Compo's Take Away and Family Restaurant in Kirklees

After a bracing walk around part of Digley Dam this was an ideal stop off to satisfy healthy appetites. It wasn't particularly busy so my friend and I were fortunate to select a table by the window to sample views of the surrounding countryside that the area is famous for. We both chose the regular Fish & Chips, good value at £12 though smaller portions are available at £9.50. My friend's Side Salad cost £4 which I thought expensive for what he received while a side order of Mushy Peas set him back £2. I thought the drinks were expensively priced, £2.90.for a pint of Fanta Orange but we'd visited for the Fish & Chips and these were delicious so it was definitely worth the effort. The menu is quite extensive so there are plenty of alternatives to satisfy most appetites and palates. A good experience.

My first visit we got a warm welcome from Lottie and a table with a beautiful view of the lovely countryside……. However it has to be the worst tasting fish and chips EVER. Pale chips with no flavour and undercooked soggy batter. The fish had a chemical smell and I had to leave it. Mushy peas were tasteless and unseasoned. I was so disappointed as the prices on the menu are extortionate ! What a shame - hoping this review will be accepted as constructive criticism as improvement is essential !

The waitress Lottie was lovely.So friendly and smiling what a lovely girl. The meal was superb small fish and chips 2 for 1 is great value. What a view too..

I'll start on a negative. Scruffy staff, dilapidated restaurant. Tables all over, unkempt & full of kids with no audience connection. Menu was extremely expensive 😩 and the prices of certain items was quite frankly appalling. I'm sure this place makes money , but I'll never go back. Huge disappointment. The Large haddock was £15 and was just a normal fish. Cans of pop £3. Breadcake £1.75... no thx 😮‍💨 Plus ➕️ ➕️ points. Chips are the best I've ever tasted. Fish was excellent but small. Curry sauce was excellent as well. Small details about the rest will not make me go again. Overall 7/10 Prices are mind blowing 🤯

The fish and chips are usually ok we've been many times,but on this occasion they weren't that good. Firstly the food was cold and the fish shrunk to half the size we usually get. I ordered bread and BUTTER and the bread had margarine on. The fish and chips were cold because they were served and left for minutes before they brought them to our table due to talking . The staff are lovely polite and helpful but take customers food soon has it's served. It's such a shame we won't be returning there's lots of fish and chip restaurants to go to so we will for hot food.

Utter rubbish The server hadn't washed her apron for months she was rude ,uninterested and looked really grubby Bought 2 fish and chips to eat outside the fish was small inside a lot of greasy batter and the chips were soft full of grease and under cooked All this for over £20 complete rip off

We decided to try Compo's again as we hadn't been there for a very long time. If we had looked at the reviews we probably have given it a miss. Glad we didn't, we found it really good. Young lady who served us was pleasant and efficient. We had a small haddock and chips and it is two for one at £9.50 and it was freshly cooked with crispy batter and plenty of chips. 2 slices of bread is £1 and plenty of sachets of tartare sauce. Unbelievable price for the portion we had. My Yorkshire born OH is pretty picky when it comes to fish and chips but he thought they were as good as they could be since they had stopped cooking in dripping! We will definitely return as we had a very enjoyable meal with fantastic views.

Probably the worst meal I’ve ever had- been coming for takeaway for years always great but the last 12 months the food has got gradually worse last weekend extremely thin fish greasy batter and like someone else mentioned skin left on chips , full of black eyes left in and completely inedible- I really wouldn’t bother

We’ve been coming here for years and always enjoyed the food but unfortunately this will be our last. The food we received this time was horrendous, the chips were greasy and soggy and also had the skin left on them,when on earth does chips from a chippy have the skin left on? We ended up putting most of the food in the bin and at a cost of £30 for 3 people it’s not value for money either.

We have been several times and the food is good, service always pleasant. However today having enjoyed and paid for our meal we noticed we had been charged £2.50 for the glass of tap water my mother requested. No one likes to be had, so won’t be going again.

2 regular fish n chips and a small fish n chips. The regular fish was the same size as the small. Only difference was a few extra chips. The fish wasn't that hot. The staff were so rude. The counter was filthy not been wiped down for ages. I won't be recommending this place again.

Terrible food. Even worse customer service. Teenager on the front didn’t even acknowledge us. Fryer looked at us like s**t. Awful staff attitude, clearly couldn’t be bothered, and angry we’d disrupted their mobile phone time. Witnessed another customer treated this way. Terrible fish and chips; greasy, small portions. Living off the ‘Compo’s’ name. They’re a disgrace to this name and Holmfirth! Go to Hollowgate Fish and Chips instead, 10x better, and right in the centre of beautiful Holmfirth.

Absolutely appalling food, overpriced and almost inedible, will certainly not go there again, disgusting. Chips were cold, pastry on pie almost Impossible to cut in too. Dreadful!

well firstly it's a FnC restaurant, so the fish and chips themselves were fantastic, among the best I've tasted in living memory. The restaurant was very light and airy and is quite modern with nicely spaced tables, and many windows to best present the views and scenery of Holmfirth, the chippy is well located. Our waitress Lottie was very welcoming and friendly and gave good advice on menu options, plus had good local knowledge.

We were pleased to see the restaurant was open as we passed it the other day, so in we went. Met with an empty restaurant and eventually a waitress appeared ready to take an order of fish and chips and mushy peas. The food was awful. The fish was thin and overcooked, the chips were greasy and the mushy peas were like weak pea soup. Quite simply the worst we have ever had anywhere. Compos used to serve the best fish and chips in town…….not any more After all the terrible reviews why do they continue??

Service was shocking. It was so slow. The beans were cold. The chips were awful. Staff were rude and ignorant. Had to get our own knifes and forks it was expensive. Do not go hear..

I ordered a jumbo cod but what I received was cooked in oil too hot so the batter was overcooked. The fish was not jumbo The chips were like off cuts and a small portion.

My husband and I visited Holmfirth to see the graves of Compo and Cleg from Last of the Summer Wine and came upon the restaurant as we were leaving. The fish and chips were the hottest, freshest and best we have tasted in a long time and the young lady who served us was extremely pleasant, friendly and efficient. Thankyou .

Was on my way home and called in for fish and chips to eat on the moors on our way back they were very very poor and we threw them away and for £16.40 for two lots of fish and chips was poor would not recommend

Went with my family and sat inside as the last time we visited was pre covid. We were really looking forward to it. The staff who served us were really pleasant and served us really quick. But the food wasn't as good as it used to be, the chips were really hard and didn't seem fresh, we went just after they had opened so I would have thought they would have been freshly made? the peas were too watery, not worth the money as it was over £45 for the 3 of us. Didn't complain as the girls that served us were so polite, but wish we had. I should have checked out the reviews before we went as would have gone to the "Huntsman" but hey ho, will not return,

1/5 stars I went in today with a pal I ordered a sauagse butty and cheesy chips the sausage butty was cold and the chips really uncooked my friend emdidnt enjoy his either for the same reason

Ordered lightly battered fish and small chips .both over cooked infact chips burnt but the chef said they wasn't and because I'd eaten some couldn't refund .not that I asked for a refund but this chef pursumed . I should not have ordered looking back as the place looked quiet unkept and dirty .so next time I'll go with gutt instinct and walk away . Food hygien is important .always thought compos was a good chippy but defernatly not on this occasion . Chef was quiet rude really and gave me a sly comment on way out like she wanted last word .childish really .

A cold welcome, no acknowledgment of arrival! Place it self was cold and no atmosphere, very expensive, website prices clearly outdated, small portions and a cold tea pot = cold tea! Wont be rushing. Back.

Seems to have changed hands and gone down hill. Used to be very good and very reasonable prices but now far far too expensive.Jackson's steak pudding with chips, mushy peas and gravy, £13.50. Dry bread £1.00, Tea £2.80 and Coffee £3.00. Total for my lunch, £17.30. Jackson's steak pudding was nice but then Compos do not make those. You can buy those at the butchers. Chips like cardboard and horrible.Prices ridiculously over the top and certainly will not be returning to eat there.My advise is to give it a miss. Don't waste your money.Two local pubs near me do a two course light lunch for £11

Used to eat here a lot afew years back. Returned after 2 years and all I can say is absolutely revolting. Chips like cardboard, fish tasted like absolutely nothing. Definitely changed hands as nothing like what it used to be. Avoid…

Went down to Compo’s this evening for fish chips and mushy peas, everything was perfect and will definitely be back!!!!

Called in early December as the father-in-law fancied fish and chips I got myself fishcake and chips the fish cake looked black like it had been refried five or more times absolutely disgusting chips full of black bits and greasy as I don't know what. Will never go back.

I have been here on many occasions but sadly will not be going back. The standard of the food has gone down hill. You can go 5 minutes down the road and the quality of the food elsewhere is brilliant.

Have been going to compo’s for a couple of years and always found food delicious, however, lately chips are not good definitely gone down in taste and quality. Don’t know if there has been a change of ownership or change of ingredients to explain the deterioration as it certainly has deteriorated. Went back after having a poor meal meal to test if it was a one off but no, the return visit was just as bad. So disappointed will not be going to compo’s in the future. Also prices have recently gone up by a significant amount.

Bought fish and chips which were very not great. Fat running off the paper. Fish must have been cut with a razor, so thin. Batter soggy.What a fall. what happened to the best f and c shop which now seems to be the worst.And £14 for the privilege.Be long while before visiting again

The most expensive and worst fish and chips i have ever had - undercooked , slimy batter - Greasy and really poor £8.20 with a pot of curry sauce- avoid avoid - Avoid!!!

Not sure what happened here but food changed drastically, home made pie no more. Yesterday pie chips and gravy , chips peas and gravy dry and had small amount of raw chips in both meals and pukka pie was soggy.

I have been a customer at Compis for many years and the food has been consistently good. However there has been a significant downturn this year. I’m assuming that it’s now got new owners. I called yesterday the fish tho freshly cooked and hot were tiny and had lost most of the batter, the chips were the smallest portion possible and were luke warm. The wait time is long even though there was only one customer before me. Very disappointing, I think they need to assess their frying skills whilst they still have a customer base.

Stopped off for Fish and Chips very disappointed in the meal. We only drove 1 mile from the chip shop and when we opened the box the fish batter was soggy and did not look great. The chips were very pale and not fully cooked. The Mushy pea’s were like pond water runny and a bit of green added they tasted awful. A brighter note the curry source was OKWould we go again NO there’s much better Fish and Chip nearby.

I have lived in Holmfirth for over 40 years. I bought fish and chips regularly from Compos almost since they first opened. Unfortunately the quality of the food here has gradually gone down and down over the last few years, The food was FANTASTIC years ago. I have been back several times in the last year, hoping that things would improve, but they did not. They really need to get a grip on their frying of fish and chips as these are now some of the worst fish and chips around. I will definitely NOT be going back EVER again as there are so many good chippies around the Holme valley. Get some new frying staff and try to improve before it is too late for your business.

Wow. Food was awful and chips undercooked. Contacted compos through email to make them aware. There were no condiments on the food either. They told me it was due to seasonal potatoes (lies). I responded by saying it definitely wasn’t the potatoes as my mum owned a chippy for many years and they were definitely undercooked. This was their response;Go and open your own fish and chip shop then?You seem to be an expert? You can buy this one if you want? £2m I’ll take for it? The mortgage is high though.They are absolutely bonkers and the last thing they’ll need to worry about is a mortgage when they speak to customers like this . Needless to say I won’t be visiting again. The food was rubbish but the response to my complaint sealed it, £25 for food we couldn’t eat and then to be spoke to to like that!! I wasn’t even looking for a refund but rather making them aware. It was 10 minutes before closing time and I suspect the fryers had either being turned off or they were quickly trying to get last orders out. It’s a massive red flag when something goes wrong and they’ve got either a teenager or someone that is clearly insane responding to customers. Stay clear.

Disappointed on the quality of the fish and chips. The fish had soft batter and the chips were greasy and a bit undercooked. Having said this they were a reasonable price and tasted ok.

Nice meal of fish and chips. Fish not the tastiest I’ve had but batter was really good and chips really tasty. If I was hungrier I’d need a jumbo size. Price gave good value for money. Good car park.

Visited here today, had to eat in the car due to no indoor dining, what an amazing portion of fish and chips, the batter was so light and bubbly, i hate a thick cakey batter .. this was just divine, nice thick chips too.. would definitely be returning.

I had to wait nearly 20 minutes there were three people in front of me. I had ordered cod and chips. Waiting that at the time you expect to be fresh the fish was fine but the chips were not cooked properly I’m still hard in the middle I work close side of the counter I know I can surf faster with more of a smile on my face and I know I can fry quicker certainly better than the standard efforts and chips I’m currently supposed to be eating. I know it’s hot I know it’s hard work but for the amount of money paid for fish and chips I could’ve got a curry and been be able to guarantee the quality. Waiting 20 minutes it’s not a sign of authenticity. Sorry but I’m going to think twice about going there again just lost a local customer

This chippy used to be good and was a favourite of ours for years. However it has been taken over with new owners and the food has gone terrible. I stopped coming for a while to see if it had improved and decided to try again a few days ago. Well all i can say is it has got worse. We ordered fish and fish and was horribly disappointed. They were swimming in grease and all the fish was broken up in pieces. The chips were white and soggy. They tasted awful and was unfit for consumption. We threw them away and i felt sick for the rest of the day. That was their last chance. Never again will i come back..Uggh

I’m glad I hadn’t read some of the (pathetic) reviews on this website about Compos before going today. We had two portions of Small Fish & Chips at £4.50 each. There is an order & wait system to comply with C19 rules which was fine. F&C were served in a biodegradable box which coped with the food plus salt & vinegar - or is it non brewed condiment - then in a strong paper bag. Lovely soft chips, pure white fish & perfectly cooked batter. Friendly staff and very clean premises. 10 out of 10 from us.

We have just had a shocking experience at compos chippy today the chips had black pieces in.We have found multiple hairs in the chips.There was no taste in the chips at all. The staff was not wearing masks or gloves during the covid - 19 pandemic. Staff are not friendly. The cups of tea were horrendous.We will not be revisiting.

Stale chips fried in dirty fat, foul tasting, 2 cups of tea, 1 with sugar, well, she pointed to one with sugar, but there was none, the chips where totally inedible, I wanted to turn round, and throw them at them, but weather was horrible, and I was feeling sick from the few I had, ever belched dirty greasy fat belches? DONT go there, they are trading on good times, it’s worse than bad, £6.80 wasted, plus, my car stinks good style,

Driven past many times but had either just eaten or it was closed. Today however we made a point in visiting. We ordered completely hassle free on line. We were given a time and when we arrived everything was ready. The presentation in the biodegradable boxes was really good, the peas were in snap top containers, and the the jumbo sausage we bought for our dog was really well wrapped. All the food was piping hot, the fish was excellent as were the chips and peas. The wooden knives and forks at a miserly 10p were really good and our dog loved his sausage. We will definitely be back.

Had a takeaway for two. Usually the pies here are homemade and fresh. Now you pay £3 for a pukka pie made in a factory. Dry and tasteless. I could have got better from Lidl. Only gave a 2 because the chips were as lovely as usual.

Rang to order some food for myself only to get told by the man that answered who sounded quite stressed to order online. I went online but found there was a minimum order of £10! I only wanted to spend £7 so rang back up told the young girl that answered and she told who ever was frying and I heard him say “well she’ll have to come in then and wait!” Sorry to say but if you can’t take the heat get out of kitchen!

Hard chips. Slow service. Bin overflowing. Not great all round. Wouldn’t bother again to be honest. Not at all what I had expected.

We’ve been here a few times now and has mainly been very good for fish and chips, one time was not very nice but we came back a couple of times after that and was good. However this time it was shocking. I ordered fishcake chips and curry. It took 20 mins to cook and when I tucked into it I had a shock!! It was a slab of rock hard undercooked potato with a thin layer of fish then another rock hard slab of potato, Bloody awful and tasteless. I’m no cook but I could of sworn this isn’t how you make fish cakes. This is just lazy !!!

Tried this takeaway for the “Last of the Summer Wine” connection. Decided to get fish n chips from here while on holiday in Peak District. Great fish, chips were ok.

I purchased chicken and mushroom pie and chips today. It was the worse food I have ever bought, I will never go here again! I threw it all away uneaten. My husband ate his and is now ill with a bad tummy. The chicken was hard and tasted days old. The pastry was almost black and very greasy. The chips were scrapings, greasy and blighted. Compos staff should be ashamed selling this food to people, it was disgraceful!

Best ever meal for. Miles,I travel here from Sheffield at least once a fortnight, Can’t beat it ,well. haven’t yet.

Visited the takeaway side and was looking forward to lovely fish and chips. How disappointing to open the wrapping and find tepid food, very pale and soaking in grease, almost like the fat/oil was not hot enough and so the batter just soaked it up instead of frying in it. Won't be visiting again in a hurry.

This is the first time at this restaurant / takeaway, because of the Covid 19 pandemic ......only the takway section was being used and pub seating was used in the car park for people to eat their food and drink.We all thoroughly enjoyed what we had to eat, it is definitely worth another visit.

Great take-away cod and chips. Good portions and really great value. Scraps to boot too. All very "Covid-secure" too. Firm favourite.

Been here so many times, always to eat in. Sat outside and had a take away. Lovely but the presentation was awful.

Title say it all really. Overcooked fish and batter. Chips scrawny and again dry and overcooked. We’ve eaten fish and chips twice since and both immeasurable superior, one from Skelmanthorpe and the other the near Wakefield.

Delicious via online booking, twice in the last month. Food fresh, ready for secure social distance collection. Well priced and delicious!! We will be back again soon.

Hadn’t had Compos fish n chips for ages so had some this evening and they were lovely , we will be coming again regularly, we enjoy the ride to Compos as well.

My partner said we would go for a drive and decided to come here from Doncaster. Wow what can I say we had the best fish and chips ever and the mushy peas were also the best flavoured ones I've ever had. The batter on the fish which was cod as standard was golden and crispy just how I like it. My partner also said it was the best he had ever had too. Guess we will be going there again. Staff are friendly, warming and polite. They had signs where to stand on the floor and only had two people in the shop at any given time. This was good for me as I suffer with anxiety and I have been shielding during lockdown so this was a nice little ease back I to society and well worth the chance.

Can’t believe some of the comments on here ?Can only think they are from competitors.I first visited compo’s about 35 years ago and have never EVER eaten better fish!Better than Ramsdens, and the other big names out there in my opinion.The batter is simply delicious, light and feathery and I always ask for extra ‘bits’ because it is so good. I live 45 minutes away in Buxton, and it is worth the trip every time. Really big, beautifully fresh white cod and at a fraction of the price you can pay elsewhere. I ate from there again on Thursday and it was as fantastic as always.6 stars for me

Just been 14/5/20, Very Covid secure, you can tell they have given this a lot of careful consideration. Job well done👍 Back to the food, excellent as always we travel 30 minutes for the best fish & chips anywhere! Happy they have reopened

The food was very nice. Especially the chips. It was cold in the restaurant, the radiators weren’t on. There was a new Australian waitress - it was her first day. She was lovely and was really trying her best. She was doing everything on her own! Sitting people down, taking orders, serving food and drinks, doing the bills/till, clearing tables. Seemed she had just been thrown in! I felt really sorry for her. There was an older over done up lady kept popping in and out of the kitchen to reluctantly help her. She wasn’t being very supportive of her and her customer service skills to customers were zero! No manners or acknowledgement. Seems I’m not the only one to leave a review who noticed this! I would come back for the food but the chaotic atmosphere and lack of customer service (not from the Australian lady) would put me off. It was busy and first day or not nobody could have done all that alone. They need more staff!

Seems to be a change of staff of late, subsequently every time we visit the food is piping hot, perfect batter and the staff are very efficient. So we can enjoy our fish and chips with a welcoming atmosphere. The mushy peas are spot on

If you like your fish to contain enough grease to lubricate a steam train ,then this is the place for you .If you prefer fake vinegar (non brewed condiment ...yes I kid you not !!!) then I’m sure you will be content ....But if you prefer crispy batter ,real vinegar and a fish fryer that doesn’t smoke cigarettes whilst working ... then I would suggest you avoid Compo’s and spend your hard earned cash elsewhere .

We waited 20mins in the foyer yet there were empty tables. The staff ignored us. We eventually sat down and waited a further 15mins before a miserable scruffy waitress came. Our tea arrived and 20mins passed by, People who came in behind us all were served. The restaurant was cold, people sat in coats so we got up and left. This isn't acceptable at all, we'll never go back . The staff looked like they wanted to be somewhere else.

Love going to Compo’s,food great and staff very friendly.Plus I don’t know if everyone knows they don’t just do Fish and Chip’s.We all had their Homemade Pie,which they have a variety of.

We had been looking forward all week to having our Friday takeaway fish & chip supper. All I can say is that it just wasn’t up to standard.

Called in here today for a meal in the restaurant, it's a comfortable, clean and spacious place, the staff are very pleasant and service was very good. I had fish, chips, mushy peas, with bread and butter and coffee, everything was very good lovely fish with a nice light crispy batter, decent chips, and a nice portion of mushy peas, all served nice and hot. Overall very satisfying.

Popped in on the way back over the hills... been a few years ago and it didn’t disappoint! Great service, great food... will definitely come again

Not been to Compo’s Restaurant (Chippy) for a few years but it was excellent. The portions & the service were excellent. I had a whale of a fish , with chunky chips, peas & sherry trifle. With a large pot of tea!☕️

We drive an hour to get to Compo's as it's the best chippy around. Always great quality, great service and reasonably priced. Cannot fault it.

Visiting family in Holmfirth and decided to try Compos. It was quiet when we arrived as it was nearly 2 o'clock and the lunchtime rush had probably ended. We should have realised by the grubbiness of the menus things might not be great. Anyway we ordered 5 fish and chips which promptly arrived . It was clear to see that the chips were bone dry and had been reheated . The fish was on the small side and thin.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, Portions were large and the fish excellent. Not convinced about the batter it was very greasy and not very nice.

This is an excellent fish and chip place with very friendly and helpful staff. Sometimes you have to wait as it is very popular.

Have used Compo’s for many years but at some point over the last year they have started using inferior fish which is unfortunately a thin and disappointing piece of fish the species of which they choose not to identify on the take away menu.

I regularly visit on a lunchtime. The fish is good and fresh and the scampi too is great. Staff are friendly and helpful too.

On a day off work decided to take my mother out for lunch. We went to Compos Fish Restaurant at Holmfirth.

We drove 80 miles for real fish and chips because our lad lives in USA and misses chippy dinners. The food was good but the staff seemed to be totally disorganised. Kep walking back to the kitchen past dirty tables, service was slow. We waited 45 minutes and it wasn't very busy gave up on puddings and went elsewhere for ice cream.

Excellent menu, we had the over 60 special. Fish and chips, with b&b;, tea or coffee for £6 - whats not to like.

My wife and I went into the restaurant for cod and chips. After the waitress advised size of fish we settled for the "pensioners special". It was ample, really tasty and came with bread and butter and tea - all for £6 ! Itwas ample

Came here for a family lunch after a walk out. Great fish and chips with the option of bread the traditional way. Portions are good amd its great value for money.

My 98 year old Grandfather asked me to take him here for lunch, he wanted fish and chips. The place is a tribute to Compo from last of the summer wine. It clean and tidy the food is excellent and lots of it. My Grandfather had an OAP Haddock and chips two slices of bead and butter and a pot of tea for £ 6.00 absolute bargain.

A must do visit, fish is best in Yorkshire, gets very busy at weekends, not expensive and portions are good

This is the best fish and chip shop/restaurant in the world which is why we chose it for our wedding anniversary dinner. If you like yorkshire gravy its unbeatable and their home made pies are hugh full of whatever you choose shortcrust pastry lovely. Do visit if you get the chance.

For a place that specialises in fish and chips - my chips were very greasy indeed. Too greasy to eat, had to bin them.

After hearing good things from a family member, myself and my partner took a drive to compo's one evening on a whim. It took us 50 minutes to drive there from the other side of the pennines. Upon arrival service was slow and we had to wait a while before being acknowledged and eventually seated. We ordered and our food arrived quickly which was good. Portion sizes were generous. Overall it seemed of satisfactory quality at the time. We finished eating at 8pm and arrived home at 9pm. I was woken up at 2am with the most awful stomach pains! Cold sweats, shivers. I ran to the bathroom where I spent a long while in agony, vomiting and being sat on the loo! I had food poisoning! I only had a banana and toast for lunch that day at 12 noon and I was fine until 5/6 hours after the compo's meal. I was devestated as I was hoping to be a returning customer. Sad to say that this experience has put me well off! Spent most of the night awake and had work the next morning :( not a nice experience.
