Obviously a change of ownership/management. Very disappointed as this used to be an amazing pub with fantastic food. Now it’s more like cafe / burger van food. Such a shame. Staff are very friendly and pleasant but don’t go there for a special meal anymore it’s just limited and poorly presented food. No presentation , plate full of grease and meat over cooked. I hope it’s just teething problems and that you can improve. Great for just a drink tho and probably bowl of chips ! 😢 very sad to see and even more so to write this review.

On a narrowboat holiday so a canalside pub is a bonus. We went for our evening meal. Disappointing menu - all pubs seem to offer the same menu these days! Burger, fish and chips, lasagne, scampi ☹️ The lasagne was far too salty (trying to make us drink more?!🤣). 3 had calves liver special just fried liver with very thick and sticky mashed potatoes, no other vegetables and a very small portion of caramelised onion. A gravy would have been better. We had to ask for cutlery after our food was brought to us and there were no napkins. Staff were friendly and general atmosphere was pleasant. No disabled toilet.

At long last a local pub that welcomes locals and visitors alike. Meghan and Jack although new to the area are wonderful hosts. Simple but tasty bar food. Wonderful young staff that are chatty and happy. So glad we are within walking distance to this treasure. A visit to sit beside the canal on a sunny day is a must. I’m sure winter months will be just us welcoming with a roaring fire.

We were looking forward to coming back here. We plan it every year to come here because we love it so much! Well what a let down and huge disappointment 😔 this year. We parked up, went inside and registered our vehicle. We then saw 2 waitresses having a laugh and a chat so my husband approached them and said we had a table booked. They looked at him like we ruined a birthday surprise and said well you can sit anywhere. We sat down at a table, no cutlery, no menu. I went and asked for the menu from the bar. A waitress came to our table and said.. oh you have a menu that saves me a job!.. Then asked whether we were ok to order at the bar. The menu did not have a great variety, the device was shocking so we left. On our way out the door, a waiter barged past my husband as he was leaving. If you want to stop for a pint after your pint, then great. But a family visit... Go elsewhere.

We called at 1o'clock in here hoping for a good Sunday lunch, disappointing from start to finish. We ordered drinks at bar very friendly young barman,I ordered half pint cider shandy,he gave me a pint!We asked for a menu,a stained greasy paper menu was handed over, with just Sunday lunch of either Beef or Pork, and was promptly told Beef was off menu! We sat down, waiting to be served,no one came!So hubby went to bar and said,he was told, "oh you need to order at bar"!! We hadn't been told that, neither were there signs to advise that. Ordered the no choice but pork, and then the wait began!!! As I'm in catering myself,I tend to "clock" what's going on!!! I'm sorry to say Coach and Horses, you need a Damned good manager,to teach your staff, how to be a good part of running the place.... We waited for 40mins,a very young girl came to our table carrying one plate, then went away,a couple minutes back again, carrying another,! Then it " do you want sauces",I said we would like gravy and Apple sauce and some cutlery please, so off she went, few mins went by,back with a small gravy boat, then away again, and back with a tiny dish of Apple sauce, away again and then I saw her,go to another table, then she came back with another tiny dish of Apple sauce,...I said we are still waiting for cutlery!,and please could we have more gravy,as there was only enough for 1!!It really was diabolical,, We started to eat,(me without gravy) till 5mins in, the only efficient looking one, walked past, and I asked her for gravy, immediately was fetched. The Pork was burnt on edges, tasteless and very tough. The roast parsnip, burnt and unedible, the sorry state of the veg was to be honest a disgrace to put on the plate,2grey beans,a tiny bit of carrot and just crumbs of cauli. I have to say though the 2roast potatoes were well cooked!! All this time, the table next to us,ordered puddings as we say down and was being served them as we finished our meal. I hate giving reviews usually,as I'm in the same line of work, but watching what was going on and my husband listening to me say OMG watching the girl esp that served us, it really was truly awful. You definitely need someone good as manager, and get these young waitresses to be able to be more efficient and to be able to multi task and think a bit more, like for instance to be able to carry two plates at once,is NOT a hard task. This particular waitress really was pathetic to watch. We are usually quite big tippers, but I refused to leave one this time. Also the toilet that I went to use,had dog crap on the floor,it was disgusting. Me and two other ladies in there refused to use it,so had to wait for for the only other toilet.......and these toilets are not great, extremely small, very tight to close door, very bad for anyone with a disability

We stopped in on the off chance that we could get a late lunch / early dinner. Unfortunately the kitchen had already closed but Jack & Megan, the owners, were more than happy to make a small 'boerewors' (translated from Afrikaans basically means farmers sausage - and is a South African delicacy!) Also expat Saffers, they welcomed us in and made us feel completely welcome - so much so that we went back again, missed the kitchen time yet again, but no problem at all - we were offered very delicious cornish pasties and coleslaw! Highly recommend a visit there!

Weren't seving food when we got there. So had a drink then left. Later received a parking ticket. Apparently you are meant to put your reg no. Into a tablet and pay £5 for 24hrs. No signs to say this and no one at the bar mentioned this when we purchased drinks. Only found out as other people have left reviews and being fined. Scam of a pub.

We booked a table for 13 to celebrate a birthday with a scenic cycle ride along the canal followed by Sunday lunch at the Coach and Horses. I just wanted to say Megan and her super friendly team could not have been more welcoming - from the moment we dropped off the birthday cake at the pub before setting off on our bike ride. The Coach and Horses has all the character you wish for in a perfectly placed canal-side pub in the wonder Brecon Beacons. We initially intended to eat outside and watch the boats go by but Megan booked us an indoor table in case the weather was unkind. It was a toss-up but we stayed indoors and ate at a lovely long table. Sunday lunch was delicious - roast beef or chicken with all the trimmings or an excellent vegetarian option followed by a good variety of puddings. Three of our party were from the junior generation and the pub laid on a perfect lunch to set their taste buds humming. They have some terrific beers and the waiting staff were attentive to all our needs throughout the meal. As I understand it, Megan and Co have only been at the pub for a month or two and had only recently hired a chef before our arrival. But everyone in our party greatly enjoyed the spread they laid on. And I honestly couldn't believe how reasonable the total bill came to. It was well under £20 a head including all our drinks before and during the meal. The pub was pretty full and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. Everyone was relaxed and having fun. I live almost 50 miles but will certainly look forward to another visit to the Coach and Horses next time we go cycling in the area. A huge thanks to all the staff for making our day so special - bravo guys, you're doing a fantastic job. Good luck for the future.

We often travel to this pub in the summer months for a lovely walk along the canal and a stop off in the picturesque beer garden situated right next to the canal for a cold glass of cider. More recently we have been enjoying evening meals inside the pub where a cosy fire has been lit to take the chill off the winter air and creating a welcoming homely feel. The food served here is outstanding with an amazing selection of fresh fish dishes which are usually only found in coastal locations. Everything is beautifully presented and tastes amazing! The staff are all very friendly and cannot do enough for you always willing to go that extra mile to ensure you have a pleasant experience. The Coach & Horses is a pure gem and we cannot wait to visit again soon.

Very good experience on the Thai night, There were two menus (one for those that didn’t want Thai). We had the four course Thai menu which was superb and tasted very authentic. A spicy soup opener followed by a selection of appetisers (chicken satay skewers were delicious, as were the king prawns). 4 dishes made up the main course which were superb followed by a deep fried banana and coconut cream desert. A lot of great food for the £27 p/h cover. Excellent value for the times we’re in.

We turned up today looking a bit bedraggled after a very wet walk along the canal but were greeted warmly and shown to a table despite not having booked and with an equally wet dog in tow! We are regulars for family lunch when down from London. Always great hospitality and cooking. Should have written earlier, but today's lunch was just exceptional. "Fish and chips" understates the tempuraresque sole with Sean's tartare sauce. But son and I had best ever fresh "seafood chowder" - a gourmet version of the New England version = spoiler alert.

Very disappointed with some of the plates of food served last night. Three out of the six of us ordered the special chowder. Unfortunately, there was nothing special about it. I would not serve a dish like that in my own home. It looked as though it had been frozen, defrosted, reheated and placed under a heat lamp. A member of staff informed us that it always looks like that. Nobody around the table recognised it as chowder. We were offered to order a different dish.

I can't speak highly enough of our experience at the Coach and Horses on Thurs 5th October. We were on the canal and neither of us has a new-fangled smart phone so we called in to check on availability, booking, etc.. The staff were taking a break but were very quick to book us a table for an hour later. We took ourselves off for a walk before returning. Our orders were taken promptly by a waitress who was very attentive throughout our meal. The menu was varied and mouth-watering - I'd have enjoyed anything on it! We opted for the pork steak with leaks and mustard and the beef and ale open-topped pie. The food arrived quickly (which is what canal travellers often need, as they are on a schedule, though we'd tied up for the night). All was piping hot and an extra bowl of chips arrived. The portions were very generous, though we ate everything on our plates except the pattern! Beer was excellent and there was no music that drowns conversation in so many pubs these days. All around us were also clearly enjoying their food, the prices were very reasonable and the staff friendly and helpful. I just wish the Coach and Horses was nearer to where we live (Devon) as it's a bit of a drive from here for an evening out! Thanks very much!

Just very poor in general, such a strange set up. As you enter, you walk through a little deli area, which is nice....then there’s a random TV playing with people watching and the restaurant area just beyond that. Service was OK, but food was poor in every sense. Badly cooked - very amateur. Considering the area the Coach & Horses are located, they really need to improve drastically in order to compete with neighboring restaurants in Crickhowell & Talybont.Wound not recommend for a meal, useful for a drink in the summer in their beer garden in front of the river, but that’s about it. A real shame.

We travelled July 2019 before the Covid hit us. We were on a 5 week canal holiday, from NZ, and this was to be our last canal on the journey. The Coach & Horses was a short walk from our mooring spot and was extremely busy on a warm sunny evening, and a Sunday at that. We had no trouble acquiring an outside table and were quickly served with delicious meals and drinks. which we enjoyed whilst watching the families of kids paling in the play area across the road. The staff were busy but really friendly and didn't seem phased by the throng of patrons. If I could have a chance I would certainly come back for another great meal at this lovely country pub.

My boyfriend and I went for food on 25th September. We decided to both have the "special" of monkfish, with patatas bravas and greens. It came out and we were disappointed with the presentation, to start with. The monkfish was overcooked. The "patatas bravas" appeared to be deep fried potato cubes with a slight sprinkling of paprika, which tasted like they came from Aldi frozen food section. The "greens" consisted of 3 tiny, overcooked asparagus sprigs. We politely asked the waitress for more greens but she never came back. This terrible meal cost almost £18 per head. We don't mind paying a lot of money for food but for the quality if this meal, they should have charged no more than £5. We will NEVER return which is a shame.

If you are looking for a warm and friendly welcome to take your mind of the current climate then this is not the place for you. We arrived with the Welsh government recommended four households and was immediately told it had to be two households, when asked since when as we had not been told this on booking we were met with “do you not watch the news” and turned away. I understand that some places may have their own rules but these surely would need to be told before arriving or on booking, not to be told at the door that we needed to watch the news when in fact the owners themselves should be watching the news. Haven’t eaten at this establishment and don’t think we ever will, couldn’t not recommend enough.

They managed to squeeze me and the dog in for an early doors table, which was great considering it was a bank holiday weekend. The dog was made such a fuss of and bribed with lots of treats. The seafood chowder was just perfect on a cold rainy day, and was washed down with a pint of local ale.I have one regret... I hoped to visit the deli the following day but after a fair few hours in the hills I just wanted to get on and start the long drive home. Wish I hadn’t bothered now, they are part of the eat out help out scheme, but this business decides what you can eat on that and gives you a small menu already reduced in price and I must add also portion size, they also don’t include soft drinks in this offer, and if your gluten-free please be very careful, their idea of gluten-free is that you can’t eat bread, pasta, nan bread and papadum, this is stated on their menu saying all other dishes are gluten-free! But they have scampi, battered cod, onion rings, and chips on their menu non are gluten-free free! Also they have great difficulty in telling you what ingredients are in their foods for you to check! Any way we ordered the soup of the day carrot and coriander, garlic mushrooms and salt and pepper squid to start! Out came cauliflower soup with stale bread, garlic mushrooms on stale bread and one with out the bread for the gf member of our party, and 3 salt and pepper squid, very disappointed they forgot to put the garlic in the mushrooms, the salad on the side was all limp, and the soup wasn’t even carrot and coriander, it was all poor and not great in taste!Next we had the special £18 steak strips in a sauce with seasonal veg and chips, their burger @ £15 both not on the menu for the 50% off government scheme! Well the steak came out!! 6 slices of tough steak in a so called sauce and the seasonal veg was frozen peas!! that’s it £18 The burger was over cooked and dry very difficult to eat! Our gf could only have the gammon with no chips cause the Cook them in the same oil as scampi, and other gluten products, so the offered new potatoes, well they come out 3 potatoes cut in half very hard, dry and black, the gammon was very tough and salty. Out bill came to over £80 and I got to say it was one of the worst meals we have ever eaten for the money! So we certainly wouldn’t recommend there are much better pubs, just down the road from this place, so I suggest you just keep going and head to another.

Beautiful meal out at the coach and horses, first meal out since lockdown and it didn’t disappoint. Socially distanced tables & super clean throughout, sanitizer stations readily available too so felt very safe.

Such a lovely place, the staff really have a handle on distancing and safe service. We booked in advance and stayed in the car park in our camper van. Lovely vegan option and a good understanding of vegan requests. My partner had the posh fish and chips and said it was delicious.Friendly, hard working staff who really couldn’t do enough for us. Thank you, we will definitely be back!

7 of us came for Sunday lunch, we were taking my elderly dad out for the first time since lockdown. Lovely location and day however it was overshadowed by the attitude of a member of staff. Also we were given the wrong meal and when my sister mentioned this to the owner his manner was so rude. Won’t be in a hurry to return.

We’d booked a meal for Mother’s Day at the Coach and Horses and unfortunately due to the current situation we were unable to go. However the pub offered a takeaway service which we took up. The food, as always was delicious. The chicken tikka skewers as a starter were so tasty, the roast lamb lush and the puddings were awesome.

Stopped by on the off chance of getting a table for Sunday Lunch and were quickly shown to our table. The staff were polite and welcoming. My husband and I both ordered the cauliflower soup to start and although it was delicious it wasn't very hot. When the main meal came the three of us had different meats and all were lovely but we only had one small dish of veg between us and needless to say we were a little disappointed.Overall the meal was lovely and have had meals here before and they have been really good but I don't think I would rush back for Sunday lunch again.

Six of us went for a few drinks mid-week at about 7.30pm. Prices were way above the norm for South Wales ( Guinness was £4.95 a pint ) so a round of six drinks was approx £25 ( we were not all drinking Guinness! ). I wanted to buy round number five at 10.15pm and was told they had stopped serving.

Arrived after our six mile walk, had great 'posh' fish and chips at this cosy location. Live music and room for our dog!The landlord tried to organise a taxi for us back to Crickhowell, however there were none available. Thinking we might have to trek back on foot the landlord drove us back to Crickhowell and wouldn't take a penny. Thankful for the kindness of strangers.

Good pub nice beer, had a meal which was very average. Ordered at the table, took quite a while for the main course to arrive BUT the vegetables to go with it took another 10 minuets before arriving slightly cold and very under cooked. Waitress was pretty poor, very pleasant but not really up to the job. No one seemed certain what 'gluten free' was when it came to main course.

What a joy! Good atmosphere and good food and drink. Perhaps one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. Service was good and friendly – remarkable as they had a very large party to cater and yet, the rest of us on our tables of twos and fours, still had perfect service.

We stopped in for dinner on our way as we cruised down the Mon-Brec canal on a narrowboat. Easily this was our best and most delicious meal in the week we were on the canal. Highly recommend. Try the lamb trio, the lamb was very well prepared, so tender and the lamb sausage was delicious.

Just got back from Sunday lunch here, what a wonderful welcome and the food was to die for. Even my sister, who can be a bit fussy thoroughly enjoyed her day. The only downside was they didn't have any windberry tart on the menu for my brother in law.! but he's been spoilt all his life and he's 83yo. He enjoyed his cup of tea though.

We were not acknowledged when we arrived even though the bar person looked at us when we walked through the door. We waited ages to be served whilst the two bar persons laughed about a customer who told them the best way to make a cappuccino. We asked for a baguette to be told that they didn't have any but we were offered a ciabatta instead. The advertising stated wide choice of fillings to which they only had cheese and onion / cheese and tomato. We were told that they had no other choices at all.

This is one of my favourite gastro-pubs but last night raised the question of how you keep standards up when the top team has a night off. The Sunday lunch service was, we were told, hectic and busy, so the first team had the evening off. This was apparent when we walked in and the manager who is excellent front-of-house was not there.

i visited here a few months back and it’s fair to say i was not disappointed. the food was absolutely delicious and they served a good amount too! being a vegetarian myself i did see that there weren’t too many veggie/vegan options available. however i cannot fault the food i was given, i also would like to comment on how friendly the staff were towards me. i found them very welcoming and able to have a laugh with their customers which is always good. x

Having visited here last month expecting some nice food and service,We were left very disappointed.Although the food was ok it was nothing special certainly not worth the money in my opinion. However the service was where this place was a huge letdown, would say we had a terrible welcome but there was no welcome at all, very frosty from the owner/manager,her attitude was terrible, which seems to flow down to the waitresses.Which is a real shame because this place could be a real gem with a change of management and a good old friendly welcome,it costs nothing to be nice

We visited whilst on our way down to Builth Wells. A family of 8. Food was fabulous very tasty. Staff extremely friendly and worked very fast to serve our Sunday lunch. Very large portions and a huge bowl of cauliflower cheese unfortunately only one of our party liked that so a lot went to waste. We would definitely recommend! Diolch yn fawr/thank you very much

We stayed here a few months back and found the place to be excellent again! Last time the breakfast service was poor due to a member of staff, this time the complete opposite ! The pub is amazing and has a nice atmosphere, the restaurant is lovely and the food excellent ! The staff are all really eager to please, the breakfast as I mentioned was excellent with great service ! Room 12 is a challenge for a 6’2 person but comfortable ! The bath should be replaced with a shower cubicle really but can’t fault the place overall and will always come back even if in room 12 :-)

We stayed here for bed and breakfast while enjoying walking in the National Park. Rooms are spacious and clean, if nt a little dated. Friendly service from staff and a fabulous breakfast. A nice chilled atmosphere to the hotel. All reasonably priced, and we look forward to returning again.

We stopped here for a few drinks and sat in the pub which was lovely. Plenty of seats and warm cosy rooms. Also had a lovely fuss of Bailey the local dog :) The landlord was very friendly and very kind to give me a birthday drink :) also he gave us some beer and cider recommendations. Reasonable prices and a spotlessly clean pub and toilets. Especially the day after New Year’s Day!! Lots of bar snacks and the landlord told us they have a pizza oven which sounds lovely so shall we come back to have one. Very good atmosphere!!!! We are staying at a local lodge and have came in here a few times. Recommend if you're in the area.
