Important to check if they have a wedding booked and avoid the restaurant if they do. It took an hour and 45 minutes to have 2 courses ( main took 50 minutes to come after first course had been cleared). We asked for our bill as it came, and it came but no one came to take payment and we ended up having to walk around the hotel till we found someone we could pay. The beef ( roast of the day) was over cooked and utterly tasteless, tough and a uniform grey colour.

Stayed in the lodges for one night recently, loved it. Whilst it would have been nice to stay in the castle the lodges just looked amazing and they were. Hot tub, cows to chat with in the field next door, coffee machine, TV (to play Spotify through) breakfast brought to us in a hamper early in the morning. Luxury overall and just very peaceful. We had dinner in the castle restaurant and it was faultless, also had a couple of drinks in the bar. There was a wedding in the hotel but everyone was in a different part, surprisingly there was no noise from them unless a connecting door was opened. The staff were all amazing. Lovely quiet location, perfect to relax away from the grind. Peebles and Biggar are close by for a visit, Peebles being the better option. Highly recommended, we are going to book again, we were going to stay in the castle next time but I suspect we won't, the lodge was just too good!

My fiancée and I are booked for our wedding here in 2026. We have visited twice - once via appointment and then a follow up during one of Cornhill's wedding exhibitions. We viewed around 6 venues around central Scotland before we seen Cornhill. We were instantly taken by the castle and its surroundings. What set apart Cornhill as our venue of choice was the staff and the tour of the facilities. Their tour and all the little details far exceeded any other venue we seen. Our first visit was 11am on Saturday after they had hosted a wedding the night before. The bride from the previous night was still around with her family but the venue was already immaculate and we got to see the rooms - how they managed this is beyond me. It was Laura that showed us around and helped us with everything and her professionalism was unmatched. She blew away the staff at all the other venues we visited and a large part of our decision to book this venue for our most special day was how comfortable we felt putting our trust in Laura. She must make Cornhill a fortune. Looking forward to summer 2026 and staying 2 times between now and then (we're going to be staying overnight at their lodges on the date of our wedding day 2024 and 2025). Thank you, Jamie and Chloe

Wow!! One of the best meals we’ve had in a long time! Well done to the chef. We had an overnight in one of the beautiful lodges. Great experience. I had the ham hock terrine to start, my husband had the scallops. We shared. Both fantastic. We both had the chicken supreme for the main. Every morsel was delicious. Then to finish off we had the half baked cookie dough. Out of this world. Tremendous. The staff were so friendly. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

I stayed in the Spey lodge 6th & 7th January 2023. On arrival we were shown to the lodge by Megan. It looked nice. We had no towels for the hot tub so had to ring reception. We visited the Gillie restaurant & the menu is very basic. That night myself & husband tried to sleep in the lodge. 2 single beds pushed together with 2 single mattresses zipped together. We both fell into the middle of the bed, very uncomfortable! At a cost of £300 per night this is unacceptable. The shower would not drain & my husband had to clean the drain which was full of hair. This is basic maintenance! Again paying £300 per night this is not acceptable. Sunday morning, no cups to make a hot drink, basic housekeeping! I’ve been to Cornhill castle but I wouldn’t return. Nor would I recommend. Premium price for average service/amenities

Very disappointing - our 1st visit post lockdown and we booked for a family anniversary celebration. We had fond memories of the quality of food and ambience at Cornhill in the restaurant but alas despite the new decor the food & service did not match our expectations. Starters were tasty despite appearance which did not make them look particularly appetising. Had to ask for butter for roll and arrived when soup was nearly finished. Had to ask for cutlery to be replenished after starters as Main courses which were fine & had arrived but no knife replaced. Dessert was extremely poor. Huge portion of sticky toffee pudding 2 slices per person who ordered it but tasted very dry and not freshly made. Ice cream was ordered with chocolate sauce and had to then ask again for chocolate sauce and was told it would be out shortly. A very small portion then arrived with the explanation that it was the last sachet of sauce and at least it would give me a taste. When it arrived the ice cream was already melting. Chocolate sauce from a sachet ??? Very poor no apologies did not ask how things were or if we had enjoyed. There was a comment as most of the sticky toffee pudding had been left about the large portion size as though this might have been the reason. The chocolate sauce at Cornhilll used to be fabulous as was the service but today’s experience was very poor. It was very poor value for the experience - happy to pay for quality and service but this wasn’t received.

This was our second time staying at Cornill Castle and again, we were not disappointed. We had lunch in the bar prior to checking in and the food was lovely and the service very good. We then went to our room which was a large room with four poster bed overlooking the grounds. The bathroom was also large with free standing bath and separate shower. The room had everything you would need including toiletries, tea/coffee, iron and ironing board and fridge. We had no complaints at all about the room and the only issue we had with the hotel is the 11am check out. It is very popular for weddings and this is most probably the main reason behind the check out time to allow them to have the rooms ready for guests arriving. We opted to go out into Biggar for dinner and reception staff kindly arranged our taxi. On a good day, it would be a pleasant walk into Biggar which is around two miles away. Alternatively, you could also climb Tinto hill, which is also close to the hotel. Breakfast in the hotel was excellent! Local produce and cooked to order, the quality of the ingredients was clearly evident. Tea and coffee was served with toast prior to the arrival of the cooked breakfast and you could also enjoy cereals, fresh fruit and a variety of fruit juices. The hotel is lovely and despite the stormy weather and flurry of snow, we had a lovely time and will certainly return!

I am very sad to say I Went for a family Sunday lunch and was very disappointed with the whole experience. Serving staff were very pleasant but not consistent, we had glasses on the table for water but no water (other tables had water ). My child was given the child’s menu , which had colouring in pictures but no crayons provided like other restaurants do. After taking our order it took 1 hour and 40mins for our main to come , by this time my toddler was beyond restless. There was no plates for the chicken for 2 therefore more waiting was required for them to arrive . During our waiting no one came to our table to explain or apologise for the wait , we had to call to order another round of drinks while we continued to wait . The food was of a poor quality compared to previous years with saddens me. Cauliflower cheese sauce was too watery, roast potatoes not cooked long enough and not much of a portion, was left hungry. Yorkshire pudding was very nice. At dessert time, again this took a very long time before we could order our choices then a further long wait for it to come. Sticky toffee pudding is nothing like it used to be and did not taste home cooked it felt very processed however the ice cream was nice . Not once did any of the waiters came to ask if everything was ok during our meals although I did witness this at other tables . The restaurant it’s self was not extremely busy and there was empty tables . We went to the bar to pay and again no one asked if it was good etc , if I was asked I would have stated my disappointment. By this time our lunch had taken 3 hours for 2 courses and we were very much ready to leave. We have been regular customers to this venue for over 20 years but it has lost its character and reputation in the local community.

Three of us went for afternoon tea. The staff were very friendly and polite but seemed to lack training. Reception told us to go to to the restaurant but where was it? If they are not busy, escorting us there would making us feel much more special.Service was a little awkward and clumsy. Since the review saying the waiter should tell us what we are eating, well that hasn’t been fixed by the manager who replied to that comment. Service don’t routinely return to the table to make sure you don’t need anything else. The sandwiches were adequate, there could be more filling. A wrap was given which is not tradition for afternoon tea. There was no clotted cream it was regular cream which was WAY too sweet. I have a sweet tooth but could not eat it. The scones were unimpressive. The blancmange type thing looked beautiful but was tasteless, thickened something topped with runny jam. In view of the market being aimed at, for a first afternoon tea you might be quite happy but having been to numerous teas it was quite average.

Lovely setting with great facilities for wedding etc. Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Drink prices are a bit high but then again I found that was true of other places in the area. Only slight downer was the time it took to serve the meal. The food was great but the gaps between courses was a bit much. I realise at weddings when they have the speeches before the meal the time service will start is variable, but not unmanageable and no excuse for the gaps.

Booked this for a 14 person family group on the recommendation of my daughter who had had good experiences when she had dined there previously. The restaurant was not busy though there was a small wedding party present. Took a very long time to catch someones attention so that we could order pre lunch drinks in the bar, these also took quite some time to arrive. We were seated in a private room, which was good but again there were very long delays before we were able to order and before the food arrived. We ordered both red and white wine which arrived after the first course had been eaten. Though two wines were ordered there were one glass only per quest on the table and the wine handed over unopened for us to deal with. No additinal glasses were offered. The young staff were pleasant and apparently willing but I assume they and/or the kitchen were struggling to accommodate the wedding party, our group, and a small number of other quests at broadly the same time. The meal itself was average at best.

We arrived here very early (10 am) as we came from the 7am ferry in Aberdeen. They very kindly prioritised our superior queen room and got us in at 11:30 am. So far so good. We booked this room with half board including breakfast for £125. The room is gorgeous, so that is an incredible bargain. The room though has no AC and this was the end of June on a very warm day, so we had the window open. The room Inveraray (11) is located right above the kitchen. We could here kitchen staff gossiping, laughing and swearing right under our window. They would also use the dumpster which was noisy with a lot of glass breaking. The room is also located in the back, right beside the wedding tent. I’m writing this at about 5 pm from the room so have yet to experience what a nightmare this might turn out to be. So far our room door has either been opened or tried to been open when we locked it, about half a dozen times by wedding guests or staff. This has really annoyed us to the point that we had to stick a hand written DO NOT DISTURB sign outside the door (they don’t provide one). We seem to be surrounded by the wedding guests as we’re in the section with the nicest rooms. We ordered room service for lunch. I ordered a hamburger, my husband said the prime burger but apparently the receptionist thought he said plain because they sent us up a plain burger...literally a little burger between a bun with no sauce, no salad. It was also a pound more than what the price of a burger is listed on the lunch menu in addition to the room service charge. The description on the lunch menu stated it would be served with Monterey Jack cheese and onion chutney with slaw and chips. We got the chips but not the rest of it. However after another call and correcting things with the room service attendant we got all of the ingredients, though by that time the burger was cold. I’m giving it a very good overall because for £125 for a 2 course dinner, breakfast and a beautiful room its an incredible value and they did try and accommodate us and correct things that weren’t right. We haven’t tried dinner yet, hopefully that’s alright but beware of the other things that might be annoying as rude guests and cleaning staff checking rooms that they should have known have already been cleaned. The building is located in a very private and park like setting and is ideal for a wedding. Just beware if you’re not part of the wedding party as you’ll get all of the noise and hassle around you without any of the fun.

We decided to try somewhere local for Afternoon Tea. Sadly this was very disappointing. Granted it wasn’t particularly expensive but the tea was served in a dirty tea-pot ( with a sticky gravy type substance all over the spout) and the bread for the sandwiches and the scones all appeared to be stale, or otherwise had been left out for a long time so were very dry. The other cakes were also pretty bland so we left most of it. Additionally, we were not told what anything was when the cake stand arrived. Such a shame but we won’t be returning. The staff were friendly though. We should have probably voiced our opinion at the time but to be honest we just wanted to leave.

Wow, I have travelled far and stayed in some super locations but this goes to the top of my must return to list. My first introduction was attending a wedding on April 12th. Yesterday we booked in for dinner, bed and breakfast staying in an executive room names "Inveraray". From the moment we arrived we felt welcome and extremely comfortable. The grounds are outstanding with its own helipad, lush green pastures with the river Clyde meandering through. The room was exquisite with a fabulously comfortable extra super king sized bed, muted coloured accessories and fridge, safe, hair drier, iron and iron board. Tea and coffee making facilities. A table should you choose to dine privately and television should you wish to chill. Evening meal choice of cordon blue or standard, which believe me was anything but a "standard" meal. Three courses that I defy anyone not to love. The sticky toffee fudge sauce was to die for and my cocktail was made by a lovely young lady who seemed to smile continually throughout the evening. Breakfast was eaten whilst looking out over the grounds and listening to the Eagles ( gentle background music that is). My scrambled egg was accompanied by the most tasty smoked salmon I have had in any country. We were also surprised to return to our room to find a slate with fresh strawberries covered in white chocolate wishing me a Happy Birthday.

Purchased the Christmas residential package. The location of the venue was beautiful and the room accommodations were excellent, HOWEVER the food and service were exceptionally POOR and as a result I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone. What is amazing, this hotel promotes itself as a Wedding venue, if what we experienced over Christmas is what is presented at a wedding at this location, do not waste you money. Go somewhere else. Also at least three couples approached us, and we did not solicit their feedback, who by the way, were repeat customers and said they would NOT be returning due the same experience as ours. We were all shocked by the CHEAP quality and POORLY prepared food served to us AND the manner it was served.

Had Xmas dinner in this hotel with its unusual architecture. It was a big disappointment with slow service and full atmosphere

Would not recommend the Cornhill castle to anyone. Went for dinner for my mums birthday on arrival we were the only 3 people in the bar area yet it took 30 mins to be served our first drinks. We were then handed a set menu - as the a la carte menu had been taken off for that evening only, i was extremely disappointed as we were not advised that this would be the case when i booked the table earlier that day, we were then moved through to our table the waiter poured us all water to to my horror there was a fly floating around in my mums glass. when asked for it to be changed there was a less than satisfactory "sorry". The starters arrived - mine a frozen -prawn, prawn cocktail served in a brown lettuce leaf with a piece of stale white pan bread cut in half, a very small haggis, neeps & Tatties with a morsel of peppercorn sauce and the limpest chicken and bacon salad one has ever seen. One to the main courses my mum was slammed down a salmon dish and nearly lost a potato to the other side of the room, along side two roast beef dinners which had been cooked within an inch of their life again served with a morsel of gravy (i mean bisto granules and water). The sugar snap peas that were served alongside all 3 dishes were almost inedible due to the "stringy" bit left on them (i am sure they teach you to remove this in standard grade home economics). we did not stick around for dessert and when telling either the shift manager or manager that our visit was less than satisfactory there way hardly even an apology. Safe to say we will not be back here. If you are in the area and looking for somewhere decent to eat the Elphingstone Hotel in Biggar is always a winner. Such a shame for a lovely venue which used to be great back in the day when privately owned.

La location è semplicemente incantevole! Il castello fa la sua gran figura, ma il parco e il viale di ingresso sono veramente superbi!

Dinner was excellent, although I did pay the supplement for the steak which was cooked just as asked. The Chicken Satay starter was also perfectly sized. We had a cocktail in the nice lounge area. Both areas also had lovely views from large windows which were great to relax in.

I have been a regular guest at Cornhill House (or "Castle" as the new owners have it) for 18 years. For all that time I have loved both the homely quality of the rooms and the wonderful food...until tonight! It is with genuine sadness that I have to report the apparent death of a great hotel. The fact that there were dirty saucers and teaspoons left in the bedroom and a long hair left in the basin is very unfortunate in a hotel that has always been so pristine, but the real killer was the food! Eating here has always been a treat, but tonight I was served one of worst meals I've ever been offered in 30 years of business travel. The soup (curried lentil) was bland and earthy and the "steak pie" was an insult to the concept and the customer. It was a portion of dry beef stew served in a small dish with a dry square of cold puff pastry plonked on top. No gravy, tired veg and a cage of oven chips. I sent the meat back and just had the chips to assuage the hunger pangs. The waitress was pleasant, and I was assured the "pie" would be removed from the bill (not a great concession given it was so poor), but there was no comment or apology from the management. The Cornhill used to excel at everything, a real home-from-home...this new incarnation is heartbreaking.

Cornhill is a beautiful place to visit, however again we were let down by the food, it’s all beautifully presented but taste is not there, the fish was dry and mostly batter, chips frozen I think! Sticky toffee pudding was dry, tablet ice cream and toffee sauce delish!! Kids food was let down with the chicken goujons done in a pepper batter! However they did deduct this from the bill! Service was great. Cornhill used to be my favourite place to eat, not now however setting is fabulous. Please don’t let my review put you off, go and try for yourself.

Wonderful venue, with impeccable service and very very stylish and well appointed rooms. The setting is idyllic, peaceful and relaxing. No leisure facilities here but that isn't advertised so no issues there. The issue for me is the food. It's just largely bland and under seasoned. Gorgonzola linguine had no taste of strong blue cheese and was purely a cream sauce with frozen peas and small onions thrown into it. Almost as if made by a university student, although I feel a uni student would have a better ability to create a good cream sauce that had a bit of a punch. Very bland. Dessert was an improvement in some areas, the place does have a good toffee sauce. Breakfast was a fairly average Scottish breakfast. Although it at least had some flavour, a nice change after dinner. Scrambled eggs appeared to have been blast cooked in a microwave and this resulted in the eggs dropping all their moisture on the plate which was a fairly unpleasant watery soup which made the rest of the food soggy and inedible. Please get a new chef and this will be a fantastic hotel truly worthy of its 5 stars

We were a bit nervous about our lunch after reading so many poor reviews! So we were very pleased to enjoy a lovely relaxed lunch with very attentive staff. Nice choices on the menu and every member of our party remarked on the quality and taste of the food. Large hot portions and everyone cleared their plates which is a good sign. Absolutely no negative points and the whole afternoon was a success. Not sure if we were just lucky but we all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and the relaxing afternoon with friends.

Room ok but not great for the money. Breakfast poor. Not prepared for the number of guests. 1 young guy serving. Unable to keep up with demand. My poor husband had no cooked breakfast as buffet was empty and no time to wait.

Nice grounds/garden but the Easter Sunday carvery not good- food cold and poor quality. The front of the building looks nice but the back conservatory where the meal was had absolutely no atmosphere. It appears they’re going for numbers over quality. Nice friendly staff though.

me and my husband popped in at the weekend for Sunday Lunch and shouldnt have bothered. Set menu which was limited to say the least no fish on the menu fair enough its a lunch Menu, when our meal arrived to say we were disappointed was an understatement Tomato soup tasted like purried tinned tomatoes, chicken balmoral consisted of two chicken wings stuffed with haggis once you peeled the skin back there was virtually 2 forks of chicken if you were lucky, for what we were served it certainly didnt justify the price. Really disappointed because the Cornhill was one of the few restaurants that we could rely on for a good meal and we used to take our 4 kids often ,sadly we wont be back, I understand that new owners have taken over perhaps they should speak to their staff about how the Cornhill used to operate, the meal we were served wouldnt look out of place in a motorway services cafe not what we would expect from the Cornhill. Come on its not rocket science if the foods right and reasonably priced then we wouldnt have the misfortune of having to leave such a review raging doesnt even cover it

Just returned from the most delicious afternoon tea. Lots of savoury items with fillings such as smoked salmon and beef and red onion. Scones were warm and soon were covered in jam and cream! The selection of cakes was amazing, something to tempt everybody there! Lashings of tea to accompany this. What more can you want?

After a long week of travelling it was a pleasure to be greeted by the staff as we entered the Crown and took a seat by the fire as Grace and Anna immediately brought us our usual drinks, made a fuss of our dog and chatted with us before serving us the usual excellent food we have come to expect. It is so refreshing to be served by people who clearly enjoy their jobs and value your custom, highly recommended this place.
