Came for lunch with the dog after recommendation of nearby vet. Welcomed. Allowed to sit wherever we chose. Menu immediately available and specials updated. Quaint area at the far end with a few books on shelves and some white fairy lights strung about the ceiling. We were at the other end. Almost all customers pensioner couples and a two eccentrics sat as singles. We both went for specials. I had the odd sounding soup - cauliflower, brocoli, Stilton and Yarg, followed by my first ever circular veg lasagne and my partner the puff pastry topped chicken and leak pie. All these dishes were (and we were warned) much, much too hot - but we waited and although the lasagne had little texture all three items were tasty. With a pot of tea each the lunch came to approx £34 which was about right. I’m not sure we would have taken the place as being arty (maybe they have evening events?). The high level vent in the lavatory was blocked by dust and fluff; and the varnished surface of our, and the other tables we could see had a crinkled and rough surfaces, giving the impression that they were wet and or sticky which they actually weren’t. Don’t like even low level gripes but surely this business could spend a short time vacuuming those vent, sanding and putting a fresh coat on the table tops and most importantly showing the kitchen how to send out food and edible temperatures. The two servers who dealt with us were very friendly, informative and helpful. This place is nothing special but we had a good lunch and I dare say we could not have had a better one in any other Okehampton cafe.

Nice ambience but food was not great for the price. At £52 for lunches and coffee for four it could be better. The cheese salad had a lot of grated cheese plonked on top. No chutney or anything to make it special. The bread was not granary but cheap dry light brown, only one slice which fell apart when the freezing cold butter was added. The prawns on my salad were plentiful, but no lemon slice and only half a tomato with a great deal of lettuce. The other food; a fried breakfast and French toast were okay. Pity it wasn’t more special because we were celebrating a birthday.

Used to use this place regularly, a few years ago. Changed owners, I think. Certainly different set-up. Went because I knew they sold gluten-free and I was in need of a lunchtime sandwich pdq, to take away. Okey seems to be a bit thin on gluten free commodity. Had to wait a while for it. Was a bit shocked, I'm afraid. Six quid for a medium sized bap (not a sandwich) with a decent amount of grated cheese. Not much butter and it didn't taste like butter, but might I suppose have been low grade. The cheese was definitely very mild with little taste. Have had nicer gluten-free rolls. The tomato wasn't sliced, but quartered........... odd......... No napkin with it - good job I had plenty of tissue with me! So, regrettably, I really don't think it constitutes good value. Pity. It's a nice looking cafe and clean. The service is OK, but the staff don't look terribly happy and that makes me feel sorry for them.

Had tea & coffee here with our King Charles cavalier dog on Friday 21st April . quirky old sewing machine tables A Lovely young lady served us .. tea in a teapot with quaint china cup & saucer Great cappuccino. Menu looked interesting I was particularly impressed with the vegetarian daily specials options.also seemed very reasonably priced. A thing that says a lot about an establishment is “ how clean are the toilets ?” No need at all for any concerns here . I have a fear of using public conveniences but I desperately needed to use them They were immaculate!! Well done I am a fully qualified chef and hotelier the establishments public toilets should be a benchmark as to how clean the establishment is ! After if they are an unclean what goes on in the kitchen?

Have been here several times before and enjoyed the food. Yesterday I had a tiny portion of lasagne that had obviously been heated in the microwave and was dry and tough. Was £12 too. Small salad with it was ok and the garlic bread. Certainly won’t be having that again. Husband had chilli which was the same price but a much more generous portion and was nice he said.

I ordered a fruit scone with butter. It looked delicious when it arrived. Cutting into it however was like trying to cut a marshmallow in half. It was rubbery because it had been massacred in a microwave! I very politely informed the waitress that it had possibly been over heated and was given short shrift. I was informed that the microwave is set to heat them and that’s that. No apology whatsoever. I will not go there again and I told her so too.

The cafe is situated in the centre of town and offered indoor and outdoor seating. Appeared to be dog friendly, outside at least. Oat latte was good and the veggie breakfast excellent value with eggs, fried potatoes, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes and - best of all - four “veggie sausages”, which were not the standard pretend meat sausage but lovely vegetable croquettes. Service by Sasha was efficient and friendly.

The tea was good, quirky teapot, real tea leaves. The bottled organic apple juice was very appley & was local. All the staff were friendly and helpful. However the food was - the most polite thing I can say is that it was awful. The vegetarian breakfast - just terrible - whoever made the scrambled eggs must have been wanting to teach us a lesson or something. The so called vegetarian sausages - who decided they were a good idea? Deep fried and microwaved The ‘special’ (their words not mine) of liver and bacon - the liver was so dry and overcooked, the sauce was very salty & the bacon was limp and fatty. Accompanied by frozen vegetables & totally tasteless rubbery mashed potato. If we hadn’t been hungry after cycling from Ledford we wouldn’t have been able to eat even half of it. We were fooled into sitting down there because it was fairly busy, I’d be amazed if anyone returns for the food though.

Well…went into Okehampton as we had to wait for accommodation and was in need of coffee, we waited at the door to be seated as per chalk board, the place was busy and even though there was staff around we had to wait for a table to be cleaned. Went and sat down, decided what we wanted to eat and drink, went to the counter and was met with such an abrupt lady telling us she would take our order in a bit I’m very busy we were unaware it was table service as we hadn’t been told, if we didn’t have to wait for the accommodation I’d of walked out there and then as that tone to a customer is unacceptable.Ordered and food and drinks came, as it hits the table you pay which is such a bizarre method. The cake I had was very dry.Later on that evening I had very bad cramps and spent sometime on the throne, my rein lasted a few hours. During the day and evening we’d all had the same thing so could have only been the coffee I had there. I’d asked for oat milk but was unusually sick.

The drinks arrived 30 minutes before the food. When the food did arrive I had to send my sausage back as it was so overcooked I had difficulty getting my fork through it. My wife’s scrambled egg was inedible. Not sure what they had mixed with it but tasted like cheap margarine or vegetable oil but was disgusting. On the plus side the tea and coffee were nice.

While the staff are friendly enough and the atmosphere is pleasant, they drop the ball on quality of service. As a solo diner I was given a table, told they would come over to my table to take my order. 20 minuets later i had to ask a passing waitress to come take my order. I wasn't informed that they were only doing sandwiches when seated, as I was given the full menu to look over while waiting and there was no indication that the cooked menu wasn't available. This seemed to aggravate a large group who came in after me, waiting just as long only to be told the same. The sandwich I asked for came with a salad, and I asked the waitress to please make sure there's no raw onion in it, as i'm allergic. While the salad came without onion as asked, it was half doused in a home made coleslaw which was for the most part raw onion. I could eat around it, but I think they need to be more proactive in warning people about what's in their food if a allergy is stated as it could be far worse than mine. The food itself is fine, good quality and nice drinks, I just think the staff need to be more aware of their customers.

I used to love Grants but today will be my last visit. Our waitress asked us to pay whilst half the group was still eating; insisted in fact that we go up to the counter to pay. I pointed out that this made us feel kicked out but they made no apologies for this. We would probably have ordered cakes and another round of coffees, perhaps left a tip, but instead we felt unwelcome, so hurried up and left. Their explanation was that some people have left without paying, which I can sympathise with, but they could have taken payment when we ordered instead of interrupting the meal.Sadly the meal itself was also poor. My £7.50 jacket potato was tiny with inedible skin, presumably microwaved. The entire salad could’ve fitted on my fork.

My partner and I live fairly locally to Okehampton and have enjoyed nice lunches in here in the past, but standards have seriously lapsed recently. We went in today for lunch, the staff were rude and inattentive and the food we had was far below par.We asked for a table outside, to which the waitress told us “I think there’s one over there, I’ll be over in a bit to clear it” the table was never sanitised and we had a 30 minute wait for the young lad to come and take our order. When he did, he spoke little more than a sentence to us and made it clear we were an inconvenience. Our drinks (two canned soft drinks) didn’t arrive. When we finally got the waitress’s attention she told us “there’s a hold up with drinks”. When they eventually came they were wrong, we’d asked for orange and they gave us lemon. As soon as she brought our food to us, she slapped the plates on the table and immediately presented us with the bill! Before we’d even had a chance to eat it or look at what we’d been served. I had a sausage sandwich, the sausages inside were dehydrated and burnt, and my partner’s waffles were soft and limp. There were no pleases, thank yous or apologies from the staff on shift. We ate our food (because we were hungry) and left with our canned drinks in hand. Do yourselves a favour and eat at Toast!

Nothing!!!!! When we finally decided to ask for the manager the staff were argumentative and not apologetic in the slightest I got told the manager would ‘ have a word’ and that’s it..can’t comment on the food because we never even got a menu!!Won’t be going again, unless perhaps if they decide to employ some capable staff!

I visited Okehampton (due to a work meeting) on Friday 18th Dec, and looked for a nice place to have breakfast. I spotted this lovely looking cafe, down a side alley, and enquired within as to whether they serve breakfast. It was open and people were inside. The reply was that “we don’t start breakfast until 9.30”. On checking my watch I saw that it was 9.17am. I was quite disappointed that, given that breakfast servings were due to start in only 13 minutes time, the reply wasn’t more welcoming. Perhaps a cheery: “We’re just getting breakfast ready, but come and sit down, and we’ll get you a cup of tea/coffee”. Due to this, they lost my trade to the Wetherspoons across the road.

I was eating my lunch when a brown slug slid out from underneath my salad portion on my plate. Will not be eating in that cafe again.

Popped in for a quick breakfast while waiting for the Castle to open. Nice day so sat outside. Staff were attentive and friendly and breakfast/drinks were of a good standard. Reasonably priced too.

We popped in here a year ago and being back in Okehamption found ourselves popping in again. Not let down at all. The menu is good with plenty of local produce being used.

We stopped by for a full English and we weren't disappointed. Nice big pot of tea, generous sized tasty breakfast. Efficient friendly staff. We would definitely visit again when in the area.

We have eaten at this cafe a few times and the food has always been good but this is not a family friendly cafe. I would recommend sitting outside if you have children so there is less pressure and you can enjoy the food and convenience of the locality.

Very mixed story on our latest visit (gourmet burger & lasagne). The good: the gourmet burger was good quality; the salad was fresh; the home made coleslaw was good; the bottled beer was bottle conditioned and very nice; and the service was good. The bad: the otherwise nice salad was completely drenched in a very sweet dressing; the burger was slightly burnt and very dry; the portion size of the 'large' lasagne was very small indeed given that there is a large and a small size on the menu and we had ordered the 'large'; the lasagne itself was very stodgy and strange tasting and not at all nice; and the chips were rather few in number and also a bit overdone. We have had much nicer meals here previously but this one was disappointing.

Went for lunch waited over an half hour to receive burnt cheese on toast. Sent it back and refused replacement. My husband had a Stilton burger which was okay but a bit pricey. Will not return.

Dropped in for coffee whilst shopping. The coffee and service were great, apart from the chap behind the counter who didn’t look very happy to see ask when we walked in & mumbled were we ready to pay. Decided to have a bit of lunch after looking at the specials board. Other half had a small breakfast ( it really was) I opted for a vegan tart and chose veg to go with it. Admittedly I chose not to have the potatoes that also came with it, but was still taken aback when it arrived. The tart wasn’t much bigger than a jam tart, that was over cooked, with a scattering of al dente vegetables that really were too hard to enjoy. Price advertised? £8.95. Price I paid after waitress asked if everything was ok and I explained my disappointment? £8.95! No effort made to reduce price at all in the name of good customer service. Will avoid eating there in future. Shame because the coffee is excellent and staff lovely on the whole.

My wife and I walked past Grants and thought that looks good, the service was good as well as the lovely coffee and tea but the breakfast was terrible value for money, I have never seen a smaller sausage, slice of bacon, egg and portion of beans, no slice of bread or toast not a slice of tomato or mushroom and all for £5.75 plus the cost of the tea and coffee. Never again.

Today we decided to try out Grant’s coffee house in Okehampton. We thought it would be nice to sit outside and have a drink in the sun with family inc children. When my cousin and he’s friend turned up we told them to order a coffee and join us. Unfortunately to owner was extremely rude telling them to go and sit down as it’s table service! He was so rude and he’s voice was so raised that quite a few customers mentioned how bad it was after. We decided to pay the bill and leave without finishing our drinks, cream teas etc...

The man who works in the cafe has to be one of the rudest people I’ve ever met. He raised his voice and became quite aggressive at a simple request. When we politely pointed out his attitude he just upped the arrogance. I live locally and had heard a few horror stories about him shouting at customers and had frankly avoided going there but meeting friends today decided to give it a chance as it was a nice spot to sit in the sun but never again! Everything said about this place is true! I’m just upset that visitors will think this is the welcome they get in Okehampton, this place is truly an exception , other nearby coffee shops will offer a much warmer welcome . Avoid at all costs!

On my motorbike, decided to stop off at Oakhampton for a coffee and have a bite to eat. For a tenner, the picture says it all, overcooked, greasy, order incorrect, slow service.. disappointed, but maybe it was just a busy day.....and overcharged 2.40 says tea or coffee included and free refills!!

We often stay in Okehampton at the White Hart. The breakfast at Grants and most of the staff are so much better than in the aforementioned hotel so often eat there despite the fact it is more expensive. Last visit the food was great as usual, on going to pay the bill however I was not impressed, the man at the counter was in the process of being rude to another customer because she seemed a little bewildered by the admittedly good range of available coffee, after she completed her order he actualy said " now look, you have caused a queue", he then turned to me, I was trying to do a bit of thinking to fairly split a bill and his impatience was obvious and downright rude. The food here is very good but this person who I think may be the owner needs to seriously consider his public persona, we all have bad days but this was not acceptable, I have noticed him looking morose and miserable on previous visits but this time he was downright obnoxious, the only reason this review isn't worse is because of the good food and the rest of the staff

2 weeks ago, after a morning of everything going wrong, with an 18 month old Grandson in tow, we went into this little gem of a place. He needed food and so did I. It was really busy, but was immediately met by one of the staff who found me a table in the corner, then a high chair and completely went out of their way to make everything calm again. They warmed up some food I had for him, and I ordered a BLT baguette and some much needed tea! Well, the food was so fresh with a beautiful salad and coleslaw, the tea was excellent quality. Little man was happy with some added skinny fries. It is so refreshing these days to find places like this where not only the food is of great quality but the customer service from all the staff was 100%. They could not do enough. Would recommend to anyone. Thank you. PS.

So many things. Specifically asked for HOT chocolate drink, not tepid, it came tepid and had to drink quickly before too cold. Specifically asked for NO garlic due to allergies, when the 'skin-on' fries came they had no skin in sight and when I tried one it was obviously garlic. Waitress then said she hadn't noticed on the packet! I found tomatoes in the burger, not stated on the menu and again, I have intolerances to tomato. Although waitress grudgingly apologised she was also offhand when she returned several mins later, despite seeing me in tears (final straw after personal bereavement), she quite rudely told me my food and drink had been refunded. Seemed less than concerned about dangers of food allergies and not bothering to check when specifically asked! Will try elsewhere in future, shame because when visited last year thought it was nice place, gone downhill!

Managed to get the very last table for a mid afternoon late lunch between Christmas and new year. Although the freshly prepared food and piping hot pot of tea in this very busy Cafe was excellent I do find their prices a bit steep. Short red haired waitress was very helpful, but found the older waitress seemed very abrupt and when I went to pay my bill she was moaning loudly at the till area - very unprofessional.

On arrival we sat down, my tiny granddaughter touched the handle on the patio door which we were sat in front of. I told her not to touch it , but as I had just finished saying it, the older waitress very rudely shouted at her that is she breaks it she will have to sit outside. RUDE, RUDE, RUDE.

I would have loved to do a review but after sitting outside for 20 minutes waiting for 'table service' having been inside to make them aware I was there. I left after another 5 minutes. Stuck my head around the door to let them know I was not impressed. Chap just waved and said. 'CHEERS THEN' in a voice that suggested that he wasn't bothered. I suggest in Okehampton people go elsewhere for as good a food and a far better attitude.

We have stopped here a few times over the last few years on our way to visit friends in Truro. We have had delicious food and excellent service every time. We dislike service stations so a short detour off the motorway works well for us. The food at Grants is freshly prepared and the homemade coleslaw that came with the sandwiches was delicious. The ham is proper ham not plastic ham and the bread likewise was proper fresh bread. We will definitely continue to detour here on our trips to Cornwall.

We found Grants while holidaying in the area. While we'd rate the restaurant as 4/5 overall. the coffee was 6/5! Excellent flat white with continental roast beans. Cheerful, welcoming staff. We'll be back next year.

Travelling back from Cornwall, my other half and I needed a dog friendly stop off point other than the usual service stationpaper coffee cup. Coffee at Grant’s, near the Red Lion in Okehampton, is bang on the nail for this. Lovely welcome for me, Sian and our massive lab, charming interior with super clean facilities on ground floor level. Coffee was spot on, as was Ian’s vanilla milkshake! Breakfast butty also hit the spot for this non-morning person traveller. Ruby also scored a treat from the wait staff. An absolute gem in this gorgeous town.
