Was spending a few nights at Ely whilst visiting Lakenheath and mildenhall. Must say this was a great pub and will definitely be visiting here again on my next trip to the area. Brilliant drink choice, nice music and atmosphere and friendly staff.

I went with a group over the weekend. . The music was good but the customer service was the worst I have ever experienced! To be charged over £40 for 6 pints to have them thrown away because you leave them on the bar for 2 minutes whilst you’re dancing (right next to the bar I might add). I approached the bar member who I believe was called Holly, to be met with a barrage of abuse/ if I had been spoken to in a polite manner I would have accepted it. Although I would have been annoyed - but the fact I was sworn and shouted at is completely unacceptable! I just think that if someone is spending money to pay wages - they at least deserve a bit of respect! I used to love coming here but this has honestly put me off. An apology would have been enough but to pay £40 for a mouthful of abuse is completely unacceptable!

Me and two colleagues went into the townhouse last night for drinks after a busy day/night at work. We brought 2 pints each and some shots totalling to £47. After making the purchase we went to the toilet on return a girl behind the bar was pouring them into the sink. I explained that they were our drinks, her reaction was to start shouting and swearing at me. Then just took the other drinks and poured them all away. I have never been treated in such a rude and disgusting way. If I could give it 0 stars I would. Will not be stepping into that place again.

Went in for a quick early evening drink b4 making our way to the maltings for noasis (the reason for our visit to Ely) we found the staff, landlord and landlady so very friendly and welcoming. We decided to go back after the gig and partied till the early hours! Fantastic night, good mix of music (although sadly missed the band) and brilliant atmosphere. Thanks for a great night guys we will return if our travels from Ipswich brings us back to Ely 🙂

Typical town centre pub with beer garden. Very good real ale, which is great value during happy hour(s)! Toilets could do with a refresh (and soap), but have experienced much worse. Staff were friendly, as were other folks in there with us.

Well since changing ownership I can only say from personal experience that this pub has sadly gone massively downhill. They unfortunately do not care about the safety of their customers, they employ shady, very weird (pervy) members of door staff, after being addressed with several incidents that happened in the venue the people who dealt with the situation did it absolutely appallingly, mocking a terrible situation and being incredibly rude. I wouldn’t recommend coming to them if anything unfortunately happens to you in the venue (it probably will as it’s very rough) because you’ll just get a rude response from the owner who can’t seem to grasp empathy or any inch of customer service! Highly recommend the Isle of Ely, staff and management are absolutely lovely. :)

Old bloke won’t let anyone in that looks under 30 and will not accept any form of ID. I am 21 years old and have never had my ID studied as intensely as it was here. In the end we were turned away as he could not decide if our ID was real or not. Met with very bad language and poor customer service. Poor pints on tap anyway so probably a blessing in disguise.

Live music on a Sunday. Great beer and a proper pub atmosphere. I've always drunk here and I hope I always will. My local is the best. Understanding bar staff, punk and a supply of plastic bags when you need them. Extraneous needs coped with. My daughter always feels safe. That's important.

Personally my experience was a banger, drinks mixed nicely and pints poured the way they should be, handled well by welcoming staff. Me, my girlfriend, her sister and colleague were all sat comfortably at a table close to the bar, the music set the mood as we had our beverages. Top knotch

Complete lack of professionalism on door staffs part on Saturday 11th September, fight broke out spilling into the street and door staff stood and watched. Numerous cars on the street were bumped into and when challenged on their lack of intervention the response was "we're not responsible for anything that happens outside" members of the public asked them to intervene and door staff not only refused to comment but wouldn't even acknowledge they were being spoken to, when asked what company they worked for they refused to answer. On top of everything else door staff allowed people to spill out into the roads with drinks in hand and drink and smoke in the middle of the road. Would leave a zero star if possible.

I can only comment as a night-time venue as I've been here twice and both times were nights out. In that regard, it is horrific! The venue isn't really the problem, it's the people that go there.Being about the only place open after 11:30pm means it is absolutely bursting with obnoxious drunks looking for anywhere that will still serve them alcohol. The main room, where the bar is located and through which you must venture to get anywhere else is a gauntlet of spilled drinks, angry drunk men and stumbling women but worse is just how full the place is. It is shoulder to shoulder and the atmosphere is sweaty and bad-tempered. The music is that special kind of loud where it's trying to compete with all the shouting which in turn is trying to compete with IT. Having the bar literally next to the DJ makes ordering drink a complete farce, I really felt for the staff. The toilets are at the far end of the main room, getting to them is a herculean task and when you manage it, it isn't pretty. If you find yourself in Ely at midnight and in need of somewhere to drink, I'd strongly advise you avoid this place. Go home and re-evaluate your priorities instead.

No longer a pub since 2021. The Lazy Otter Pub is however still famous in Cambridgeshire for its riverside location and for its bad meals and service. It was sold as it was making a loss due to serious mismanagement, awful quality food, staff that were not interested in delivering a decent service and who were totally untrained, its dirty and unhealthy facilities, and last but not least the lack of customers as a result of all the above and its unfortunate location. Access to the A10 was far too dangerous for pub goers and as a riverside pub the Lazy Otter failed as it only had two moorings, Restoring a bad reputation is one thing but increased traffic on the A10 cannot be controlled. The latter may be the reason why the pub is no longer a pub. On a beautiful summer's day, the Lazy Otter could, as a pub, have 150-200 people in the garden. Imagine these numbers trying to get onto the A10 T-junction. For safety reasons only, the Lazy Otter should never be a pub again.
