Went here with a few friends for a good catchup. We lucked out and got the tucked away booth which was perfect. Great cocktails and delicious food. Everything was delicious, especially the potted beef and pulled rabbit. Absolutely recommend.

Love the interior so the staff attitude and competency is such a shame. And freebies do not make it ok

My by found this wonderful eaterie on line before our recent trip to London and loved the concept. We were greeted and taken to a high table for cocktails and sharing plates of excellent food. Bigger than tapas, Italian-influenced, exquisitely prepared and beautifully presented the eating experience was amazing. Intimate and quirky in the basement, the restaurant offered a great venue for date-night or evening with friends. Our 'waiter' was the perfect host, making informed recommendations for both food and drinks. We'll definitely revisit.

Me gustaría volver!

Went to the Coal Vaults after a recommendation. We booked a table and we pleased to find we'd been reserved a private booth. The general atmosphere of the place was busy and quite loud. Cocktails were tasty - although be warned some were very strong! Tasty small dishes were great for sharing. My favourites were the scallops and white asparagus and the pig treacle. The chips were also some of the best I've had. All in all a good evening apart from fairly slow service. The food came quickly once ordered but drinks service was very slow. We also had difficulty attracting the attention of our server once we had ordered. Despite the slow service I would go again.

The idea is a good one: small dishes, a little larger than tapas, made for sharing. The cooking was excellent and the dishes well-judged; the smoked duck and the sea-bass, in particular, were outstanding. Service was friendly, if a little slow. My only reservations were the premises and the service-charge. The premises consist, as the name suggests, of a large cellar, which is somewhat claustrophobic and, because of the hard surfaces, noisy; if the restaurant does as well as it deserves, some investment in redecoration and the advice of an acoustic engineer would promote a better ambience. The service-charge was included in the bill at 12.5%; perhaps that's normal in London now, but I prefer to tip at my discretion. However, the £40 a head, including drinks and service-charge, which we paid seemed to us, given the quality of the food, good value.

No cloak room or wall hooks is a poor idea when you are seating people a bar height tables on barstools. By the time we had hung our stuff under the table there was nowhere for our legs to go. The first cocktail was made with poor quality tequila thus negating any other attempt at it being decent. I hate eating on stools but that is the concept so take it or leave it. If i do eat on a stool though it would be better if it wasn't like riding a buckaroo in a sea storm. The food was not good. The rabbit was cremated, i couldn't really make out the rest of the ingredients from the Hitchcock prison bulb above our table but it was under seasoned and bland and the spice in the sweet corn couldn't mask the fact. The chanterelles were so under cleaned it was like eating sandy seaweed on some soggy toast. It was inedible. The langoustine, crayfish mousse thingy was by far the best dish of the night. Interesting, well presented, a couple of nice surprises but it was not enough to rescue the train crash that preceded it. It was £94 i could have spent in a far more productive fashion (we had 4 glasses of sparkling wine and 3 cocktails). It would be bordering on value for money if the food was any good.

I love this restaurant so much I've been twice in just a few weeks. It's true that the portions are not massive, but this is explained when you order from the menu, it's more of a sharing concept. The pulled rabbit and smoked duck dishes are outstanding, and the only dish I wasn't too impressed by was the chanterelles, which were just OK. The cocktails are delicious (try the Domestic Bliss) and the staff are knowledgeable and attentive. It's easy to let the bill stack up, so keep an eye on that. Both times I have visited have been weekend nights, and the atmosphere has been great - buzzy without being overwhelming.

Went here with family and friends, this is certainly a lovely place to visit with friends. Went here before going to the theatre. Good wine and excellent food but a little pricey for what you get. We had the Pig Treacle and picked Fennel tops on chestnut toast. Beetroot, Kohlrabi, horseradish & sorrel salad with white port & blood orange dressing. These really are starters and not big at all while their sounds like a lot of ingredients these are small portions. Then we had Pickled Walnut, William pear and Gorgonzola, my favourite very tasty, then we had charred purple sprouting broccoli and Ogleshield, coolea and Kirkhams fondue, fantastic could of done with more broccoli could of eaten this all night. Then we had Pulled rabbit with smoked black beans, sweet corn and Pineapple relish, avocado sour cream and flat bread. Also very nice. Also had the Henri Winterman smoked duck breast, sherry pickled rhubarb and bone marrow and walnut mash. While all these are very tasty, with all the ingredients on these menus the portions are small and you sometimes wonder where all the ingredients are on the plate. Would go again though as its a very nice place to be and the food is very tasty.

I really loved the staff and wanted to like the place more than I did. Truth told, some of the drinks and food were exceptional, but it was a little inconsistent. I think it is a place you need to go to more often and decide which the best things are to drink and eat. Would go again.

This really is an underground hidden gem. Once I pulled back the heavy black curtains revealing the restaurant it immediately stuck me as the perfect spot to have an awesome New Years Eve dinner experience with my boyfriend. Since it was just Jeff and I we were reserved a table right in the middle, infront of the nice looking bar. There are also great private tables tucked away along the walls like a cave, very cool for larger groups. I am a vegetarian and Jeff is not so I was happy to see that there were a ridiculously creative set menus for both of us, every dish paired with difference cocktail...incredible. Each dish was full of flavour and very unique cobinations of ingredients, cudos to the chef. The staff were also adorably sweet and made for a great news years eve. Looking forward to our next visit!

I was surprised to see other reviews criticising the service as the staff who took care of us in December '13 were excellent. They were helpful to suggest how many dishes we should order and very attentive to ensure we had plenty of drinks throughout our visit.I can highly recommend the pig cheeks and pulled rabbit dishes - really very good indeed! The cocktails are all rather modern, so if you a plain cosmo drinker you're not going to see any of the usual classics here. Some were lovely and some were less appetising, but that's the fun of a cocktail list! The real quirk of this venue is, of course, the fact that it is set in old coal vaults. Hardly noticeable from the main street, the vaults extend below the main road above you and you can find some great little corners to huddle in for a drink. If you want somewhere new to try for a small group of friends, then this would certainly be somewhere to go.

Interesting place with very cool decor and nice low light ambience. The toilets are also cool with the floor completely covered in pennies. The food was very good albeit a bit overpriced and not exactly easily shareable tapas. The cocktails were interesting and different but none were long and at about £9 a drink, it gets expensive quickly. The most disappointing was the service with long waits to get drinks, forgotten orders and incorrect dishes (and we were the only table that night).I'd say only come here on a night that they have a discount and hope for better service (it is newly opened so hopefully theklinks will be ironed out)

My friend and I found this great place through Top Table. We were drawn in by the temptation of small plates and cocktails. We had a fantastic night in an atmospheric bar with the most delicious and creative cocktails and amazing food - pigs cheeks and pulled rabbit recommended. The staff were the best and really went out their way to make sure we had a great night. We would recommend Coal Vaults to anyone visiting London and will definitely be back. Thank you.

My girlfriends and I met at Coal Vaults in mid-November 2013 for cocktails and food. Upon arriving, we noticed that the lights were out on the top floor, and we had to carefully walk down the completely dark steps to make it to the restaurant and bar area. Given that this restaurant recently opened, we didn't think much of it and quickly informed an employee that the lights were not working. When our friend arrived a few minutes later, the lights were back on.We ordered a round of drinks, and this is where the disjointed service began. One of my friends received her drink first, I received mine about five minutes later, and my other friend just sat and sat waiting for her drink. Forget about having a toast here - it appears that they make drinks in batches for different tables, instead of preparing all of the drinks at the same time for each table. Your ice will melt before a proper toast can commence. Finally, our server informed us that the liquor had not been fused for the final drink, and we would have to wait 20 minutes for the "infusing" to occur. My friend quickly ordered another drink, but it was ridiculous that she had to wait at least 20 minutes to have a cocktail after our drinks arrived. Despite the poor drinks service, the drinks were tasty once they were delivered. For our second round, one of my friends received her drink, and we noticed that they gave her the wrong drink. The server came around again, apologized for the mistake, and then just took the drink off our table and gave it to the table behind us (thank goodness my friend had not had a sip of the drink!). So then we had to wait... again.... for all of our cocktails to arrive at different times. The food was pretty good and quickly arrived at our table. The venison sliders, bombay chips, and mushroom ragu were quite tasty, and the popcorn snack was also delicious. The baby beetroot salad left a bit to be desired.Although our server was quite pleasant and friendly, she was difficult to track down to obtain the bill due to the crowded room. To our shock, another staff employee (the same individual whom we told about the lights), suddenly showed up at our table and said we needed to leave NOW because the table was needed for another group. Ummmm..... how about asking us to leave a little more politely the next time? If he had asked us to leave once before, we could have understood why he was being so blunt, but there was no need for his harsh request (especially given the long delays we repeatedly faced with our cocktail service). We tracked down our server and quickly left after that.Given that this is a new restaurant, I think that the slow drinks service and lights issue will be worked out over time. Hopefully, the frazzled mood by certain staff members will be worked out as well.

Huzzah.

It doesn't look much from the outside but it's value all the way when you are in! I don't know what he'll do when the station is finished, there's a constant stream of blokes from there. Banging breakfast and excellent value, just what you want when you see what most hotels offer these days. Spot on caff.
