What a fabulous little find! We came across this restaurant while googling somewhere to eat for the evening. It’s busy little place, so I would advise booking in advance. FOOD -Absolutely delicious!! we had the Goat curry and the muscles. Both were full of flavour and I thought very reasonably priced. AMBIANCE- We loved it! We stayed much longer than we thought, as we enjoyed the trendy/vibrant atmosphere. There was a DJ mixing and we thought she was really good!! We managed to get into one of the little cosy egg chair booths after our meal and it was really comfy . I would definitely recommend for couples and groups. To give you an idea ,we are in our late 40s and we had the best time.

Absolutely delicious meals, from the goat curry to the fish of the day. Children's portions are huge and really tasty. The terrace is lovely to sit on a warm day, and the decor is gorgeous.

A very special and appealing interior, this is what comes to your eye first. The first floor is pretty dark, the second floor with the glass roof is the opposite. Very nice decoration. The men's bathroom also has a surprise. The food was very good. The curry was tasty and a little bit hot, some may say too hot. The omelet was rich and well seasoned. The waitress was very friendly and fast. Unfortunately we had our dog with us, so we could not go upstairs.

Booked for a party of 18 and ate upstairs. Food was excellent with very positive feedback from all those present. Service was friendly and attentive. The decor both upstairs and downstairs was trendy and pleasant. Warm and friendly atmosphere. For the locality I strongly recommend. Also very good for those with dietary intolerances.

We had a lovely experience at Claytons. The Terrace was open for drinks and im assuming that it gets hot in the Glasshouse so they did leave the doors open which gave you a mixture of two musics and a few drunk dancers which wasn't too bad but a bit off putting in the beginning when you're stone sober. Service was lovely. Everybody was working really hard and well together. It was a fast-paced, fun yet relaxed atmosphere and we did enjoy the slightly Ibiza-esque feel which made you feel like you were on holiday. The food was good. I had a fantastic lamb dish which had a great array of colour, texture and flavour. Beautifully presented and my partner felt the same about the lamb loin. My starter, the confit of duck was underwhelming. Flavour combinations were off and didn't quite appetise me based off of presentation. My partner loved the mushroom soup. The cocktails were well priced between 10-12 pounds. Mixed well and loved the table service drinks in Terrace which really felt like you could relax and let go. Overall, very enjoyable and a great evening for us both.

An exceptional meal in a beautifully decorated restaurant. There are also plenty of gluten-free options on the menu too.

First visit to Clayton's. Atmosphere and layout of the restaurant was pleasant and welcoming. Service was attentive and genuine. Food was tasty with a good range of choices. Portions were generous and food was presented creatively. We would return, it was an enjoyable evening and worth the cost of the bill.

We went to Clayton s and the Glasshouse restaurant in Barnstaple yesterday evening it was a lovely well appointed classy establishment.the customer service was second to none very professional friendly and attentive.i Had a calprese salad to start which was full of flavour and a light starter.I had roast pork loin as my main which was served with a potato cake black pudding with mange tout and carrots and celeriac in an apple jous and i have to say this is probably the best meal i have ever had .Extremely impressed and will definitely be visiting again and recommending to everyone.

Excellent food, good atmosphere, restuarant up, bar downstairs. Soup notably good. A minor issue i had with my dish was dealt with really well by excellent staff. Mussels & Goat curry recommended.

By far the best Moules Marinere I've ever had! We had a party of 6 for my sister's hen do. Everyone agreed how incredible the food is as well as the beautiful setting in the glasshouse upstairs. Martin our waiter really went out of his way to make sure we had a fantastic evening, Lewis was also super friendly and helpful! We will definitely be back!

The setting upstairs is really lovely but unfortunately it lacked atmosphere as there was only my husband and I and another couple seated but that is by no means any fault of the restaurant. We had a totally gorgeous dinner.. fish of the day and the pork. The best part of our evening was being privileged to have Martin taking care of us… he actually made our evening, what a lovely young man 👍

Delicious lunch Amazing halloumi wrap They catered for our daughter with a peanut and dairy allergy, cooked her fresh chicken breast, peas and fries. She was over the moon. Decor delightful Service top class and very professional. We also had a staff Christmas party here and 18 of us had a great meal and lovely evening We love Clayton’s. Definitely will be back

We came here on Saturday with a group of friends for a brunch. The music, food and drinks were all fab. Beth was our waitress and she was exceptional & really looked after us. Would highly recommend

If you have never been here then WHY NOT??!! Such a wonderful restaurant hidden upstairs where staff and food are the best in town. Martin deserves a special mention as his attention to detail was second to none. We only mentioned it was our anniversary so that we could get a quiet table but Martin was so kind and attentive and ensured our evening was truly memorable. The food is to die for and the menu has something for everyone. 10/10 service thank you.

We had a duck confit and a scallops to start and a Goat Curry and a Seafood Linguine as mains. Portions were very generous whole experience , food / service / ambience was great. Absolutely fantastic !

The service was not good. Stern looking waitress needs learn to smile and give people time to order. Restaurant emptied & we were just left there. Had to attract attention to get some service & order coffees.

Had a really lovely meal at the Glasshouse, downstairs is a funky bar serving cocktails and light snacks.Upstairs is an a la carte restaurant with a glass roof , with retro furniture of a Scandinavian style. Extensive menu of which 80% is gluten free which suits my coeliac wife. We were served by Beth a very knowledgeable and helpful young lady. There is also a small outdoor seating area with heaters , all in all really great place to eat.

Outstanding food, delicious and well thought out. Staff were polite and hospitable. The furnishings were comfy and had a sense of livelihood to them. One of the best places to dine out in Barnstable. Would 100% recommend to everyone. Will definitely be back in the future.

Spent a lovely evening celebrating my wife’s 70th birthday with friends & family Ellie and the rest of the staff were very pleasant and could not do enough to make it a fantastic evening the meal was wonderful and well presented. I've eaten at Claytons a few times now and the food is excellent accompanied by a great atmosphere. Very attentive staff and nothing was to much trouble. would definitely visit again. one of the best restaurants in North Devon.

We had a family lunch here on a Saturday and whilst the resaurant was not busy, the bar downstairs was buzzing. The restaurant has a glass roof, hence the name, and has a lovely ambience, certainly on a sunny day but the decor is soothing and green. The food was unpretentiously excellent, most notably the moules and venison, with large, well presented portions. All in all, it was a very pleasant way to spend a lunchtime

We attended the amazing New Year's party at Clayton's. Amazing atmosphere, food and entertainment, really can't recommend them highly enough.

Visited for a second time. This visit we sat in the Glasshouse with its Christmas decorations. Amazing decor...and this was just the start! Martin is amazing with his customer service delivery and his character. The food was another level. I had Venison, my wife had the Rump steak and mum had the pan fried Hake. All were beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. The Tiramasu with cafe latte ice cream nearly finished me!! Wow! Everything about this place is just awesome!

I really wanted to like Claytons as I was given vouchers to go here for a 60th birthday treat. The reviews were glowing so I had high hopes. I would like to point out that initially I was not going to leave a review but as I was nagged to by email I wrote one. Surprisingly, the review that I left does not appear on their website. From the outside the restaurant does not look promising. Shabby paintwork in a pastel lilac colour. Once inside this improves with a beach bar type vibe. We were greeted by a less than enthusiastic member of staff. This theme continued throughout the visit as the staff seemed bored and inattentive. The restaurant was freezing and when I mentioned this to one of the staff they agreed that it was cold and that they hadn't been open the day before. It proved difficult to enjoy any ambience when I spent the whole time shivering with my coat over my knees. The starters were good. Well presented and tasted delicious. The drinks were of good quality. The main courses were not. They were uninspiring, poorly presented and bland. Having read such glowing reviews online of Claytons I am saddened that we had such a poor experience. Perhaps we were simply unlucky and inexperienced staff were manning the fort that evening.

Outstanding! At the moment, this is the best place in Barnstaple to be. The decor is sumptuous, the staff are professional and attentive and the food, well the food is the highlight. We were a party of 15 just before Christmas and we came with all our own preferences. Some had allergies, some had tastes and others were just plain fussy. Every single one of our needs were met and more! The menu is grown up and well thought out and the delivery of the cooking is unbelievable. Top that off with incredible bar staff mixing up some "A" level cocktails and you have a recipe for a fantastic experience. Go with your mates, treat your significant other or just pop in. You will not be disappointed. 6 stars🌟

What a fabulous New Years Eve event !! We had the most amazing time , the buffet was incredible, and all the staff were friendly and accommodating for our friend with dietary requirements. It was a really great atmosphere and with all of the entertainment and surprises we felt like royalty !! Thank you to all the team who made it so special for us

We went to their New Year's eve party. It was excellent. Food was incredible loads of it and the quality was excellent. Loads of thought had gone into the buffet. The staff were attentive and joined in the fun. We had entertainment the sax played was brilliant. Would definitely do it again next year. Well done guys you did a remarkable job.

A great funky place to eat and drink

Went on Friday with work colleagues and had the Christmas menu and it was amazing , the scallops were cooked to perfection ,the beef fillet for main was probably the best meal I've had in many years it was outstanding. We were made very welcome as always.

Had our Christmas get together yesterday. The food was absolutely amazing, first class service. Really can’t recommend this place enough well done and thank you for a great time

Had dinner with friends at the Glasshouse and the service esp the food was amazing. Big servings, very courteous staff. Expect around 10-20 mins waiting time for food on busy days. Really great ambiance. Fave was moules frites, pork belly, and all desserts! Highly recommended when in Barnstaple 😃😁

We haven't been to Claytons for a little while and we definitely won't be leaving it so long next time . We had a lovely meal the food was well presented and tasted fantastic. The service was very good the staff were attentive. Will be coming back soon.

My wife and myself visited Barnstaple for a short break and the hotel owner reccomended Claytons and The Glasshouse. We weren't disappointed, the food, the service and the atmosphere were fantastic. We can't reccomend this place enough! We'll be back 👍

Amazing - as always!. We have been going to Clayton’s for years for special occasions. Chefs are absolutely amazing - better than I have experienced in Mayfair for similar dishes. Not that London is necessarily better…… assumptions perhaps.

4 of us went to the restaurant for a quick meal before going to the theatre. The staff understood our hurry (which was unfortunate as we'd have liked to have stayed longer and we did return for a drink later!). The service was friendly but efficient. The menu choices were excellent, including allowing for food allergies / preferences etc with the waiting staff able to answer questions and make suggestions to accommodate any potential changes / issues. When the food arrived it was all perfectly cooked and well presented - the chef clearly knows what he's doing. Drink choices were also extensive and delicious. Prices were also very reasonable given the quality and atmosphere All in all, highly recommended and we look forward to returning and with a special mention to Martin who looked after us extremely well.

This was an unexpected gem we chose for a pre theatre dinner. The decors downstairs was funky and inviting, but we ate in the lighter glasshouse upstairs which was perfect for early evening when it was still daylight. The waiter, Martin, was excellent from start to finish, he know the menu and wine list inside out and made good recommendations. Friendly and professional, we couldn’t fault him or our experience there. We went back for a drink in the bar later as we had like the atmosphere so much and would definitely go again. Highly recommend.

We went last night for dinner and it was absolutely lovely , not only was the food great but the staff where really friendly and helpful with Antonina and Ametia making it a really nice evening, my only complaint is that they are closed on Sunday's or we would hsve gone again.

Great experience in the newly revamped Clayton’s. Quick drink and the olives, homemade hummus with warm Delcious bread. A complimentary glass of Prosecco for my friends birthday and extremely attentive waitresses. Claytons used to be my local wine bar but Had Lost it’s way over the years! This is a real hidden gem in the back streets of Barnstaple. Super friendly and considerate service. Excellent food and a convivial atmosphere. They have a lovely outdoor terrace upstairs if the orangerie is too warm.

Had a fantastic afternoon catching up with the girls with some amazing food and drinks. The food was fantastic we were all very very pleased. Our server was called Martin and he was very patient as we all decided what we wanted to drink and even suggested what to try which was amazing. We are all very happy will definitely be back.

Me and my partner booked to have a rare child free dinner for my birthday and Clayton’s Glass House did not disappoint. The food was incredible and the staff were all really welcoming and friendly but the guy serving us, Martin I believe he was called, was really patient with me when I was asking about all the cocktails and took the time to help me choose (I tried a few in the end) and was generally just really friendly and well mannered. I will definitely be back again.

Came in for lunch this afternoon with my girlfriends we were seated up on the terrace which is beautiful food was outstanding beautifully presented I'm tasted divine our server Martin couldn't of done more for us and went out of his way to make our visit and memorable one I had the homemade fish cakes and as I was driving they had a wide choice of alcohol-free cocktail, gins and beers can't wait to come back and try some of his cocktails. Lovely restaurant, Great set up, amazing food and really friendly and attentive staff. I had the Guinea fowl croquette to start which was super fresh and tasty followed by a hearty portion of venison with a lovely potatoe cake, fresh veg and a smooth creamy puree and lovely sauce. My server Ryan was really attentive and friendly had a great chat and he made sure I had everything I needed. Will return next time I'm in the area.

We had a lovely evening Saturday night, food was lovely delivered quickly, totally loved the crème brulé one of the best. Ryan Young served us, he was friendly, his service was quick, nothing was a problem. Clayton's is one of our favourite places to eat and relax we are always made to feel welcome.

Our group of 12 attended for a Birthday and had a good time. The only downside was the level of noise upstairs, which made conversation a little difficult. I had the fish and chips, I wasn’t sure about the side salad but the rest was well done. The starter and dessert were excellent. My wife loved her food. I will return for sure, perhaps in a smaller group and not on a Saturday night.
