Arrived at hotel and went to bar to watch football and some pre dinner drinks. After buying drinks a sign was put up to say they were now closed. 6pm. We asked when they were closing the following evening and got told we don’t know the management decide on the day-it was 8pm yesterday, 6pm today and tomorrow is 5pm we think! At least prewarned we could go to a local bar which was open and a glass of wine cost less than £8.75.

Staying at the hotel, we met up with our friends at the Claret Jug, for lunch. They'd just had a sandwich, which they said wasn't good, ie the bread wasn't fresh, and they'd waited ages to be served. We opted for a toastie (2 cheese something or other). It was dreadful, with the underwhelming taste of fried bread. I ordered a lime & soda, but was served lime and lemonade, which was flat. Too tired to complain, so left it. Weirdly, it tasted of Turkish Delight - rose lemonade perhaps? Wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Avoid avoid avoid. PS A single shot of lime added £1.50 to the already pricey 'soda/lemonade'.

We're staying in the lodges and popped down to the hotel restaurant for lunch, it was closed and we were redirected to the sports bar. Despite the bar being relatively empty, service was remarkably slow and chaotic - borderline incompetent. It took 40mins for a dry burger (devoid of any flavour) to be delivered to our table, the side salad was an absolute joke. We won't be returning!

Stayed at Belton Woods for 5 nights for work. After dining in the hotel’s other restaurant the previous nights and had a great experience, but fancied a steak on my last night as a treat so went to the Claret Jug. Service was OK, a little slow to be served even though it was only me waiting. I would have accepted a friendly “wont be a moment” but not a word was said. The beer was served in a warm glass. Ordered a medium rare steak which arrived well done. Waited a few minutes for a service check which didn’t happen so I returned the meal to the bar counter. The replacement arrived which was still overdone (medium to well done this time), with the same chips and onion rings that had been redipped in the fryer and ruined before being left to go like warm and served with the same whole tomato and mushroom which were now both stone cold. Not having the time to wait and being hungry, I ate the meal but being charged £20.50 for a 6oz Rump Steak seemed expensive, but would be worthwhile if cooked and served properly. Don’t eat in the Claret Jug. Staff don’t appear to care front of house and kitchen seem incompetent and incapable. Bumped into a colleague in the hotel foyer who won’t eat in the Claret Jug during his stay.

I visited recently with my partner in order to get dinner, and we were not disappointed. Although not necessarily table service, the staff were friendly and chatted with us, which made the whole experience feel very personal. The menu has a good range of options for all, and isn't overly expensive. The food arrived quite promptly, and the portion sizes were very respectable, so much so that I couldn't finish my meal. The atmosphere was light and breezy, the music and television not too intrusive, and all in all it was a lovely way to spend an evening. I have visited the Claret Jug before, and I certainly will again.

Visited here with friends as it was a convenient meet up point from the A1 for a late lunch. We arrived at 1.30pm to a shabby, untidy and less than welcoming environment. The tables had not been cleared, dirty coffee cups, half eaten pizza, etc on all the unoccupied tables. We cleared a table so we had some where to sit. The table was never wiped down and the dirty cups that we had moved remained on another table for the duration of our stay (2 hours). We were told there would be a 40 minute wait for food. When the food came, the sandwiches were basic with dry curled corners, nachos stale at a cost of £7, no other trimmings. The steak sandwich was tough. the Poke Bowl salad was a mere three small spoons of quinoa with a few cubes of pineapple and a few leaves, no dressing and no where near big enough, I have a small appetite but this was disgraceful, £10. The sauces that were brought to the table were empty, we tried 4 bottles of mayonnaise before a bowl of it was brought out from the kitchen. Terrible lunch and very disappointing for a four star hotel? . We certainly will not be returning.

Four of us visited for mid-week lunch, with a celebration in mind. We looked at the menu online to make sure all party would be accommodated for. Nowhere in the website does it state this is a sample menu - we arrive & it is completely different. Thankfully there was still something everyone liked. We found a table & the waitress brought water to us at the table. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Our order was placed at the bar - 3 sandwiches, with chips on the side, then fish & chips. The food came and was good - we all enjoyed the food & it was done well. No complaints for the simple food itself. But sometimes that's just what you need. The downside is for the above, without food it was just over £50!! Now for that in a bar with sports on the telly and sticky sofas it is severely overpriced! It did the job on the day but I would avoid going back!

We found the experience surreal as we were fully dressed and there were large women sat on the next table in ill fitting dressing gowns which was rather off putting. I met a group of friends at the Claret Jug bar/restaurant inside the hotel. Firstly the hotel is actually really nice, its open, plenty of parking, easy to get to and the hotel is suitably grand inside the spa facilities and pool are well spread out and the bar/restaurant was easy to find. The Claret Jug was packed, I was really pleased we booked in advance, medium sized eatery but essentially it’s a bar with TV's and unfortunately there was a football match which was being displayed, queue hordes of men gathered in the bar making it difficult to maneuverer your way through. We booked a table for 6 which was positioned in the back of the bar, in a kind of conservatory, really bright with great views but also felt a bit like they were channelling their aircon from the Arctic Tundra. In addition the mix of tiles and glass meant it was also incredibly loud inside, not ideal if you’re having a catch up with friends because it’s really hard to hear anything.Waiting staff were attentive and quick which is always a bonus, food came after 20 mins wait, also pretty good considering how busy they were. The food was exactly as described, nothing special or unexpected with regards to ingredients or presentation. With a burger costing £13, which is the upper end of what I’d pay for a burger I was hoping for a bit more or something stand out. That said, I did order a side of celeriac and beetroot slaw which was really tasty (I'm a fan of homemade seasonal slaw)!

The food and the hospitality were great, the steak was to die for and I would have given it 5 stars, however having been shopping at Tesco and found out the bottle of wine we had was on sale at £8.50, to have been charged £38.00! was just too much over the top. It’s a shame as it has soured the experience.
