Thank you so much to all the team for the warm welcome, gorgeous food, and for the extra special touches made for my daughter at the final family get-together at the end of her 'hen' weekend. A perfect ending before she returns to Italy.

Family trip out to grab a Sunday lunch. Good offer on for 3 courses Staff were friendly and helpful, and made our toddler happy in her high chair. Had the full 3 courses, starters of the mushroom and ciabatta were tasty. Staff accommodated our daughter by bringing her childs roast dinner, with our starter- she takes ages to eat. We all had roasts a mix of beef and pork. Came with a tray of trimmings which was a healthy size with 2 big jugs of gravy. We couldnt eat it all, so they provided a doggybag for chomping later. Sorry didnt get a chance to take a pic of the mains as our daughter nicked the phone to watch kids shows grrr Desserts we had cheesecake and a Clementine tart. Both were nice, but the tart was delicious. As an ale drinker I would have preferred better options as their focus leans towards common commercial lagers. The venue is great too, with nice window views. Overall a lovely visit and a big thumbs up. Thanks!

I.E lift's out of order with no sigh's to inform the public..just ask the staff for a key..only to be met with rudeness. Not to mention the over priced menu. Won't be going back there anytime soon.

We had a one night stay at the hotel & two rounds of golf.On arrival we met in the Claret Jug and order an expensive drink. There was hand cleaner & social distance queuing for the bar but the golfers ignored it once they gathered at their tables. We also ordered toasties with fries which took nearly 40 minutes to arrive. The fries & toasties were barely warm & as we hadn’t a lot of time before our tee-off time, we decided to eat the food. Two small bottles of water in the pro shop cost me £4, which is disgusting.

The Claret Jug is basically the Golf Club of Oulton Hall.Purchased four rounds of drinks on different occasions and on each occasion I was charged a different price! The outside appearance is shabby and the outside tables need washing down as some off them are drink stained and have green moss growing out of them. Also today Saturday bank holiday we noticed there was a dead bird that had been by the dowpipe drain clearly more than a few days. This was more more than two metres from the door.Continuing on the outside there's so much turf and old grass on the floor this really is the 19 hole.Menu is pricy and limited.Inside was clean though and benifits from sky sports.

This is a lovely place attached to the hotel, staying at the hotel, the first night we just wanted a decent pub meal. This has a great pub menu, very friendly staff who couldn't do enough to help. Excellent hand pull beers from the Osset brewery, food tasty and well prepared, we both had the Caesar salad. Just no atmosphere in the place, overall a really a really clinical feel which just let's it down. Possibly because it was a Thursday night, I'd try this again to see.

Not for the first time, we found ourselves at Oulton Hall with friends for a nice evening away to mark a special anniversary. My wife being a regular at the Hall handled the booking, and room and staff were absolutely top notch. This is specifically for the Claret Jug 'bistro'. Initial impressions continue downward once the member of staff eventually rise from beyond the grave and slumbered across. 'Name?' is grunted. Think Marty Feldman's Igor from Young Frankenstein, but without the charm, humour or suitability of attire. This was the highlight of the evening. What followed was terrible service and attention to detail. Both members of staff were evidently far too busy with other more pressing matters that prevented them from taking or drink order. Or food order. Or even delivering the food once it did eventually get prepared (a very charming member of the kitchen staff was even required to come out and deliver a dish). This timing ensured that we did not receive our courses close enough to allow all four to eat them warm. The food itself was average. Very average, reasonable pub average but at decent place prices. Now I'm happy to enjoy a 'spoons for a curry deal or somesuch, and I can honestly say the staff in your typical 'spoons will be quicker, politer, more efficient and visibly cleaner and better attired (read into this what you will, but swill stained wooly cardigans?).At one stage we were able to flag down one of the staff and plead for more imbibement, which begrudgingly was provided. But only the once mind, and at the cost of clearing away the starter porcelain and cutlery. Oh, speaking of cutlery don't expect a full replacement set after your starter. Or after the first / second time of asking, but the third will see you right. Finally, after convincing them to produce a bill which would allow our escape back to the hall, I was asked how everything was.'It was..... Okay is all I can say' [not wanting to unnecessarily give grief]. 'Oh' Igor replied. I wish I had have given him both barrels now.An added bonus was finding the additional service charge that had been added to our hotel bill after I'd crossed the tip section clean through. I appreciate some automatically include this, but for four?! Thankfully my wife realised, interjected and it was removed without my knowledge.Don't go. Previous visits have been very acceptable, this time I had to apologise to my friends. Zero sense of occasion, very shoddy service, average food, long waits, no drink service and the cheek to add a tip.For the record there were but four tables in, the biggest being a brash group of 8(?) the others being couples or so.

Wow, what a dive this place has become! In drastic need of an update (it hasn't been redecorated since it was opened), the smell of stale beer hits you as you walk through the door, the wallpaper is coming off the walls, tables scratched, furniture worn out after years of drunk golfers piling on it every weekend. The manager looked petrified when we asked him for a menu then displayed genuine relief when we said we weren't interested. It saddens me to see it in such a state. Not sure which big chain is managing the place nowadays but God help any of the staff there.

I've rated this review a 1. It may be little harsh but I've done so simply because a majority of my experience of this venue was negatively driven by the service from staff that could of and should of been rectified straight away. We had 58 guests attend an event. Just some of the things that went on:At tea break, they ran out of tea? We asked for more but was told they would sort in a minute as the member of staff was doing another job sorting water. When we highlighted the break was 10mins only and queues at the tea station were immediate, we were informed that they would need to run across to Hotel to collect some more tea. Hence people went without tea as when it came back the presentations had resumed. We asked for Air-con to be altered, 15 mins later when asked if sorted were told they hadn't had time and she will sort it when she can? Womens toilet were blocked, something I also noted in passed reviews (surely this should get sorted) low on toilet paper (should of been sorted) Someone lost their phone, asked for help to find, know one helped and I found later after looking under seat cushions. When I informed I'd found, I was told Yeah, lots of people lose things out of their pockets on these chairs?!? Most of the time there was no one around to support the day's event and when clearing up no one around to communicate with, had to leave and head to hotel to confirm venue departed and items needing to be shipped etc. Just lack of support and customer care was dreadful. Stayed at hotel and all ok on this aspect. One the plus side food was good. Also could hear discussions and music coming from kitchen, discussions about work load and getting someone else to do it. Poor. Vague about how lights worked. Could of young staff sat on side chatting in coats. Staff member in evening at 12.05 whe we went through to bar told me to start getting everyone out as we only have building until midnight. Was not previously informed of this. Trying to confirm gluten, vegan, veggie menu a chore, asked for soy milk when needed and delivered after needed, asked for this to be prepped for when next needed, same problem.

The restaurant wasn't very busy and there were others who were served before me, even when I had ordered much before... The chef's had clearly forgotten my order. However I had to ask twice to get an update and also after making a point of how ridiculously slow it was, they offered me a free half pint for the delay, didn't get the impression the restaurant manager was that bothered. Food wasn't bad, I had the beetroot burger... But the wait definitely took the gloss off the evening.

The bar was very busy which was to be expected as Rothwell held their bonfire that night and this brings lots of visitors to the area. People were waiting over 15 mins to be served and any drinks that were from the fridges behind the bar were warm as they were not working.I would like to think that a 4 star hotel would have better service and be more organised than this.I hope to see improvements on my next visit.

It was a Monday night and it was quiet but the one thing I didn't like was that there was golf on the tv right next to us (it is a gold course I must admit)

Stayed at Oulton hall this week and because we didn't want to go out we ate in the Claret Jug twice. A big mistake. Each time we waited over 40 minutes for our food and the restaurant had not many customers/diners. A group of three on a nearby table had waited 45 minutes and complained to the head waitress but her excuse was there was a party upstairs. This should have nothing to do with the restaurant, and we all never saw any party upstairs. The food when arrived was not very well presented and also quite cold and not worth the wait or money. Staff were not interested in the customers and not bothered that everyone had to wait so long. Would NOT recommend the Claret Jug to anyone. Oulton Hall need to sort out the staff and serve better food here.

Came here for a wedding reception in early summer. Drinks aren't the cheapest, but still a great venue.

Had a meal here and detailed some of the problems on my review of the main hotel. The staff seem to need more training, weren't sure how to change a barrel or charge the drinks to my room. The service in the restaurant was slow and the food adequate only.

We were 3 family groups booked in at 15 min slots and the staff were very helpful in arranging tables, dealing with several dietary requirements. They were good humoured but seemed under a lot of pressure. The food was basically pub food at very high prices, not value for money

One staff member at the bar and lots of people waiting. You would think at £5 a pint you could employ more staff. Exactly the same happened last year when we visited. Very disappointing

We went in search of a quiet corner while staying in Oulton Hall where peace is a rare thing. We didn't find peace at the Claret Jug either. Unfortunately a large party of golfers took noise levels up to jet engine levels; our longed-for intimate evening was sadly drowned out. This is a potential risk for anyone visiting in the evening. The menu is 'club-house', with a good range of uncomplicated meals; we found the food well-cooked and really delicious (the Q burger and veggie burger even had real fresh salad!) and the wines good quality. Service suffered a bit from the sudden appearance of 20 diners baying for food.

Visited at the weekend with my partner. We sat on the terrace over looking the golf course which was lovely. Service was quick and friendly. The fish and chips were lovely, just a tad oily but good portion size. The steak sandwich was nice but the bread was a bit dry and the steak was over cooked....more bread than meat which I always annoyingly find with this dish. Was a good portion size also and the prices were reasonable ish.....around £12 per item. All together with drinks the bill was around £35I'd return but maybe not get the steak sandwich

My wife and I visited the restaurant using the yum yum pizza deal: two stoned baked pizzas with two glasses of wine with a shared salad. The meal was very good value. Both pizzas were tasty. My wife's white wine was not as chilled as she would have liked. My red wine was very nice.

Visited The Claret Jug on a pretty quiet Monday afternoon for lunch, using the Yum Yum pizza deal we had seen online.Very good value - 2x pizza's, 2x glasses of wine and a salad for £20.All in all - very nice food and wine. Good service and very accommodating for us with a very fussy 8 month old! This was an early wedding anniversary outing for us as we got married at Oulton Hall 5 years ago and had our wedding reception in the room above the restaurant so it's always nice to go back there!

We had a very pleasant evening at the Claret Jug. The service might have been a tad slow and there was a slight hic cup in the fact that one of the main meals was missed off the order but this was quickly remedied and a coffee plus apologies were given whilst they speedily brought the missing dish.Management need to check out the menu shown on their own site because no starters are appearing and it stated that desserts were available until 18.00pm. We clarified before booking and yes of course there are starters and also desserts( for the sweet tooth person out there we can certainly recommend the cheesecake as it was one of the best we have ever had) All food was cooked well, nicely presented and plenty of it. There were 4 of us and we found that the antipasta starter was sufficient for us all otherwise we would not have been able to do justice to the main course and of course the pudd !Claret Jug accept Taste Card which brings down the cost of food here substantially.Management do though need to have a look at their air conditioning system. It was a red hot evening and the dining room was lovely and cool but water was collecting on the ceiling at various points. It was therefore dripping onto diners seated in certain areas.

Reccomend the tapas style platter but maybe between four as we were a tad full for our mains after eating it all between two of us! Very tasty indeed :) Will deffinatley return if in the area again. We were here last year and the service was shocking, however as we returned to the same hotel we thought we'd give it another go. We booked early as we have a 13 month old baby. Tonight the service, food, staff friendliness, drinks value and ambience was all excellent. The staff were more than accommodating for our daughter, who'd had a long day and was starting to become a horror. This restaurant is smart but relaxed at the same time which is perfect if you have children. The only downside to this location is that there is no baby changing facilities, but there are plenty of other options such as cushioned benches in the ladies. On top of the great food, there is obviously a great view of the golf course where the sun sets in the evening. What else would you want?

Stayed at the Oulton Hall a few times and always enjoyed it, the Claret Jug is the Golf a course eatery, there being a main dining room in the hotel. It was very quiet when I arrived and a table for one was no problem. Staff might be short at the moment, I seemed to get a couple of training guys.Menu is not that great, I expected more healthy options but mostly the usual clubhouse fayre, nothing special. They do a naked burger which I opted for, unfortunately it's cooked the way the chef decrees which is well done. If given the option, it could have been excellent medium rare!Decent enough portion, and ok value.Plus points? Window table overlooking the 18th, good decor, clean. Friendly staff, no doubt about that.Verdict? Could and should be so much better.

I have just returned from a society golf trip to Oulten Hall. The hotel itself was lovely with great staff but the club house "The Claret Jug" has a long way to go to match it. The customer relations are diabolical and service is slower than I have ever experienced. One guy working on the bar there, I believe his name is Richard, should immediately seek a career which involves sitting in a darkened room and never integrating with a member of the public, or human race for that matter. His whole attitude stunk. Bad tempered, bad mannered and downright rude. They kept running out of all the draught lagers, but I witnessed on two occasions that they hadn't run out they just couldn't be bothered going to the cellar to change them. Each visit to the bar was an ordeal. On the Friday I went up to the bar and asked if they were serving food and was abruptly shouted at with "I'm serving someone can you just give me a minute", which I replied to with "it was just a question, I wasn't requiring service, just a simple yes or no answer". There was 39 of us on this golf trip, with the package that we paid for and the money we spent on food and drink, we spent well over £10,000 so you would think a little politeness would have come as standard. The food was certainly not up to the standard you would expect from such a grand establishment. Overcooked tiny portions that left most of our group googling for local pizza takeaways moments after finishing their three courses. As a restaurant owner myself, I would suggest to the management that you deal with the customer service issues immediately with staff training sessions. Even when it was quiet, it was slower than you could ever imagine possible. And if you are planning to continue serving mediocre food then your prices should be reviewed to reflect that, the lamb burger I ordered on Sunday afternoon was inedible. And a pie is very different to a bowl of beef stew with a little puff pastry rectangle sat on top. Such a shame as the decor is lovely, the hotel and the course fantastic, and the hotel staff and golf rangers are brilliant. Perhaps the Claret Jug staff should spend some time with them and see how it should be done.....

We booked our break at the Oulton Hall complex and we could not fault our stay. We eat and relaxed in the Claret Jug, the food was good and the service was excellent, in fact unusually ALL the staff were great. There were a few members of the team that excelled - Lauren, Dom and Richard, our thanks to all.
