Good meal for family of 10 - very good value. The lovely dark haired lady who works there made us so welcome. We had a great evening and would really like to return when we are next in the area. Thank you Mary

Wanting food after long walk. Nice friendly pub with locals. Friendly and helpful landlady, who was clearly busy but in control. Food is standard pub fare but didn't have to wait long, was hot and good portions. Kindly was able to do smaller portions of regular dishes (not on kids menu) for my son, 11. He said gammon steak was juicy. He was well pleased. Again standard choice desserts were nice, with GF options. Pale ale was good too. Recommend.

This spot is perfect after a walk in the Peak District near Bakewell 👌 Home cooked food for the whole family. A lovely country pub with lots of clocks. Darts and pool table in a side room. Car park at the back. My favourite dish is the steak pie 🥧

We were out walking and spotted the pub. Saturday lunchtime, next to no one was in. Now we know why. We were greeted with a grunt and glared at for ordering a cup of tea and a soft drink. Like others we felt like we were being a nuisance..... obviously this was the miserable barmaid. It was such a shame, I'm surprised they have any customers. You couldn't pay me to go back.

The 2 stars is for the character of the pub and the location. The food is ok but the real negative is the lady that works there. We regularly visit family in the area and visited once before and found her to be abrupt & rude but as it’s convenient & such a lovely setting we decided to give it another try. She was even worse this time. She acts like you’re ruining her day by visiting. One word answers, slamming food and cutlery on the table and glaring at us if we even dared to smile at her or engage in any form of conversation. We felt really uncomfortable and unwelcome. Her attitude would be rude in any environment but particularly in a hospitality setting! Twice was most definitely enough and we won’t be going again.

What a RUDE barmaid - we were made to feel as though we were being a nuisance. She was abrasive, rude and unhelpful. She should not be there! We did tell the land lady. Which didn’t seem to surprise her! The barmaid should be sacked - pronto. It seems many other customers have had a similar experience. She ruined what should have been a lovely pub visit! I would NEVER go again and advise everyone to avoid it.

What a find! Three different meal choices, lovely gammon steak, great fish pie and steak pie crammed with melt in the mouth steak. Choice of vegetables or salad. Took time over eating and thereby managed to do justice to three wonderful puddings. Meals arrived in good time to relax and have a drink first, staff were friendly and smiled whenever eye contact was made. We will definitely be back!

If you are wanting a fancy pub with pink walls and purple furniture that serve rare breed, grass fed burgers served in a brioche bun topped with artisan cheese alongside hand cut, skin on, triple cooked chips all served on a roof slate you probably won’t like this place! If you want a proper Derbyshire pub experience with fantastic, tasty and well priced traditional pub food then I seriously recommend this pub. We will most definitely be visiting again and again! Thank you so much for a great evening…

Having read the previous reviews I think they are quite unfair so wanted to give a positive spin on this pub. This is an'old fashioned' ' no frills pub. The beer is good, the food we had was lovely and all incredibly good value and a great atmosphere, we visited on a Tuesday lunchtime. Don't expect the staff to fawn all over you but expect efficient, friendly, down to earth service. I would definitely recommend.

What a truly awful experience. Probably the worst landlady we've ever had the displeasure of coming across. The attitude was appalling, 5 of us arrived around 1:30pm, plenty of tables vacant, I asked if there was a table for 5 available, the landlady spat out a response along the lines of "No, they're for 4", I asked if it'd be ok to move a stool from one of the other many vacant tables and she literally convulsed and shouted "well then no one else can sit at that table then can they....". Wondered if this was some sort of joke, took another look at the horror behind the bar (who was spluttering obscenities and complaining non stop about the new tattoo on her back side) and decided to leave immediatly before any of us suffered any more trauma. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Having now read the reviews on here it would seem that we dodged a bullet here, ended up at Ashford in the Water just a couple of miles down the road and ate at the Bulls Head, staff were super friendly, nice atmosphere and food excellent.

A pretty pub that should be avoided at all costs! The barmaid needs to be in another job as hospitality definitely isnt her thing! Rude does not even come close. We were not greeted at all on arival. When i asked about my table the response was 'All names are on tables-just look!" I asked "Do you do Sunday lunch?" and the response was All meals are on't board.Order at 'bar..The cuttlery was slammed down on the table with the words"Thats yer starters and thats for yer mains" The food (Roast beef) had been cooked about 4 days earlier and would have challenged most cobblers. The roast potatoes were black and soft-How this is possible-I'm not sure..I can only presume most food was frozen. The yorkshire pudding was even ruined..??None of us finished and no one asked if we had enjoyed our meal or what was wrong with it. Such a shame as the pub itself is local to us and quite an embarrasment. We ended up going to The Church at Chelmorton and met some others who had experienced exactly the same thing!! I have noted that this seems to be an ongoing theme but nothing has been done to rectify the issues.

A terrible experience. We stopped for a drink mid-walk and ordered 6 pints with some water. The barmaid was the rudest person I have ever experienced and gave us the the most awful looks and slammed our drinks down. When we used the toilet she stared at us as we walked inside. It was all very confusing and felt like we had done something to upset her. We had planned to get food but chose to leave based on her behaviour towards us. What a strange experience in what could be a beautiful pub.

Told there were ‘toilets up the road’ i.e to not use their’s, and also told by the barmaid that she was ‘sick of people like us’ but was then lovely and pleasant to her regulars. We call here quite often for numerous reasons. It is a traditional British pub where the locals gather (which is always a good sign). We have always been made to feel welcome by staff and locals alike. The food is the best 'home cooked' you could wish for, and the beers are also kept in top condition. You get quite a few hikers here and plenty of muddy paws that add to its attraction. We often take family and friends here to let them experience good old-fashioned British charm, including the open fire. The menu is traditional with some vegetarian options to ensure the trip out there will satisfy everyone.

We booked the restaurant for a friend's birthday . We had a lovely walk around Ashford in the water and a drink in the local pub before setting off for our table @ 6pm . Everyone was in good spirits, looking forward to a local pub with an open fire, homecooked food, and local beers . The greeting was very frosty, boarderline agressive when we were told the table thar we requested by the fire was not the one we were sitting and were put into a side toom that was cold and lacked any atmosphere . Bar service seemed to be a struggle with locals being served first and the most unfriendly attitude when enquiring what drinks were available, near sarcasm, which was not what you would expect or had ever had before this visit. My friend went to order food for the table and asked what the sides were of which the response was ' its on the menu ' not some help and guidance on what was available . We decided that we did not want to order food and stay at the pub where we were made to feel unwelcome for a birthday celebration . The bar manager was unprofessional, lacked any social skills, and probably the worst service I have ever had . We managed to ring up book a pub , 10 minute drive " The Pack Horse" who welcomed us , talked us through the menus , offered extras not on the menu and saved the evening , a family run friendly pub we would definitely return to .

Believe it or not, this pub only dates from 1995. Step inside and you would think you were stepping back to the mid 19th century. It has an old interior, a lovely hearth and a feel of 150 years ago. The pub is frequented by the locals, mostly farmers it appeared, and was pleasant enough. A couple of real ales on tap and were nice. All in all, it was a pleasant stop off on our way to the Magpie Mine.

After reading the menu just thought it would be normal pub food but couldn’t be more wrong. The steak and ale pie is obviously home made and is so full of tasty steak ( half a cow I think ) and lovely gravy. So disappointed I couldn’t manage a desert. The following night I had the scampi again lovely and left sufficient room for the syrup sponge and glad I did.

A group of us go walking in, or around, the Peak District every Tuesday. We nearly always have lunch in a Cafe or Pub so after a couple of years we have visited many such establishments and can spot VFM and quality.

The food, service and atmosphere are really nice. The portions are substantial and great value for money. The prawn cocktail starter is a meal in itself! The main meals are not only big but good quality too. The desserts looked nice and good value at £4 each but we were all too full. Will call again.

A lovely country pub 'off the beaten track', which appears to be where the locals catch up on the news and have a chat.

when you look at a lunch menu in a country pub and the only meal that exceeds £10 is the steak, you know you have found somewhere special!

Just back from Sheldon and fell in love with this pub. Very friendly and the food was excellent. I thought that they had made a mistake with the prices it was so cheap. Great find.

Lovely quaint pub, beautiful setting and very clean. Good drink selection but would be nice to see a kopperberg etc on draft. Didn’t eat here but other people’s food looked lovely. Wasn’t the friendliest of welcomes though. Great pool and darts table Worth a drink!

Called here today (lunchtime not pre-booked) as I was born in Youlgrave which is a few miles away. It was a very hot summers day and we were tired and hungry. The Cock and Pullet ticked every box, it is an absolute gem. Fantastic village setting, excellent food (try the local sausages and if you have a pudding go for the treacle sponge)) and well kept beer. Very good service, not expensive and friendly informative staff. What else could you want? I did not want to leave.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!
