What a horrible pub Kew's The Coach and Horses now is. Last month I wrote about the horrible and unwelcoming experience my family had when dining at The Coach and Horses. The landlord responded to that review on here with a complete misunderstanding/misrepresentation of what had happened and made no apology for the horrendous and abusive behaviour of one of his bar staff. Hardly a word of what he wrote was accurate. The landlord also claimed he would be happy to discuss it further. Yet despite several opportunities to do so, he has failed entirely to engage. It's very clear that he was simply irked by a poor review on Tripadvisor - not the first review to point out that the bar staff at the pub are poorly trained and abusive, I might add - and wanted to window dress the review with a quick and misleading reply. He has no actual interest in dealing with the issue or in improving his pub. I visited the pub again this month in an effort to track this 'caring' landlord down, but, surprise, surprise he wasn't there. Just like he wasn't on my previous visit. As Tripadvisor doesn't allow reviewers to respond, I'm doing so here. So... if you like bar staff who are unpleasant, unhelpful and abusive for no reason, feel free to call in at the worst pub in Kew - The Coach and Horses. If you'd like an enjoyable experience with good service and excellent food, I'd recommend in particular The Tap On The Line - a far better pub than The Coach - or any of the other three pubs on Kew Green, all of which are considerably better than The Coach. The sad thing is that a few years ago, before lockdown, The Coach was arguably the best pub in Kew. It's sad to see it fall so far. It was a different landlord in charge then, of course. But if the current landlord is unable and unwilling to train his staff or keep them under control then they will continue to lose custom. But perhaps he thinks having his staff swear at customers is a good thing?

Very good service and catered really well for a multitude of dietary requirements. The food was of a good quality. The hiccup with parking was quickly sorted out for us. Family and friends appreciated being able to relax and remiss in comfort despite it being a sad day. Thank you to all the team.

I had the pleasure of staying at this hotel while attending a wedding at Kew Gardens. The hotel's location was conveniently close to the venue. The staff were friendly and professional, and I found the dining options to be good. My room was lovely, and the outdoor area was just beautiful. Overall, I had a delightful experience and would be happy to return in the future.

Sunday lunch with our son. Lovely seats in front of a log fire for pre-lunch drinks, though had to ask for table to be cleared of plates & glasses. Went through to The Atrium for lunch, surrounded by many families with babies/children. Waiter who took our order did not repeat it back or listened to our order. No starter arrived for myself (only 1 ordered) Lamb rack for 2 - on menu but unavailable, Beef alternative arrived but was cold, overcooked and inedible. Pork belly for myself, was assured that crackling was available - just a cold lump of mostly fat, no crackling at all and limited cold meat. After telling waiter, he said chef would provide crackling, it arrived at my last 2 mouthfuls and was really good👍. Both beef meals returned uneaten (same for a nearby table). Front of house arrived, removed all meals from bill and offered desserts, coffees etc. All declined and left for a meal at home from my wife (an Irish chef of 57 years) who said she would have been ashamed to have served such cold fare at an Inn of such repute. As visitors to the area, we returned to our car to find a parking ticket for £110 for parking near the restaurant in an area for residents only. Do tell customers that you have a car park at time of booking please. We hate leaving reviews like this as we ran a catering company ourselves but your staff need further retraining.

Had a very lovely, relaxed pre football lunch with friends. Good food, comfortable table in the library. Manager very attentive (20’s, blonde male) Will come again thank you

Had a fab steak pie last night accompanied by a fine pint, perhaps 2. They could do with more staff on duty - service was slow but very friendly when it arrived.

Luke is a 5 star worker. Gave us the best service and because of him we never felt guilty about spending money.

My wife and I visited from the states. Lovely hotel room. We got a delicious breakfast with excellent service from Xavier. The chef is top notch. Had the omelette and eggs Benedict and they were great. Nice atmosphere, would definitely recommend.

We visited the Coach & Horses for Sunday breakfast - they don't do a brunch service on Sundays but it didn't matter as it is effectively the same food, just had to be 30 minutes earlier than we had originally planned (kitchen stops serving breakfast at 11:00). We received a warm welcome on arrival and were kindly directed to the pub's own car park (it wasn't just for residential guests) when we asked where we could park. The staff that we accounted were all very friendly, efficient and professional. The pub is also very welcoming to dogs and even has a Bark Bar for them - full of delicious doggie bones and treats and also towels and blankets for those wetter, cooler days. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for good value, home-cooked food in a homely, comfortable environment

Restaurant, bar and accommodation are all good. The rooms are comfortable, the receptionist is absolutely lovely and it's very handy for visiting Kew gardens.

The whole Coach and Horses experience was exceptional from Alicja? on reception to Mandy in the restaurant nothing was too much trouble. The whole team went out of their way to accommodate us. Thoroughly recommend will definitely return

Humiliating experience on Sunday 1st September 2024 at around 7:20pm. This used to be one of our favourite pubs any time of year but recently something has changed for the worse. My sister and I sat in the library room, it was hot so most customers were outside. We bought drinks and were told to wait 10 minutes before ordering food as the kitchen was overwhelmed. We duly waited whilst another customer ordered and paid for his dinner which was odd. At some point we noticed a manic lady with straggling long dark hair eyeballing our table and tramping back and forth in and out of the bar. A few minutes later the duty manager came to advise us we cannot sit at the table as the room was reserved, despite there being three large empty tables. He did not communicate this to existing customers which included two young lads who also strolled in after us. He explained that the table was reserved but on Sundays reservation cards are not placed at the tables. The polite but inexperienced bar staff had not been made aware that the table was reserved. It made no sense. We refused to leave as we had just bought drinks and a bar snack. I was really shocked and alarmed at this behaviour and wondered what was happening. In the end he relented and told us someone would take our order. It was unacceptable, humiliating and unnecessary. I intend to not return to this pub which was once our family’s favorite spot. The Cricketers, The Goat and Botanist are in close proximity. A relaxing drink in The Cricketers made it all good.

Such a gorgeous pub with great drink selection and lovely staff but the food is extremely overpriced for such substandard dishes. We are regulars but have stopped ordering food. Just isn’t worth the price points at all. Great pub otherwise!

Great, spacious pub with lovingly and super cleanly furnished rooms on the upper floor. We were grateful for the air conditioning since we arrived on the hottest day of the summer. Ideally located within walking distance of Kew Gardens. The hotel team is great and took great personal care of us.

What a lovely stay at this hotel. The room was comfortable and well equipped. We enjoyed soaking up the sun while having an evening drink. The food was delicious. A special mention to Alicja who made our stay extra special. We will stay at this hotel again.

Ordered gluten free food, the exact same dish my friend ordered like a hour before. Mine wasn’t gluten free. The waitress explained to my friend how her dish had been prepared, when mine arrived she just put it down & walked off. I thought well, it was already explained so, she knows I heard it. Mine ended up having main ingredients missing, there was regular bread with it… would have been hilarious if I hadn’t ended up being ill & missing the entire day of the Happy Place festival. Just please be careful if have allergies & you eat here. The aperol spritz was nice 🤷‍♀️

Stayed here for the second time to attend a concert across the road at Kew Gardens. This time we had our five month old daughter with us. The room was spacious with plenty of room for the cot that they provided for us. Excellent staff who were very helpful. Food was very good and reasonably priced. Will definitely stay again

Lovely Pub in Kew. A home form home decor. Lovely leather armchairs and sofa’s feels like you are at home. Big TV screen (for the footie) big bar and a really nice outside terrace to watch the world go by and a great big green.

Never been here before. Great to have free underground parking. Lift to rooms from car park. At first sight the room was beautiful but small. All very clean and I loved that the window was open. Bathroom was spotless. Again quite small. There were a few decorating needs. Grouting a bit brown in places and walls of bedroom in need of attention. There was a hamper and fridge full of goodies to purchase. I had one item and left the cash on a plate. I had dinner the night I stayed. Nothing special. However, all the staff are friendly and very, very helpful. Can’t fault any of them. The pub area was full of people that evening. It was a lovely atmosphere especially as I was on my own. A huge shout out to Mandy who is just so lovely. Friendly, chatty and helpful. Also there was a young man but I forgot his name. Georgio maybe? Sorry! Also helpful and friendly.

New management and a rapid decline in what used to be a nice pub across service, food and now a very unfriendly atmosphere. There are much better pubs on the river nearby.

We had a day at Kew Gardens planned (coming from Witney, near Oxford) and booked the Coach & Horses to ensure that we had somewhere to eat. Never sure how busy places are going to be, even on a Monday evening. We were not disappointed. Food was good as was the service, thank you Mandy. Would definitely go back if in the area again. The pub had a good atmosphere and was clearly popular with locals.

Just came back from dinner there. 2 of us had fish and chips, another had a the veggie burger and another the sausage and mash. Food was incredibly bland, so much so that we ended up scrambling for the salt. Service was also poor. Might be worth a visit for a pint but I wouldn’t recommend the food. It strikes me as abit of a tourist trap

This is a great pub with a great selection of drinks and food. I enjoyed the atmosphere. The front terrace is a bit noisy with all the cars from Kew road, but they kept the terrace very well equipped with nice tables and benches.

What an excellent lunch we had! The food and service were fantastic and we would recommend this comfortable friendly inn if you are visiting Kew Gardens and want better food and value for money. My caesar salad was delicious and my son’s lamb pie was very good. Polite barmen and waiters - that’s a 5 star review from us!

We've been coming to this pub for a long time and seen it change as the management changes. Currently, the new team are trying to mix things up and create a more inclusive vibe. Sadly, the food is still lacking in flavour and variety. It's a bit of a mix of styles and yesterday, having ordered the Garden (vegetarian) sharing board, had to send it back as it was bland with the sausage rolls being stodgy, claggy and not appetising. It was strange mix of items that didn't really gel on the plate. The team were great about exchanging it for something else so we ended up with a chicken Caesar salad, made especially as it wasn't on the menu, and a goats cheese salad. Both could have benefitted from including a bit of flatbread to balance it out. Thank you for being accommodating, but you have a way to go for us to eat with you again.

We used the Coach and Horses as a venue for a funeral wake. Everything from the initial meeting with Simon, to the attention paid to the final guests leaving on the day, was handled with real sensitivity and care. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this pub and plan to visit far more often myself. The staff were excellent and couldn’t have done more to help make a sad occasion much more bearable.

My visit to Coach & Horses, Kew last night did not disappoint. A warm greeting from Claudio on arrival impressed, the comfy table in the library I’d requested was perfect, as was the food and service. My meal was delicious and the wine sublime (thank you to Claudio for the recommendation). I especially appreciated that the table was already set for with cutlery and glassware when we arrived, rather than only being provided when food arrived. Service was excellent too, attentive but not intrusive. I’ll def be back, soon.

Very much as it advertises itself, but for those needing an overnighter before a visit to Kew Gardens, this is an excellent spa. Competitive prices for London, attentive and friendly staff, comfortable bed, a good menu and a wide range of beer... and surprisingly quiet for its location. Foot-sore, we went back for a well-deserved Sunday lunch - couldn't fault the veggie option: great stuff!

Booked the hotel for 5 nights. We changed the reservation to 3 nights at short notice. We were offered a free breakfast as a gesture of goodwill because we had to change rooms after 2 days. The staff was very friendly and the food tasted great and the portions were really generous.

Fantastic. We stopped in on a rainy sunday morning to meet friends who had opted for a dirty weekend down in Kew, as one does i imagine. Food was excellent, more generous for a breakfast than some other locations around, and the pub itself is very nice and quiet and also well kept.

We had a delicious Sunday roast at The coach &Horses. Everything was really good and the food was wonderful. We had our dog with us the staff were very accommodating and friendly. Parking was good as they have a dedicated car park at the rear. We will definitely be back.

Lovely experience on Mothering Sunday. It was really busy with large groups yet the food and drinks were all served in good time by smiley staff. We all loved our food as well.

Called in for a drink before dinner nearby. The bar manager was very accommodating given that the bar was very loud with the remnants of the people who had been watching rugby and football and found us a quiet table in the restaurant area and served us 2 very good G&Ts.

We used The Coach and Horses for my Mother's wake. We were a local family and Mum would have approved of us being in a local pub. When booking the venue I met with Simon, the manager, who was very kind when I burst into tears. ! Everyone said the room we had, The Atrium, was lovely and they enjoyed the food. We had ordered sandwiches, quiches and puddings. Some friends had not been there before and said they were so impressed with the pub that they wanted to return.

Had the most wonderful retirement & birthday family get together and the guys at the Coach made it very special. Great service, amazing buffet (chicken wings, mini burgers and pies got special mention), they couldn’t do enough to make sure we had a lovely evening. A wonderful bunch of people who really know their trade, see you soon guys.

On Sundays, we came here to eat the Sunday roast that British people eat. We actually ordered beef and chicken, but I liked the beef better. The atmosphere was very nice and a lot of people came. In particular, the burgers were very delicious for me.

What a lovely place to stay! The room was so well appointed, had everything we needed and the bed was enormous and super comfortable. Honestly it was a million times better than the so-called 4-star hotel we stayed in recently. Delicious Sunday roast too. Stayed a week solo for work at Kew Gardens, the staff made the stay, so warm, welcoming and went above and beyond. I felt sad to leave! Brilliant accomadation, blissfully quiet rooms & great food. Highly recommend whether you’re after a comfy bed for the night or a fancy get away. Thank you, I’ll be back for leisure one day! All the best.

First good pub experience in a while. Rare to get a really good roast, served fresh and hot. Sat in the private function room. Good atmosphere by the bar. Staff helpful.

Had a meal on afternoon of 2nd January. Food was average and fish, especially, very small. Service was appalling -very casual, kept coming back to check what we had ordered (4 of us) and didn't write anything down. Very overpriced. Atmosphere was very good though and an ideal location for Kew gardens,

Felt the food was good value for the price, we all left very full and happy with the quality. The service whoever was very poor, waited 20 minutes after being seated but no one came with menus, so we had to go to the kitchen to find someone to provide us with menus. Felt ignored by the staff all afternoon until we asked for the bill, they dealt with that immediately! We could understand more if the pub was full but it wasn’t, plenty of spare tables.

A disappointing experience overall. The food was average, the kitchen closed before we could order dessert with no warning. Service was wanting. It was New Year, and the bar ran out of limes at 830pm?

Unlike previous visits, our New Year dinner at the pub was decidedly below par. 8pm reservation with no warning that they would close the kitchen by 9pm, meant they took our dessert order then told us we couldn't have anything. Food was ok, but not fab. Service was poor, I had to wipe my glass before drinking as the server held it by the top edge.
