Costa Coffee in Carlisle

It was a very busy coffee shop but the coffee was very nice once served

The friendliest staff I've ever seen at a Costa, always up for a quick chat and even remember my order (being a regular).

I was waiting behind a crowd of people, the crowd left and I was the only person there. I was ignored for a while, then finally one of the servers asked if I wanted to be served. I said yes and then she pointed to two other people and said the queue is over there, it was not clear where to order and there had been no one there earlier. So after having waited in what I thought was the queue and then being ignored I decided to just leave without getting anything.

Was waiting in the line for a good 20 minutes when there was only 5 people infront and workers were chatting the whole time and it took a long time. Ordered a caramel latte and it was just milk and caramel!!!!!!!!! When I went in to tell them, they said that I was wrong…

I just want to say a big thank you to the lady that served me today. She served me on the till, then made my fancy new whipped up iced latte, heated and served my toastie and got me my cake- all whilst other staff members were incredibly busy too. I don't think people realise until you work in a busy chain such as Costa (I worked here for 2 years in a different store) just how many things you have to do. It can feel like you're an octopus! And then people have the gall to complain about wait times etc. You're all smashing it in there and I'm sure you don't get praised anywhere near enough!

A more unfriendly encounter that I had this morning would be difficult to find. I smiled at the surly young woman who returned this with a look that implied that she wished that she and I were not there. I am systematically visiting all the coffee venues In Carlisle city centre and I won’t be visiting this one again.

This has to be one of the best costa coffee houses in Carlisle, looking onto the square watching the world go by whilst enjoying the best coffee..Perfection The staff are always very outgoing, welcoming and very customer focused.

Having only been a couple of times (while the missus is shopping in Primark) I will give you my experience based off my most recent visit… We entered at around 4:30pm on a Saturday and we were served right away, the staff were all friendly and smiley which is always a bonus! The place itself was cosy and calming, there wasn’t an overpowering smell of coffee which I was happy about, the only thing that lets the place down is the lack of indoor seating, granted they can only work with the space that they have and it would be awful if everyone was crammed in and sat on top of each other. My partner and I had the peach iced tea which was nice and refreshing, I ended up having a second one by the time my partner had got back from shopping - I was told that there was a strawberry iced tea but they didn’t have the ingredients for it, frustrating as I definitely would’ve tried that! Location is very handy for a break whilst shopping and there’s a good selection of sweet treats to have a snack and a good drink. Just be prepared that you may have to sit outside!

Shelfs nearly empty not many choices ... since the others costas opened less chairs and tables .. staff very friendly but the space could be improved

Shop dead but wont lie down. Only half the tables in this shop now, since the new one in The Lanes opened. Service very slow. Coffee warm, not hot. Food decent. Sorry, but not impressed. Way below standard

Tiny place - struggle to get a seat. Hot chocolate is gorgeous & staff are friendly.

Let's start of with the fact I am disabled and struggle to walk, this is obvious to even the most clueless person, I mean the wobble, being hunched over and with a crutch isn't obvious at all (rolls eyes). Costa Carlisle city centre branch appears to have managed to employ someone (no name badge, dark hair and maybe had one or two too many sugars in her coffee) that sadly falls below this level. That or the Scottish accent made her screw her face up at me. I attended with my 8 year old daughter and our dog, a very short walk for me which still causes me a lot of pain. I entered via this door next to our outside table but was ordered to go back out and walk round to the front door, not very politely either. I did try to reason with her as I was already in the customer serving area but she wasn't having it and I couldn't be bothered with any further embarrassment. There is no signage saying this door isn't to be used and since what was now obviously staff using it I didn't think twice as it is propped wide open and looks like a main entrance to the shop. Anyway by time I walk round and with no one else in the shop now being served, I am left to stand and wait to be served, clearly she's power happy in her almighty position. Happily will never use this particular branch again. What an embarrassment to the Costa coffee chain, which I have to say have always been more than accomodating to my need for a little help. I will however say the other staff actually looked embarrassed at her behaviour. Very poor service and certainly won't be rushing back to be served by someone who clearly thinks she is better than her customers ever could be. Not shocked one bit to see so many bad reviews on Tripadvisor on this particular branch.

The establishment was fairly quiet, the staff looked busy however were busy doing nothing. The toilets were a disgrace, and not fit for use. As an eating establishment they should have far better standards.

Freezing cold day. Asked for a extra hot chocolate and it was perfect 😋 very tidy and clean. Good social distance measures in place. Polite staff

Picked up 2 chai lattes from Drive Through (one regular and one on coconut milk). unfortunately we weren’t able to finish as they were both way too spicy and too sweet , I guess the ingredients were poorly balanced out .

Enjoyed this little coffee shop ambience with my brother and 2 friends graduating with me from the University of Cumbria. Had some large hot drinks and pastries. Brewed to perfection and the pastries were excellent. Nice and warm break from the cold and rainy weather. Place was neat and clean and the staff were very polite and pro active.

Was there 29th October had a struggle getting through the door for smokers outside. The place looks dirty and tatty won’t go back

Went into Waterstone's for a look around and a Costa. Shock horror.. no Costa anymore. Its changed into a very expensive cold looking coffee/teashop. Have they changed every Waterstones I'm wondering. Hope not. 😢

Having found our usual Costa's nearby within Waterstone's bookshop temporarily closed for redecoration, we ventured into this franchise for our afternoon coffee. There were the usual groups of smokers hogging the outside tables, but inside several tables seemed empty. Once inside it immediately became apparent that both the table-tops and even the floor was filthy with waste food and litter. The whole place looked very grubby. We conducted an abrupt about-turn and bee-lined for the exit....pronto!

A small Costa in the Waterstones store which always seems busy with queues, so with limited seating, it is worth timing your visit to being outside peak eating hours ie. lunchtime etc. The staff were efficient but not particularly friendly - might have just been the day we were there !

What a sorry mess, the franchisee needs to get a grip, the place is filthy, dishwasher broken, no sugar, no napkins, the litter blowing all over the town hall from the tables outside is ridiculous i thought there were fines for littering carlisle city council couldn’t care less as the centre is a filthy embarrassment there are plenty smaller coffee shops - use them please

We have been a few times over the last couple of years, always hoping for an improvement- but alas no! This is the grubbiest most unkempt Costa we have ever been in. This is an embarrassment to Costa and Carlisle- get a grip!!

What you see is what you get! Could do with an upgrade as it’s quite gritty and the toilet, well lets not go there! Absolutely disgusting. Other Costas in the town are far better. Don’t appreciate the staff swearing in front of customers either. Tables dirty and no staff to clear them, ended up doing it myself. Will use the other branches in future

Walked in and couldnt believe the mess !! Both inside and outside. No tables cleared for sometime outside. Tables inside needed wiped. 2 Male staff chatting behind counter and no queue. Perhaps one of them could be out clearing up. We walked out and went elsewhere. Very dissapointed.

I’m a big fan of Costa Coffee and their coffees are always excellent in my opinion. Bearing that in mind I am rating this an average Costas as the premises were small a bit tired and not very welcoming. It was a lovely Saturday afternoon and we sat outside which was pleasant. Probably would have went elsewhere if we’d been restricted to sitting inside

Branch of Costa coffee situated beneath the clock tower. Serves coffees, teas, chocolates and a range of cold drinks. Range of sandwiches, Paninis and a large choice of cakes. Nice food and drink in the centre of Carlisle.

Lively and lovely place right in city center. Coffee is superb as usual and staff is really friendly.

I had no high hopes, but I had very little time to find some food. The Roast chicken salad looked nice, but it was an awfully small portion with couple of rather thin slices of chicken. It was tasty, but I was disappointed.

Central for everything so nearly always well patronised. A great cup of coffee and lots of snack treats for the hungry. Although nearly always full the waiting time is good as people tend to eat and drink and then leave immediately. I ve never been in and had to wait for a seat and it is a regular haunt of mine. Lots of help from Georgia and Leigh if you have shopping to carry and ask for your order to be delivered to your table for you. Always very willing to help. Warm and comfortable with the addition of books to browse as you drink! What’s not to like at Costas!

devoid of character and dining experience. Everything was 'nice' and as it should be in the photographs on the menu but lacked any personality and charisma. Why cant you just make coffee quickly instead of baristaring about with it. Coffee was ok as were cakes and scones but not really worth the money. Much better to have gone to an independent outlet where there is flair, creativity and no blandness.

I love love love Costa's! Personal favourite is the caramel latte! I've got a points card too which comes in handy for a free coffee now and then! Staff are always friendly. Also they do special winter drinks in the cutest christmassy takeaway cups! Always tasty drinks! Love to sit outside as well having a good old chit chat with friends or family either in the sunshine or in the winter wrapped up!

My wife and I called in thus Costs for coffee on the way to the railway station. It was busy and had a nice “buzz”.

This is the Costa in Waterstones. It has a bit more atmosphere than the other Costas with the same coffee and service. You can get a nice view into the street and of course you can always browse the books. It can be a little crowded at times.

I recently moved to the area and thought I’d go for a coffee whilst shopping. I’d never tried the mocha cortado and asked the lovely waitress how strong the chocolate was as I’m a fan of flat whites and mochas but not the flat mocha.

Slow, dirty, inconsistent, stand waiting while people served after you get drinks first! Apart from that good location!

Had to wait ages, not enough staff. The smoothies were good but were 5 mins later than the cakes! Queue was back to the door.

Queue to pay for overpriced coffee. Should be table service for the prices they charge.

Came in before catching a train. Use the Waterstones one regularly and its always good. Total overload on the chocolate on the cappuccino and the knife was dirty with the sandwich. Not as friendly either. Disappointing

I visited Costas in Waterstones this morning after finishing my shopping. I am a very regular customer there. This morning I had been struggling due to an arthritic knee playing up and as I put my tray down on my chosen table my knee gave way altogether! The coffee went flying all over the table and chairs. It was very embarrassing to say the least. The two young ladies on duty, Georgia and Leigh came over to help. Their main concern was whether I had been scalded but I had not. They cheerfully cleared up the spillage and provided me with a fresh coffee. I was full of apologies but they were very reassuring that it was no bother and I was to sit and enjoy the coffee they brought to me to replace the one I had lost. They made me feel that none of this was my fault, although it obviously was, and their kindness for two busy young people was exceptional. If Costas do an Employee of the month then these two should certainly be in the running for it. The coffee is always excellent at Costas and this sort of attention to a customer in difficulty is both unusual and an excellent example of customer relationship. Very warmly recommended in every way.

Have been coming to Costa's for nine years to the same branch. The coffee is lush, can't get enough. I love the coffee and the staff are excellent and friendly. This is the best place to drink superb coffee.

Standard coffee visit, amazing coffee!

Used to live coming here. The staff seem in a muddle. They are let down by equipment not working properly. Get your act together Costa. Help these guys do their job properly.

Extremely small and stuffy barely enough room for more then 3 people and there are far to many staff behind a bar its like being packed in like battery hens there is rubbish on the floor i may be confused they may just use the floor as the bin but i know i wouldn’t if it were me ... call the health inspectors ......

We have been drinking coffee here for years and have recently seen a deterioration cleanliness of the whole cafe area. In truth the toilet has never been pleasant and was always best avoided (but we have noticed that generally across most Costas we have been to around the country).

Visited at the weekend, extremely busy but great atmosphere and very lively and bubbly staff that are always ready to make sure tou enjoy your visit

Standard Costa menu but really friendly staff..male manager was lovely . Quick service,tables and loos were clean..no complaints at all .

Worth going to, the service is quick down sides are that sometimes the tables aren't cleaned and they get lazy

While staying in Carlisle went here a few times staff really nice and friendly coffee great as I always expect it to be at a costa and the cold drinks my family had always looked yummy

Saturday approx. 12 noon. 4 of us stopped for coffee. The queue was enormous, the place was a tip with bits on the floor and tables needed clearing. We got a table and it was sticky. Coffee was good. Staff too stretched.

Was nice to stay when waiting for the train it's close to the station has friendly staff and is nice in the sun.

I like going to Costa for the coffee is on the drinking chocolate Love when they shall catch your name out staff are very friendly and helpful and I just like to watch the window by the window and watch the world go around lots of people go past my coffee and it's a reasonable price and I have a loyalty card as well and as many cups you can have you get a free one so when I'm in Carlisle at some time to go to Costa

Visit Costa regularly and staff are alway polite and friendly. However on this occasion I was rudely shouted at my one of the maestro baristas. Didn't get his name but he had a foreign accent, not sure which. The shop was quite busy and the tables were full of dirty dishes. I begin to put them on a tray and take them to the counter, something I often do but this guy yelled at me " NO,LEAVE IT I WILL DO IT" Wish a hole had opened up and swallowed me, talk about being embarrassed. I was only trying to clear a table so we could sit down. Nevertheless I would still return as long as this mystery guy is not working alternately I would visit one of the other stores in town.

I last went to Costa coffee in June 2016, and I choose the all day breakfast sandwich and a medium iced fruit cooler.

This is a good Costas in the centre of carlisle. Its very small inside but has lots of seaats outside. Its nice to sit and watch what everyone else is doing. Lovely snacks

The location is great, right in the middle of the pedestrianised City centre. Always seems busy and understaffed. Coffee is good but expensive. Lovely place to sit and watch the World go by.

I'm pretty sure that most Costas are the same...fabulous coffee, though usually dangerously hot...but they always seem understaffed.

Toilets awful to start with. My husband went to the counter to order only to find they are trialling a system whereby you have a paper cup and your food in a bag! Good grief - could you make your business less appealing! It was virtually empty of course ...

Thought i'd pop upstairs above the bookshop as i prefer the quiter coffee shop over the busier costas under the town hall. My excellent coffee and good book experience was spoiled by the staff's hour long shouty conversation behind the counter (and i was sat behind the wall to the counter!!!) Given that they were stood no more than a few yards from each other, i'm sure they could've toned it down for the paying customers.

We called in here for a hot drink as it was very cold. There were only two staff and the place was full it took over 20 minutes to get served. Granted it was during the lunch time 0130pm but just two staff they could not keep up with the orders and collect from and clear the tables it was a dark and dingy and sad place to visit and my hot chocolate wasn't very warm it was a disappointing visit

The lone star is for the Black Forest Hot Chocolate. The rest of the visit...I wish we'd not bothered. I wonder if customer service is in the training suite at Costa; if it is, then this shop needs a block booking. Step one - smile; it's not hard.

Called with my wife for coffee last week and we couldn't believe how worn and dirty the place was, we couldn't help noticing the squaller behind the counter and the dirty cloth that one of the assistants was using to clean the steam pipe on the coffee machine. The whole place could do with a good clean, we won't be visiting again in the future.
