We had the pancakes & porridge for breakfast, delicious! Croissant was light and fresh. Good coffee. Cute café!

Yup bit of a weird one. The food and drinks here are really good quality. The speed of service and general vibe not so much. If you are happy with a 'go slow' kinda place then worth checking out.

Bloody cold room. Otherwise delicious everything. A bit slow and chilled toast wasn't ideal. But my God, cafe work at breakfast is nearly impossible.

A great, laidback breakfast. Baked goods were amazing, as was the Scottish breakfast.

Sausage roll. The bread was so tough I couldn't eat it. The toilet was dirty.

Waitress forgot to process my order, so I waited ages for the food. Fry-ip and coffee was £16 and everything was basic. Found out later that I also got double charged for my drink (that was separate to the £16 as I had to wait longer for my food).

Kind staff, lovely atmosphere and a ginger shot, that gives you a real boost!

Such a cute cafe! They even had a vegan full breakfast for my vegan friend. I had the full breakfast that was delicious! Great coffee and tea options, too. Very peaceful place!

Disappointing experience overall, service was very slow despite 5 other tables that arrived after us, all getting their food before us. We didn’t get an apology, just a slightly sassy comment about it being busy. Not sure why it was so difficult to muster up plain poached eggs on toast to meet a dietary requirement. Very disappointing as my previous visit was good.

We ordered coffee and breakfast. The portions were tiny for the price we had to pay. The café wasn‘t busy at all and it took a long time before our food came. Felt like the staff was inexperienced.

Great address just a stone's throw from Haymarket... open on Sundays, that could be useful! The scones are excellent despite a small downside for the one this morning, which didn't seem fresh... but I'm delighted! I recommend

Choosing this place for breakfast was a mistake. The coffee is ok, the atmosphere is quite good, but I would not recommend ordering food. I had a fry up and it was awful. And it was more expensive than the other better cafes on the same street a few doors over. I wish someone would have told me, but you win some and you lose some (this was a underwhelming loss).

Nice place and friendly staff but full breakfast was so so. Good sized portion and nice sourdough bread but fried eggs overcooked so yolks were rock hard and sausages were so undercooked they were almost raw and inedible.

Their yoghurt bowl was beautiful and absolutely delicious. Also had great homemade juices.

Had a fabulous breakfast here. What a spot! Coffee was solid, decor is amazing. It’s the kind of cafe you’ve been looking for if you are Australian and experienced in the cafe world.

Didn't want to eat in our hotel and found this cafe close to Haymarket tram stop. Good selection of breafast items, loved it and went back the next day. Porridge with fruit was excellent. Croissants yummy and bacon roll very good.

Appalling staff who couldn’t even basic orders right. Happy to take your money and not bring your food. Even bringing milk and butter seems a chore and an effort. Absolutely pathetic business

This is a cafe that cares more about money than customer service. There were very few customers but our party had to wait so long for our food that one person requested a refund. Those of us who were (eventually) served received over-cooked, yet somehow barely warm food, missing components and, inexplicably, salad (!) with vinaigrette dressing on the side of a full breakfast! When asked to replace the missing elements of our orders we were questioned as to whether we had paid for what we were claiming was missing. Even when presented with Apple Pay transactions confirming the amounts paid, the staff continued to dispute what was being requested; we’re talking about a pot of tea in one instance, which amounted to a single tea bag in a tea-pot of hot water, for which £3.10p was paid, but it felt like we were asking for a free steak dinner! Even a basic level of customer service would have resulted in just one staff member saying “It’s one tea bag and some water, I’ll replace it no problem.” It would have been understandable - to a degree - if the staff were rushed off their feet but there were barely any other customers in the cafe at the time our group were being served. So there are no excuses and it was sheer incompetence all round. We definitely won’t be back and I would urge anyone else not to bother!

We came in during the busiest times and had issues with our order, no cutlery on the table and had to ask twice for the table to be cleaned from the previous visitors. We had to wait quite a lot for the food to arrive for everyone. The food and coffee though were definitely 5/5 so during a quieter times it may be a great place to visit. I think the place would benefit from extra staff so that they operate smoothly during peak hours as well.

Unfortunately not a great experience: we ordered a Scottish breakfast and the portions were tiny, staff wasn’t very friendly and the table was dirty and sticky. We also had some pastries which weren’t fresh. Not recommended.

The food was very average. Unfortunately, the sandwiches looked pretty bad. :/ the eggs benedict with salmon was ok, but you could smell the vinegar added to the cooking. Prices too high for the quality. We were also there right after it opened, but unfortunately the bathroom wasn't very clean. On the plus side, very nice service.

Good food but in the disabled toilet the red cord was wrapped around the handles. It needs to be able to touch the floor incase someone falls and hurts themself. This is a life line for disabled people.

Had poached eggs with hollandaise and smoked salmon. It seemed like a small portion but it was the perfect size for Me to not feel too full or still hungry. Cappuccino was great! Had a great balance of coffee and oat milk. Would totally recommend :)

Come here a few days ago. A little bit expensive for what you get on my opinion for being in Edinburgh. Service amazing, venue full of people but still food and coffee serve in 5-7 minutes. Coffee taste really burn, not the best one I ever had. The only available table was against a wall so I can say that I did not enjoy much the view and the atmosphere was a bit ruined thanks to that. Everything else was super.

Locale molto carino, rilassante e con ottima musica di sottofondo, dove ho fatto colazione più volte. Hanno una buona selezione di bevande (te’, caffè, cappuccino….) tutte ottime e ottimi dolci. Stupendi i cornetti ripieni di cioccolato caldo.Personale molto cordiale e gentile. Lo consiglio.

One of the best breakfasts I had on a long weekend which includes eating at the ivy and dishoom. Value for money, fresh produce and delicious. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Truely a special little place! Great atmosphere, great service and great food, including vegan options! All in all just positive vibes and definitely worth stopping by. We had to come again the next day to enjoy again before leaving the city.

Chill atmosphere. Not too busy on either of my visits mid morning and late afternoon. Received food quickly and it was delicious! Would recommend to anyone.

Found this place after searching for cafes that did gluten free options for myself and my husband. We took a walk here from the hotel that we were staying in which took us approx 1 hour to get there. Which was not a problem at all as we were looking forward to our breakfast. When we walked in we were greeted and asked if we would like a menu. My husband asked if they had gluten free options to which the man behind the counter bluntly said no and then sniggered at us. I then turned round and walked straight back out again. Why on earth in this day and age would an eating establishment not cater for an allergy is beyond me.

Very handily placed in Haymarket area, we got a lovely table and staff moved a couple of extra seats to accommodate our party of 6, plus very well-behaved dog. Coffees were excellent and beautifully presented, and between us we had the pancakes with bacon & maple syrup, full English, Vegan full English & sausage bun. All were absolutely top notch. Service was quick, warm, friendly and attentive. We'll definitely come back.

The smoked salmon breakfast was very good, highly recommended. Cappuccino was good.

Nice place with good customer service, large menu with good options if you don’t eat meat and great portions, especially the vegan breakfast ! The beverages (espresso and cappuccino) were a bit strong but I guess some people like it this way. I’d recommend having breakfast here 😁

Tastiest vegan breakfast in Edinburgh IMHO. I regularly fast & regularly break my fast here. Great, friendly team too. Best place in/around Haymarket station by far.

Excitingly, the vegan full breakfast contained much more than the usual suspects, with the sweet beetroot chutney stuff being a particularly excellent addition. The double toasted almond croissant is also a bit of a dream. The coffee is always good, the staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is cosy and relaxed. WiFi is not great though and there's not much phone signal inside. Super handy for trains and trams.

I had lunch here with a friend. They work near HayMarket and we wanted a light lunch option within walking distance so they could get back to work. This is a nice small cafe -we had the soup and it was excellent - hot and well flavoured. The coffees were good too. We were in and out in a lunch-hour and this is a nice option for lunch in that area. Good lunch option.

Warm; spacious; tastefully appointed. The staff are professional and polite. I had the Turkish Eggs. Wonderful value for money. I note the high quality of the coffee as well. Splendid.

My partner and I stopped here for brunch today. The whole experience was incredibly pleasant, from the setting with nice lighting, ornate features and atmosphere, to the food which was perfectly prepared and well presented. We ordered brunch items, which were delicious and good value. In addition, the coffee was great and complete with great latte art. Fine wee spot in Haymarket. Highly recommended.

Sausages barely cooked when I asked if they could cook them so they were browned they made out like it was a massive deal so I just didn’t bother eating them. Beans looked like they were cooked in water. Would not recommend

This has quickly become my go-to cafe in the area for a sit-down (or takeaway!) coffee. Lovely atmosphere, good food and the staff are great. Awesome place to sit for half an hour with a coffee, a sandwich and a book!

Wir wollten ein Englisches Frühstück. Wir haben dann dieses tolle Café gefunden. Alle sind sehr lieb. Das Frühstück war mehr als lecker, so auch der Kaffee. Auch kostenloses WLAN wird angeboten. Wie können dieses Café zu 100 %empfehlen. Und werden gerne beim nächsten Urlaub vorbei schauen.

Myself and my partner stayed in a hotel just up the road from Coates Café and it was a really great place to start our day. When we first visited, the experience was so easy going. You enter the café and head straight to the counter, immediately you are greeted with a pleasant welcome and a warm smile, even with the café being busy for morning service, and you are handed menus and given plenty of time to order as you go back to the counter when you are ready to do so. The food itself was very tasty, we both had the full breakfast and the value you get for your money is definitely worth it. I also sampled the poached eggs hollandaise with the bacon, black pudding and avocado one morning (if you are wanting something filling that is not quite as big as a full breakfast, I highly recommend). There are also plenty of drinks selections, from juices to teas and coffee's and although we did not have any, the freshly made pastries looked and smelled wonderful. Not so much negatives, but just a few things noted from our visit, the café could definitely look at installing an additional toilet facility. Whilst it did not smell unpleasant, having three tables close to the only toilet in the café is not going to be everyone's cup of tea (excuse the pun). On one occasion a family with a new born baby ended up sitting next to the toilet and using it for a good 30-45 minutes which ended up creating a queue of people waiting to use it, one being my partner. Thankfully we were only up the road but she had to leave the café to go back to the hotel just to be able to use a toilet. Additionally, just a little tip for people visiting. If you love tea then you'll have no problem at all with this, however, when you order the breakfast tea, this comes in a tea pot (not evidently clear on the menu itself) and myself and my partner made the mistake of ordering a tea each and ended up with a serving of tea suitable for a table of four! So if you both want tea, think about ordering one tea at a time and sharing. Overall I would recommend paying Coates Cafe a visit if you are staying in the Haymarket area. A lovely atmosphere to start the day and plenty of time to order and enjoy your food and you won't ever feel like you're over staying your welcome! :)

I'm staying in Edinburgh for 3 nights, I had a full English here yesterday and returned again today, absolutely delicious would definitely recommend, I will be going back again tomorrow.

Allereerst: heb je haast? Vergeet deze tent! Wij hebben hier 2 keer een prima ontbijt gehad en daar een uur voor uitgetrokken. De menukaart gaat van klassieke Engelse ontbijten tot veggie en vega. Prima koffies. Het jonge enthousiaste team werkt hard maar de organisatie is chaotisch (tip: ga eens kijken bij de buren van Pizzologist).

Food is delicious!! We were randomly walking nearby, came for some chickpea pancakes and poaches eggs, everything was super delicious. Atmosphere is beautiful, they put a lot of effort to make it look pretty. The people are also really nice.

Great buzzing early morning atmosphere. Delightful staff. We had pancakes and filled breakfast roll. Proportions were generous. Sadly the roll looked like it should have been delicious but tasted like it had been too long in the microwave so was rubbery dry not tasty. Guess I should have said something to give them a chance but I left it too late.

Genuinely the worst fry I've ever eaten... Anemic sausages, withered mushrooms, and mushy black pudding swimming in a soup of bean juice and mushroom water... but a bit of lettuce thrown on the side to call it a "gourmet fry". All served lukewarm. No wonder they make you pay before you order the food.

You have try this lovely cafe near Haymarket in Edinburgh. I had Turkish eggs with yoghurt and a slice of sourdough bread. Simply delicious! However, the food was not easy to eat, firstly because there was a dearth of spoons and secondly because it was served on a plate instead of a bowl, meaning that the runny egg yolk and yoghurt had to be chased around the plate and I could not dip my bread into the mixture. Would have given 5 stars but for that. Orange juice was fresh and the coffee was good.
