Claygate fish inn in Elmbridge

Genuinely nice family running the shop. Very friendly atmosphere, mum and daughter are very chatty. I went on Friday evening just for some chips, they were excellent and fresh. However they only take cash payment, which is fine by me as I'm old school. Do check if they are open in the month of August as they close the shop for holiday.

Very decent takeaway on a busy Friday evening. Rock Salmon was a very good size and very pleasant, whilst the large chips were also very good indeed.

Always good fish and chips , very reasonably priced too. Only pain is the lack of card facility, have to pay cash , which for me is a bit annoying as rarely carry cash these days.

Absolutely fantastic place, when ever I get a job near sandown races I’m straight over to the clay gate fish inn, I always have a portion of chips with 4 saveloys they are the BEST with so much flavour, and the best price, owners are lovely to, Regards Andy

You’re not the owner of the new chippy in Esher are you 😂 We have been going to this small family business for the past 15 years and have never had a bad experience. Caroline is one of the friendliest people on the parade - always chatty. The food here is excellent, sometimes a bit of a wait on Fridays but that is to be expected. No complaints here - would definitely recommend for great food & friendly service. Also if you eat in you can take your own alcohol! 2 great off licences in the village as well. What’s not to like!!

Pleasant takeaway consisting of Veggie Burger with large chips, for early evening dinner. Takeaway was served quickly and venue is kept nicely clean. A decent meal.

I’m baffled by the good reviews. The proper sized chips tasted good but over a third of my portion were scraps. The cod didn’t taste fresh and the batter was extremely brittle. Mushy peas were so runny ( I saw a similar review from 3 year ago!) and onion rings were clearly bought in ready made and very mushy. The sausage was very low quality. Expected a lot more in Claygate and given other reviews. Shame. Spoilt the end of a really good family day out.

Always go when visiting my parents. Fabulous fish and chips. Service is always exceptional, friendly, and immaculately clean when eating in.

Excellent takeaway with an American mate. Rock Salmon and regular chips were excellent. American friend had a Large Plaice with chips and pickled eggs, which he very much enjoyed.

I only work in the area a couple times a week, but love to get a portion of take away chips which are are really tasty from here. Thanks to the lovely lady serving. Would recommed.

First and last time I will go. £17 for two cod and chips and peas . Very poor quality cod and way too small for the price. Peas watery. Lady serving was quite abrupt . Not sure what they fry in the batter tasted oily.

Very friendly: they had not picked up my order left on voicemail earlier but we had excellent fresh haddock and lashings of chips prepared fresh very quickly. Food great. Minor issues were to do with checking voicemail orders and cash payments only - who doesn't use contactless card these days?

After a hellishly long day, which required an early (and immeasurably chilly) start in Kent, it was back to North Surrey for a ‘warming’ up, followed by a fine evening takeaway from this establishment.All of my frozen extremities had returned to ‘room temperature’ and were ‘alert and able’, once again (not in ‘that’ way), so I opted for Rock Salmon and chips.Chips are done superbly here!Rock Salmon was excellent.The owners are terrific, and friendly.Service was both rapid and decent.Very pleasant takeaway.

Superb takeaway, yet again, from this very very fine fish and chip shop! Excellent friendly service, from the family who have been running this place for many years, now. Scampi - excellent, as always. Fish cake - ditto, as per the above. Mushy pea fritter - very nice indeed, and perfect prior to viewing Lore, Bronson and The Woodsman. Excellent top rate grub 👍

We have been coming to this fish bar for many years & I can honestly say it is by far the best fish & chips I’ve ever had & in the 10 years or so we have been going there the standards have never dropped it is a proper friendly family run business & I would recommend to anyone

The food is very good quality. Its cash only which, in the current Covid-19 climate, seems a bit silly of them as I saw customers queuing up only to be told this and then having to find an ATM. Polite staff though but they need to adapt to cashless.

After personal sheer jubilation, on hearing I would certainly win ‘Work Joker of the Year’, for the fifth successive year, it was time to reward myself with a fantastic takeaway, from this fine venue. This place is always consistently excellent - fantastic chips - scampi and Rock Salmon excellent. Plenty of parking in Claygate Parade, for customers. Quick and pleasant service. Excellently diverse menu which caters for all tastes.

Bloomin' good fish and chips, what more can I say?

Great owners, really outstanding fish & chips. Enormous, succulent cod, perfectly light batter and chips cooked perfectly - every single time. Haddock the size of a cricket bat and again battered perfectly, with choice fish every time. A local treasure really.

After a lengthy day, what better to compliment a viewing of Bulworth, Matchstick Men, and The Quiet American trio of films.....with some good old fish and chips. Service - warm and friendly as always! Fast as always. Rock Salmon fish - fantastic and succulent. Chips with salt and vinegar - always superbly done. Mushy peas, on the side - very nice.

What do you do when you have yet another, night in solo? Simple! Accept it’s been 10+/- years, and get yourself a top notch takeaway!! This place re-opened, thankfully, last week, after being temporarily closed, for a short period. Many a meal from the menu is consistently very good - from the Rock Salmon to the Veggie Burger, Mushy Pea Fritter, to Spring Rolls. In the end I opted for Scampi, a Fishcake and chips with salt and vinegar. All aspects were excellent, and a good precursor to viewing ‘Enchanted’ and ‘Muppets Most Wanted’, for some light respite. Service, as always, impeccably affable and speedy.

Working away from home and fancied F&C’s. Ordered the Haddock so had to wait. Disappointed with quality of meal. I don’t expect to have to spit fish bones out. Nothing to shout about. If you want to taste the best ever visit Georges Fish Bar, Dudley Fields in the West Midlands....live and learn.

On weekends there is a bit of a wait because its busy buts it's worth it! The savaloys are lovely and crunchy not soft and soggy like most places. Best fish and chips for miles also!!

Food cooked to order, but no priority system, telephone orders and customers coming in long after you that are known by name to the staff, get served well ahead of you. When I finally got my order it was cold and the fish was not fresh. Having tried this shop now several times, the service and food has not improved and doesn't even warrant one star.

Required a takeaway after work, to accompany, another reclusive night in, which had become a very frequent phenomenon over the last 3-4 months. Food is always very good here, and service is both friendly and fast. Interior is always kept spotlessly clean. Opted for scampi,fish cake and small chips, with salt and vinegar. As per usual, all the food was delicious, and very enjoyable.

If you catch them right then what you get is absolutely excellent, but you can get less than acceptable chips occasionally, or get there and too many times find they are closed - which they appear to do for several holidays a year. That can be very frustrating as it is a long way to another decent outlet. It would help if they posted their holiday closed times on google so when you asked google assistant to drive there she could tell you they were closed.

This place has always maintained a high standard of quality fish and chips.As I was staying in for the evening to watch ‘The Terminal’ and ‘Tootsie’, - two classics - I decided to order Scampi and chips.The Scampi, as ever was excellent / the chips are always excellent, particularly with salt and vinegar. Mushy pea fritter was also delicious.

All my stars are for the good food and two deducted for the soooo soooo slow service. Everything is cooked on order which is overkill on a Friday night....have some chips and fish prepared....they will sell and the quality won't be compromised. Ringing in advance never seems to speed things up as turning up to collect just appears to be confirmation to start cooking your order rather than it bring ready.

Superb takeaway, as always, to accompany a pleasurable later, rather than late, night-in. Scampi is always very good. Pickled egg, and mushy peas were equally great. Perfect for a night in with superb German film ‘The Lives of Others.’ Classic and accurate film-making.

Everything cooked fresh, fish always good and chips just right. Can be a bit of a queue at busy times, waiting up to 15-20 minutes for your order, although you can phone ahead. Cash only.

The chips here, are indeed, the best I’ve had myself....albeit it’s all subjective. The Rock Salmon and Scampi - superb! Great takeaway, great service. Fantastic to have a reasonably early night in with this food accompanying magnificent films like ‘Vice’ and ‘The Favourite.’ Bliss !

Superb Rock Salmon takeaway, one late evening, a few weeks back. The chips, were, as always, superb. Certainly the best fish and chips in the immediate area.

Lovely local shop, with all food made to order. Might be a bit of a wait sometimes, but that just further emphasizes the fact that they make each order on demand, and not out of a warmer. Reasonable price too, makes for a lovely, local family meal!

Service can be a bit slow but the food is worth the wait

The chips here are perfect and crisp, the nicest around. The fish is lovey too and you get a lovely big piece. The only negative for me is the curry sauce, it doesn't taste very nice.

I had Rock and chips, it was so nice, not at all greasy the other people in my party all had cod and that looked just as nice.

First time in years we decided to give it a try. Most of the customers were going for a take-away meal. We sat and in a reasonable time we were served. We found the food was reasonable but nothing spectacular . We came out smelling of fish and chips as the atmosphere was smoky/steamy. Not sure we would go again.

Always a friendly welcome at this venue. The Veggie Burger, which I hadn't had for over a year, was fantastic, and the fish cake and chips were brilliant.

Walked in as the owner ,with freshly cooked chips in her hands saying to the young girl "these..are good chips ...ok" i ordered chips and battered sausage for £2.80 .She was right the chips were good but the Batterered sausage was uncooked ,pretty much from past the batter.My first and last time there ,was too far away to return it by then and yes its just a sausage but was looking forward to it :(.

Consistently excellent Rock Salmon, and the chips are always fantastic. Quarter Roast Chicken, and Steak and Kidney pie, ordered for parents, were apparently enjoyable, along with a very large smoked sausage - which their pooch wolfed down, with much gusto. Very good.

It's nothing spectacular - the two times I've eaten there the fish was dry, chips were tasteless, and the staff don't like comments and seem very miserable. I won't be going back there!
