been eating Pie and Mash for all of my 60+ years. Been to a few shops in my time but Cockney's in Croydon beats the lot. Great food. traditional setting and friendly staff and customers. it takes me back to my East End roots. You walk into a shop full of strangers, get a smile and excellent grub. by the time you finish eating you are in a shop wide conversation. You leave a room full of friends, feeling nicely stuffed and looking forward to your next visit.

Decent friendly pie and mash emporium serving up very good pie and mash in my opinion giving the south london top boys Arments a run for their money. Nothing not to like. Highly recommended.

eaten at the Cockneys pie & mash shop on a regular basis always had good pie & mash, I was raised on pie & mash and used to work in Kellys pie mash shop in Roman road East London when I was a kid. I have eaten at pie shops at Tooting, Brixton, The Cut, Towerbridge road and many more this has to be one of the best.

Pie and Mash is a Cockney comfort food found in East London. It is served with a green coloured parsley sauce known as liquor. As well as pie and mash, you will also find jellied eels on the menu. Most Pie and Mash shops are in East London so it was a surprise to discover Cockney's of Croydon in Croydon serving it all with jellied eels as well.Inside, I loved the style of this place with church benches, Flags and their own re-labelled Jack Daniel whisky bottles which contain vinegar.Without further ado, I ordered the pie and mash with a mug of tea. They were really nice to give me a side of jelly without eels to try.The pie was crispy with minced beef in the middle complimented nicely by the liquor.Adding vinegar to it made it moreish. The eel jelly was as good as expected and again vinegar made it delicious.Finished with a satisfying mug of hot tea.Previously tried F.Cooke in East London which is the oldest, but sadly I haven't posted anything yet so hopefully I will get the time later.

Had my double pie and mash to take away. The two pies were raw and soggy at the bottom , the so called liquor sauce tasted of water and a few sprinkles of parsley, I’m not sure if changed hands since I last visited but I certainly will not be returning!!

While wandering round Croydon I saw this place and as I’d never had chance to try pie, mash and parsley liquor I called in. Staff really friendly and the pie and mash was what I expected - superb with a splash of vinegar. I’ll certainly be back - it’s a pity there aren’t more like this left. Good honest grub with no messing about.

Probably the worst pie and mash shop ive ever visited. The mash lumpy pies where cold, very dissapointed. The place was very clean tidy and the decor was of a classic pie and mash shop, but unfortunately let down badly with the food. Really need to turn it around.

Other review is embarrassing, base is undercooked hehehe is he a northerner, should there be kidney in there, understand what you are reviewing, under seasoned, would be under seasoned if there was no vinegar salt and pepper on the table, not my favourite pie and mash but definitely up there when you need a fix, much better than all the other outer London places and better than some of the inners.

Walk-by lunch, thought I'd give the bland chain places a miss and try a proper local shop. Service was traditional and friendly, place was clean. But the food - I've not had worse in a long time. Pie was practically uncooked on the base, filling was a thin smear of mystery meat with very little taste. Mash was lumpy and tasteless. The liquor - I'll plead ignorance as to whether it was a good representation, but certainly not to my taste. Pretty much the same price as Pie Minister or similar but absolutely no comparison to the quality. I'm literally still feeling queasy a few hours later. If I had a typical experience then I have no idea where the positive reviews are coming from.

A refreshing treat to find an old school pie and mash shop that are becoming harder to find outside of London.Prices are fair and service is swift, if you double up on the pies and mash you'll be sure to leave there feeling full!Decor and atmosphere is as you'd expect and table sharing is encouraged. The only reason I haven't scored higher was due to only one pie being offered, which was minced beef, as I ate 2 pies it would have been nice to try a couple of different ones.If you're after an authentic spot of lunch, something more satisfying than subway, KFC or other fast food joints I'd recommend cockneys pie and mash

Came here after phoning to see if they do the Vegetarian pie...yes!! So. visited for lunch and they had sold my pre=ordered pie so I had to wait for another...no biggy, all is good, or so I thought!! Thet kept forgetting to cook it with lack of communication. My friends were happy to wait for their meat pies so we will all have our lunch together. So, they brought theirs over and mine still wasn't ready. When it finally arrived, the boys had nearly eaten theirs. They did take mine off the bill though. The potato was far too salty and needs less. The pie was lush and the pastry was on-point! Not sure if I would go back though??

I have visited this pie & mash shop several times over the years Back when it used to be at the lower end of crown hill to its current home in Frith Road. Everything you would expect from a pie & mash shop.Always been happy with the food although I've always found the mash here slightly disappointing compared to other shops. This was also true in Mt most recent visit for lunch in September 2015. The pie was tasty enough (though slightly underseasoned) and the liquor fine but the mash was a bit too earthy. The ambience is great and the tea good too. Eels both stewed or jellied are always spot on.Not my favourite pie and mash shop but we'll worth a visit if you're in Croydon and you want some good honest food!

Quite simply pie & mash is the food of the Gods. Forget wine or oysters or being hand fed grapes at some sort of Bacchanalian orgy, it is, always has been and always will be pie & mash. I was heartbroken when I moved away from London (it was my own choice by the way, nobody forced me too, so perhaps I shouldn't moan) and quickly realized that I would have to send the wife off to evening cookery classes to learn how to make it, after sorting the kids out, getting the house clean and walking the dog etc. Don't get me wrong, I dropped her off and picked her up, I'm not some sort of monster. None of that happened, I was just very glum about not being able to head down to Cockney's whenever I was in town.I was slightly surprised to see some people whinging that it wasn't proper pie & mash. Of course it is. This is just pure nostalgia speaking, "Everything was better in my day". Yes, I'm sure it was what with all the rationing, polio and world wars! The pies here are so good that I'm reliably informed they are being used in some of the newer pie shops that have sprung up recently. Everything about the place is brilliant, the location, the decor, the food and the atmosphere. I love the fact that you have to share your table with strangers which is such an alien thing nowadays. The old lady sitting next to me caught me reading her newspaper and politely enquired if I had finished so she could turn the page, I gave a little nod and we continued. We sat and read the entire paper together, tutting and shaking our heads at the right places. When we had finished she told me I could keep it and off she trotted. That was generous of her. Perhaps she stole it. She did look a bit shifty. Anyway, the food is brilliant and I would recommend it to anybody, particularly those of you that have never tried it before. Pies, gravy, liquor, mash potato, what's not to like? I'm amazed that it has never really taken off the way that other cuisines have because it is so simple and so utterly gorgeous. A comeback is well over due. The reason for only a 4 star rating? Well, that's because when I moved to Somerset they didn't follow me. Harsh I know, but my stars are valuable and I can't just go around handing them out willy nilly ;)

Most times I'm in Croydon I visit Cockneys. Double pie, mash and liquor does it for me. Less than £6, and fills you for hours. I like to turn my pies upside down, open the base and add salt and strong vinegar. I give it four stars only because I remember (maybe with rose tinted glasses) the Harringtons of my youth. It can get busy, so try and slide in just before or after the main lunch period. If you're feeling adventurous, try the eels, you never know, you might just like them!

We wanted to try traditional pie and mash while in London. This restaurant was close to the hotel and smelled good walking past. It's a small place, and got quite busy while we were at lunch. Odd that every other restaurant and shop was stifling hot, this one had doors and windows open on a cold and rainy day. Maybe it was to balance the heat of the food. Mash and pies were very HOT which is a good thing. Portions were large and quality very good. We didn't try the eel pies, only mincemeat. *note: mincemeat in London seems to be ground beef, rather than what I know of mincemeat (either all of the butchered pigs extras, or heavy blackstrap molasses).

Bad food. Loooong wait both for drinks and food. Waiter (owner I was told) got 2 meals wrong. Brought calamari fritti for my husband and I which he never ordered in his life and I can't stand them as they are like rubber in the UK so would never have ordered that. Waiter insisted I did, not once but 3x! My husband actually asked for whitebait! My husband ordered calf's liver as a main which is soft and succulent in France, Germany and Greec etc. It was thin and like shoe leather. It is supposed to go into a hot pan, then turned over after a few seconds and taken out of pan - served. This is what it should be like "A classic of British cooking, Calf's Liver is succulently tender and fine-grained with a deliciously mild, sweet flavour. More and more people are discovering the delicious flavour of Calf's Liver due to its place on the menus.« I took it home to give to the dog and foxes!! My friend next to me (we were 13) ordered meatballs which were so salty she couldn't eat them. Another lady didn't like how the fish was done. It was mediocre. MY mussels had anorexia. I have photos. They were non existent or if there was one in the shell, it didn't measure more than 5mm. 20 were empty and the sauce was not nice. Obvs they were not fresh mussels, they were cooked already and just heated up. Lots and lots of small broken shells in the sauce. Must have been the last dregs. Just as well I didn't swallow one of the shards. Will I go back? No, I'll go to a real Italian restaurant next time. Bragging about an Italian chef! He needs to go on a cookery course IN ITALY! I lived, ate and cooked there. I know what Italian food is supposed to taste like!!!!! And sooo expensive.

They cook the best skinless cod, away from the seaside, that can be found locally but the CHIPs!!! By the time you sit down to eat them at home, they become dry and shrivelled and there are just so many of them, that we don't have plates big enough. I recommend asking for lots of salt and vinegar in the hope the moisture sweats some plumpness into them while they are wrapped up. The Fish still wins out over the local competition, where some places are still cash only, a disgrace in this day and age.
