise was kept away from the other diners.

I love the Cote restaurant chain and have always given great reviews of the ones I've visited...until this one. Four of us were staying in Birmingham for the weekend and I booked ahead. The others had never been to a Cote before and I have to say it was not a good experience. The service was embarrassingly poor. We waited an absolute age to be served with no acknowledgment at all. The food, when we finally received it, was deemed to be 'OK'. The staff, most unusually for Cote, seemed agog with indifference and I don't think they even noticed when we left. For once I begrudged paying the 12.5% service charge. A few days later we visited the excellent Cote, St Martins Lane, London for a pre-theatre meal. What a difference!

Birthday celebrations with 8 friends on the pre ordered Christmas menu. Service excellent, food hot delicious & happy team always ready to pour drinks, take pictures and generally add to the fun of our night!

Staff very welcoming and efficient for a large group. Good job we had pre- ordered. Food was good and well presented and the only criticism was my steak knife was very blunt! Otherwise very good

It’s average food at just above average prices. There’s really nothing wrong with the food or service. If chain restaurants are for you then I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

As ever, Cote never fails! Fab service and food - oh, and first time in the Mail Box and WOW! Only negative (and nothing to do with Cote)..... clean up the waterway immediately outside the eateries!

Haven't had a bad meal here, steaks are good, as is the fish, its not cheap but I think it is worth the extra for good food, something which is becoming very difficult to find !

We have been here twice now, for breakfast. Both times the staff were brilliant. They are very welcoming, seat you promptly, take your coat, ask how you are/how your week has been, and take the time to find out how you want your food/drinks. During the meal, they also checked that everything was okay with our food and if we wanted anything more e.g. toast, drinks.

We visited here before a show at Birmingham Town Hall, it was a really cold and damp evening but entering Cote Brasserie was lovely as it was warm and welcoming, the ambiance and friendly staff made it extra special! We had the set menu at £19.95 for 3 courses and every course was excellent - the mussels as a starter were superb done in a cream and cider sauce, the chicken main was lovely and tender and the ice cream dessert was fab! All in all a great place and good value, food was excellent served on piping hot plates and a good choice of drinks and wine and extra good value as being a TH/SH member, you get 20% off the total bill! I didn't realise Cote were a chain as we visited one in Shrewsbury in the summer which was just as good! Keep up the good work!!

Called here yesterday for lunch with my wife. Lovely ambiance and friendly welcoming staff. We opted for two courses from the specials menu. I had the Baby Gem salad which was excellent. My wife had the Chicken Liver Parfait which was also very good.

I have been to several “cotes” and have never been disappointed. I recommended it to some colleagues (12) of them, which is always risky but all of them enjoyed the food, and served on hot plates . The service was excellent. We repeated the visit 3 weeks later and was just as good.

We visited Cote for breakfast several times during our stay at The Mailbox. The food and coffee were very good. Being a coffee snob from Australia, that says alot.

Brilliant lunch last Saturday having been let down by Malmaison. Super attentive service; great food and ambience. We all loved it and had a fabulous couple of hours. Thankyou!

Had an excellent meal, the service was friendly and the staff knowledgeable. Portion size was good, and we all enjoyed the food we chose. LGood atmosphere and in an excellent setting. Would be nice to go back when it is warmer, to sit outside.

We had an excellent 3 course set dinner prior to the 7pm time and there are two different menus to choose from. The Prestige and the normal set menu which we chose at £11.95 for 2 courses and £14.95 for three course. We started with the salmon rillettes with dip which were very tasty. The for mains we had the chicken and the beef, again very good. For desert we chose the iced berries but asked for and had vanilla ice cream with same. As it was October there was also the French Martini Cocktails which were very good and went lovely with the desert. With large glass of rose wine the total bill came to £41.00 which included the 12.5% tip. If you do not want that on your bill but want to leave your own tip then just mention this when asking for the bill. The service was excellent and we have alwys had good food and service when dining here. Regards Gary Saunders

This is the first review I have felt compelled to add because of this outstanding restaurant.

Been there with wife and kids for lunch. To be honest food wasn't tasteless ... nothing amazing anyway, but portion... it was just unacceptable. My son order kids breadcrumbs cod, two small pieces of cod (two!!!) some fries and dry peas... I ordered beef stew kind of think for 17 £... one spoon of mush potatoes soggy heart shape toast and I swear to god five table spoons of stew with about 4 pieces of meat in it. I was just shocked. My wife sea bass was ok. When I asked for bill, woman came with it and I saw some 12,5% Of charge for waitress... how rude... they already put some tip on the bill without my knowledge. I won't ever be back I'm sorry

pre concert dinner on a warm summers evening this place really fit the bill.

Tried the two course for 15.99 starter and a main course, toast and pate and a rib eye steak. The food was generally ok but when they delivered my steak with rocket lettuce and small bucket of chips I was stuck for words where’s my vegetables at least tomatoes or mushroom???? Then to top it all they added a gratis tip to my bill how cheeky was that and no disputing the fact .?

Visited with my mum for late breakfast yesterday, hadn’t booked but found the staff so friendly and welcoming. Full English and vegetarian breakfast was lovely. Service was great, attentive but not over the top. Will 100% be visiting again.

We often visit Cote, Birmingham for lunch and always really enjoy the experience. Today we were served by Erjon and Luke and they really deserve a special mention. They made us feel so welcome and special. They went that extra mile and we can’t thank them enough.. we can’t wait to return.

Popped in here for a quick dinner pre show at the Alexandra. Very welcoming maitre d' and after we told the waiter that we were in a hurry, the food came out at lightening speed. Staff very attentive; our original waiter went on break but let his send in know about the time issue.

Situated at the Mailbox the Cote Brasserie has a lovely outside seating area looking onto the canal. There is also a fantastic green wall that adds to the atmosphere. The staff are friendly and attentive. We both had the vegetarian breakfast which was very tasty and filling. The restaurant also serves decaffeinated tea in teapots! Would definitely recommend the breakfast deal.

Nice atmosphere here and the staff are very friendly. I had French onion soup for starter which was lovely and for main I had fish parmentier (fish pie) which was ok but nothing special for it being from a restaurant I wouldn’t order it again if I went back. Nice restaurant in general but not amazing food

Every time I visit here the service is great. Attentive staff with personality and a great view if you sit outside. The food is good and a great price, I love visiting here.

I'm not a fan of The Mailbox, but this place is tucked away at the back by the canal, which is quite nice.

This place is by far the best Cote Brasserie we have been to. The food is so tasty, arrives hot and quickly. The staff are really friendly and attentive. The restaurant is clean and we all had a really great time.
