We usually stay much closer to Chester's city centre when visiting, but this time we opted for a spur-of-the-moment booking at The Cock O' Barton, and we're so glad we did! At just £95 for the night, including breakfast, it was great value for money, and we were not disappointed! The room was extremely comfortable, well-equipped, and located in a charming courtyard separate from the pub and restaurant, which offered a nice bit of privacy. Breakfast was a great start to the day — good quality food, with excellent, polite, and friendly service that really stood out. The easy drive to and from Chester posed no issues, adding a refreshing change to our usual city-centre stays. We highly recommend The Cock O' Barton for anyone looking for a comfortable, convenient, stay close to Chester.

It’s not often I find no faults with a place, but this one was perfect. From the second we arrived, a member of staff had just arrived for her shift, saw us at the desk waiting to check in and jumped on and served us. That is exceptional customer service. Our room was beautiful, the food was beautiful, the service is 10/10. Perfect decor and atmosphere. Toilets were even gorgeous. Love the large sinks. B&B for £90 and a top notch brekkie?? We’ll be back Thankyou

A group of six old friends enjoyed an amazing lunch today. The service was attentive and courteous even though the restaurant was quite busy. Our drinks arrived and our wine was delicious, such a great selection. We all ordered the sirloin steak most ordered medium rare, one rare and one well done (what a waste). Some with fries and some with chunky chips. All our meals arrived at the same time, all perfectly cooked as ordered. We had the best time and the last to leave. Just wanted to say well done we had the best time and we’ll definitely be back

Excellent place that caters for EVERYBODY! My 5 star review goes to the male who worked there and we got talking to. He noticed that our eldest son was autistic and came over to make sure we all felt comfortable and he explained how he knew exactly how we felt being out with an autistic child. He explained that we didn’t need to feel the pressure of making sure our son was sat perfectly by the table and as long as he was happy is all that matters. Things like this might not seem like a big deal to some but it honestly made our day and took a huge weight off our shoulders, we will definitely be returning. To top it all off too the beef dinner was delicious, the kids thoroughly enjoyed their food too.

We were staying at the nearby campsite & walked here for an evening meal. The service was great with all staff working hard & so friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious! Probably the best Sunday roast I’ve ever had. Even the veg was delicious! The mint choc cheesecake was heavenly and something we rarely see on menus! I’d return just for that! We booked very last minute on 29.6.24 and managed to get a table . The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful . The food was superb . The chips were probably the nicest chips we’ve ever eaten - proper gastro pub thick ones with salt . Lamb rump on specials was exquisite with the excellent sides . Wonderful gnocchi ( now a convert ). Fish excellent . Desserts well portioned - nicest chocolate brownie I’ve ever tasted . They forgot to bring a drink to me and gave me one on the house as an apology . Pub is also beautifully done out . Highly recommend .

We visited the Cock O Barton having driven past it a couple times while staying in the area. We're glad we did, the pub is quite modern, very clean, with friendly staff, and excellent food. We all cleared two platefuls, nothing left, and all courses were really good, recommended. Just one slight negative after we finished our mains our server seemed to disappear and we had to get up to contact another member of staff to order our desserts.

Friend and I scoped it out pre-covid while having a not such a good stay at Carden Park. We eventually managed to meet, eat and stay for a long awaited catch up. The rooms are clean, spacious, comfy and well appointed - all surrounding a courtyard with picnic tables and are all at ground level. Staff were welcoming and friendly, particularly those serving evening drinks and dinner outside. Food was ok, nothing negative just not remarkable but a good choice of menu. Breakfast choice was disappointing but this might be due to the current situation. We will stay again.I would request a room which isn’t adjacent to the outside seating/eating area as late drinkers may disturb you if you want an early night or are a light sleeper, as would the cleaner sweeping the area very early in the morning.

Having returned today from an overnight stay at the cock of Barton I write this with a heavy heart. When I booked, the man was very helpful and informative. We booked two rooms and a table for dinner having read other reviews and were eagerly looking forward to our first stay and restaurant food since covid restrictions began. We were warmly greeted at reception and all staff we encountered were helpful and polite. The bedroom was mallard across the courtyard and it was extremely clean, the bed was lovely but the pillows for us way too soft, but then you cant please us all..The drinks area by the bar was lively and well decorated. Our table was 6.30 pm and we ordered. I explained I have a shellfish allergy so ordered the steak. When it was served the waitress said the chef had cooked the chips separately which I much appreciated as a lot of restaurants leave them off if the oil has been contaminated with shellfish. The steak was 50 day aged rump priced at £23. It was the worst steak I have ever eaten being full of sinu gristle and fat and more than that tasteless. My husband confirm this. The waitress said chef agreed mine was gristly and agreed a half price refund. The squid starter apparently wasn't good either. So we ended the evening in the bar which we enjoyed.Breakfast was not great. The first coffee was served almost cold and dispute other reviews we found the vegetarian breakfast sausage awful and the scrambled egg with salmon was served without salmon. All in all, a very disappointing first outing from covid. I couldn't give more stars as honestly, the food let it all down. Perhaps we stayed on a bad night?

We have just got home from a 4 night stay at the hotel. Pre booked by phone. The hotel has a good size carpark.Nice Outside dinning , all social distance rules in place. In & outside. We had a friendly greeting, arrived an hour early & our room luckily was ready. The room is a nice size, we overlooked the car park, but the shrubs hid any noise or views of cars. We had coffee making facilities, if more is needed or any other requirements you put a card by the door & items are left in a bag outside your room. Our room, the moorhen was nice. But unfortunately as soon as we walked in we noticed a lot of markings on the wall below the bird description, and there were quite a lot of black marks & stains on the carpet, that disappointingly took the edge off the nicely designed room. Bedding was crisp white & a comfortable bed. I think it could do with a stand for your case, rather than having it on the floor or bed. Also a couple of hooks by the door for coats would be handy, in saying that there is a wardrobe with about 5 hangers. The weather was warm & other than having a window open there was not a way to cool the room...We had drinks & a meal in the restaurant, food was delicious and service was very good & all staff we’re going above and beyond. The choice of breakfast was very good. A lot of egg dishes, also they offer full English even a vegetarian full English. The breakfasts were delicious every one we had was very nice. Although we felt there were a few issues with the room ( stains) I would still recommend and definitely book again if we were to visit the area again.

We’d booked for later in the day but arrived a few hours early due to an unforeseen situation and was welcomed with friendly staff and a beautiful outside area. The staff were all super friendly and helpful, even giving us the local taxi number. We observed them being kind to all customers, children and dogs. The wine was ice cold and the outdoor seating it well spaced and clean. We moved inside for food where the servers were once again friendly and helpful. The food was delicious! We had squid and halloumi to start, nice sized portions for starters and tasty. Then we had shrimp Mac and cheese with the pretzels and pistachio rusted lamb for mains. Lovely looking, super tasty and really good sized portions. All in all a wonderful afternoon spent. Remember to tip servers well seems as they’re doing all the hard work right now.

Lovely food and extensive menu choices - we’ve been a number of times and really enjoy the atmosphere. The only issue we encountered this time was that the staff weren’t very attentive and we struggled to get any menus for a while. We also had one of their walk in customers turn up at our table whilst we were waiting for our food and ask if he could sit at our table for a drink which was a tad strange with the current coronavirus situation! Handy for Chester and a quick drive into Wales. The rooms are all on ground level in a separate building from the restaurant and bar. They surround a courtyard with outdoor tables which must be really nice in the summer. Some have spectacular countryside views, others look out into a hedge and car park. The rooms are described as having “.... expert interior flourishes ...” and, although they are nicely decorated with featured bare brick walls, they lack the little luxuries. This is partly due to Covid restrictions as extra cushions, throws and luxurious bathroom supplies have been removed. No Mini Bar or fridge, no complementary bottle of water, no smart TV (there is a Freeview TV) - two teabags for a multi night stay. Sure, you can request extra teabags and milk, and it’s delivered quickly, but it’s all a little underwhelming. It doesn’t feel generous. It was our wedding anniversary and we mentioned how much we were looking forward to celebrating there when we booked - they have a section on the booking form asking if there is anything they should know. There was a chance to have done something really special for when a new customer arrives - we weren’t expecting a free bottle of champagne but how about a welcome card? - a small touch to make the stay special? “Congratulations and please join us in the bar for a complimentary cocktail”. Perhaps we have too high expectations for customer service. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast was tasty. They were happy to add small extras to the continental version such as jam for the bread. Great coffee and juice. The restaurant is welcoming and the food was fine. People rave about the Sunday lunch - we tried the meat and vegetarian versions which were ample but I’m not sure I’d drive out of my way to eat there. It’s a lovely location surrounded by fields and certainly worth a stay to explore the area.

I was given a voucher to go here for my 30th birthday as we're staying nearby over the weekend. I appreciate that we changed the time of our original booking and brought it forwards a little but we got put on a table that felt like a bit of an after thought, right in the corner next to a column where I was facing the fire exit. We asked if we could move to a different table, which wasn't well received and I was told the other table was reserved, I asked about the other table for two and eventually we could move. Didn't really understand the issue as around us there was a table for 5 with just 2 people sat at it who had only just ordered and as we were leaving a man was sat at a large table by himself and ordered food (just for himself) and that table was free the whole time we were there! The gratin Normande was very good but everything else we ordered was just okay. Unfortunately we felt pretty ignored by the staff which made us feel worse about the whole situation. Maybe it's because we're not locals? Who knows! Wouldn't bother coming back.

Visited here after a gap of about 7 years and remembered it being so very, very good. Was really disappointed ☹️. Food generally was all overly greasy e.g. the fish batter, the chips, the bacon (almost all fat), onion rings oozed fat, even the coleslaw was very creamy/fatty and not tasty, the salad dressing oily and not tasty (how hard to make a decent salad dressing?) etc. Nobody checked on us during the meal to get feedback. Won’t be returning I am afraid.

However an oppertunity to catch up with friends and have some food was needed and I wasn't disappointed infact I was amazed, I have always expected and received the best service and best quality food from the Cob however tonight they went above and beyond, the duck bin bins are delisuous, cooked perfectly and full of flavour, the salt and pepper squid is superb, and the rump steak is quite possibly the most flavoursome steak I have ever had whilst dining out, combine this with the professional and friendly service of the staff (some of the best in this industry) and you ca not go wrong, and I still haven't had desert..... So much care has been taken to make sure customers and staff were safe. Our meal was served by delightful, friendly staff. Sunday lunch and the childrens menu were delicious - especially the strawberry and prosecco cheesecake !!!When we'd finished the meal - we were able to take our drinks down to the Private Dining room which is being used as a drinking area. I would thank you all for our take away last night (8 person order at 17.45). We live in bromborough and love dining in with yourselves - but thought we would try your take away as we were visiting family on a farm locally for an outdoor socially distanced evening meal. The professionalism on collection was brilliant. Food brought out to the little tables allowing us to get out the car and collect. Food was delicious, still warm when we got to our destination and plentiful. I wish we lived closer to take advantage of take away more often. Thanks again.Claire

called in for a bite to eat after having visited the Stretton Water Mill. Arrived just as the heavens opened and the downpour soaked everything. As we entered, the place was very busy with a wedding reception. They were still happy to have out custom. While the prices are bit more than pub food prices, the food was well worth it. Quick, friendly service and pleasant staff. My partner ordered the Calves Liver, only to be advised that is has to be served well done. WHAT! Apparently the "experts" from the Council insist liver should not be served pink - some issue with a customer who complained about getting sick 4 days after eating here. What nonsense. Interfering Council staff who seem to nothing about good cuisine. Anyway we had the fish and the hock. Really good food, well cooked and served with care. Well done to the staff and chefs.

Lovely evening at the Cock o’ Barton tonight. Slight mix up with the winter menus, I had an older version which was disappointing as the food on it sounded delicious. Either way, the food we ordered was quick and incredible! Staff were lovely as was the atmosphere. Will definitely be returning!

We came here for our ten year anniversary meal and it did not disappoint. The interior is very warm and cozy, lovely exposed beams everywhere gives a wonderful country feel. We had starters the garlic ciabatta and halloumi bites, they were delicious. For our mains we ordered the rump steak and bacon chop and the meat was very tender and juicy. Beautifully cooked and tasted amazing. The staff are friendly and the service was quick. We are definitely going to come back.

We booked this hotel as a Christmas treat and we were not disappointed. We were shown to a very comfortable, modern bedroom in the courtyard. The hotel was very busy as there was a wedding on but they had plenty of staff in the dining room and we were not kept waiting at all. All the staff were friendly and efficient and huge compliments to the chef - the food was fantastic with vegetarians and vegans well catered for. We returned home after an excellent breakfast, our only complaint was that it all seemed to be over much too quickly!

Our main courses were lovely, and filling. So we ordered a 'half cheese board' to finish. Grapes, celery, chutnies, crackers and biscuits in abundance. Cleverly concealed amongst this collection of non-cheese items were two microscopic, razor thin morsels of cheese, one Cheddar, one Brie. When paying our bill, we mentioned the obvious shaving skills of the cheese cutter and received only an assurance that the 'chef' (or Shavemeister as we shall now refer to that individual) would be informed. Quite what the Shavemeister replied we never discovered.

Visited today for a Sunday Lunch, starter was excellent, we had the soup and shrimp. Main was very disappointing, we both had the beef, it was probably the toughest piece of meet we’d had in a long time, to make it worse the Yorkshire Pudding was cold. We didn’t have the usual check from staff so did not get the opportunity to complain, we are not comfortable making public complaints, if we had been asked we’d have said. Apart from that the staff were very helpful and friendly.

I took my two kids (5 and 8) and wife out for a meal at the COB. It was an amazing evening. The service was faultless. Drinks when we wanted drinks but servers not coming over to the table all the time and harassing us. The food was absolutely delicious. The squid for a starter was amazing!!! And you have to try the cheesecake Wow!!!

Wanted to call here for a while so was pleased when my wife booked here for lunch for my 50th birthday. Lovely first impression, was met by nice informative staff and was given a choice of tables. Lovely quality seating and surroundings. Beer and food was of very good quality. We had steak sandwich and club sandwich which comes with chips and salad both very good value. Overall would recommend for a nice afternoon meal or evening meal. Pub also has accommodation which looks of good quality although I didn't see it. Will be back to try again very soon. Thanks.

Like other reviewers we were staying at Carden Park and fancied a change for dinner. This is more up market than your average pub and the prices are more akin to a restaurant. The dining room is lovely with old beams and original fire place. We found all the staff to be efficient friendly and good service. The food was good quality, we had fish and chips, very nice not too much batter on the fish and tasty tartare sauce. The gammon egg and chips was also good. All in all we had a pleasant evening but it was a similar price to eating at one of the two restaurants at Carden Park.

Drove past several times whilst staying at Carden Park and thought it looked a homely place. Decided to go for evening meal. Keely (server) was prompt and efficient. Ordered the squid and bao buns for starters - amazing! For mains, we had the crab and langoustine risotto, and the chicken Caesar salad. The risotto came with a fillet of sea bass that was cooked to perfection. The Caesar salad was tasty but the candied bacon with dill sprinkled on top was slightly odd. Desserts were a disappointment, we had the pecan pie but the tart pastry was stale and chewy not crumbly/crisp as it should be. The blueberry panna cotta was meh - nothing to sing/shout about. We left half of each dessert. Overall service, starters and mains were good.

This was recommended to us by the lad who took our archery and shooting lesson. It was a lovely little pub/restaurant. We had the bread basket to share which was absolutely gorgeous. Different array of warm bread served with hummus and balsamic vinegar/olive oil, I would definitely recommend it. My hubby had the roast chicken dinner and I opted for the steak burger which was huge, but really nice. Well worth a visit.

Booked for a night stay, upon arrival had a warm welcome and shown to our room. Room had cob webs and tooth paste splashed up the mirror in bathroom. Carpets were stained and some bulbs not working in light fitting. Explained at front desk and moved us rooms but had to wait for someone to clean our new room due to similar issues. Scatter pillows were stained. Food - again, disappointing, went for the vegan option - bland - tasteless - over priced. Breakfast wasnt much better either. Slimey mushrooms. Was offered a free bottle of wine to compensate. Aside from this all staff were friendly and welcoming however I would not recommend or be rushing back.

Party of 4 decided to take a trip out for tea. We all 4 decided on the rib eye steak which was £26 but for £13 appeared to be a good deal. When they arrived they were well presented with chips mushroom tomato and choice of peppercorn or blue cheese. sauce. We ate without complaint. However we all discussed on the way home that the rib eye appeared to be a cheap cut of meat and was extremely fatty and and that we would have sent it back to the kitchen if we had paid £26. What was a great opportunity for the Cock O Barton to showcase their steaks before Christmas turned out to be a disappointing experience. However service was efficient and attentive and the ambience is good. So give it a go but avoid the rib eye especially if it it’s in a deal.

This was our first experience at the Cock O Barton and will definitely not be the last. We thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday lunch, and were astonished at the generosity of the free children’s meal. The portion sizes were perfect and the Sunday dinner especially was so so tasty. We can’t wait to come along again and try your evening menu.

We stumbled upon this pub during a day out and decided to pop in for lunch. Surprisingly, it was quite empty, which is baffling given how tasty the food was! We opted for the tapas, and every dish was delicious. The staff were really friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. I would recommend this place based on my visit.

Have ordered from here ( delivery )for months now and food always been delicious however the past two orders have been very disappointing ( both fish ) the batter on the fish was very overcooked . Maybe new staff but not up to their usual very high standards. Will continue to order for now but if this happens again will be going elsewhere
