Way to the Raj in Colchester

We visited here whilst staying locally. The restaurant is off a busy main road but there is parking outside. We visited on a Sunday evening and were the only table for a while. Inside the restaurant is comfortable and clean although it was so quiet we felt a little uncomfortable at first. Staff were polite and we were served within a reasonable time after ordering. The poppadoms were crisp and dry but disappointingly the sauces were thin and tasteless obviously mass produced. Having said that the rest of the meal was delicious. Tasty main dishes accompanied by garlic naan and rice. The meat was tender and we also enjoyed the vegetable dish too. I would eat here again if in the area but would choose a different starter.

We have been coming here for about 30 years. The food has always been good, but the food this time was just fantastic. The restaurant was quiet, but there was a fair bit of takeaways being done. The food wasn’t just fantastic, it was perfect. We had the Shatkora Lamb, Chicken Num Num, Brinjil Bhajee, Tarka Dahl, and Veg rice. The Lamb was really tender, the sauce sublime. A little like a Xacuti. We had the Num Num warmed up to a Madras heat, a delicate but very tasty sort of Butter Chicken. The Brinjal was perfectly cooked and well balanced. The Tarka we asked to be thick, and again was perfect. The rice was also good. Served on nice hot plates. Friendly attentive staff. The quality and quantity of meat was very good, all portion sizes were ample and not “padded out” with lots of onions. It is a shame we don’t live closer as we would frequent the Raj more often. I think the food here is better than the Spice at Elmstead, and better than all the other Curry restaurants we use in the Colchester area. Well done Raj, keep up the good work. We shall return soon.

Food is OK but nothing special ,have dined there and had take outs over several years ,handy but not special .

Top indian restaurant or take away. Best in the area. Very modern comfortable place to eat or a great take away. Portion sizes are more than adequate.

Great meal & prompt service. The best peshwari naan I’ve ever tasted. Also helped my wife choose a gluten free option. Would visit again.

Went to place an order this afternoon as was allowed to order and website says open, placed my order they took my money and got an email to collect in half hour, went to collect and there shut....rang the mobile number on the website and was advised that there shut till 5 and I can get my food at 5pm?.....Now have to wait 2-5 days to get my money back, and no suggestion of a gesture of good will

Had a lovely meal in here, brilliant service. Was here as a couple food was delicious and flavoursome. This was our first time visiting and we will be visiting more frequently. Thank you

We decided to try a takeaway from here for the first time as the restaurant rated well on Trip Advisor, Google and Facebook, unfortunately this was not the case. I wouldn’t usually post a negative review but the service was so bad on this occasion.When I called I was advised a takeaway would be 45 mins for delivery. After an hour I called to ask when we could expect our food and I was advised it would be 10 mins. Half an hour later I called again and was advised the driver had already left, after which they hung up the phone immediately. Our food arrived after 2 hours and it was luke warm. After our experience we will not be using this restaurant again.

Naga curry was very hot - just as i like it, but still full of flavour. Very attentive service. Highly recommend.

A quick stop at Way to the Raj on our way back from the airport as we were both hungry. We've used this restaurant many times for take aways and whilst I wouldn't say the food was anything special, it was never poor either. On this occasion though, my wife's Sag Paneer had 2 pieces of paneer in it, and the dish was so salty she couldn't eat it. My Lamb Bhoona was also very runny, the meat looked rather dodgy, and it lacked any flavour at all. If we lived closer we would have returned it!

We ordered a pick up from here on a Friday night on the way home........i ordered a madras and pillau rice with peshwari naan and my wife had a lamb sheek kebab. Well in my opinion this food was very bland no flavour....portion are good but no taste at all....only the peshwari naan had any flavour that was nice .....the services was not good ....on arrival staff was off hand and not very welcoming they basically though the food at me no eye contact no thank you for coming....not a good first experience for me unfortunately

Ordered a home delivery, we were told 45 mins but it was more like an hour and 10 mins . I understand they were busy which is fine except the food was luke warm so we had to put it in the oven for 10 - 15 mins to heat up and when we got to eat it the food had absolutely no flavour! We have eaten in the restaurant before and could not fault it but the delivery we got was no where near the quality that we have come to know from here , very disappointed and would not look to order from here again. In fact I would have to say that supermarket curries have more flavour.

A family weekend away in the area and we booked a table for eleven at short notice. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. We had a selection of starters , seafood platter, samosas and chicken , all of which were delicious but the star dishes of the meal were the sizzling dishes.The food was excellent and not overpriced

This is my local curry house, & I’ve got to say I’m never disappointed. I use it every month & they have a nice range of chef specials to the “normal” dishes you’d expect. The staff are always friendly & welcoming, & I’m happy to bring my friends here to eat in, or use as a regular take away. Well worth a visit, & the Sunday buffet is good value for money too.

An abhorrent service by this restaurant. Had to wait 1 hour for food, not once was we told sorry or informed of the length of wait. Staff would not apologise for sub standard service. Food was about 5 out of 10 when it arrived. They knocked off the price of 1 drink as a token gesture after I threatened to walk out before my food arrived. Do not eat here unless you are dying of starvation, in a desperate state of affairs and lack any real standards in anything that you do. I told the staff I would write a negative review, I am not a bitter individual, most of my reviews on trip advisor are positive. The worst part of this experience was that they refused to say sorry.Don't eat here!

The waiter seemed uninterested in being helpful and the Sunday menu was about average. It sermed very dim. Water came with no ice, on such a hot day that should have been a must.

Just came here for the Sunday buffet and was not Disappointed! Reasonably priced Lovely food , lots of choice, relaxed atmosphere and very friendly polite service will defiantly come again!!! Highly Recommended

Visited this evening, not the first time but haven’t been for a while. Very warm welcome and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Staff very attentive, food very very good quality & value for money.

As a group of professional guys that just happen to like curries. We meet up once a month to catch up after a busy period. This month we had decided to go to Way to the Raj. We wrote to the restaurant as always to ensure we would be welcomed as a group. The response from the restaurant was ‘Ofcourse come and enjoy’

Been here many times, food of good quality, service normally good If you want to die, ask for a taste of a raw naga chilly!

Such a nice beef rogan josh , ample sized portion with plenty of flavour that really tickle s my tastebuds , service from staff was perfect throughout the service such a wicked meal hopefully will visit again soon

This is the third time of eating here. We usually visit when my parents come down to visit but tonight visited as a couple for my partners birthday. The food and service was top class as always. When they heard it was my partners birthday they bought him out a desert free of charge and even put a candle in it! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a good quality, well priced meal with friendly service! Will will certainly be back soon!

Lovely fresh salad and the best onion bhajis I have ever tasted. Lots of variety in the strength of curries and seemed to be good vegetarian options. Been twice now within a month! Very reasonable too and friendly service

I’ve heard about how good the food is here, so whilst passing my husband and I stopped and placed and order. We then sat and waited in their lovely AC restaurant whilst it was being made.

Me and my partner went to the Sunday buffet , Their wasn't a large choice of food but enough to fill our plates, the atmosphere was lovely just perfect if you want to have quality time with family and friends, The staff friendly and polite, I would highly recommend this place to anyone, Will be defiantly coming back here again.

Have been visiting this little gem for a number of years now. Staff are always very friendly and accommodating. Meals are always wonderful. When the restaurant is full, the service is a bit slow however the meals are always very well prepared.

We waited over 1 hour for the food to be served ... the kitchen struggled to deliver when the restaurant was full. When it arrived, the food was OK but not great. A disappointing meal considering the restaurant has received good reviews. We will not return.

I visited this restaurant with a colleague early on a mid-week evening. Does not look great from the outside, but that is a bit misleading. The set-up is functional, but clean. Service was ok, food was excellent. My advice would be. . don't be put off by the exterior.

I have only ever visited this place on a Sunday, presumably the chefs day off, when they do a serve-yourself buffet made up of leftovers from the weekend evenings. The food is actually very good, and not surprisingly attracts a loyal customer base (mostly fat people). The buffet is 10.95 a head and you can get a bottle of house wine for 15 quid. There is usually a choice of about 6 different (but not very different!) curries as well as the usual accompaniments and sundries. No doubt I will be back again.

we were here for just over two hours for two courses, poppadoms and drinks arrived quickly but starters took an hour, and mains a further half an hour

1st time visit for me and I wont be going back, service was so painfully slow and they were only serving about 20 people, Dips were tasteless and the curry itself was luke warm and chicken not that well cooked, decor was quite nice but overall a very disappointing experience and one I wont be making again.

The 4 star rating is because the food when we finally got it was very nice. However, having been told our takeaway would be ready for 7:30pm when they clearly had some backlog issues in the kitchen and sitting around until just after 8:00pm before...

Been here a couple of times now, the service is excellent with good menu selection which hasn't disappointed and we've tried different things each time. We'll be back.

We were stuck in traffic so decided to visit this restaurant which was 50 yards from where we were stuck.The restaurant had a pleasant decor - contemporary (however I did have a death spider handing off the window by me).The toilets were clean and tidy.We ordered the Samon Tikka for starters which looked nice (but was slightly overcooked). The mixed grill was nice (small portion).The mains took a long time to arrive. The table next to ours ordered mains after us and got their food before us (in the resturants defend we also ordered starters). For mains we had Chicken Birayani and Vegi Birayani. We asked for the Vegi to be spicy and the Chicken one to be mild but this seemed to come out the other way around. Therefore we had to order yoghurt for the children. The lamb Bhuna was nice and spicy as ordered. The naan was not as hot and fresh as I had expected. The Channa Masala and Tarka Daal lacked favour and spice.Overall this is a nice restaurant - a bit overpriced for what you get (not a fine fining experience) we have a number of better more reasonably priced restaurants to choice from in London. The meat dishes were nice but vegi dishes required some work. I would not recommend this restaurant to a vegetarian.

Don't be put off by the functional exterior of this place. Inside it is small but well decorated in a modern style, and there is plenty of space for the steady stream of customers. The menu has some interesting alternatives, so I had a tandoori salmon steak to start and a curried lamb shank as my main course. The red wine was not good, but I don't suppose they serve much so it may have been waiting in the bottle a long time. The service was efficient and attentive. What made the meal was the conversation with the manager at the end. He noticed we were first time visitors and made a point of checking us out. He asked why we had chosen his restaurant, where we usually had a curry, and what was different from our usual place. He seemed genuinely interested in our answers, and is looking for feedback so that he can improve. I would certainly choose this restaurant again next time we want a curry.

Myself and 3 friends from the WAFER (Wife Approved Friends Eating Rabble) aren't here recently and had amazing meals. Food was unbelievable tasty, full of flavour and the balance between flavour and spice was superb. The staff were really friendly and made you feel at home.I've been to a few curry houses in Colchester and this is by far the best.Can't wait to go back.

We've been going to the restaurant and getting takeaways from here for a few years and we've never been disappointed. The curries are always really tasty. Lately we've really been enjoying the biryani as they serve it with a taka dall and not your typical veg curry, which we find much more interesting. The restaurant itself had a face lift recently and is very inviting, while the manager is always friendly and chatty. We've never had an issue with the restaurant - waiting times, dishes, drinks etc. We get takeaways too although don't usually use the delivery service as we don't live too far away, but when we have it is as you would expect. We always recommend it to our friends as all the dishes are well cooked and tasty. Give it a go!

We ordered meals for eight people on Easter Monday, expecting possible delays for a large order to be delivered to us in Coggeshall. We were pleasantly surprised, the delivery was prompt, and the food was excellent. Overall, could not fault it on the quality of the food, the price, or the speed of delivery. Will definately use them again.

4 of us come here every 3 months as old colleagues. Food is consistently very good, although the bottled beer could sometimes be a bit colder.

For the second time in about six weeks we have had a poor takeaway meal at this restaurant. After the first time we provided constructive feedback on a sub-par meal. We were given a partial credit however when we went to use it on our next visit we were told we would not receive the discount normally offered with a takeaway. In essence we would pay the same as having no credit!Giving the benefit of the doubt we tried again last Friday and the food was worse, much worse. The chicken tandoori starter was raw inside and the red chilli lamb consisted of a thick sludge with about five pieces of chewy lamb hidden in it, topped off with an oily slick. Awful. An email to the manager laying out this complaint went unanswered. One votes with one's feet.

My son and I visited this restaurant on the way home to Portsmouth after the Colchester United v Portsmouth League 2 match. We had decided to use this restaurant rather than one in Colchester town centre as we thought parking would be easier, and it would not be as busy as a town centre restaurant. Well, having got there about 5.45pm, we were right about the parking - very easy - but the place was the busiest, in terms of taking takeaway orders over the phone, that I've ever been to.The solitary waiter was on the phone taking an order when we arrived, then after showing us to a table, proceeded to take another handful of calls over the next 20 minutes or so.Clearly, a popular venue for Saturday night takeaways but not so for "sit in" diners, as we found.The overworked waiter eventually managed to take our drinks order, but we then had to wait some time - due to the telephone being so busy - before he was joined by a colleague who took our food order. Anyway, despite all that, when it eventually turned up, the food was very nice and very filling. Overall a little disgruntled at the over-long wait, but more than happy with the quality of the food.

Had the buffet here with friends in February,whilst the food was good the amount on offer was not.We went to the buffet and there was no tandoori chicken,no naan bread,and only 1 onion bharji left,pointed this out to the waiter who looked and me and smiled,these items were not replaced until we had nearly finished our meal.Also they have changed the offer,salad and poppadums are no longer included,they can be bought as a seperate item though.It was a pity as our friends did like the food that was there,but were not impressed that the above items were not replaced sooner,still pretty good value for £10.95 each.

Been eating at this restaurant for years, popped in today for the Sunday buffet and it blew us away fresh hot food as to be expected if you go during the week please try the Archari chicken it's amazing.

We had been recommended to go to this Curry house by many people over the years, but always shrugged it off as the place doesn't really scream out to you because of the animals food suppliers linked to the building. We eventually decided to give it a go and wow!It was as if over the years of going place to place we had got used to an average kind of Curry, but not with this place. The depth of flavors in my chicken dahnsak was amazing. Really awakening the taste buds. Only problem is that now we can't go anywhere else. We have been back many times over the last 12 months and it's always been perfect.Well done guys, keep up the good work.

My wife and I and a friend stopped here for a curry on the way home from Coggeshall without booking on a Sunday evening. It was our second visit to this place. We received a warm welcome and decided to go for the Sunday Buffet. This was excellent with a variety of Indian dishes ranging from mild to moderately hot and pillau rice. All in all it was a very pleasant dining experience and we were able to eat shortly after arriving which was good because we were hungry. The bill came to £48 including the tip. Strongly recommended.

We were looking for somewhere to eat on the way home from Southwold and as all the pubs seemed to be full, we decided to look for an Indian restaurant and came across this place. Around 6-30pm so was reasonably quiet. The 4 of us easily got a table. We all thought the food was good but the service could have been a lot better. The waiters were very slow in coming to take our orders and waited a while for our drinks. The likelihood of us coming past there again is remote and wouldn't know if I'd eat there again.

Really pleased we stopped in here doesn't look like much but the food and service are amazing at a reasonable cost.. worth a trip

We used to visit this restaurant since 2002 it used to be good. Today we have been asked to wait 5 minutes outside. The prices gone up it is now more expensive than any other restaurants. The quality is dropped and the quantity is reduced and the asked to charge us 1.95 pounds to take the rest of the food home. It was written on the menu in the very fine print down where you cant see it. we left the food and left unhappy.

Went with my daughter, wife and my wifes friends. Was not family friendly and my wife felt very uncomfortable. We ended up going early with the food taken with to eat at home. Will hopefully be more family friendly in future

Stopped off at this resturant on the way home from work to get a curry takeaway. Ordered the food and had to wait for about 35 minutes in that time I should of thought it was a rubbish resturant as there just 1 old man waiting but there was no one in there eating no one coming in to order and only had 1 person phoning up for a order. When the food finally came out. I left got home opened the food up to dish out the chips were cold and soggy, the poppadoms were discuiting and very greasy so couldn't eat them. I ordered chicken tikka and got something else. Phoned the man up that I ordered from and he is so bloody rude he refers people as He and She terrible service. I would never ever eat here again and advise other people not too go somewhere better.

Although in a very small setting, the Raj isn't lacking in substance. The food and service are excellent. Reasonably priced food and drinks. Been there three times now on Friday and Saturday nights and not a hint of drunken stag nights or the other kind of flotsam and jetsam that tend to gravitate towards a late night curry. Great food, great service and will be frequenting again and again. Highly recommend. Well done lads.

Although a small, quiet restaurant - the atmosphere was very relaxing and we all felt very comfortable resulting in a wonderful meal together. The food was excellent and our waiter looked after us throughout making sure every need was met. Would recommend.

Writing a review after our second visit to the restaurant. Don't be put off by the exterior if you've only ever driven past, the food is wonderful! While it's true that the waiting staff aren't a match for the food, this is easily overlooked. Will be back!

Fantastic. We arrived at short notice with 11 hungry men. (Not the same as 12 angry men). The staff were on he ball and we got great food to the right people at the same time. Brilliant

Food is wonderful. Naan bread was not so good. Four of us and we all loved the food. Wife had shoulder of lamb and said it was the best ever. Two other curries were wonderful. Mixed tandoori grill was one of the best I have ever had. Wine list is very simple but very well thought out. The Tierra Alta South American red was very good and kept well. Parking is a cinch. Open every day of the week. The only draw back is one of the waiters that served us had to tell us that they did not have the scallops that two of us had ordered, so we both decided to have the calamares instead.His English was not very good. One starter turned up, not two. Could not be bothered to slow down the others, so let it be. Checked bill at end and only one of the two starters were charged. Otherwise perfect. Will go again, the sooner the better. Will try their Sunday Banquet next time, looks good value at just under £11 for an adult. Was a very late lunch arrived around 15.30 and was having fun there for nearly two hours. Slow eating and much talk about the amazing quality of the food and the beautiful tastes. Much sharing of platters and chinking of glasses. Weather iffy but a great day after all. Loved the onion bhajis. All generous rations. Left large tip.

Visited for a Sunday buffet,onion bhajis,nan bread pieces and chicken tikka on the bone were the only starters,5 curries and Bombay potatoes,v small salad and popodoms,no draught Indian beer only cobra available.

my self and the wife have eaten here on 6 occasions once on a Saturday and 5 buffets the buffet is second to none a good choice of curry's and meats and breads and rice would recommend reasonable prices £10 for a buffet staff are friendly

This is our favourite Indian. We go regularly and have never been disappointed. The food is excellent and the service is attentive, without being ott.

Went there for a Sunday buffet to celebrate Mother's Day. This is a very small place do it's only expected that it is very cramp and you do see very close together to the next tables.The food is the normal Sunday buffet combination of onion bahjee and tikka with a choice of 4 curries and vegetable one and popadoms.The re-filling if food is very slow and because it's so small, the queue becomes rather long as everyone appears to be looking at when the refill arrives and moved in.The service is just about there but to be fair, it is a buffet and the curries tasted ok.

This is a small and personable restaurant. There are only a few tables and it gives a different dining experience to a large busy restaurant. We have found the food to be served quickly and always hot and tasty. The menu is varied and has everything you would expect from a larger restaurant. The food tastes fresher and lighter than some oily heavy indian food we have experienced elsewhere. The prices are reasonable and it all adds up to a top indian dining experience in our opinion, just perfect for a quiet and enjoyable night out. We also experienced a free new dish when we were there which was very nice!

Are here a few years ago and the food was mediocre, however about a year ago it changed hands and now delivers locally. Thought I would try it again and collected a takeaway. Sorry to say it was no better. Onion bhajis were so stodgy, lamb shank beautifully tender but the flavour was nothing to write home about. Mushroom rice really greasy. Unfortunately there are a few fantastic Indian restaurants nearby so I won't be going back.

The food is always great , the food is so fresh , with a great friendly service as always , a great place to eat and great place to socialise and to relax in a great atmosphere created by the staff.

Just had an outstanding lunch at the Raj. Our party of 7 did not have a reservation and we had a 1 year old with us but the guys accommodated us and made us feel very welcome.All the food was fresh and delicious, this was the verdict of everyone in our party, not just me.It was one of the nicest dining out experiences I have had - wonderful food and the friendliest, most helpful staff you could wish for..,..Get yourself down there and enjoy it for yourself!

Excellent buffet. Excellent staff SAM. Excellent atmosphere, so friendly. Have tried other buffets but always come back to Way to the Raj. Have held two parties here, couldn't have asked for a better service. A must to be visited .

Its was a fantastic dinner I'd with my friends and family in colchester, been to other restaurant around but this one is just PERFECT. Try the lamb shank you will love it. I do recommend.

Had another meal in this place. The service was very good and all of the staff friendly. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. A great treat!
