Codfathers Portland in Weymouth and Portland

The worst fish and chips ever. Cod over cooked. Batter burnt cod inside shrivelled and stuck to over crispy batter. Chip dry and shrivelled clearly cooked more than twice. This was a complete waste of money inedible even my cat wouldn’t touch it as it tasted and smelt of burnt fat!

Arrived home after a long 4 days working away, hot, tired, hungry and in need of a shower so decided on a takeaway . Ordered via their online Storekit system. Large fish, small chips for me and a 9 inch Pizza for hubby. After 50 mins I rang to ask about how much longer the delivery would be. ( we are about 2 miles away) Told that they were busy and our order would be out soon in next batch. Waited another 30 mins and called again as this was now and hour and 20 mins since ordering only to be told again they are busy and would be out in next delivery batch. Finally arrived 1 hour and 40 mins after ordering. Large fish while fairly long in length was really skinny and definitely not the weight stated. Also dried up and brown in parts. Batter literally lthe texture of cardboard, not crisp or soft even just lkind of stale and inedible. Chips were rock hard dried up and lukewarm. Pizza similarly overcooked. What a shame as Codfathers used to be really good but this was a disgrace and waste of money. If they can't cope on a busy night then stop the online orders for the night or reject them.

saw the place on bus journey back to sweet hill and really couldn't resist to see what was what. we had a large portion of chips (for two) with the large curry sauce this evening friday 5 July and I gotta say this was the Best we have had. the gentleman serving on the till was a real help thank you. on a side note pubs and restaurants could learn a thing or two from this place in regards to portion size as I often feel let down ordering chips in a pub considering the extortion you sell them for.

We have been eating at the Codfather's for over 30 years. Great fish, perfect batter and generous portions. We ordered a large cod and chips yesterday. We normally order a small cod and chips once a month as a monthly treat but we wanted to treat ourselves last night. That was the WORST fish and chips we ever had. The batter was dripping in oil but more importantly the fish was as big as a small portion (we had ordered big) and the chips, which we normally can't finish, were so sparse, maybe 12 of them, you could see the box through the food. We also had a pot of gravy and that was just brown water. £26 for a very bad experience. We were very disappointed and frankly upset. The owner was not on the premises otherwise we would have had a chat to point out the unusual issues with the food. We hope someone from the Codfathers team will read this review and get in touch with us. We saw the name Paul Merry on other reviews? We'd appreciate a refund or a free fish and chips to restore our faith in this business which we used to love.

Great place for fish and chips. Very generous portions! Lovely staff. And food was spot on. Couldnt ask for much more! Would definetely reccommend!

Very friendly little place cooking up fresh fish and chips to order, can’t fault anything, fish batter was light and crisp, fish just flaked away and chips were perfectly cooked, awesome.

The chips as always were hot and tasty. Lady on the phone is always polite and asks how we are. The delivery drivers are always on time and the food is always hot. Best chippy around.

Awful food AGAIN! Food was cold when it was delivered and missing items. It’s a shame coz I love the staff in there and I have had good food from them. But recently it’s been awful. I’ve been going to them for my fish and chips for nearly 3 years and I’ve just waisted my last £35 on the food. I tried reheating my food so I wasn’t waiting another hour for food to find bones in the fish and the breaded mushrooms that hard to eat I just didn’t bother in the end. I’m a little upset with the food and will now be going elsewhere.

Barely warm. A mix of very cold and hard chips with some fresher ones. The cod batter was undercooked and had almost melted to the chips. Asked for salt and vinegar as I had no vinegar in and none was put on. I only rarely get a takeaway and this was a waste of £22.

The food was nice but very very expensive, and could not believe that our meals came in the smallest pots, we were all still hungry after for the price that we paid not to mention she was going to over charge until we said.Not sure if we will go back again

It was the only Fish&Chip shop open on the Island on a Friday, good selection of food value for money the best fish and chips I've ever eaten, the proprietor Luke was very friendly I took a seat at the table outside and was told when my food was ready.

This is the second time we’ve had a bad takeaway from here (out of 3 visits, we won’t be going back). I’ve seen fish with more moisture inside a budgie cage. Mushy peas could’ve bound bricks together.

We got there walked into the shop and said hi to the four members of staff that were behind the counter only to be completely ignored!! We then stood there for a further few minutes not one staff member acknowledged us they just kept talking...

Good quality fish, plenty of chips, but could do with a bit more frying. The whole thing is in a paper wrapping so much of it sticks together.

We have been meaning to try this chippy for a while. A trip to Church Ope Cove gave us the chance to try it for lunch. So glad we did!

The Food was of a poor standard, starting with the chips that were not good at all,hard,stale oil taste and greasy,the cod was over Cooked and the batter was awful,overall not a good experience and will not return.

Went inside no other customer in the shop. A small number of customers waiting outside I checked with them they had all ordered already. None of the staff bothered to serve me. After waiting patiently for a few minutes another customer walks in and gets served immediately. I was left speechless and stayed that way when I walked out. I don't think they even noticed me.This was their chance to shine as I have used Rays nearby who have recently changed owners. I won't be making that mistake again.I went to Rays and their fish and chips were lovely so they have probably done me a favour.

The worst take away we have ever had. Brown left over bits of chicken in the kebab, no veg at all. Overcooked chips and potato wedges. All went straight in the bin! The delivery driver was lovely! Only saving grace. Not recommending here sorry

We came to Portland and visited Portland Bill, before heading back home we spotted Codfathers chip shop. Nothing was too much trouble they made gluten-free cod, as well as normal cod. The portions fed the family well. Very tasty and will remember this little chippy for our next visit.

Sorry to say that a visit this evening that resulted in a 25 minute wait to just place an order has resulted in us not returning to Codfathers on Portland. We live local and its disappointing were now looking elsewhere because the holiday trade will soon disappear!

On my visit to your Portland Fish and Chip shop I noticed a box of PALM OIL can you please confirm that you do cook in Palm oil.

We waited an hour & 20 mins for our order to be delivered, half the food was cold. Everything was dripping in oil and the pizza base was stale. Really disappointed, not to mention we were over charged by £6!! Won’t be visiting again anytime soon!

My daughter enjoyed her burger but frankly she'd eat anything. The fish had thick burnt batter, the chips were tiny bits and both were inedible. My husband has a new catchphrase for his dining experience 'spam fritter - night on the sh***er'

I was out walking on Portland this Saturday. When I decided to stop for a spot of lunch. I must say my fish and chips were delicious, the batter was light and crispy and there was so many chips I couldn’t eat them all. I will definitely stop here again for lunch.

Following a previous visit 2 years ago where we were put off by the poor standard of food, we decided to return recently hoping for improvement over 2 years, but sadly not....We ordered, 2 Cod & Chips.Firstly we were over charged by £4. The Large Chips were basically about 2 Kg of burnt, tasteless, greasy chips tipped into a paper bag, which needless to say went totally soggy, torn and were impossible to eat unwrap without falling on the floor.A huge amount and pointless waste putting wet soggy chips in a thin paper bag.......The fish portion were large granted but once again masking , wet soggy and greasy batter, quiet disgusting really and totally inedible. Over charged & poor quality food, greasy & tasteless. Will keep a wide berth from this place in future & the Buxton Road (Wyke) branch cooks the chips and bags in a similar manner as well.

Ordered our food arrived 1hr 15mjns later cold will not be returning anytime soon extremely dissatisfied and over charged according to menu and delivery charges very very unhappy complete waste of money

Had poor quality food a few months ago but thought we'd give it another go. Chips were burnt and looked old, not to mention tasted like 'old' oil. The burgers we ordered were wrong, sauce/cheese mixed up so had to scrape out of one burger and replace with my own cheese. The burger was awful and tasted like those microwave 'rustler' burgers (not 'real' meat) not to mention the amount of gristle we found! Only had a few bites and threw it Away. Complete waste of money and will now avoid this place.

Stopped here to get some chips after being out in the cold. Lovely food and even got some sweets as well here!

What can I say this is our third trip back to enjoy the huge fresh cooked and very good quality fish and chips. For a couple with good appitite I would recommend a large chips and two large cod you will not be disappointed. Yes it takes a while but its all fresh cooked at lunchtime mid week so its worth a wait to enjoy the taste experience.If you want cheap fast food go to McD and get the same slop everytime. Treat yourself to some slow cooking and fine food at very reasonable pricesCannot wait to get back and enjoy the huge amount of beautiful fish and chips.

Food ok but service was slow. 4 people working 5 in front of us and it took 27 mins to get takeout food. This seems tardy.

Never really had an issue with this shop but the last couple times I have ordered have been awful! I understand they may be busy but waiting over 2 HOURS for a delivery is absurd! Especially when told it won't be long and no apologies are even offered and food is old and gross by the time it gets here...Customer services needs an improvement at the least!

We ordered quite a selection for a family of 7 reasonable prices £26 spent and free delivery. Delivery was just over half an hour to arrive which was good. Hot dog was at the bottom of the bag so bread was squashed (not a hot dog sausage) 2 portions of scampi were over cooked and dark and hard (photos below) chips large portions 1 large bag enough for everyone but were not the best, were barley warm and flat ( picture included). 2 battered sausages ok. Overall average, probably better not delivered but picked up.

codfathers used to be SO good but tonight had to wait 90 minutes for a delivery, not informed on initial order call there would be a delay so 2 phone calls and that 90 minutes later our meal arrived, cold. Chips unappetising and looked like reheated from lunch, scampi soggy....sorry , won't be coming back to you codfathers.

I had a chicken kebab it was really horrible rang the shop and they did not do anything I had to pay for a extra meal i told them my mum had an allergy to bbq sauce they told me it was spicy sauce

Had a large doner kebab tonight and my partner had chips cheese and beans never had anything bad from this chippy good value for money

Weekend break at Wyke Regis, Weymouth. As usual while in Weymouth we had fish and chips from codfathers in Portland, although they now have another outlet in Weymouth we always use the Portland shop as we have had such good service there we are reluctant to change. Again it was first class, really good fish and a mountain of chips. If you want great fish and chips while in the area give them a try.

If you like batter and you like burgers look no further. The battered cheeseburgers are out of this world. A reasonable price for such a lovely example of a proper chip shop burger.

Popped in on our way home to holiday accommodation. Friendly service and our meals were spot on. Fish fresh and chips were gorgeous and not greasy. We ate every last bit!

Had another weekend away in friend's flat at Wyke Regis, so used the opportunity to get fish and chips from Codfathers in Portland. Again it was first class and excellent value. Well worth the little drive. The portion size is great and the chips are the best. Also have a shop in Weymouth now so must be doing it right. Give them a try I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Beautifully battered Cod and Haddock. The nicest fish and chips I've had in a long time. Enjoyed the food with a cold beer on the tables and chairs outside.

Instead of fish we went for pies. Nice to see they appeared oven-cooked.. Very tasty filling but the pastry was too stodgy. Chips tasted better than they looked but quite a few blemishes. Medium portion was enough for 2. Pineapple fritters seemed to have lost most of the batter. Perhaps it is better to dry the rings before battering? Delivery was fast so that was very good. I would like to try the cod.

i have reviewed this chip shop before but For years we have used this chippy as it used to be the best around and nothing was nicer than getting your fish and chips and sitting at portland overlooking the sea to enjoy them.

Ordered a large lamb kebab, large chips and a big foot. Not a difficult order. 50 minutes later the order arrived, having been told "it would be with us soon". Chips were a ball of soggy mush and kebab was cold. Called up and chips and kebab was replaced so that was fine. Second lot arrived 20 minutes later kebab was absolutely fine, no issue, however the chips were stale and chewy and inedible. Called up again and was offered a 3rd portion but I refused them. Was given a credit note but we probably won't use it as been put off. We have used codfathers several times but I dont think we will be going back again.

Ordered Haddock and chips what I got was more like burnt offerings the chips were soggy and the fish though cooked to order was cremated totally will not be going there again and will not recommend this place to anyone and the girl working the till needs to learn some manners ie when asking for payment please and thank you go a long way I did not hear her say please to anyone

I visited this takeaway in 2016 and left a not very complimentary review. Here we are in 2019 and nothing has changed. The fish for what there was of it was over cooked. The lack of fish was compensated by massive amounts of soggy chips. Oh dear to make matters worse, the mushy peas as ordered had changed into curry sauce. We’ll try again in 2022.

Having arrived yesterday evening for a weeks holiday, we decided to place an order for delivery. Well, we were very disappointed with food, the fish tasted very odd, not sure why, couldn’t work out if the batter was off or it had been cooked in old fat. It was also soggy!!! The chips were also very greasy. We paid nearly £45 for the order and most of it went in the bin as you just couldn’t eat it. Won’t be eating from here again!!!!!!!!!!!! Also had a bad tummy later on in the evening........

Every time we go to our friends flat in Wyke Regis for a weekend away we always have fish and chips from codfathers. Never fails to serve good fish and chips. Its worth the few mile drive from Wyke Regis.

Today we ordered a portion of chips at approx 8.30pm! The chip portion was terrible and the contents of the portion we did get were hard cold and possibly the worst chips Iv had.. whether people walk in at 5.30pm or 8.30pm the food ordered should be fresh!

I last had good from here some time ago and it was not good. Today we decided to give it another go - unfortunately. It was the worst chips we’ve ever had. They’d obviously been sitting for some time and were very dried out and nearly cold. The fish cake was over cooked and the cod greasy. Never again!!

First time visited here, the chips were to an average standard, but the scampi was well over cooked, and not edible, won't be visiting again

Really great choice of food. All freshly cooked and worth the small wait.. Friendly staff always smiling. Have a take away maybe 2x a month and if its Fish and Chips or a really hot Veggie Pizza this is the place to go...

This was our first time my husband and had I visited this establishment where we were met by a friendly young man who greeted us with a smile as he asked us for our order. He was extremely interactive between my husband and eye and maintained eye contact through him asking what we would like. He appeared really efficient and confident at his job. He served us with such ease I had to ask him his age and how long he'd been working at the takeaway. We were totally 'gob-smacked' to find out he was only 25yrs of age and this was his 3rd shift!! We complimented him and informed his employer who was frying chips at the time; how pleased we were of this young man's excellent service and how natural he appeared when it came to taking our order and the speed of his service.

Service slow unless you want a chat. Fairly priced but agree with others fish was first class chips need some improvement. Offers children portions too.

My wife has coeliac disease and must have gluten free meals. If there is any cross contamination, she is violently sick and Ill. Codfathers have proved to be totally reliable and have provided perfect meals every time we have attended. Many restaurants have failed to provide gluten free options and have a very poor understanding of the seriousness of cross contamination, but Codfathers have proven to excel in this department. Today’s cod and chips was no different and we would highly recommend them to anyone wanting gluten free options which are reliable and safe to eat.

If you fancy fish and chips go for the fish and avoid the chips The portions were very large and soggy. We had to throw most of them away but loved the battered fish.

The service was a little slow and unclear where to stand to get in line, but otherwise this was a stand out 5* place.

Very nice fish and chips, also sell other foods. Buy your supper and drive short distance to Portland Bill and watch the sunset, perfect.

I live locally to this easily found fish and chip shop, and have visited on many occasions over the past eight years and have been well pleased with their service and food.

Codfathers is a very good place to eat. Lots of options. Lovely staff and food tastes amazing. I love this place for anything also has a mini sweet stall and a freezer with a toy vending machine.

Having been a regular at the Weymouth codfather was on Portland so thort I would try it. Great portions size excellent value for money. Friendly staff 2 very good chip shops well done

This chip shop has changed hands many times over the years so on visiting home I tried it out and wasn’t disappointed. The staff were friendly, the fish was cooked to order and along with the chips were excellent and worth the 5 minute wait.

Very easy 5 stars. Popped in today after a long day out visiting castles. You have so much to choose from something for everyone. And being coeliac i was happy to find out that they do gluten free. I had 2 gluten free sausage in batters and chips was lovely. And the owner was very nice and helpful, highly recommend.

After a long drive from Hertfordshire . We stopped at Cod father . So my son could get cod & chips . Absolutely disgusting the chips went straight into the bin and the cod wasn’t much better. If I had not been so tired I would have drove back there and demanded my money back! Do yourself a favour and give it a miss .

Had weekend away in friend's flat in Weymouth. We always go to Portland to Godfathers for there fish and chips. As usual was first class, the amount of chips in the large portion is enough for two of you. Freshly cooked fish,so a little wait but nothing excessive. Give them a try.
