I buy the coffee online. It never fails to impress. I like the espresso No 2 beans which they use in the shop, also the Italian roast and the continental Decaf. I notice people complaining about the shops appearance and saying its basic, but people need to know this shop opened in 1985 long before the Gentrification and barista culture infested the area. This is as close as you'll get to a community coffee shop.

A bit of an institution on the Portobello Road. Not much to look at inside it’s a prosaic space with wooden tables at the back and high stools at the front window. There are a few pastries and cakes. One of the two female baristas was busy making fruit smoothies. But coffee is the thing here. Beans are roasted to produce a thick complex brew. No complaints about my flat white, frothy milk added to espresso with a deeply satisfying result.

Although this Portobello landmark does have a great product it comes with the worse possible staff I've ever encountered in a business in London. The manager, Ivanka, is absolutely useless and walks around as if she's doing the customers a favour. Untrained, rude and no manners staff.

The coffee here is a bit harsh for my liking and the decor if you sit inside is a bit stark and sterile. However, if you like your coffee strong and manga to get a table out the front then you can sit and people watch to your heart’s content. It is good to see an independent coffee place still going in this area, but if you want something smoother Joe & the Juice ( which is a few doors down) might be closer to the mark and a bit cosier.

I worked in Portobello from 2003 to 2017 and myself and all my colleagues made regular trips every day to get our coffee from here. When we moved to Kings Cross last year, it's been the one thing we all really really miss about being in Portobello. Having bought a giant bag of fresh Espresso beans (which they grind there and then for you) to take home, I've made the effort to travel back there every 3 months to top up. I will not buy supermarket ground coffee anymore... I'm hooked on the best coffee and everyone who stays with me, understands why I continue to go back. The staff are professional, and yes sometimes abrupt, but a bit of politeness shown and they're as good as gold. The odd dog sat at the foot of their owner inside the shop doesn't alter the taste of this coffee... It's worth the travel every time and the quality doesn't wane. I'm a coffee plant queen... just wish they'd move to Kings Cross.

My only criticism is that the music can sometimes be a bit noisy, but the coffee is wonderful. This also the best place to buy coffee beans - and they will grind them to your specification if needed. Very good value and superb quality - there is a huge choice which may be a bit daunting but the staff will help and because you can buy small quantities, it's fun and not expensive to try different types or blends. The tea bags are also excellent and the chocolates are delicious. I have been buying my coffee (and tea) for home consumption since the "Tea and Coffee Plant" was a stall on the opposite corner, many years ago, and the quality has only increased since then. Good choice of newspapers and a nice clean toilet too.
