Great place for lunch time with the family. We all devoured our meals after a nice walk at Great Barnet Woods and were well pleased with the excellent value for money . Nice log fire in the hearth and dogs were welcomed. Very nice for passing through Chepstow.

We arrived on Thursday, Oct 17, 2024 rather late - around 8 pm'ish and were greeted warmly by bar staff, who showed us to our room, made sure our breakfast order was placed, and answered any questions we had. They don't serve dinner, so we stepped out and grabbed a quick bite to eat. Back at the Pub, we enjoyed a pint of local brew and chatted with a local and the bar staff, who were very eager to share all they knew of Chepstow. The room was well appointed, with a wonderfully comfortable bed and bathroom with excellent water pressure for a great shower. The real gem here are the people. The bar staff were warm and friendly, and David, the owner, is a wealth of historical information and energy. He sent us on a walking trip to the ruins of Piercefield House, which did not disappoint. There are even the remnants of some standing stones there on the grounds! Breakfast was a full British breakfast with sausages, eggs (to order), toast, beans, mushrooms and bacon/ham. Coffee was piping hot and very good. The serve lunch as well, but we were out and about and didn't eat lunch hardly ever, but I'm sure it was just as tasty. I cannot recommend this Inn enough, and I truly hope to be able to return to stay here again in the future. Thank you David and staff for a most enjoyable stay!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We booked to stay at this lovely looking little hotel as a stop off on or journey. Thought the price was reasonable and looked lovely. My husband and I work late so never gave it much of a thought about check in times. I had written that we expected to arrive between 7-8pm, although I had forgotten about this. As with most people, unforeseen circumstances occur, in our case my parents (who are in their 80s) boiler broke and being the lovely guy my husband is, he went to fix it. In the meantime I have a call from the hotel. I politely answered not for one minute expecting that arriving later would be an issue as to my understanding this place is after all is a pub. A genuine error on my part. The owner was phoning me at the same time as his young member of staff was on the phone to me, where I was trying to work out a time of arrival and as we had a bit of a drive so it was likely to to be after 10. When I got off the phone, not realising at this point that the owner had been calling me, I had an answerphone message. I have never been so shocked in my life, it was a vile answerphone message where the owner was shouting at me. I have kept this recording and will ensure that I keep a hard copy because in all my years of travelling I have never been rude to anyone, and I have never ever been spoken to as I was just spoken to. I called the owner back, only for him to continue his rant at me over the phone. I was patient and apologetic, explaining it was a genuine error on my, and didn’t realise that it would be such an issue as it was a pub, he then scoffed and said so many people say that, so I said, ohh so this is an issue you’ve had before! He quickly backtracked, but continued to chastise me, he said that this is the contract you have with booking.com ….. so I said so you live far from the hotel and he said yes again with a tone that suggested I should have known this. I asked what happens in the night if there is an issue in the hotel after 9 o’clock. He said guests contact my duty manager who only lives 20 minutes away. I then said, so would it be possible for them to just let us in? He shouted NO at me. At this point I’d had enough, and I expressed my disappointment at how I’d been spoken to, and he continued to rant. I’d asked if that meant we had lost our money because we hadn’t arrived between 7&8, he said yes!! So this business OWNER who moaned about the state of the economy during his rant, is not dedicated enough to consider that sometimes people get held up for very good reasons, and that when someone books into a hotel they don’t expect anything but relaxation. In all honesty, it seems to us that this man uses the booking.com ‘contract’ which he kept citing, to take your money and not have to change the beds or make breakfast in the morning, but still keep your money because he’s shouting CONTRACT!!! Ironically, you can check out at 1am no problem. This owner did not care enough about his business to facilitate or accommodate a guest who made a genuine mistake of thinking that pubs are open til 11, or stay for a little longer to ensure the reputation of his business has chosen to take our money, but not allow us to stay because we can’t get there for his timeframe. He wouldn’t even ask the duty manager to pop by to let us in. So good luck if you book here and have an emergency. Or if you are held up for any reason. I was also laughed at for not knowing that pubs shut at 9 since covid?? I thought hotels were 24 hours? I own a holiday home in Cardigan, that’s an hour and a half from where we live. We have a key safe in situ for our guests recognising that life doesn’t always run smoothly. For us, our guests experience is paramount, we have even driven the hour and a half to support our guests. So please forgive me if I don’t understand your reluctance to manage your business in the same courteous manner. The irony of this is that we booked to stay at this hotel to support local businesses, as opposed to staying at a cheaper chain hotel in order to bolster our economy in Wales. A big thumbs up to the owner - not a staff member- of this establishment for the dire treatment of guests, and good luck with the economy that you’re moaning about, because if you are facing economic challenges, they are of your own making due to your lack of commitment and customer relations. If you aren’t prepared to put the work in, then you should not be in the hospitality industry!! I have no doubt this man’s response to this review will reflect his unprofessional manner.

We were only looking for a convenient place to stop over for a funeral and found ourselves spending a couple of lovely nights in room 2. Spacious room, comfortable bed, great shower, tea/coffee and everything as it should be. All the staff were very polite and helpful and the manager was happy to share some local history with a little humour too. We had breakfast which was tasty and well presented. It was just a few minutes walk to the castle and to the riverfront and shops which was ideal. Pay and display car park just behind was cheap and easy enough. They made us feel at home and we would happily stay again.

A lovely old Pub. About 900 yards from the Racecourse. We stayed for 2 nights over the weekend of the 8/9th of June. Our room was a little small, but perfectly adequate. The shower was hot and powerful. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean and tidy. The room overlooked the main road and due to single glazing(It's a listed building, so nothing they can do about that) a little road noise. No trouble sleeping after a few beers! Unfortunately there is no parking. However there is a pay and display just around the corner. We had a main meal and breakfast and both were top notch. We were made to feel very welcome by Dave the owner and Kayleigh the Manager, who couldn't do enough for us despite being heavily pregnant. Never stayed here before, but now we've found it, it will be our go to place to stay when going to the races. Keep doing what you're doing and hope to see you in November! Elaine & Adrian

Nice meal and served in a flash. Lots of gravy and pie is a real pastry pie, not a casserole with a topping as you get some places. Cheesy mash was good too. The Coach and Horses was an absolute delight to stay at, a beautiful property with beautiful rooms.Getting to the hotel was easier than I thought even if it was a bit difficult to find, once I got there getting settled in was a breeze too I was very happy with the room I had booked and it was exactly how I wanted it to be. My room was a great place to stay, the bed was very comfortable and supportive the facilities were great the window view was not bad at all and it wasn’t too cold either which was a bonus for me because I'm always too hot or too cold! The night I ate at the hotel was even better, Darren who is the manager of The Coach & Horses makes all the food by himself with no help from anyone else and the fact he does this all on his own put’s it into perspective of how human talents can really shine though. The food I had was some of the best food I’ve ever tasted the home made lasagne was like heaven In my mouth and the Brie bites with Cranberry sauce was absolutely to die for! To top it all off Darren was an absolute pleasure to meet he is very sociable yet very professional at the same time he knows how to make his guests feel welcome and appreciated and he certainly showed that for me. They booked me into a sister hotel, run by the same brewery. They upgraded me and didn’t charge me. I didn’t expect or ask for that. They did it anyway. I will mention what they did far and wide. We moved here 2 weeks ago and have been trying out the local dog friendly eateries. This pub is right up there! Dog friendly, great staff and fab food. Just had a fantastic Sunday lunch. Plenty of it and as close to home cooked as you’ll get. The gravy was spot on. Prices excellent. We will definitely going back. Well done to this pub and all it’s staff

My vegetarian friend was given pork sausages instead of vegetarian ones. She ate one before noticing. The bar man gave us the money for our meals back but the experience still cost us £11. My friend spent the rest of the evening being sick. I understand that mistakes happen but this was a terrible, terrible thing to happen to a vegetarian. What if it had been a food allergy? I expect much better.

I was so incredibly upset to discover that the vegetarian sausages I ate were actually pork. The barman (proprietor?) hastily reimbursed me £20 cash from the till and showed me the dockets stating "vegetarian", absolving himself of responsibility. I cannot comprehend what was going on in the kitchen, only that the chef was in a hurry to leave because food finished at 8pm and we arrived just before. I cannot believe the lack of care for a non meat eater and was horrified and disgusted by what I'd unintentionally consumed. I threw up when I got back to the accommodation and it ruined our first night in Chepstow, on our much looked forward to mini hen weekend.

If you are in Chepstow don't miss the Coach and Horses on Welsh Street. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. The staff, including Dave, the owner/manager, are welcoming, helpful and friendly. There is a sun-trap courtyard at the rear as well as seating outside at the front. Also it is one of the cleanest public houses we know of. They also provide bed and breakfast and 20 types of gin.

Very welcoming pub, quiet and peaceful ambience. The bar manager was very friendly and made us feel relaxed. The menu looked good - excellent menu for Vegetarians, so much so I was quite tempted to choose a Vegetarian meal. However, my friend had the Soup of the Day and the baguette had been popped in the oven so it was served warm served with generous pats of butter.I chose the Beer Battered Fish and Chips. This is well recommended as the batter tasted gorgeous and was very slightly crisp, the fish was tender and fell apart perfectly. The chips served were triple cooked, crispy on the outside and perfectly fluffy on the inside. Absolutely delicious, very generous portion size so this will fill you up for the rest of the day. It was served with minted peas, the condiments were in their own pot on the table so you could help yourself.Overall a very good choice of pub restaurant with lovely food.

A very nice mid-week lunch for three of us. Booked in advance of course. We were the only customers which felt a little odd but food and service were very good, fish and chips, beef chilli, steak, cheesecake, brownie and cream were all very good - cheesecake was thick and creamy but could have had a dash more orange. Hope they can survive the shutdowns. Good location for castle, river and town parking a couple of minutes away.

The pub is beautifully decked out with Christmas lights. A warm welcome, along with an open fire awaits you and it is such a shame there were so few customers while we were there. The covid precautions you’d expect are all in place, there’s a one way system and you can log in using the NHS app or use the traditional pen and paper log in.The menu was varied with plenty of choice. Though i have to say my chunky chilli was a little disappointing ... small chunks and hardly any chilli present. If you like very mild dishes fine but this was the least fiery version of the dish that I think I’ve ever had. The chips, however, were divine!!!

Had a real treat today - a break from the same old home working routine - our first pub desk experience. What a fantastic deal - after a lovely welcome we were shown to a warm, comfortable and spacious work space (fireside - bonus) and spoilt rotten with endless pots of tea / coffee and a lovely lunch. If you’re looking to have a working break from your own four walls give this a go - the area was spotlessly clean, safe and well organised and the team couldn’t have been more accommodating and friendly, We look forward to our next visit and, in addition, plan to make an ‘out of work’ booking very soon. Thanks guys!

Came here to Wales from a tier one zone before the Welah ‘firebreak’. What a great meal. Everything cooked fresh to order and my biggest tip is that you should not have any lunch - the portions are huge but delicious. Ricky was a great server and didn’t rush you and made you feel at home. Had a steak which I always can be wary about but it was great and they were flexible with the sides - a true inclusive, awesome pub. Would come again if we lived in Chepstow! Thank you for showing us great, friendly, Welsh hospitality.

We had a dinner here and found the food to be standard pub grub, no real complaints but no wow, sauces seemed to be from packet rather than home made.Staff were 100% really attentive and friendly, made us feel welcome and relaxed, prices were good for the town about average, same for drinks. Some of the locals were wondering around without masks, as were some guest coming in and out without masks, a little concerning but pub was well marked out and had the required gels etc.We enjoyed our visit in a nice setting, but could improve.

My partner and I had dinner here to celebrate his birthday. I had the steak and ale pie and he had the trio of sausages. The meal was hot and very tasty and the portions large! The service was excellent as usual. This is the third time I have eaten here since lockdown restrictions were eased and I shall definitely be back. Maybe next time I’ll ask for a “doggy bag” so I can have pudding...

We were on a staycation visiting the Wye Valley. Whilst there we popped over to Chepstow for the day. Wondering around town my nose pick up a wonderful aroma coming from this establishment. On entering we were welcomed by Ricky and Darren. We ordered our drinks and inquired what roasts were available. We were given a choice of meats to which we opted for beef. I must say the food was served hot and the roasties were fab! I would highly recommend you try if your ever in the area. Darren and Ricky were the loveliest, friendliest staff and we felt safe with the social distancing and sanitizer was available. We will certainly be back!

Due to stay here after a gig in the castle on the 17th of August. The day before, had a message to say that our room we were due to stay in had been flooded, and no other rooms were available. This had been booked since January, so why it was specifically “our”designated room I have no idea. Multiple attempts at contacting them by phone have failed. No other hotel rooms available in Chepstow at such short notice, and has resulted in us having to book a hotel out of the area and booking taxis there and back, so a lot of extra expense. Highly suspicious and extremely poor customer service. Think twice before booking here folks
