Coach and Horses Pub in Hackney

Since having new owners and a refurb, The Coach and Horses in Stoke Newington is now hands-down one of the best pubs in the area and an absolute must-visit for anyone who appreciates a proper pint in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. From the moment you step inside, you can tell this is a place that truly cares about quality – especially when it comes to drinks. The selection is top-notch. Particular credit goes to their choices from Pressure Drop and Deya. Whether you're after something crisp and sessionable or a bold, juicy IPA, there's always something exciting on tap. Beyond the stellar beer, what really sets The Coach and Horses apart is the vibe – friendly, relaxed, and full of character. Much of that is thanks to Mark, the manager, who is clearly passionate about what he does. Mark runs the place with the perfect balance of professionalism and charm – always up for a chat, genuinely welcoming, and clearly committed to making everyone feel at home. You get the sense that he’s curated not just a drinks list, but a community. In short: great pub, amazing beer, and an even better team. The Coach and Horses is a local treasure – long may it thrive!

Always a good pub, it's now great since it's refurbishment. If you like local history then you will find the adverts on the wall from the 1880s that were recently rediscovered absolutely fascinating. Lots of great historical Stoke Newington photos too. Well worth a visit. £5.50 for a pint of Five Points IPA these days is good value for money in London. No food currently as the chef is on parental leave. No cash - electronic payments only.

Edited for April 2025 - Thankfully, now reopened after a three month refurbishment. Apart from the beautiful leather banquette seating around the walls, not much has changed so no idea why it was shut for so long. A lot of the woodwork is new, rough and unsanded so don't wear any delicate clothing. Beers good value for the area, tried the triple cooked chips for £5 - a silly amount for a small bowl. Just basic fries with the worst ketchup I have ever had - sweet and sugary! No idea what they were thinking. Will avoid the food in future because this always was a pub for drinkers. Adrian may need to get more hands again on and stop with the inexperienced managers. Still the best pub in the area. Like their sister pub in Highbury (the now way too popular, Bank) - no bookings and no under 21s. Bliss!

I can't remember the last time I suggested visiting the C&H twice in a week but I did this week and both times were good. Under the new management there are no dramatic changes but those that there are, seem to have been carefully thought through, especially the short and delicious menu. The staff are knowledgeable and nice.

This is a beautifully restored ancient pub in the heart of Stoke Newington. There's a good selection of drafts including a German Pilsner. The staff is attentive and friendly. Offering water for our doggo without us having to ask. 👏👏👏🐶 I like the fact that we could still order chips until fairly late. 🍟

New management has truly changed Stoke Newington for the better, and I've been coming here for 25+ years. DJs and soon live music, great new clientele!! I do miss the Thai food but the pizza we had blew our minds! Go and enjoy the new Coach!

Lovely local pub, enjoy the slightly less raucous vibe than other locals. Good beers too, although seems to be a temporary issue with stocking certain lagers

🚇 Stoke Newington 🍺 £5.85 Staropramen The Coach & Horses is located on busy Stoke Newington High Street close to the junction with Church Street. The nearest station is Stoke Newington overground, it’s a five minute walk to get here. Originally a Coach House dating from the 1700′s, this pub was constructed in 1829 making this is one of the oldest remaining public houses in Hackney. This former Charrington’s pub has some sentimental value attached. My Dad used to drink here in the 1970’s, he used to visit on his day off from running the now demolished Kings Arms (18’s) which was located near Dalston Junction. This is a bright and airy one bar pub that is traditionally decorated with some vibrant touches. The servery is located on the right hand side and is painted bright red. I especially loved the look of the back bar with the white band across to top. The seating is plentiful with an eclectic mix of different types and styles. The green painted walls are a combination of brick and wood panels, adorning them are a who’s who of music icons. The beer line up was solid and offers a choice of cask ales, London craft and mainstream heavyweights. I decided on a Staropramen, my pint was top notch, price point was below average. The food offering is Sourdough Pizza, most pizzas cost around £12. I arrived on an overcast Saturday afternoon in June. The pub was fairly busy with a few local punters dotted about. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed with a welcoming local pub feel. I had a nice chat with the Guv’nor who told me all about this historic pub and how he is engaging the community. The “What’s On” board is full of events to keep you entertained. There are quiz nights, live music and DJ nights, check socials for details. This was a thoroughly enjoyable visit to The @coachandhorsesstokey . This is an historic local pub that offers a great all round pub experience. Very hard to find a crisp pint that does go flat after two minutes. I think the Moretti I had today was the best pint I’ve had in maybe 2 years. Highly recommend. Reasonable price too. Ellie who served me was lovely too :)

Great little pub playing seriously good music. Decent people watching outside in Summer and a cracking atmosphere inside in winter. Staff are all very nice and the landlord Toby is a top bloke. Recently tried the food and for a tenner you really can't go wrong. Who doesn't love a bowl of chilli with a pint??

Wow! The Coach & Horses has been under new management since the latter part of last year and the pub has changed so much... for the better! We last went on a night when a vinyl DJ was playing Dub and Reggae. The place was really busy, great atmosphere, really friendly manager, staff and pub goers. Visited again for Sunday Roast (delicious!) and saw there was a lovely Mexican inspired menu, too. We'll definitely be back!

I’m giving this a 3 because I’ve had a great burger in there (the smash burger) which used to be on offer, 2 for 1 about 6 months ago. THEN it was superb, but somethings changed. We went back last week and ordered the same and it was honestly one of the worst burgers we’ve had. Big chunky dry burger, and almost stale buns which huge slab slices of tomato. I don’t even need a photo, you can picture the burger! Hopefully it gets back to what it was! Staff are great though - super friendly. Just the kitchen needs to get better 👍

Came in on Sunday evening in need of a Sunday roast and fee drinks. Most of the pubs on this high street are loud and large. Coach and Horses, however is the perfect pub if you're looking for a cosier boutique place to have a pint or a cocktail. The roast was up to standard and satisfied our hungry stomachs. Dog friendly pub. Nice and fun deco. Clean toilets. Pleasant service. Will return when back in the area.

It’s 8:15pm on Friday evening and the young lady behind the bar is one of the kindest bartenders I’ve met in a long time. Customer service goes along way and it’s my first time in my new local pub. Because of how friendly and welcoming she has been it created a really nice feeling. Also the locals I met were super sweet with their dog Archie. I’d definitely love to come back!

Came here for a quick drink. The Prosecco was filled to the top the staff were friendly and approachable and the vibe was chilled.

A group of us, who were all born and bred in Stoke Newington met for a meal for a birthday and went to the Coach and Horses after the meal for a drink. The coach and horses used to be one of our local pubs, service was horrendous, women serving behind the bar was incredibly rude to the birthday girl, looked like she was thoroughly annoyed that we were asking her for a drink, I spoke to the woman in question, and she offered no apology, the hospitality business is supposed to be with a smile and a welcome, and this is not what we got at the Coach and Horses? very disappointed and we certainly will not be returning and I would advise anybody who used to drink in the Coach and Horses not to drink on these premises again, as it will ruin your memories

Terrible service from girl with glasses and tattoos. Paid £5.65 for a Guinness and she poured the pint to the top within seconds. I did ask her to stop and wait and then got body language attitude. Then she very poorly topped off the pint and when I asked her to top up got more of a huff. Seriously lacking in customer service skill and knowledge of the basics of how to pour a pint. Bonkers that she is employed as bar staff (doesn't seem to have the first clue or interest), but maybe C&H should have trained her better. Won't be visiting again.

Sorry but who considers this acceptable for 'vegan loaded fries'. Huge fried chunks of unseasoned flavourless tofu on a bed of fries with some nacho cheese and a bunch of jalapenos on top. Certified gross. Otherwise a pretty nice pub.

Appalled at the attitude of staff. Came as a family of 7, while it was very quiet, paid 100 quid. Only given 2 menus and told not to touch the un-used menus on other tables. To take a family photo, I placed a full glass of wine on a shelf, but the shelf was broken so the glass fell. Rather than replacing it, let alone offering any sympathy, and helping clear up (which I had to do in the first instance myself ) I was told it was my fault, that I should not use any of the furniture other our tiny table. 'You shouldn't be touching that' and 'This is your table', ie not the shelf right next to it. When I said that didn't seem to be appropriate customer service, I was told 'I won't be threatened by you'. Food also took 30 minutes. Pretty miserable experience

Stopped here for a few drinks. Plenty of seats and beautiful decor. Knowledgeable and friendly staff who gave us some beer recommendations. Reasonable prices (pints under £4.5) and a spotlessly clean pub and toilets. They have a good thai food menu, which we didn't try as we'd already eaten. Very good atmosphere, vibrant and lively. Recommend if you're in the area.

Haven’t lived in Stokie for over 4 years, but been here twice recently. The staff are so completely lovely, helpful, polite, and it’s so refreshing. Wish I had a local like this in Chingford!!!

Had a meal and two drinks with friends, the music was vibes, not too loud. The barman was really friendly, the Thai lady serving the food even friendlier. Cannot see the kitchen but the food tasted nice (massaman curry).

Nice and cozy, get there early on the weekends is there's a few of you because the space is pretty limited on there and it packs out quick. Shows some football sometimes and does great Thai food. The payment systems a little inconvenient having a £10 min spend on card but food is cash only and a separate entity entielry to drinks but not too much of an issue really. Good ambiance, friendly helpful staff, little more on the pricy side for booze but not too bad.

An old favourite. This place has been around for a while. It is cosy and comfortable and not trying too hard. It's a pub that plays slightly cheesy but good music, serves nice drinks at fairly reasonable prices, and has that smell of a pub that's seen other places come and go. Haven't tried the food.

Really nice and small pub. Getting a wheelchair in over the step was a bit of a nightmare but plenty of room too move around and the ability to use the normal toilets. Didn't have anything to eat however plenty of other patrons were and the Thai food smelt divine! Will definitely go back so long as friends are with me to get the wheelchair over the front step!

Food is amazing, best Thai food we've had in London. Lovely staff and good prices for alcohol. Pints under £4.50! Food is cash only and the bar takes both so make sure you bring cash for food if you're eating. Cash machine across the road.

Been my local for more than a decade but tonight was a major letdown when a group of guys were a little loud and could have been spoken to in a quiet manner to cease it a bit. Instead the blonde barmaid refused to serve them any more. A discussion followed where many others felt the need to leave. The situ could have been dealt with in a lot better ways, but what was really daft was that the blond bar maid was laughing them out while a few of the group were leaving. Dear pub mgr do not let her be in charge any more as it could have gone very very wrong. The lads were ok, and no I do not know them, and they should not have treated as such, a quiet word would have sorted this in two ticks..... One more thing the Thai food was a letdown tonight as well, different cook(s)?

Cosy pub where you can watch premier League games.

Food is nice, nothing special. Main problem is that bar and food are a separate. Every time we go there we have a problem with the bill. Haven't been for about a year hoping it had changed but it hasn't. Won't be going again and definitely will not recommended.

Used to be my local for nearly two years.On this occasion, I popped in for a quick pint and I was greeted by a very insistant mouse who clearly was feeling quite at home. Apart from spurs beating Brighton on the night, nothing else positive from this visit to the coach and horses.

I give 2 stars for this thai restaurant for the food. The place is dark you need to used your phone torch so you can see whats on the menu. Its not supposed to be a restaurant its because of the darkness . Lastly before you start drink or eat check the glass ,and the plate some of it is not wash properly i have my glass and full of lipstick. Ps. I am not the only one who used the torch while im looking at the menu ..

I has a meal here and found the fishcakes awful. They were rubbery, very greasy and bland. The squid was a little better. Be aware that the kitchen does not take cards. The bar itself is lovely with very friendly bar staff.

Met up in the Coach and horses with a great friend. We use to come to the Coach over 14 years ago and knew the previous family who ran this pub.We knew the Mother and Daughters and it was s lovely traditional pub. Today it still had a good atmosphere where you can pop in for a quick drink or to meet or eat. The lighting is very low but it is intimate and a relaxed friendly environment. Am glad it's not lost its charm. The Thai food is fantastic. I enjoyed every bit and so you won't be disappointed with the lovely service. Look forward to visiting again.
