Copper Ceylon in Colchester

Having been to this restaurant several times and really liking it I booked my husband’s birthday meal for 6 December 2 months ago at the end of Sept. I was dismayed to get a notification yesterday that my booking was cancelled. The only explanation I can fathom is that we were bumped off due to 2 large parties taking over the restaurant. The Manager did not offer us any recompense and kept on repeating himself that they were fully booked that night and could not honor my booking. I now have a very disappointed husband and son but I tell you one thing this restaurant has lost our business for good and I will be telling people I know in the local area how shocking the customer service is.

We visited at about 430 on a Saturday so maybe didn’t get a “normal” ambience, but when we were there it was lovely, nice soft jazz music playing, soft lighting and lots of plants. We loved it. However we loved the food more!! It was so delicious. The Sri Lankan daal was amazing, the devilled chicken was literally the best thing I’ve eaten in months. Everything we had was really really tasty. We usually go to the brilliant Sri Lankan restaurant in South Croydon but I think we will be coming back here as I can not fault it. Also the young Sr Lankan waitress was so friendly and helpful. We will be back

We were the first to arrive at 5pm on a Saturday evening. followed by many others. We were treated like kings and queen, menu explained in detail. We had wine and beer which were good. a little wait for the food but the staff did apologise. We had starers 2 mains and 4 sides nothing disappointed, it took us back to our visit to Sri Lanka. Can highly recommend. Thank you copper Ceylon.

Lovely ambience, let down by slow service and dry overcooked food. Young lady, front of house, did her best to placate the situation, nevertheless, a very disappointing experience. Eaten here before, it was very good, but really gone down hill. Won't be going back.

It was my first visit to this place. Ordered King fish curry, bread and rice. Curry was really bad - was actually close to return it back to Chef, as fish probably already passed it sell by date. The Owners of the restaurant if you are reading this review - REMEMBER you have only one chance to impress your new customers. Otherwise they will never be back !!! It's shame really - place is very nicely decorated and personal is polite and attentive.... Will stay away and choose different places in the future.

Food was bland with no flavour. This was our second visit but with a long break in between and menu has shrunk dramatically There was only one other couple there so had hoped as early evening food would be freshly cooked. Chicken Bryani was dry and tasteless and the roti chicken was almost entirely vegetables which were slimy and overcooked. Only two small pieces of chicken so certainly not value for money. And not a hint of spice anywhere! Won’t be returning. So disappointed.

Outstanding food and service. Incredibly impressed. A tad noisy but a good atmosphere all the same. Our hostess Lois went the extra mile for us and really made sure we had a great experience. The barman treat my husband to a complimentary cocktail as he showed great admiration for the combination. Definitely recommended.

Visited with family for dinner on a Saturday night expecting great food and service. The service was very abrupt and impersonal. The food was average at best. Our starters arrived within two minutes of ordering them which to us meant they had been prepped early and thrown in a microwave to heat up. The only saving grace were the mutton rolls. The crispy chicken was very dry and hard. The mains were again average with minimal meat content. We will sadly not be returning as the food does not do any justice to Sri Lankan cuisine.

We have just been with the wife to enjoy some cocktails on the happy hour, the cocktails and the bar staff service was great. However , it’s very disappointing that we had to pay full price for our signature cocktails as the happy hour offer apparently only includes classic cocktails. We were only made aware of it, when settling the bill. When we have pointed out that there are no signs that only Classic’s are included, Manager argued the information was clearly stated on the advertisement outside the bar, which is a lie. Advert outside, as well as in the toilets, is misleading so don’t be fooled. It’s a shame as we had high hopes for the place, management needs to step up their game or attend a customer service course.

I'm a huge fan of Sri lankan cuisine so very happy to have one in the local neighbourhood which really is authentic but has a high end feel. We visited yesterday and Xmas decorations were up, making it a cosy bur still ethnic vibe. The little rickshaw at the front with lights is a lovely touch. Service was great and I'd actually urge more customers to I saw just ordering things they are used to ordering like poppadoms thinking it's an Indian restaurant, when there'd a wonderful selection of short eats the staff happily will talk you through My top picks for starters and short eats are the Mutton rolls (you get 2...don't share! Ha!), the fish cutlets (though be warned they are spicy), the prawns and the Squid! My top picks for mains are the the mild prawn curry, the jaffna Mutton curry, and although a little messy, the crab curry is just top notch! Best eaten with parathas and savour rice! Will definitely be visiting again for my Sri lankan food fix soon.

Exceptionally good restaurant. Food was just superb, I would have changed nothing. What a pleasant surprise, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Knew this was an award winning resto so we visited. Better than average Indian, Southern / Keralan style cuisine, well spiced BUT....warm plates arrived 10 minutes before the food, so THAT was a pointless exercise. Suggest plates are put on table just before the food is delivered. ALSO waitstaff started clearing plates while one of us was still eating and continued to do so even when asked not to, then came back and started trying to wipe table while someone still eating. Seems to be lack of training and incomprehension of basic dining etiquette. Disappointing.

The service here was excellent. The food was tasty - just maybe check spice levels with your waiter if you are unsure! The portions weren’t huge for the price - we did feel it was a little on the pricey side. I would definitely recommend the ‘house cocktail’ - it was big enough for 2!

Went for lunch last week with a group of fellow Tamil Sri Lanka friends. We've heard about this place and wanted to go. The food didn't disppoint. Recommend the Jaffna fry platter, king prawn platter , the black pork curry and jaggery uppam. The one negative was the price of the mutton rolls, 2 for £6 is daylight robbery. Overall love the restaurant, love the look and the taste of the food. Quite authentic Tamil Sri Lankan cooking.

Meet up with Friends at Copper Ceylon. Service is reasonable , but it can be a little slow. We had drinks and just opted for Main Courses. Food tasted fantastic. Six people had a variety of dishes including Chicken Roti , Mutton Curry , Red Chicken Curry , Fish Curry , Tempered Cabbage , Coconut Sambal , Yellow Rice , String Hoppers and some other dishes. Food was tasty and spicy ( all plates were cleared ) , but it needed to be much hotter from a temperature perspective. As this is a Restaurant and Bar , it did not have a Restaurant ambiance or feel, which may not suit all tastes. However , four of the group of six persons present ( including myself ) opted to stay until near closing time ! All in all , a great evening was had by all and I will certainly return when in Bromley again.

We had take away for three.They seem don't try any more after winning CURRY OF THE YER.We ordered jafna currys because of bone morrow, but this time there was no bone morrow, somebody cut it out of meat.All we could taste is heat and no flavor.The same was dal-so hot, my daughter couldn't eat it.The free chatneys for roti were disgasting, although I liked coconut chatney, which was not free.Desert was all right, but very tiny piece .Waste of money.

Fantastic food and service. Waiter provided some great recommendations, especially for starters. Likewise recognised some of us from a previous visit so great service overall.

From the moment you walk in, your experience starts honestly ! Just came from having my leaving dinner with my ex work colleagues and we we're feeling somewhat underwhelmed, we needed that extra something that was going to top our night off and copper Ceylon did exactly that and then some. Lovely lady on the iPad catering to all types of music genres so that everyone was included and taken care of. We had drinks as we had eaten already and I'm was really impressed with the presentation and the taste! Oh gosh yes please I could do with another few honestly. I had a look and the food menu and did some searching for pictures of the food and I'll just say, we will definitely be back to try the food just so we can say we did it all.
